Maybe not. There have been lots of predictions already and none of them came true [fully].

The End-of-the-World business/scam separating gullible suckers from their cash has been going strong since the beginning of the world. I personally admire these people and hope one day to run my own end-is-nigh scheme. I'm still trying to figure out an angle -- since Mayan calendar has been used, I'm thinking about maybe a Vatican conspiracy, since those Dan Brown nuts seem to eat that stuff up.
Please tell me how you plan to make money off of a conspiracy like this? Do you expect people to spend all of their money on you at the last moment?

No, of course not. Last-minute sales are meaningless. True millenarianism scams always have a long, exquisite build-up. This 2012 thing has been able to sell books, movies, click-thru ads, etc., for several years now and probably still hasn't reached its peak yet. Good planning. In the lead-up to the year 2000, businesses selling survival equipment, canned foods, portable generators, shotguns, etc., enjoyed brisk sales right up until December 31, but the end of the world needed to be hyped for several years before that in order to get sales up. I knew a couple of suckers who were still finishing off their stocks of canned tuna well into 2004.

To that end, a Vatican conspiracy needs to have a end-of-world date several years off, to allow people to forget 2012. I'm guessing around 2023 sounds good. That will give me time to hire several third-world urchins to see a prearranged Lourdes-style "miracle" and set up my narrative and allow the frenzy to build. Perhaps I'll be lucky enough to have a Papal conclave thrown into the mix so some stunt can be pulled there as well. Money in the bank.

Oh, I see. and what is the basis of this?

Really, any blather about the end of the world is nothing but a waste of time and oxygen, or in this case, bandwidth.

I don't believe the world will end in 2012, however I do think it makes people realize that if we're going to continue with the emissions as we do now it might go wrong at some point in the future. I feel there might happen something big. If it truly does ends, well then we ''humans'' fucked it up ourselves. Time will tell. If there are coming nature catastrophes , I will be on the beach awaiting my dead by a huge tsunami. (with my family of course, dying alone would be silly) I rather die that way than by an earthquake or whatsoever.

Lol, dude, no. The Mayans were smart as hell but when they had to fight against the Spanish invaders who brought GUNS and metal plated armor and horses with spears and bows and arrows? Yeah, you do the math.

Other than that 2012 is all bullshit.

Nah I'm pretty sure they all did that. What you've gotta realize is that the Mayans were very spiritual and knowledgeable about astronomy. You heard of bad omens? To them the response was usually to sacrifice a criminal or something to appease the gods. Just cut off his head on a stone table. They'd also sacrifice animals for good rains for their crops or good hunting. Not sure about the sun rising or not though, woulda just done that either way.

My brothers are convinced and at least one of my mother's coworkers is convinced. Said coworker bought a motorcycle because of it, apparently. Living dangerously since we're all screwed anyway? Meh.

I, for one, am not convinced. It is a unique idea and interesting with all the theories, but that's all they are, theories. We're all eventually screwed and will pass away, but 2012 is just... doubtful. -_-;

I don't see why people are so concerned about 2012 ( who knows ? maybe the mayan people decided to continue the calendar later :D ) , every human will die sooner or later . Why not enjoy life now instead of worrying about when we will die ?

I believe God will end the world -- "The Day of Judgement". In my religion, we do not know when God will end the world, but there are certain signs and hints of it. So, December 2012 IS a possibility to me but a VERY unlikely one.

Yeah, I would be too; I would die before my 19th birthday too, which is on 31st December. At least we would have lived to our 18th.

NO!!!

December 21, 2012 will come and go, and then we'll have the NEXT idiots claiming the world will end on 2020 or 2050 or whatever.

This is no different than Y2K, people said they had "proof" and that there was a "good chance" something might happen, guess what, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENED.

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.
Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?
A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.
