@RobertBobert Weird that he disliked it, I actually prefer Hyouka anime to his novel, the novel is a little bit more pessimistic (realistic) compared to the anime for my taste.
@VMPL I don't know all the details, but there were some disputes between them that ultimately slowed down the production of a new anime if they wanted to at all. However, this is not the first time KyoAni has fallen into this.

I honestly only watched this because the poster with the sweets & Eve doing the op interested me, but safe to say I loved this first episode. I loved the animation, and I don't know exactly what it was but something about it just felt so melancholic and familiar? Not really sure, but either way I enjoyed this first episode a lot

Not sure what to make of this anime....I mean visually it looks great, but the actual content is a bit bland? like what is the premise of this anime lol

Funny enough I kept thinking to myself, this seems like Hyouka, and looked it up just now, deadass it's literally the same guy that made Hyouka 💀💀💀 Hopefully this anime builds up to something more grand/more serious. I'd rather not have a repeat of "hey lets solve this pointless mundane mystery this week that ultimately isn't that serious"

@DoctorWasabi thank you for your comment, I wanna try to watch it, but seeing other people comment on this post, makes me don't want to. because I hate the experience watching hyouka. it's not good mystery anime, it just school slice of life anime. sorry for bad english

Oh damn, the last scene is soul-crushing.

That aside, I coulnd't really get into Houyka and if it's going to be similar, I probably won't enjoy this one either. The case was already too weird on so many levels, and that Dojima guy is so insufferable, jeez.

It has the essence of Hyouka, but in another layer, I felt a fantastic connection, it's incredible, it's a love letter to all Hyouka fans. It may be compared a lot to Hyouka but I don't have any other reference that has that concept. I just love it

It shows potential. I appreciate the use of the 21:9 aspect ratio, which suits the anime's style with its highly cinematic presentation. Now, let's see where the plot takes us.

The episode as a whole was pretty nice, and it showed that the MC is pretty smart. All that to be ruined in the last minute. How is it possible that he listened to that conversation between the delinquents and he couldn't predict what was about to happen? Basically he's only smart when the author wants him to be, and then becomes dumb when the story need a conflict to proceed, which I assume will be solved in a smart way.

That's called inconsistency/bad writing. 4/10.

maybe ive watched too much anime but i feel like the whole cringy teen "someone like me is never going to be normal/find love" is a bit overplayed and tiresome at this point. like asian parents i feel nothing but disappointment when i see gag-inducing finger-fiddling weeaboo behavior. at least put a dumb spin on it like an actual mysterious setting or theme like i dream of bunny senpai or any other mystery harem/romance.

I remember I had my problems with Hyouka, but someone remind me... was Hyouka also "SUPER CRINGE" like this?

Kyouka had its cringe moments, but this anime is so weird. It feels like both MC are aliens pretending to be humans or something
@curvedtree It's not just the story and character behavior, the production also contributes to it. Did you notice the lack of music? In theory it's to feel more "natural", less "anime", but in practice it's uncanny because it's too silent. This isn't good sound design, the sound feels dead.

I'll take this opportunity to bring here much full non abridged comment were I try to explain it better:

It was a bit of a struggle to watch this episode. At some point midway the thought “Kindergarden Haruki Murakami” came to mind.

I understand that the author has his ideias and he puts effort into his writing to convey them in a logical way, I get it, if I pay attention I can see a bit of it, I can get the “pay off” at the end, but still… I ended feeling a bit annoyed bit it all, it was a bit “cringe”.
For all the effort he puts into coming up with something “logical” his “writing” still could be much “better” than this, any good expectation I could have with this series was dropped during that restaurant scene. The way both characters commented on each other is not the smartest of the expositions, also, the information that they gave was a bit irrelevant IMO. Was it really essential to point that she likes sweets and he is the heir of a japanese sweets shop?
Aaaah, makes me tired thinking about he story and characters, I can’t stand their “philosophies” and “ideologies”, specially when it makes they so “chuunibyou”, after all, if you’re trying to be “ordinary” this just means you’re saying you think you aren’t. What so “extraordinary” about you boy?! Aaaaaah, but the direction maybe wasn’t much better.
It’s all pretty, but the way it tries to make it seem and feel “mundane” and “common” ends being just uncanny, at least to me.
Removing music doesn’t work that well if the sound design can’t step up, by the way, this being something that KyoAni excess as much as they do with their animation.

This was pretty darn good imo. A tad different from Hyouka’s very anime like atmosphere where every character has over the top quirks, this on the other hand has a grounded close to realism atmosphere and character personalities. I can see why the author wasnt much of a fan of the Hyouka anime adaptation as it removed the realism of his work. I def prefer this one over Hyouka for now. The mc is a lot more pro active compared to Oreki and while Chitana does have her charms the fmc here is just darn adorable! She also has Yamada’s va from BokuYaba.
Cant wait for more.

@PaninaManina I see how you feel now, definitely no one would be able to infer that by "super cringe" you meant all that. Besides some of your questions are hardly answered in the first episode of most animes, if you are willing give it more time, maybe you'll get the answers you want, the lack of music, however, might be a conscious choice to place another layer of "ordinariness" in the show, or it was just a bad choice that they will fix in the Blu-ray.

I like it so far. I like the art/animation style as well. Feels a bit slow but I think it sits well with the theme and plot of the anime. Huge fan of Hyouka so it's no surprise I'll probably enjoy this since it's the same author.

So I watched the 1st episode of this today, and although I haven’t seen Hyouka, I really saw some sparks of Monogatari Series vibes, I told this to a friend and basically he said I was delusional and that this is basically Hyouka continuation with other name.

And I’m sure it is, as I said, I haven’t seen hyouka, but I’m not saying this is not very similar to it, I’m just saying I perceived a little of monogatari series vibe, not a lot, it’s not like I’m saying it’s a monogatari ripoff, it’s simply that I felt a little tiny bit of monogatari series vibe to this episode, and since the series revolves around mysteries or “cases” it does seem to me that maybe the author does put a lot of hyouka vibes and a little spice of monogatari Eries vibes to it, or am I just crazy to think that way?

Thanks for reading, sorry if I repeated something too much, I tend to do that 😅

Honezawa Yonobu let's GOOOO!!! Love the main characters. Yuki is the cutest, must protecc.

This definitely gives the Hyouka vibes, but I love how comfortable our MCs are with each other compared to Houtarou and Eru - you can feel their friendship. Kobato-kun is definitely used to being Yuki's shield whenever she feels shy ^^

I still don't know if they're actually part animal and part human, and if there's some supernatural stuff going on or if it's just symbolism? I'm hoping there will be some great mysteries to solve this season~

I see I'm not the only one to get Hyouka vibes with the school mystery-solving theme, which is no surprise given it's the same author of the LN series. I still wish we'd get a 2nd season to Hyouka one day, but I digress.

With the aspect ratio and opening by Eve, this could easily have been a high school movie drama, and I would not have been able to tell the difference in budget sunk into it. Top-notch stuff.

Riding the bike with no helmets and 2 people on top of that...it's no wonder Osanai is worried about the police stopping them.

Maybe it's a product of how we grew up, but I would never have left the tarts in the bike basket before going into the store, because I apparently live in one of the top cities with the most bikes stolen per second in the world (So I would have taken the wheel and seat off along with me before heading in). Japan is usually more lax about lost things, where you might even find your lost wallet right where you dropped it, or may find it after someone turns it into a police box. Must be nice living in a high-trust society...that being said, crimes may be low, but not zero, as evident here.

Bummer about the limited tarts, where both of them were ruined...I'd be tempted to knock some teeth out of that bike thief for that reason alone, more than for the stolen bike itself. And here I was starting to feel bad for ugly-mohawk guy, after he said his own bike got stolen...not anymore.

Also, is Gifu doing a tourism promotion? If I had a nickel for every anime series taking place in Gifu prefecture this year, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's strange that it has happened twice.

There's a very good chance that this might be the best-looking show of Summer 2024. Just breathtaking background art, lighting and atmosphere. The lighting in particular looked so good that the ED with live-action background plus animated characters felt completely cohesive and believable. I didn't even notice the awkward 3D models mentioned in this thread.

I'm not really sold on the characters and the writing, though. It's all very strange and cryptic, while being somewhat over-serious. The deductions were pretty barebones and felt like they had some big leaps of logic.

I did like Hyouka overall, but I sympathize a lot with people who don't, and I definitely didn't like the earlier, "smaller" cases in Hyouka. It feels like there's still a lot missing here in the first episode. And I'm not sure if the show will eventually fill in the blanks or just leave things vague and unexplained till the end.

Not me expecting the studio to cover all volumes of the Shoushimin Series, given that it starts with the Volume 1, which is The Spring Special Strawberry Tart Case (though it is aired this Summer 2024).

As expected, this series garnered a mixed reaction to its pilot episode as a result of comparison to Hyōka or other works and their preferences. Know that Episode 1 only comprises 10% of the anime, thus it's too early to judge the book by its cover. Despite all of these, it does not meet my expectations (yet) but I still intend to finish this series without applying the 37% rule.

I hope that the adaptations for the succeeding volumes are set in stone to compensate for the lack of number of episodes.

AND THIS JEWEL? WHERE HAS THIS JEWEL COME FROM?
I had not heard anything, its cover simply caught my attention, and wow, it is magnificent, the animation from the 1st second becomes a visual delight since it has great cinematography, even more so when listening to Eve in the opening

The audio editing also seems majestic to me, the voices, sounds, details, all of that creates a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

And it doesn't end there, in all this you see 2 unique and mysterious characters who will develop an excellent plot, I didn't understand it but it looks interesting.
I loved it

Nice OP song. I'm a little bit surprised with the aspect ratio they use here. The visuals and animations are great. Compared to Hyouka, I think this adaptation might be more heavy in term of overall atmosfer, but the conversations are just the same vibe as Hyouka.

Well, in this firts episode, it feels like we are entering the story in the middle of something that is happening. I don't know if I like the black bars on the scream like a movie. The minimally expository script is good but has many loose end.

This is the best art direction I've seen so far this season, and it feels like a movie. The ED in particular feels hyperrealistic.

Anyway, I looked closely at the synopsis as to why they want to be ordinary. It looks like mc is a genius like Shin'ichi when it comes to detective work, but he doesn't want to use his skills.

I don't know the writer or the studio, but why does it feel that it isn't as hyped as other titles this season?

eta: I'll now have to watch Hyouka to make the proper comparison.

Loved the choice of the aspect ratio, gives the episode more room for beautiful visuals especially during the last quarter, it also enhances the dramatic feeling the series is trying to convey and adds to the suspense(which I hope there is more of in the coming episodes)

There is some characterisation Immediately at the beginning, and no time is taken to introduce the two protagonists.

I'm Expecting more plot twists and suspense for each episode, but still wondering if it will have a connected plot with a causal chain or more of an episodic structure with character and theme unifying the plot.

Also, I loved the outro. The realistic visuals look good and Blend really well with the characters.

All in all, this has the potential to be a decent watch and got me interested in watching the other anime by the same creator.

Ambience of the episode and the cinematic aspect ratio with stunning visuals felt like watching a movie. The character interactions felt like outcast trying to fit into the new atmosphere or new place with some rules.

The fast cuts at the end confused it even further as to what's happening and going to happen. Also the OP , ED and soundtracks are simple and totally with the series theme. This could be well worth the mystery and I'm hooked.

Punishingly slow eye candy with no stakes. What brought me to this show was the premise of the characters wanting a normal peaceful life but mysterious shenanigans getting in their way. I wasn't expecting them to find Bigfoot or break up a ring of baby-sacrificing Satanists in the first episode or anything, but... helping a bunch of bland characters look for a purse, some bland guy's love letter, and a couple tarts getting splatted onto the pavement is pretty weak for a start. I'm going to stick with it since it's only 10 episodes, so hopefully I look back and eat those words.

Main character can somehow figure out hours of a person's movements down to every minute detail because he saw them waving an arm outside, but a group of thugs basically standing in front of him blaring fog horns and shouting "WE'RE GONNA STEAL YOUR BIKE" and suddenly his brain's leaking out of his ears.
