as a fetish it's defintely hot, especially when you put a gyaru in it.

As for the reason why it's used so often, it seems to be the most exciting part of a japanese life for many. With all the hormones and stuff :D

i think its cancer ...its for casual sweaty smelly juvenile misguided trash weebs with scuffed standards who know nothing about anime and they are a far cry from actual real refined cultured anime enthusiasts, they are a blight upon the medium its nauseating pathetic & cringeworthy , i purposely avoid that type of anime like the plague.

Well anime is generally aimed at a younger audience. So I don't see a problem most of the time. There are times when it can be a bit creepy, but overall I think it's just Japan's obsession with their glorious high school days and some sort of nostalgic feeling that drives these types of anime.

Hmm... ..my guy, there's no need to be this way, is there? No one is out to get you. You like your anime, let others like their anime. No issues with that. Just leave it like it is. Of course, you could just be joshing. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding.

It is the story of the magnificent banquet: six hundred different plates offer themselves to your appetite; are you going to eat them all? No, surely not, but this prodigious variety enlarges the bounds of your choice and, delighted by this increase in possibilities, it surely never occurs to you scold the Amphitryon who regales you. Do likewise here: choose and let lie the rest without disclaiming against that rest simply because it does not have the power to please you. Consider that it will enchant someone else, and be a philosopher. - Marquis de Sade; The 120 Days of Sodom

The West's most popular shows are also based on kids/teens in middle/high school as well, like Stranger things and Wednesday. So it's not just a Japanese thing. The entire world must be pedos, and in some countries/areas they marry 12 y/o. The entire world is sick.

I find it ironic how you complain about "casual weebs" while having a Naruto profile pic. Naruto is one of the most popular anime among the "casuals".

Same.
High school was the best part of my education. I couldn't ask for better classmates and teachers. Japanese school system is a bit different than school system in my country but I can still relate to many situations.

I don't think anything of it. It's kind of hard to tell the similarities between a drawing of a high school girl and an actual one. There are some times when I think the characters look too old to be in high school. But I can't really say that I'm a good age-detector when it comes to looking at people in real life. And sometimes there are people who look younger than they actually are. I mean, some people think my mother looks a lot younger than her actual age.

I think it's just the concept of "seishun". Adulthood in Japan sucks and anime, often being designed for escapism, brings people back to the time when they had less to worry about, ie. high school, and naturally high school girls are a part of that experience.

Think it's reflective of many in the audience thinking the most fondly of their high school days. I don't necessarily mind it, as I've gotten used to this being the norm in many titles. Just depends on genre and premise for the title in question.

There aren't enough high school girls in anime. Solution: Japan should consider extending high school age to the 30s or 40s.

There's no obsession with high school girls, there's an obsession with girls, but the high school part is simply a common/relatable setting.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

As a setting, I do get tired of the whole high school thing. My main gripe with the Persona series is that it always starts in a high school setting. As far as the age of these characters goes, I don't really care either way. They're fictional characters...They could literally slap any age onto them. I care more about how annoying a character is than their age..

This might come to a surprise but it goes beyond just Anime. Japanese culture in general is obsessed with High School and in particular High School girls. From their live action TV and movies to their adult video industry. If you are suddenly creeped out about this by having some epiphany that this is extremely prominent to their culture, You can blame things dating back to the early 70s with films like "Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion" to modern day stuff like "yo yo girl cop". For decades even before most MAL users were even born, School girls in Japan have been a Symbol Youth and Innocence to Power and Brutality throughout history in their media and cinema.

The older I get, it becomes harder for me to relate to the high school themes, and the less it makes me want to try new manga or anime. And unlike some of the people in this thread, I'm not a creepy 30-something who finds high schoolers attractive, even if fictional. There are exceptions to this for me, but it was really difficult for me to watch Bocchi the Rock or Urusei Yatsura's 2022 adaptation and get invested in either for example.

Better than it being obsessed with grannies, I know that much. JKs and JCs have an age range where they still have a lot of experience and development to undergo, which makes writing them easier. It's possibly the most turbulent period in life in general, which makes it very eventful by extension.

It is what it is, and as @ColourWheel points out, it's an obsession that goes far beyond anime. I believe Japanese women report that their rate of molestation/assault on public transportation goes down once they graduate high school and stop wearing school uniforms. If more anime featured older female characters in ecchi situations, I certainly wouldn't be opposed to watching it. But for now, I'll watch what's offered to me, and as long as you're not going around harassing / hitting on high school girls in real life, there's no harm, no foul.

Hey now, that's an unfair characterization of the MAL community.

I understand how many shows are set in highschool because of the demographic, but people claiming waifus who are like 14... meeh.
Let's forget for one second how old they are, if they say "it's just a drawing", but how interesting are most 14 yo teens. Ofc there are some interesting ones, mainly those that lived through a lot, but most aren't.
