Hi, I have a genuine question why do you or other people rewatch anime? Perhaps i'm just coming from a place of confusion because I personally don't see a point in it and if you look at my PTW list there's so many anime that I don't really have time to waste rewatching anime if I want to get through most the anime on my PTW list. So help me understand why you rewatch anime, just want to hear some reasons that you would choose to rewatch the same anime you've already seen over something new that you haven't seen yet

I am not the same person I was 20 years ago when I watched sailor moon and I forget things, rewatching from time to time is good because in the end, it's your favorite anime. I prefer rewatching stuff I like than watch a bad anime

I will rewatch my favourites (and big series which are hard to judge from the first view) when I'm sure I saw everything I needed to see and there's nothing to look for at the moment (that is, when all variants left don't seem to be worth spending my time on them).

Some animes require you to rewatch them because they have a lot of details and can be interpreted in various ways (like Monogatari series and Ergo Proxy).

People also tend to forget things so rewatching your old favorite stuff can still give you that feeling of something new.

And this isn't so time consuming and demanding as, for example, rereading books. I doubt I will reread anything (besides the stuff related to my hobbies, which requires studying in my case) because I'm a very slow reader.

@tchitchouan for some reason the gif isn't shown fully (I never tried to fix that and to understand how everything works), so the focus is on butt, kek.

@mrBored0m Yes the focus in on the butt (which i love), in order for the image to appear fully it has to be formatted to a 150px by 600px resolution.
Mine are 150px by 300px each and they appear fully.

I rewatch because of my love for the show. Sometimes I might just be watching an anime and it reminds me of my favorite character in another anime and I then I feel like rewatching the show because of one character. Sometimes it's just because I want to get that nostalgic feeling like recently I rewatched your name, weathering with you and Fullmetal alchemist. Sometimes those old shows just remind you of how much you love anime and that gives me the push to keep finding more masterpieces to see

Maybe the same reason some people rewatch Avengers movie while they already seen it on the cinema? or maybe just like when you look for a meme video that made you laugh few days ago? For me, whenever I randomly remembered about a scene (or moments, or a specific character I liked) in an anime I've watched, or saw a clip of it on Instagram Reels, and it hits my brain like "oh I remembered this one! I missed that anime!", then I might rewatch that specific episode of the anime, or sometimes rewatch full. And also at other times, when I'm feeling bored irl, I rewatch Gintama or Grand Blue etc just for the jokes. So actually, I think there's no specific or "strong" reason for rewatching an anime. It's just because. And many of my friends also don't rewatch anime at all, so it's also normal.

“why do you rewatch anime?”

i used to say i rewatch anime just because... like i suddenly felt like it. but over time i realized it usually comes back to a few reasons:
1. nostalgia – sometimes i want to relive old memories, so i'll go back to shows that remind me of a certain time in my life.
2. enjoyment – when i really love an anime, it just feels good to experience it all over again.
3. deeper understanding – some series are complex and layered, so a rewatch helps me catch details i missed the first time.
4. fresh perspective – rewatching lets me see a show differently, whether it's because i've grown or just want to experience it with new eyes.
5. mood – i can be pretty moody, and sometimes i don't enjoy an anime just because i wasn't in the right headspace. coming back to it later often changes that.
6. comfort – when nothing new grabs my interest, i naturally return to shows i already know and love.

I rarely rewatch and if I do it is mostly because new season comes out and last season was few lifetimes ago. If there is no recap available and I like that stuff enough I rewatch it just to catch up.

@Morphun Same thing for me. I mean, why should you be supposed to watch every anime only once? Furthermore I would rather rewatch a show I really like than look out for something new if I don't have something to watch.

It's not our fault if you basically add every second show to your PTW-list in the first place. 5k entries is just beyond good and evil, but I guess your whole tracking management is a whole mess or are you really watching 266 different shows and have 358 different shows on hold atm? Let me give you an advice: finish a show instead of starting with a new one midway through

I have watched all of One Piece twice, and plan to rewatch it more times. The reason is simple: I dont see anime as a check list, surely if you love something, you'd wanna see it again. The same way you eat your favourite foods all over again. Plus you spot things that you didnt notice before on your first watch through, its quite a rewarding experience. Dont treat anime like something to be ticked off a list and moved on from, appreciate and cherish those series, make the most out of them.

@Tirinchas

Okay you legitimately got me to laugh. Story time down below but first why I rewatch.
1) I’ve enjoyed it a lot the first time around.
2) I will rewatch something when I share a particular title with someone who hasn’t seen it before.
3) nostalgia
4) I don’t keep up on seasonal anime and generally don’t stream
5) physical media nerd

Okay as promised story time

1) taste changes over time
2) my PTW is almost empty
3) in some cases I need time to realize how good an anime is, and when I do even the first few episodes become better in retrospect (= a rewatch is needed to make sure of that)
4) it gives me satisfaction to increase the score of an anime after a rewatch

Important note: I prefer rewatching many different anime once, rather than the same few anime 10-20 times.

Certain anime are my comfort zone; for example, I first saw A Silent Voice at a specific moment in my life, and it's always stuck with me. Now, whenever I need something to make me feel 'good,' I watch it again.

I personally rewatch anime of ones that I heavily enjoyed. Like I've seen my top 5 anime a dozen times at least because they're fun to watch and enjoyable. However, sometimes it is nice to rewatch a season if a anime took like 4-5 years for another season to come out. Makes it much easier to understand where the story is going in the new season.

It's great to apreciate how the story were written and how they were planned out from the begining even more after having all of the characters backstories and full details about the world of the series, and also it's fun to catch on many hidden details which were actually teasing the future story events.

however, i know that for my gf and people like her, they just prefer to relax and rewatch the shows they know they like and dont have to think to hard about. And it doesnt have to be a hardline personality trait or anything like that, sometimes people just have a hard day and want to relax at the end of it.

Because some anime are just that good that they deserve a rewatch or multiple,if you aren't picky then you'd have plenty to watch, but for those of us that are once you pass 200-250~ you realize what made those particular ones stand out and go back to them, esp if you've watched something that truly put you off.

I was completely the opposite a couple of years ago. Rewatching anything when I still have so many anime in my PTW was inconceivable. Now I've reached the point where rewatching something is completely fine, and I will probably do it more often, since I finally have the time and my PTW is not that big.

Well I don't have as long a PTW list as you do, which is impressive. Man I felt guilty having almost 1k on my PTW lol. Still in the end, I just added anything I thought was interesting to that PTW. How many of those series are actually going to be better than some of my favorites? If you are lucky maybe 1/20 of my list, and it's probably lower than that.

So in the end, I could just rewatch an absolute classic, I love, or just a show I had fun with, even if it had problems, or I could roll the dice again, and usually just get a decent show. And again, that's fine, when I hadn't seen as much, I felt I needed to expand my knowledge and reach, and it allowed me to find tons of new favourites; however, that has declined over time. I still do largely prioritize newer shows, however, I have been enjoying more rewatches of late, and I am going to start tracking them for once, too, since I plan to do more.

Entertainment is comfort, and honestly, picking up a series you know will be good, can be more comforting than jumping off into the deep unknown, and watch a series that isn't grabbing you as effectively as a favorite.

@BilboBaggins365 I think PTW list it actually doesn't matter, because my point is that in the world of anime there's at least more than 1000-5000 good anime to watch and whether you have them on your list that doesn't matter. I'd just encourage other people to try find better anime they haven't seen yet instead of rewatching stuff because that time you're spending rewatching anime takes away from the time you could be enjoying masterpieces you haven't seen.

Overall here's the single reason I understand rewatching anime, you may be watching a good anime or a mid anime idk what you're watching but to choose to watch a good/mid anime over a masterpiece that doesn't process in my brain as a logical thing to do. Even if it's your favourite anime I still don't understand that mentality because you may think an anime is your favourite but you won't know for sure that new anime can replace that because you're not watching other anime. When I started watching anime naruto and dragonball were my favourite, well thank god I started watching different anime because my favourites change almost 5 times per year based on new anime I always find. Shouldn't rewatch an anime just because you like it or because it's your favourite, I guarantee you'll find new favourite anime that are a million times better than what you're already watching

Well that is your opinion, and again I think the reason you don't understand people who re-watch is you have a more overtly positive view of the mass of entertainment in this medium, more so than the average well watched fan.

Honestly, even though I still find good shows, the amount of absolute amazing works, I have found has gone down, over time. A lot of solid works, however, nothing mind blowing, and I think that will increase as I see more well known titles. Of course, yeah you can find nicher works that have gone under the radar, however, that doesn't happen often.

Like nothing is likely going to be beat out my top 2, I know that, due to browsing through the anime/manga industry's history, and knowing the kinds of stories I like. I like military/political dramas, with a huge scale, how many anime/manga do that concept better than Kingdom or Legend of the Galactic Heroes? I have scanned, I know what is out there, and there is stuff, though not a lot. I will run out of those kinds of works eventually.

Like of course, it's always interesting to check out something new, however, I don't feel I am surrounded by an endless amount of masterpieces, compared to when I was watching a lot of new anime, say in 2018. I was a less experienced fan than now. And again, new works don't have to be masterpieces, however, it does encourage you to take a break, from the average new solid thing, and go back to why you fell in love with the medium, in the first place.

Most new shows you are going to watch aren't going to be masterpieces. So if anything this supports doing rewatches. You get tired of watching 10-15 new 7 or 8 out of 10s, or maybe even hitting a few duds, and you want to go back and watch that 10/10 show you loved or maybe something nostalgic (why I am re-watching Food Wars right now, that and I want to actually finish the last two seasons, that I never got to, regardless of how people feel about them).

Yeah nothing is topping LOTGH for me lol. I have looked through the medium, for equivalent works, and there are only like a few shows, and a few manga, that tackle the same concept, and sure, I will get around to that, however, there is a reason it's praised. Ultimately, I don't actually change my favorites often, LOTR, has still been my favorite story, since I was a kid. LOTGH has been my favourite anime for 7 years, and I don't think that is going to change anytime soon.

Anyway, of course I am still watching new shows, I am still interested in new experiences, however, I don't expect that any new work is going to be the next best thing, and I am fine with that because I can both watch new shows, and rewatch. I can do both in fact, and it's not a "waste of time" cause in the end, I was entertained, which is the point. I don't watch anime to add more entries on my MAL list. Even when I created this list, my goal was to watch a lot more, because I thought I would have a lot of fun. Fun is the goal though. And when I need fun, I can go back to my favourites when I feel a bit tired/jaded with the industry, and when I want something fresh, I can check out something new.

@BilboBaggins365 there's always something better especially LOTGH, by far one of the worst anime i've seen and it's not even just subjective either from an objective point of view there's anime with better characters, better story, better animation and just overall better everything. Keep looking and watching other anime you'll find them

a) I really like it, enough to want to see it again and notice new details
b) It works really well as background noise while making things
c) All of the above
@nanisukoshi I disagree with your point A, I can only personally enjoy an anime that i've seen 1 time. IF I already know what's going to happen next and predict it then it becomes predictable and if i've seen it more than once it's repetitive, those are 2 massive factors that make me hate an anime actually. I can only enjoy anime once only, predicting and repetitive are huge factors for unenjoyment. I'd never rewatch an anime I liked then it would become an anime I hate immediately just based on those factors I mentioned. And i've never watched an anime and missed any details where I had to go back and rewatch it that's just never happened to me
