Shishou always loved Shenmei: he sacrificed everything for her, but she never shed a single tear for him. She had so many opportunities to leave with the only person who had ever truly loved her, and yet he chose to help her, even taking the blame for starting the war. In my history books, that old man was the ultimate nice guy.

Pure cinema. This moment hurts. Suirei lost the only person who loved and protected her: he gave his life for her and the children. A “villain,” sure, but what a way to rewrite what that word can mean.

The soundtrack during Shisui's dance was absolutely beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. Shisui/Loulan is an amazing character. She stood her ground and made Shenmei realize what a fool she had been. I can only hope that final scene is a sign of hope: that she's not really gone. It was an amazing episode.

@FrancoMoe It was a test. If the country failed to stop the Shi clan then it deserved to be destroyed - Loulan's own words.
@antonn Look, that's what she said and all, but in seriousness? She brought Maomao there fully knowing that it would start a chain of events that would bring the military barreling down on that little rebellion. Which, by the way, was quelled pathetically easily, to the point where I'm not even sure what Shenmai and her faction were even thinking.

So... in my opinion, Loulan was just saying that for dramatic effect, rather than actually meaning it. She was playing up her part, as a 'villain', and that was a particularly cold line. From the same girl that 'killed' a bunch of kids to save them later down the line, I just can't see her actually standing by such a statement, nor seriously intending for it to be a test.

If anything, this way of doing things probably ended the conflict with the least casualties possible on the Emperor's side, as well as the elimination of as many 'rats' in the political sphere, all at once. That's how I'd rationalize Loulan's method of approach: wanting to eradicate the Shi clan, for revenge.

Personally, I liked this episode and all... BUT did everything need to be so melodramatic? Like, what was Shishou's actual intentions at firing the feifa, there? Did he seriously expect Jinshi to deflect the bullet, because if not... for a guy trying to take the fall while simultaneously putting an end to his wife's farce, that part was just... weird to me.

Then there is Jinshi. Why go through that secret passage first, and by himself? The hell were his guards doing? If Loulan had wanted it, his brain would have been splattered along the walls like an abstract painting.

And lastly... Loulan. Cool, she got to mess with her mother and get some sweet, sweet revenge... but what was with the dancing? Were we ever even told she particularly enjoyed dancing? She's getting shot at (and hit), and she's just... dancing. I guess while moving like that, it's more likely the feifas miss their mark, so when she falls off the balcony and into the snow, she'll be semi-alright? But like... she couldn't have expected the bullet to hit the hairpin under her garb. It's all just so... convenient, and contrived for me. What should have been a very sad, climactic end felt silly to me. So now she's going to survive (I would assume), and flee with that guy that saw her hairpin in the brush at the end of the episode. Even though the guards that had JUST shot her, could have easily gone to confirm her status, instead of just... not caring? Even if they believed she was dead, wouldn't they want to collect the corpse of the Pure Consort, either for a burial or a public displaying for treason?

Just as how, like... why didn't they capture Shishou/Loulan instead of attacking them while they were unarmed and surrounded? Now there is no trial, no facing the Emperor directly, no public shaming/execution for the coup d'état, nada.

Again, liked the episode, and this whole treason arc in general... it has just felt off to me, at times. Why did Loulan even go through with the whole kidnapping Maomao stunt, instead of just... using her influence and power as the Pure Consort, going straight up to the Emperor and tell him 'Hey, my parents are attempting a coup d'état, they are at XXX location, they have firearms, please put an end to them'? Her sister was already safe, acting as a servant in the rear palace, and through revealing her parents' betrayal, she probably could have bargained towards saving a lot more people (including the innocent kids, without resorting to the revival drug), if that was her goal. Just... strange.

The dancing part/thing has been established since the first season.

It's a farewell for concubines.
@Loaf_dontcare Mmmm, you're probably right. I forgot a lot of the first season by the time S2 started airing, and only watched a summary to catch back up with it, so I really wouldn't know. But from my memory, wasn't it just Ah-Duo that loved dancing, and thus danced as she was leaving the rear palace, just as she used to dance on the wall at night? I thought she was the exception, not the rule.

@Andrewapps But, nobody in the palace knows that *spoiler* as as far as the kingdom and the palace is concerned he is the Moon Prince/Royal Brother, and given his history, even if he finds outs out in future, its doubtful if he would accept the role of crown prince that he is now so happily ditching.
@LordCrueltyV I literally said that in my comment? I was just pointing it out, because if we're going to get all technical about who should actually be ascending the throne, it's Jinshi. Will the truth be revealed? Probably not. Does Jinshi want to be Emperor? 100% nope. Doesn't matter, though. His face was scarred by Loulan because of his physical resemblance to the previous Emperor. That's what matters.

Maomao also danced at the end of season 1 as a farewell to one of the concubines from Verdrigis/the brothel.

((Fengxian (Maomao's own mother) got bought and married by Lakan (Maomao's father))

(Maomao doesn't have the greatest opinion of her biological parents, but she still chose to dance for her mother as a personal way to acknowledge and honor her in a way and say goodbye to her, so that she could potentially find a sense of closure and resolution regarding their complicated relationship.)

It was a way of moving on for her.

Why would they kill the leader of the rebellion on the spot when he threw away his weapon... Shouldn't they capture him? With lots of torture, public shaming and execution? I thought that's how these things go.

Not sure why Shisui had to do that dance, either. It was kind of emotional, but I don't think it held any meaning, and I don't think Shisui's ever shown a love for dancing...

The dance is a farewell for concubines. (it was first shown and explained in the first season)
And Shisui's persona as Loulan is/was a concubine.

That's why she danced. As a farewell for her other persona.

I guess that makes sense...

It still felt a little out of nowhere. Shisui never talked about dancing or hinted at it.

Being a concubine did not feel like a big part of her personality, honestly. She's been a cheerful insect-loving girl and the manicured doomed daughter of the Shi clan. We haven't really seen her be a concubine of the Rear Palace, other than sitting still with heavy makeup.

A tiny callback or a reminder somewhere might've been nice, in my opinion.

One of the best episodes that came out, and Maomao was barely in it. No more fun, and games. Jinshi is now tainted with some harsh truths. This is the anime of the year so far. What an excellent second season. One more episode to go.

Jinshi as the Moon Prince, along with his Royal Guard, finally puts his act against Shishou and the Shi clan with their class act on embellishing in Western machinery like the feifa.

However, that's not the end of the story trying to locate the other remnants, as is Jinshi meeting Loulan by coincidence and forcing him to meet both Suirei and Shisui, to expose the clan's secrets of the once potential Empress Dowager that Shenmei could've had the chance to be one in the rear palace, that within, the Shi clan developed from their slavery business as a secrecy, and also for the Emperor to get interested in women as well through the Empress Regnant.

The ultimate sin for Shishou to decide between the wife he did had, and Suirei that was birthed out from that wedlock, it certainly came to a full circle of what become of the Shi clan through the rear palace's expansion and the embezzlement as well. And Shisui only had her mouth as her area of influence, which only seeded the rot within the clan, and Loulan's way of using the newest model's feifa to express her disgust at her mother who's always treated her and Suirei poorly, and the backfire truly was the one that seeded death incarnate for both parents.

To think that Loulan, like Maomao, would imitate a dance at the penultimate episodes of their seasons, though its intents were clearly different, with the latter seeking her happy death knowing that her time will arrive, what a sad story of fate, even as Maomao is found sleeping within the midst of the dead children of the Shi clan.

The once-in-a-generation-evil dearest Loulan, ABSOLUTE CINEMA OF DEATH.

I swear Shisui better have survived that somehow. I literally do not care what bs excuse they have to come up with to bring her back, but the copium is making me believe that Jinshi's choice of words that he never saw Loulan again, means she went on to live as Shisui. Or at least that's what I sincerely hope for.

At least we know the kids will be waking up next episode. The way Shisui phrased her first wish was clever, since it means that the children who have literally died once already, will he spared.

Dancing as a farewell is a pretty normal thing when the time as a concubine/consort ends for a woman/girl. It's like a tradition no matter if the person normally likes to dance or not.

Maomao also danced as a farewell at the end of the first season when a concubine from Verdrigis/the brothel got brought and married.

(said concubine, being her own mother, Fengxian, and the buyer, her own father Lakan)

I don't think Shisui 1-died (the hairpin) 2-was telling the whole truth about her dad. Her talking about "cleaning the corruption" felt like a big lie to make her husk-of-a-man dad die with honor, humiliate her mom even more and save the people that got exiled from the clan and didn't take part in all of that.

Why would royal guards shoot Loulan dancing instead of capturing her? During dance scene I only cringed instead of being emotionally moved.

I must say that whole scheme reveal was underwhelming. I find reasons for rebellion quite stupid, and a guy going along with it to expose all rot in one place? Completely unbelievable.

Author run out of the ideas for a story and came up with forced, convoluted and implausible plot.

I like Maomao so somehow i still more or less enjoyed a show but story this season is of very low quality.

Such a tragic episode for a penultimate one. Shouldn't this have been the finale instead? I'm so confused. Nevertheless, I can't believe Loulan's gone. I figured she’d either be arrested or exiled, but shot to death? Dang, I was genuinely in shock, mouth literally hanging open.

In any case, I honestly can't imagine what there’s left to show in the finale, but I reckon it'll be one of those “all’s well that ends well” wrap-ups, with Maomao, Zuigetsu, Lakan, Lahan, Basen, Gaoshun, and the rest back at the rear palace, treating the injured and all.

Shishou is gone and died while laughing... Shenmei got destroyed by Loulan with this trapped gun when she tried to kill Loulan and it reverse killed her... worst death, while Loulan got the most beautiful one dancing in the snow after her request with Jinshi. Stunning last scene for her.

Also Maomao woke up right in front of Jinshi... good. Mysterious last scene in the snow with the glittering thing though, I wonder what's the meaning behind that.

Absolute cinema people abosulute cinema!! Without a doubt this season has been better than the first. We still have an episode to go so let's just enjoy this until we can.

Sishui's performance was incredible, she has been one of the best characters in the entire series second obviously after maomao, but like the was she was written has been incredible: Her wo personas, her past, her complex relationship with her half-sister, her relationship with maomao, everything and I really do mean everything has been incredible to watch.

I really hope she somehow survived. I mean she was smart enough to think this complex plan out to be able to save the children, sister and maomao. So its probably not out of the question that she somehow survived. I mean sure she got shot but one looked like it landed on her arm and the other on her chest but she could have easily have had some sort of bulletproof vest underneath to save her, but then you gotta think of the fall. Anyway to make it short I hope she is ok.

Lastly OMG, last week of PEAK detective maomao, before we have to wait for another season to release! I'm sure it will get a third season partly because the anime is very popular in japan and around the world plus, I believe there's still quite a bit for the anime to catch up to the LN so we'll see.

P.S. Since I´ve become a LN junkie now, depending of how this season ends I'll hit up the LNs, moslty because I believe the manga´s (Yes there is 2 versions) are close or on par with the anime now.

All I can say is 10/10. And honestly, would my comment even make a difference? This anime doesn’t need praise—it’s already proven itself to be an incredibly powerful series and one of the best of the year, hands down.

Now, I’m waiting for the final episode… just a few more hours.

Most theatrical/melodramatic episode ever! From Shishou believing he's a main character and getting his own spotlight for his death to Shisui randomly dancing to welcome her impending demise. Both moments looking more ridiculous than moving, if you ask me.

Disappointing arc overall. And to think most of these events could have been avoided had young Shishou told Shenmei she was actually captive and that the former Emperor's reason for not visiting her was because he liked girls who could write their age using only one digit. *sigh*
Also, I would like to mention that for a supposed "war" arc, the fact of Lakan barely participating was unsatisfying to say the least.

Anyways, hope Shisui is dead for real now. I never connected with her character and the idea of her surviving the fall + Jinshi's hairpin stopping that bullet to her chest would be beyond laughable to me.
