That was an honorable death to some extent if only Thorfinn didn’t get caught Thor’s wouldn’t have had to die but still it was a good way to go

That was kind of stupid. There was no way for Thors to know Askelladen would be honoroable; everything he did indicated he would just kill or enslave everyone. His sacrifice feels weak because everything he did would have led his son to death if not for the fact Askelladan was secretly honorable, which Thors had no way of knowing. A better show would have come up with a stronger and more intelligent reason for him having to sacrifice himself.

So his father died the death of a pacifist, huh? Hate these people, but they are too common in anime.

But why the heck is Thorfinn on that boat? You wanna tell me no one noticed that he isn't on Leif's ship when they departed? LOL

What an incredible episode, Thors is fully capable of slaughtering all of the men and by all I mean ALL of them, including Askeladd. However id doing so, only he will survive the battle. Being the father he is and a man who cares about his villagers, he chose to heroically sacrifice himself for the good and longevity of the village and its villagers. However, in doing so, he awakens the absolute fury that lay asleep within Thorfinn. It would take years for this boy to truly understands what his father meant by saying warriors requires no weapon.

Behold, a child of whom you may ridicule may be the very same person who will avenge his father's death, Askeladd is skilled enough of a warrior to not have to worry about Thorfinn for now, but the same can't be said to his ruffians of a crew.

Great episode! From the story to the animation, I am completely sold out. There has been a while since a series has grabbed my attention from episode 1.

Also, as a fan of the series Vikings and their history, exploring the mythology in other parts of the world is fantastic. For instance, I had no idea that a group fled to Iceland to escape the ruling of a new king. Finding small details like this is really interesting.

Thors fit the image of Artorius in Askeladd's head so he was genuinely upset he had to kill him. I don't think he was joking entirely when he asked him to be their leader. RIP THORS.

Those kids that wanted so badly to go to war and fight are fucking pussies. They talked so big about killing people and then they shit their pants when they have to fight. Fucks sake just let them die so they learn their lesson.

And Thorfinn why the fuck is he crying that fucking bitch it was all his fault that Thors died

If none of those ignorant pussies in denial went with Thors he wouldn't have died fucking hell

It was an incredibly painful and sad episode. Thors, what a badass you were. They didn't follow the rules of the duel and Thors won fair and square. But, in the end, there was nothing stopping them from taking Thors' life.

Thorfinn's anger is justified and I hope he avenges his fathers' death.

Well, saw this coming but hit hard nonetheless. I was confused why Thors allowed the arrows to hit him but made sense by the end. Seems like it will be a tale of revenge .... or redemption if they go there.

Well... that was expected (from reading the synopsis). It was definitely sad. I feel like some people are forgetting that Thor does not want to kill anyone anymore since his escape; his daughter was his reason (correct me if I am wrong). They were outnumbered, too. Thorfinn being there definitely did not help the situation. However, I feel like even if he was not there, I feel like Bjon would have grabbed Ari or someone else. Askeladd and his men play dirty >:[.

Can't wait to see how this will go.

It went just as I had thought. RIP Thors, he was the kind of man most boys wishes to become like.

The story of Thorfin's revenge now begins. Now the question is how he's gonna get out alive outta that ship and why did no one else stop him from hiding in that ship?

This anime continues to deliver.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.
Feeling half happy, half sad.

The intensity of this episode went through the roof. Thors death was inevitable, especially with how Askeladd planned his attack. Nonetheless it's just sad to see a man like Thors going down in such a way. I honestly feel Thors went so soft on Askeladd's men mainly because of Thorfinn. He didn't want his son to remember how his father killed anyone. Even if I will never know, it would've been interesting to see how all of this would've gone down if Thors was alone.

Askeladd seems like an interesting character, but it's too early to tell what his motives are. Thorfinn's facial expression at the end was definitely something else. Even the "tough" pirates were scared. Reminded me a lot of Eren. I guess the story just has begun.

Before I start the episode, I already read the synopsis so I know it is a given Askelad will kill Thors. Lesson to self: Just follow the anime recommender tool without reading the synopsis. It is much more fun to watch a show blind.

Oh so that's why he is dressed like that in the OP. He is sold as a slave probably.

I agree with Thors. A real warrior definitely does not need a sword. Thorfinn is still an annoying kid but at least now he has a reason to be annoying (his dad died). Hopefully we get to adult Thorfinn soon cuz child Thorfinn is annoying.

Thors truly was a coward, he may have been strong but his mind was weak. Unfit for his time and only capable of gaining the respect of onlookers. The man really went soft, you could see it in his kids and how this ended. Pacifism is nice but you’ve got to look at context, violence and death gets shit done in Viking times. Thors’ mind lost its edge so he became afraid of taking lives and dealing death.

A traumatizing event that scars the main character followed by some kind of time skip, predictable. Now we wait to see if the kid ends up going after revenge or develops into the better version of his dad.

The animation has been stellar, and the CGI is there but is very subtle. And Wit's studio direction never fails to impress me.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

Thors is dead, he got 28 wounded but he still didn't kill anyone. Absolute chad made me cry. Askeladd has some honor but he still needs to the job. Seeing anger in Thorfinn's and him saying he will kill them all was brutal. Let's see ehere the story heads

Thors pulling a dude forward from behind by his own axe and then elbowing him in the face, or throwing an oar to someone he threw off the ship to save him from drowning. It's small details like these which I've missed or forgotten that is helping make this re-watch so good.

I was so bummed out before when Thors died, and was maybe even half as angry at Askeladd as Thorfinn was. I think want I wanted was a pure revenge story in which Thorfinn eventually kills Askeladd. Spoiler alert: that's not what we get, and despite how great this anime is, I was still disappointed. But I was ignorant and narrow-minded then, not knowing what was to come. Now, knowing everything, man this truly does hit hard. I had glossed over the immense respect that Askeladd had for Thors despite having just met, he seemed liked he almost regretted having to kill such a great man, and looked depressed even as they were heading back. Despite basically being a pirate, I feel like he still would have wanted to honour the rules of the duel had he not been paid to do a job.

Askeladd doesn't say it out loud to anyone when they found out that Thorfinn was stowed away on the ship, but I'd like to think that he didn't want to throw him overboard as suggested by his men was because he felt the least he could do to honour the Troll of Jom would at least be to not kill his son. Knowing how well-written Askeladd's character is from here on out will just make every scene with him so much more intriguing.

Bro if this was real his kid would've gotten thrown into the sea and the others would've been sold as slaves as soon as he died lol, no honor whatsoever. Convenient plot development is all this was. Then his kid stays with them and he's like whatever ("he'll die anyway")? Guess the author really struggled in better formulating this transitional part of the story. But then Thors was just yeeting bodies around and one guy went berserk on shrooms so you can't be that mad with the unrealism.

Tragically I already knew how this ended from reading the manga, but fuck man this was still an emotional gut punch. Thorfinn's cries of vengeance... incredible. I was 50/50 on the dub, but that moment convinced me.

Bro is a monster what type of jumping and strength power is this 😂. He threw a grown-ass man and was jumping from boat to boat, The worst part is he did this with no weapons👀👀. I can tell just from that small initial encounter that Askeladd is also very strong, Thor's was simply stronger. Askeladd is a bastard though not honouring his word but he is a pirate so what did we expect? How is bro half dead and still putting the fear of death into these guys? R.I.P. to this amazing soldier & father & Husband. The saliva dripping out of Thorfinn's mouth was the perfect touch and his Voice Actor really embodied his rage. This entire episode was perfection.

That was a good fight. It's a waste that Thors is such a good guy. He could've led a powerful Viking warband and become as great as Ragnar Lodbrok.
I see now why Askeladd is an interesting villain. I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen between him and Thorfinn.
