In sonny boy they go to another world... multiple times at that
SUDDENLY TRANSPORTED to another world. That's the key difference otherwise Death Note is an isekai as well with its Shinigami Realm.
@TRC_Randy I mean yeah, I know.

It's weird that you quoted the sonny boy example of all things, that's probably the most definitive isekai out of the 3 I named. At least in fma it happens at the end of the story, and in death parade it's bit of a stretch to consider after life "transporting to another world", but sonny boy is absolutely an isekai by all metrics.

@APolygons2 i'm not saying Sonny Boy isn't. Just specifying that "they go to another world" as in suddenly.

I am no fan of modern fantasy isekai, but from the options listed I would take Jobless Reincarnation. The haters that appear every time it is mentioned rather add to the appeal, and even make me want to watch the second season rather soon.

If Twelve Kingdoms or Sonny Boy or Aura Battler Dunbine could be selected, I would take one of these.

how can mushoku be the best when it has mediocre world building, ugly character design, no plot, no interesting characters, no cool developments, no twists, boring background art. I swear, you people are either trying to be funny or you just didn't watch any isekai.
Just be sincere, you just like it because loodie has infinite mana for no reason and an army of moe blob waifus, stuff that most isekai have but compared to mushoku, most isekai have better waifus.
@Catalano Its called "bandwagoning".

Pretty standard internet activity.

As for me, I'd gonna say probably NGNL. One of the few anime where I was highly invested in what people had to say.

I see Zero no Tsukaima, it was such a classic. I don't believe term Isekai even existed back then, don't to mention popularity of that theme.

Isekai no Yushi ("Warrior from Another World"), a novel by Haruka Takachiho, used this term as far back as when it was first published in the 1970s. It's true that "isekai" as a genre hadn't been popularised when Zero no Tsukaima was originally released, but the word predates it.

After watching many, many isekai shows, to this day, I still only like two of them. And one of the two had a bad season in their mix as well sadly.

Mushoku Tensei's easily not just my favorite isekai anime but one of my favorite anime of all time. Lazy to talk about why since I raved about it enough over the previous few months and years even but it's the one that makes the other isekai anime look a lot more frustrating to me. One thing I will mention here is that it uses the 'isekai' element of the story really well with how layered Rudeus as a character is and comparing and contrasting his growth and flaws with his old life constantly with his newer one without discarding it completely or only referencing it one time.

Iruma-kun's the other isekai anime I like but season 3 did flop for me. The pacing of season 3 was really rough when having to handle one lengthy arc compared to the first two seasons and the flaws the adaptation had in the earlier seasons got exposed since the slower pacing and limited animation wasn't as much of an issue when the arcs were much shorter. Still, the first two seasons I genuinely did like and would not mind watching again.

Not much of a fan of the rest. Konosuba's movie was good but the seasons... not as much. Everything else is just forgettable/disappointing/bad/terrible.

Surprised that neither Digimon or Magic Knight Rayearth aren't options. The latter of these two is what I would choose were it an option. It might seem like a genre soup, but it is a quite enjoyable piece of media.
@Fleeting_Dream Different times than before. Few people know of shows like Rayearth or Escaflowne, let alone of Dunbine which literally set the template for an isekai title.
Rayearth isn't known even amongst some CLAMP fans other than Mokona being in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Probably because it's their most "normal" title, no yaoi, no moe like in Cardcaptor Sakura or even Angelic Layer, + it has mecha which are a huge pleb filter (plus it was directed by Toshiki Hirano of Dangaioh and Iczer fame, so the show looks more like Hirano with some CLAMP rather than just CLAMP).
The remake could be... anything, really. I'm not a fan of remakes, Rayearth is just so thoroughly 90s that I can't imagine how different it will look in digital animation.

...The robots don't show up for most of the first half of Rayearth. CLAMP is pretty well-known for a series with significantly more robot in it in Code geass (They only did character design for it, but I feel like the designs are distinct enough that it comes to people's minds)

How would you pick the 'best isekai' in an objective manner? Or at least as close to objective as it can be.

If taken literally, a story set in/related to another world needs to place a decently high level of attention/emphasis on the 'another world' part.

I picked isekai ojisan because I like the story, but it was a lazy choice because there are too many options to consider on the list (and also stories that aren't on the list.)

Yet if this was objective... then it could be:

Shows like Youjo Senki, that somewhat mirror real world history (which adds a lot of context) in an alternate-reality way, is a contender for 'best isekai' because the other world is relatively really believable.

Gate could be 'best isekai' because it directly confronts two worlds together in both cultural and militaristic ways.

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar is a contender because (at least in the anime) it presents a group of 'normal teenagers' in a fantastical scenario in a fairly 'realistic' way. Yet at the same time, many shows also tend to drop off the 'isekai' aspect...

Then there are also stories like Re:Zero, Slime, and Mushoku Tensei which expand the setting into a distinct separate world from the other generic worlds. Plot-wise, or whatever, they are different shows aiming for different things and are about different people. But when it comes to the 'ISEKAI' aspect, it's obviously hard to determine which is an 'objectively' better isekai.
How well do they deal with the 'another world' aspect of their stories, and is better than other stories that can warrant them becoming known as the 'best isekai'?

MT is a grind for me at this point. Loved the first 9 episodes, but that show lacks direction. It finally did something at the end of this last cour, but compared to other isekai, MT fails to have a consistency about its story telling.

Death March because of Karhu

Death March is an isekai series similar to One Punch Man. It focuses around an overpowered mr. nice guy Jesus named Satou who saves women from slavery among other things with the powers of an I.T. guru, and makes them his property.

The events include mr. nice guy raping and pillaging like a viking, except he does the polar opposite because he is nice. Other characters in this series are women. Slave girls 1-7 and a knight. Most of them are very much into mr. nice guy but he himself is a nice guy who doesn't use women. We shan't never know what type of a glopping sound this guy makes.

What about the most common quality trait in anime: character development? Satou is already perfect so naturally, he isn't developed, but our main girls and side chicks all like Satou more at the end than in the beginning = character development. The best part is how much this makes sense, after all, there is no reason to not like the guy.

The art and sounds follow the average production values which have been the standard for anime since 2013. Nothing to complain there. Just name your favorite hair color and there is a girl who has it. Smart choices.

When it comes to enjoyment, I haven't had this much fun with something that is close to unwatchable since Shingeki no kyoujin S01 aired. I highly recommend this show because it never tried to be anything, and thus didn't fail at it.

Geass has nothing to do with CLAMP, they just did early character designs.
Also, the same applies to Geass, the only reason it survives in the public consciousness is because of YouTubers. 2006/2007 was a different time when mecha didn't net instant ridicule from kiddies who watch too much battle shounen and seasonals.

I like isekai where it doesn't forget it is in fact an isekai and the MC actually learns to improve instead of being rewarded for their bad behaviour. Mushoko does not deserve top spot for those reasons

Now and Then, Here and There by a long way.

Plenty of missing options amongst a huge crowd vying for second place. Fushigi Yuugi, Escaflowne, 12 Kingdoms etc.

If considering non-anime, then the first couple of years of Doctor Who are actually isekai.
