Anyone who tries to take my freedom, I’ll take theirs instead - Eren as a child

That is exactly what Eren is trying to do, he never changed, and everyone ask why Eren changed so much. Just let the guy go and save all his people.

Eren can control those titans. He just didn't. The reason why is he's so deep into doing the Rumbling he's not even thinking straight. It's supposed to emphasize how he's lost it. The story isn't justifying Eren's character and neither should anyone.

Great follow up episode to what were 3 of the best this arc had to offer. Looks like the soundtrack finally got back into rhythm these past few weeks, solid once again this week. And the animation was mostly good, lots of 2D for 3DMG vs Titans which MAPPA had previously used CG for in the past. Gabi got some shine as did most of the alliance… and Annie is finally back even if she’s an awful character

We've got some Wit level ODM sakuga in this episode.
Not nearly as fluid as Imai’s sequences. Better than any 3DMG MAPPA did prior tho.

Imo comparing anything to Imai is unfair, any sequence he makes is just out of this world

Though, yeah, the action this episode was amazing, but still not quite there if you want to compare to Wit's AOT

The start and the end of the episode was alright, but holy shit, I hate with passion how forceful the Braus intervention is, I hated it the first time and I hated it now, why would it need to be a circle? Cant people understand the same idea with a more dynamic and less predictable approach? The action scenes were also extremely mediocre, dunno what kind of coping people be taking to eat it, not even talking about the animation and art. When will this PS2 game come out?

As a manga reader... Dude I actually cant contain myself hearing 'Barricades' song!! Such a banger since It was released as an album back when Season 2 released... Also is it just me or Connie kidnapped Falco a bit sooner than in the manga? felt like it happens a bit later but maybe I forgot about it cuz' it's quite irrelevant. Good Episode also...

Also R.I.P Commander Pyxis and other Titanized Soldiers. It reminds us of How it was back in Season 1 but less casualties and more advanced warfare, quite nostalgic. And finally Annie shows up... About time.

Did not like that Eren left the pure titans running rampant, seemed like a contrivance to redeem Gabby with the Braus family. I mean he is destroying the world to protect the people of Paradis, how is leaving those titans running loose help that? And we saw he CAN control them when he touched his dad's first wife a long time ago. Oh well at least Annie was back.

I agree this seemed like a contrivance. Is this ever explained? If so, please do not spoil.

Those pure titans belong to Zeke they have his spinal fluid which means they are his not Eren.

So were the ones he controlled before. Though after the last episode where we see just how many people were crushed by the walls, I guess it's obvious Eren just doesn't give a damn.

It's been a long time since we've seen an epic titan killing sequence, and it was set to the classic song Barricades from season 2 (damn though, RIP Pixis ;_;). Plus, a titan-shifting child was kidnapped. History continues to repeat itself. At least amidst all this Kaya got to see how absolutely awful Gabi feels about her role in all this. And it was a very nice moment of connection when she instantly realized that Connie's mom's situation was because of Marley's invasion 4 years ago - she really gets now how the wheel of vengeance keeps turning back and forth

Annie finally returns next ep!

ANNIE!!!!!! only took her, what? 10 years to come back lol ready to Fuck Shit Up yes girl get it

god the parallels in this episode! gabi saving kaya like sasha! the fight at the fortress - reminded me of the battle at utgard castle in season 2, but look how powerful the squad is now!! compared to how helpless they were back then GOD this show! that shot of mikasa cutting down those titans and their blood spraying around her, she's such a good character when she isn't running after eren all the time and so powerful. imagine if levi was there, eren would have shit his pants and none of this madness would have happened xo

i love how dynamic this show is, it's such a rush to watch - the only thing i'm not the biggest fan of is the persistent orange tint to everything, but i suppose that's a visual indicator of how apocalyptic the situation is

also connie, it's all well and good saving your mother, but will she handle being a titan? especially one of the nine titans? gosh that's a sticky situation poor guy

and rip pixis and nile

"Escape the forest, even if can't we must keep trying "
That's the core, more than anything that's the core of attack on titan

niccolo’s statement is speaking towards the human capacity for violence that maintains the cycles of hatred that plague the world. this is consistent with this season’s ending song ‘akuma no ko’ (child of the devil) that is centred around eren, the embodiment of that cycle.
everyone has a reason for their actions, but underpinning those reasons is the ‘devil’ (japanese used here is also ‘akuma’) that we can choose to reject or give in to.

this is where eren diverges from his parallels - reiner & gabi. reiner admits in the basement scene that beyond all the environmental factors such as indoctrination his need to be a hero, to be admired, was what drove him to break down the walls. he recognised how hollow that pursuit was and now keeps moving forward due to his desire to protect the next generation - gabi & falco.

gabi is another person who could easily blame their childhood circumstances for their actions but instead chooses to reflect and more importantly, to change. it is this capacity for change that makes them different from eren, and it’s highlighted in the parallel mirror scenes.
both share the same indomitable will in the face of impossible odds and both want to protect their friends, but gabi is recognising her past mistakes and is trying to do better meanwhile eren remains who he has always been.

this brings us to aots commentary on ‘freedom’.
epictetus, the greek stoic philosopher, said ‘no man is free who is not master of himself’. the demon within everyone in aot is desire - for gabi its praise, for reiner admiration, for eren its freedom itself. reiner x gabi acknowledge the demon & reject it, eren succumbs to it.

this is why eren’s words in marley are so important. he too acknowledges this demon exists, he understands that they are all the same, but this does not CHANGE how he acts - it only adds to the self loathing those actions bring him. it ties to another theme, kenny’s speech.
‘everyone is a slave to something’ is very similar to niccolos words which are used to emphasise the theme, but it’s a more clear replication of seneca’s (another stoic philosopher) letters to lucilius.

that is the crux of this episode, tying together key themes of the story
while expanding the ‘true’ messages behind them. yes the world might seem dark, and grim, but to strive to create a better one regardless of the situation is the only thing that can change that. to escape the forest we created, we have to change ourselves.

it’s applied very well through commandant shadis. a man who only saw himself as a bystander, a man who led others to their deaths in pursuit of his own selfish goals is now leading the ones who beat him near-death to their survival.

the visual call back is to show his change

he embodies what the survey core was SUPPOSED to mean, not what it was twisted into first by him and then by a fascist regime through floch. heroism, a pursuit of knowledge/understanding, a beacon of hope. THAT is what the wings of freedom stand for, regardless of what he wears

it’s also why floch is such a good character. a man who succumbs to his fears and insecurities, someone who values the devils in others (first erwin then eren) in order to keep going. he gains power through fear and lives in his hatred, he opposes the messaging of the story
that’s why he isn’t any help while the others fight off the titans, a good narrative tool used to show he lacks the growth the others have gone through.

the callbacks to s1 show that while the world is still cruel, our characters are growing - while he stays the same

the cycle of hatred is caused by the desires of humans. while that is true, and while there may not be an easy solution, the only choice we have is to keep trying if we want to change that.

‘love someone inside the walls. if you can’t do that it’ll only repeat’.

Very dynamic episode with very strong visuals and osts.
Again really really elevated the source material,no complaints at all, perfect episode

Episode 6 Review:
First part of the episode shows us how eren's friends arent able to trust eren or understand what to do then gabi having her eren like moments showing us how she is also victim of this stuff and a mirror of eren (but gabi hasnt suffered as much as eren nor does she have motives like eren ,falco on the other hand is not like gabi and understands who is to blame here )

Second part could be considered one of the best scenes (thanks to that godtier BGM)in all of AOT because its just pure baddassery and also nostaglic because its eren's friends VS titans like season 1 but more badass as they are more skilled
(rip nile and pixis btw)

also floch being the jerk he is but also supporting eren is really understandable seeing how his experiences and past is

Looks like there's some effect coming up after the rumbling, even at the paradise island. Pure titan still wondering around thanks to Zeke that seems unable to survive from the impact and Eren didn't give a damn about that because he's leading the rumbling in front. Back to the casual titan slaughtering mode, bgm nailed it this time. Even if they manage to survive, some others death, and there's still the enemy among your friends. Annie return, its about time! Gabi so manage to be a good girl this time, but unfortunately Connie become a shitass after what has done. Alright, very well. Lets see how much everything solved next...

Seeing some Titan killing scenes really gives so nostalgic vibes! The rumbling looks so intense, and it really looks like they are in an apocalyptic world. That scene of Gabi killing that Titan was so OP, and it really looked like Sasha. I am still not over Sasha's death though :(
Also, I loved that they used Barricades as an OST for the killing scenes, it brings back so many memories. This season is so iconic and good. Attack on Titan only gets better and better. I am so glad we got to see Mikasa being OP once again, seeing Mikasa killing those Titans with such ease is always so satisfying!
But unfortunately, one of the Titans was commancer Pixis :(
AoT can't really give us more than 2 episodes without a character death. First Falco's brother (which I am still processing), Porco (another one that I still didn't realise he is gone for good) and now Commander Pixis? I still remember him from all the way back season 1, and how he saved Eren's life. Now that you look at it, imagine if he chose not to save Eren.
Also, this makes Jean's plan fall apart, since they can't use Falco to bring Pixis back anymore. Talking about that, it's so sad to see Connie and the others arguing on who should they use Falco on, it brings back memories from S3 Pt.2, and those are really tragic ones. Connie ended up "kidnapping" Falco, to restore his mother, and you can see Gabi will not accept that, she's already traumatized by everything that happened, and although I still can't forgive her for what she did to Sasha, this episode made me have more compasion for her, and I think losing Falco would be really devastating to her. Also, I wonder if Connie's mother would turn into a normal Titan, since she has some health problems (something with her back or legs, right?), would she regenerate those lesions, or would she turn into an abnormal Titan? Well, I guess I will wait to see, this if they don't stop Connie.
AND OMG ANNIE IS BACK. OUR GIRL ANNIE IS FINALLY BACK, AFTER 56 EPISODES, AFTER 8 YEARS, WE FINALLY GET ANNIE BACK. The fact that Reiner's injury was due to his armor not being hardned, and that that point was so really important for the realization of this part is so amazing, as usual with AoT, that always pays great attention to details like these.
I can't wait to se what the next episodes have in store for us, and I guess the good thing about joining to this season late, is the fact that I don't have to wait 1 week for each episode!

The animation in this episode is by far the best in the season so far, the animation along with the surreal orchestral OST in the background result in some badass hype-inducing moments. Seeing the trainees along with our lovely survey corps member slaughtering thee titans left and right to the tune of the music really brought back the nostalgia from... Welll almost 10 years ago... Back in 2013 when the first season is airing, back when things are simpler, when it was just the humans against the mindless titans.'

Gabi is getting some major major character development, her voice acting added a new dimension to the believability of her character even more. You can't help but like her, or perhaps at the very least, pity her. Unless ofc if Sasha is still on your mind...

Lo and behold! Annie is back!

also i really like Gabi in this episode the fact that she saved Kaya from a titan was so cool but i still can't forgive her for killing Sasha, and shooting Eren's head off. sorry but she deserves to go to jail and suffer. the scene where all the squad were killing the titans was awesome and badass! now i wonder what's going to happen to Connie's mother is she still alive will she be able to eat Falco or not. and as for Annie i'm really curious what she's going to do now that's she's awake

Goosebumps in this episode!

If we could just revive Erwin, Levi and everybody who shinzo sasageyo'ed their life for this day. I wonder what will happen then.. At least there was justice in their lost lives.. It hurts soo much seeing Pyxis as a normal titan, he really fulfilled his duty until it happened.. Urgh, that geezer drinks too much booze.. T_T

My feelings are so heavy right now..

Let's not forget Keith Shadis... "I don't remember teaching you guys to whimper and cry when you see a Titan! Put on ODM gear! There's some of the old design left!" And to think that his students punched him, mocked him for using the old equipment and teaching the old ways of killing the titans... you never know when an outdated method will come in handy in the future.. God if I got isekai'd into this anime, I'm going to be so thankful belonging to the 104th cadets who survived until this day, who learned to use both the traditional and modern equipments..
