THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This is such a weird show from studio Lerche and one of its better in-house directors Masaomi Ando. And before you ask, go into this one blind because the synopsis makes little to no sense at all. Plus, this is yet another mecha-heavy show.

Knowing Akio Watanabe's original character designs, it's very striking. Makoto Uezu for scriptwriting, this man is based.

This is an alternate modern-day Japan being taken over by doctrines of past eras (one that hasn't experienced the current Reiwa Era (2019 and beyond), but invaded by the 20th Century Showa Era), filled with militarism, mechs and modern people who were all caught by surprise.

That is until we see from the eyes of playboy MC Kudo Hosomichi who pilots a mech in what looks like a VR setting to stop the infamy, and this gives me Gurren Lagann vibes (because the humanoid robots called "Garann" invade the land), only if held in the modern day context. Even one of its characters (Balzac Yamada, voiced by Tomokazu "Gintoki" Sugita) looks like he's inspired from Kamina just by the character design alone.

The mecha focus gets me thinking: these "battery girls"-powered Garanndoll weapons that look set to shape this original anime going forward, it's a lot of weirdness and fun for first impressions with all the sub-culture Otaku references that are similar to Choukadou Girl ⅙.

Definitely keeping an eye on this.

So this is like homage and parody to mecha anime at the same time. The robot is powered by how much anime cliche you can remember, specifically mecha anime cliche.

Yamada is like a combination of all GAR characters from mecha anime (Do people still use the word GAR in this decade?)

Our protagonist is quite handsome when he takes off his glasses. I'd definitely want to be his customer, providing that the club welcome all genders.

Fun episode

Looks like a solid mecha anime with good humor and a solid plot. Not crazy about the mecha designs but the comedic scenes they throw in during the episode makes it a fine balance between serious and humorous.

Cliche... Cleverly cliche. Using these subculture cliches in creative way, like wtf. It's quite hard to explain the idea of anime without self-referencing. "Will we consider this anime as cliche? if the premise of the anime is like using cliches to power up this battery girls and to fight villains which is cliche itself as the clicheness of the anime itself is what creates the premise to use it in the story?" Yeah i also don't understand.

Kinda disappointing, I thought it would be like Gakkougurashi taking a post-apocalyptic setting and then having a plot twist/surprise in first episode.

It's like a mainstream mecha shounen anime, with all the characters that should be fine (inside the robots),
for character designs/art are cute & colorful, first impression is action-comedy.

By the way those mechs and many of the other elements give me strong Samurai Pizza Cats (aka Kyattou Ninden Teyandee) vibes.

Hosomichi works as a host so he has to remove his glasses at work. Life is painful.. and he has hints of being an ex or closeted Otaku for he uses some Showa-era sounding Toku/Anime sound track as his ringtone, an absolute no-no in Shinkoku Nippon.

The shark from the fishtank was foreshadowing Hosomichi's encounter with Rin Akagi (my god, Ai Fairouz's voice is great, can't wait to hear more of her as Jolyne).

I think Shinkoku Nippon's dog-shaped mecha is parodying both the children's anime Yatterman (the large dog head design) and the Kerberos Panzer Cops armor from Jin-Roh (being oppressive cops, which also had a wolf motif)

Hosomichi performs the rite of passage of entering an mecha with an empty cockpit (which Rin catches on to), and already with the VR visor and game controller, it is the embodiment of what the rebels represent.

The OS avatar is a total otaku and recharges the mecha upon hearing anime BGMs, she is goddam adorable (and she won't eat your memories like some OS avatars...). The rebel organization's name is an anagram for the Akihabara and is led by this Kamina-looking fellow, brilliant.

SHARK CAVALIER!

Shark One blatantly uses the power of imagination and it's absolutely shameless. This show embraces the power of Otakus and their dreams. I am reminded of Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger (a otakus being an "unofficial" sentai team) and Samurai Flamenco (pretty boy model Masayoshi is an otaku like Hosomichi is a host, and his delusions of being a superhero become real).

The next morning, with the host club ruined, Hosomichi and his boss get the idea to sell the robot. Angered, Rin Akagi reveals herself as not a mere OS avatar, but a "Battery Girl", coming out out of the cylindrical battery-shaped protrusion on the back of the robot.

A mecha with a cute mascot actually works for a series that doesn't take itself too seriously like this... idgaf that the mecha are 3DCG and super deformed, it is fun to watch (Gurren was like that kinda and it's cool af)

Apparently Fall is the season for Mecha anime and Office Girl anime, not to be confused with Mecha Office Girl anime.

I'm definitely getting a lot of Gurren Lagann/Kill la Kill vibes from this.

If Sakugan has Gurren Lagann's emotional themes, then this show certainly has TTGL's over-the-top humor.

Ok, now that's a genuinely interesting angle to go at this from. Using anime tropes as a literal power system in a society split between engrossing themselves in fantasy or reality is a very, very promising stage for a meta-narrative exploring the nature fiction has on society, or the importance of subculture. There's so many ways this could be taken, and all are intriguing.

Brilliant on the art and direction, too. Nice use of switching effects on impacts between the Mecha, the base artstyle has an appealing mix of bright colours and deep shading, and strong visual and audio choreography on the final battle. Designs, also pretty good, each with distinct traits and postures, with evident understanding of shape theory.

It's clearly got talent, drive and meaning, and that's the trifecta. One-of-if-not-the strongest offers this season.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

Ayy, another mecha, eh? Surprisingly a very fun start so far. The list of the va actually pretty good too. This season definitely filled something almost new to my seasonal watch experience. Denchi Shoujo? Weird, but she's cute af. What an embarassing way to end the enemy's robot. Mc so far be funny. The comedy punch and conversation so far interesting me. Though, his past might be not so good. But, as long as you've got that waifu robot, your life can be more great than before. Lets hype her more, dude!

Anyway, that loan shark dude casually still care about finding a way to extracting the debt from a poor mc, and then the mc just casually giving an idea about to sell the waifu robot. Such an enlighten mood part there. 'You are the worst!' Kekw, can't aggree more, girl. Can't wait to see whats happening next. So, yeah, one more shit added to my barren list.

I knew it was making it fun of chunibyou-otaku stuff, but in a good feeling way.

What if I told you that sometimes a very weird premise/concept can have proper execution by making fun of its themes but in a good feeling way? This series is one of them for the overall production exceeds my expectations.

Well I try not to be excited especially when it involves anime-original series, but somehow this series has got great voice acting performances, colorful & smooth visuals, and most important, what would hapo if your nostalgia of tokusatsu/anime/video game & whatever otaku stuff you can think of just "disappeared but never gone at all"...

Such premise sounds weird on paper, but on-screen, it surprised me in the most feel-good way I've ever felt this year. Hence, expectw me to write a comment in the next episodes' discussions! Till then, Shark Cavalier!! 🦈👋🏼

Not one for subtlety I see. There is practically 0 depth. That isn’t the end of the world if the presentation is outstanding, but that is lackluster too. Visually it looks ugly. I like the color pallete when they are in the VR mech. Unfortunately the rest is just passable or ugly. The music is not good and the sound design is even worse.

Pretty much a dollar store Gurren Lagann made 14 years later. Maybe that is still enough to get me past 3 episodes, although I doubt it.

Similar to Rolling Girls in the sense that it's a quintessentially Japanese love letter to a certain subset of anime culture.

Like without that it's a cheap looking throwaway mecha but with the cultural commentary it becomes slightly profound.

Usually I'm not really a fan of the whole "power of hopes and dreams!" kinda trope, but I've never seen it mixed with a mecha anime before. Could be interesting. Also that guy with the blue and yellow hair looks like the personification of Sharpedo lmao

Other than that, I was kinda shocked by the setting. Before watching anime I never really read the synopsis, and based off of the cover this looked like it would've been some sort of bright cheerful comedy mecha anime lmao
Either way not complaining, definitely enjoyed this first episode

I finally found a hidden gem hehehe

The MC has a nice personality and has a good CV but at this time, his character needs to "grow up" or "experience various things" instead of cooping himself in that "host club". Now he must or shall he defeat the enemies plaguing their home (Akihabara?), since the plot seem to criticize and despise the otaku industry in this era, there are those willing to take risk, a mysterious organization (probably full of otaku's) and the character that tried to call our MC has a Chuunibyou factor. Hmm, I will be expecting more if this!

I'm still thinking why there's only one machine in that place... 🤔😏

BUT!!! The OS character earlier was cute (chibi form) and her character is really interesting to watch, her lines are too cute to bear! 🤣🤣🤣 and her VA reminds me someone from an idol series. She has a nice character and I will tune in how the two of their relationship develop whether friends or that. I didn't expect to see a real girl at the back of the machine, to think there's also a cockpit in there... 😅
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.
