Manga, novels, and games tend to feature different tropes, even when they're all aimed at the same demographic. If you're going to tell shoujo manga fans to watch something else, you might as well tell them to watch shounen; there are so many good ones these days.

Considering that Western fandom has little to no influence on the direction the Anime industry takes, Western "Shojo manga" fans might as well watch "Shounen" or anime that isn't specifically tagged as "Shoujo" on MAL. The alternative is simply finding a new medium to get into.

One of the reason I stopped watching Western TV programing in the late 90s early 2000s was because it was simply being flooded with reality tv shows. Literally the only Western TV series I ever watched religiously since was "Game of thrones" and that was on HBO. I specifically subscribed to HBO just for that series when each season aired.

Apparently Crunchyroll just did a presentation to Japanese investors saying that shoujo overperforms expectations, the market is heavily underserved, and they want to help produce more anime for female audiences. So I have some hope on that front.
Also for whatever reason, conservative execs somehow don't realize a lot of boys absolutely adore shoujo. There's a lot of lazy stereotyping among the people who decide what to produce, and it's made anime more generic and limited in scope.

Lucky for us! Situtation is probably going to change soon. Crunchyroll has finally noticed it:
Crunchyroll: Shojo Anime Genre Has Strong Growth Potential
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2022-03-31/crunchyroll-shojo-anime-genre-has-strong-growth-potential/.184215

Crunchyroll held a business seminar on Tuesday aimed at Japanese businesses. Part of the presentation centered on explaining current consumer trends in the west based on the service's viewership numbers. Chief Customer Officer Asa Suehira explained that while shonen battle anime and "isekai" fantasy series continue to dominate, anime aimed at a female audience have strong growth potential. He stated that these titles tend to over-perform due to unmet demand from low supply, citing Fruits Basket as an example.

"In the west, where female anime fans were underserved with relevant content historically, shojo, josei, and even some BL titles are showing stronger performances than expected," he said. Fans of idol anime shouldn't get their hopes up, however, as female-targeted idol anime were singled out as the exception to this trend.

We are probably going to get soon a tons of villainess/otome game isekais.
Oh good, I was about to ask Violet what their source was... well, idc for villainess and otome game isekai, but I still hope things change soon.

But here is where these percentage numbers come in. To prove that the amount of shoujo anime being made nowadays is the same amount of shoujo anime being made decades ago, the percentage of these anime being listed as shoujo should stay relatively consistent over time—in other words, these percentages should be around the same all throughout time.

No, he is saying the opposite. The claim is that 5 (or so) shoujo anime have been made every year over the past 40 years. New shoujo only go unnoticed because they are drowned out by hundreds of shounen.
Honestly I don't even know what his stance is anymore, all of his recent replies on this thread have been very confusing lol

Well, what do you personally think, Lucifrost? Do you agree or disagree?

I mean I don't really care who the demographic is, as long as it's good. It's pretty easy to find appealing shounen manga with the way the industry has grown over the past 20 years. When it comes to stuff made for girls, I find otome games have the most interesting stories these days.

No, FUCK SHOUJO. Iunno why the characters are drawn in the most unappealing ways possible, that's so cringe. I think that demographic as a whole for anime/manga should remain in the mud.

I think it's because yaoi stuff and mockup sport anime full of bishounens are more of a draw to female audiences, which lead to a gradual desertion of traditional shoujo minded works...

There's also a season of Aria in your favorites, of which the franchise started out as a shoujo manga... as well as KareKano...

Still wish death to your supposedly least favorite demographic?? lmaoooooo

Can't say I feel that way, no. I've yet to find a shoujo anime that I actually like. I always end up dropping the ones I try. Ore Monogatari looks and feels a lot like a shoujo even though it's technically not. I enjoyed that one.

*edit*
Oh apparently it is a shoujo after all. Yeah, I liked that one. It was really funny and cute, especially the first half. But then the second half happened which wasn't all that great.

I'm more sad at the amount of romcoms that are being adapted. Even Shounen Jump is overrun to the brim with them.
I seriously miss the days when sci-fi and mecha used to be king.

Yeah I checked the status right after I made my post. Pretty sure it lacked the shoujo tag last I looked. Or maybe I have it confused with Kobato, another show that looks like a shoujo but isn't for some reason. I would be happy if they made more shows like these.

That's one of the reasons. It's also missing almost everything I like about the anime. The last time I tried that with CLAMP, I got Magic Knight Rayearth 2. You can check my scores if you're curious.

My understanding is that otome isekai are to otome games what Sword Art Online is to JRPGs. The anime are their own genres that don't have much to do with video games, despite appearances. Actual otome games are more like Clannad, Steins;Gate, or Fate/Stay Night.

Yeah really don't get the hype with those. As for shoujo, the old code (i.e. animated dramas with a slight soapy bend) has been gone for a while. Pretty bad too considering almost all shoujo are mahou or fujobait/yaoibait.

What's wrong with mahou shoujo though? Magical girl series are often pretty and wholesome, personally can never get enough of it.

What are your thoughts on Magic Knight Rayearth by the way? With its oldschool-JRPG-look and awesome mechas, it seems like it'd be your kind of thing.

I would like to see some good old fashioned type of shoujo anime like The Twin Princesses of the Mysterious Star or Creamy Mami. The cute magic girl anime series were fun to watch at times like Cardcaptor Sakura.
Hell even Wedding Peach would have been fine.
I'm sure true shoujo is still out there and will make a comeback of sorts.

Rayearth is pretty darn good. Great Toshihiro Hirano direction that actually makes the CLAMP designs (noodle limb problem) palatable IMO.
Also nothing against mahou shoujo, just stating what's currently making money.

Yeah, it would be nice to see more shoujo anime. But I feel as though most shoujo manga made these days are just generic romance manga anyways. I personally feel that the genre used to have more variety before the 2010's. I was really excited for the Baraou no Souretsu anime being a fan of the manga back when it got announced, but the anime turned out to be kind of lackluster.

For what I can remember there haven't been many cool new shoujo anime in about 3-4 years, and as far as I can see most of the time the animation idustry opts for adaptations of older shoujo manga. The new Fruits Basket seemed kind of cool but I don't really like it though. Like I wish they would atleast adapt stuff that didn't already have an existing anime adaptation, looking at you Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew and The Rose of Versailles. The New Rose of Versailles anime project looks cool though. I remember liking Midnight Occult Civil Servants when it came out though.

The villainess anime being made nowadays pretty much seems like the female equivalent to generic jrpg isekai anyway. Athough I am kind of looking forward to Akuyaku Reijou nanode Last Boss wo Kattemimashita because I read the manga sometime ago.
