I feel like this show is getting so much hate and here I am, I enjoyed this anime so much more despite one very weak episode (monkeys playing... baseball or whatever that was again), and another meh episode (the one with the plague). I also really like the ending because of how realistic it is, I'm sad that they just let Nozomi pass away that easily and Rajdhani for deciding to stay (with the animals) in the "old" world. Would have hoped for one more episode after that ending to showcase more what happens afterwards, but despite that, the anime was nice overall, not that great sadly because a lot of characters didn't get expanded enough upon but for an anime with this length the anime certainly accomplished a lot

Good show overall, although my enjoyment decreased after the students left the island and went separate ways. this was the point the pacing started to go off and the show kind of lost me. there was still some nice episodes after this though.

The background art is one of the main reasons I liked Sonny Boy. modern TV anime are usually reliant on ugly CG looking art for the surroundings and backgrounds so this was a nice surprise. I really love the backgrounds art style they use here.

Steal 30 plot elements from a bunch of mediocre to above average shows, combine it with surrealism, multiverses and timeloops and you get this mediocre anime, though I liked this show character wise I despise it plot wise, the only way of taking this seriously is by try harding to interpret everything at the edge of surrealism and yet isn't exactly good if you do that. The ending was actually nice and they avoided all the melodrama I was expecting a show like this would had, that was a nice feature. The messages of the shows aren't nothing new, the way they tried to convey was but that doesn't make it special, anyways I liked the ending and that made me raise the score by 1 point, eventually if I feel that I got anything from this after some time has passed, I may raise the score again by 1 point, at the moment it gets a well deserved 4/10.

I understood a tiny fraction of the content but I think I grasp the central message.
Half of the enjoyment was in asking questions itself, sometimes that's enough I guess. The other half was in the production.

Though on the supporting characters it's not me not understanding the content but the writers literally conveying nothing.
I appreciate the MCs' journey but too many of the souls in the show just fizzled out into naught.
Maybe that was the point but too much uncertainty incites empty emotional reaction.

Really on the bitter side of bittersweet, but there are still positives to be taken away. Nozomi nurtured Nagara until he was able to "fly" on his own and he's able to appreciate that while understanding that he very well may be unable to connect to Nozomi in this world. Still, I hope that he would try to hold up to his promise, since it definitely did happen in that. And their lives are just beginning.

The "unplugged" version of the song was really fitting way to close the story.

A rather trippy coming of age story. There are a lot of unanswered questions but that in itself is also a lesson about life.

Not really my jam. Too "arthouse". Too scattershot. Precious little to hold on to. Some parts were cool. I felt the tinge of melancholy at the very end.

It's a good anime. I liked the story and presentation, even though the show is pretentious at times. Nagara finally decided his "world"... And so did Rajhdani in his own way. Nozomi now followed her own path. Ngl I miss Aki sensei acting all bossy xD

Mizuho is my favourite character here. Nice story of hers. This is a slightly overrated anime, but a head scratching and interesting one. 7/10

Too meaningless. Flat characters. Mundane plotlines. Plot holes galore. Absurd character logic. Absurd storylines. Lame ending. Unnecessarily overcomplicated. Heavily reliant on ambiguity to disguise lack of substance. Style over substance. Eye-catching visuals undermined by incoherent narrative. Pretension masking lack of depth. Promising concept squandered by shallow execution. Heavy-handed symbolism that fails to resonate. Purposefully obscure in a vain attempt at profundity. Style devoid of meaningful content. Raises more questions than it answers in the most frustrating of ways. Annoyingly cryptic. Ultimately forgettable despite intriguing premise.

i adore a lot of dreamlike anime so i went into Sonny Boy expecting to at least have a decent time and i was so let down. too many ideas with no room to explore them, too much tedious dialogue that goes nowhere. all the fun abstract visuals and surreal events feel like they're just arbitrary set dressing for a basic tired coming of age story of how growing up sucks and we can't do anything about it.

it's a huge incompetent mess but it looks like they had fun making it

It was an amazing journey. I went into this show with pretty low expectations seeing the critiques and knowing that it was a coming-of-age anime, but it turned out to be really good.
I really loved the mind bending theme encouraging us to ponder on complex ideas, and the fact that it isn't afraid to leave some aspects of its narrative open to interpretation, allowing the us to piece together parts of the puzzle ourselves.
Also, the anime's soundtrack was a banger. It added an extra layer of depth to the emotional moments.

- and after all, the shitty boi, the shinji of this series, could not acomplish his ONLY promisse to Noizomi: to come to her and ask to be friends.

At least for a pretentious show, this one was way better than Wonder Egg Priority.

Rewatched this on Sep 28, 2023. I'll admit, Asakaze is the worst yet I CAN'T HATE HIM; to some extent if he didn’t go through all that shit I would've respected him more; "This asakaze" is possibly kinder; "This asakaze" can be a good friend; this asakaze this asakaze this asakaze AAAHH EVERYONE IS A VICTIM OF A BUNCH OF SHIT THAT THE DRIFT WORLD DID TO THEM. Also the ending just reminded me of Serial Experiment where everything is a new timelime and I know, it's hard to accept the reality behind one's trajectory.

Sublime series, the kind of production that revitalizes a jaded anime watcher's love for the medium. I think I would have preferred it to have ended with episode 11, as the last episode came close to stepping over the line into triteness, but overall the passion and heartfelt artistry with which the show's sentiments were expressed was soul-stirring.

So, in an interview, Shingo Natsume mentioned that he and his team are preparing to add a lot of extra material to the blu-ray version, including a sketch of the scene in the cafe where Nozomi was sitting with her friends, which also features modern Cap, Pony and Rajdhani in the background. I haven't found this sketch anywhere sadly, has somebody seen it?

By the way, do we know the grumpy man Nagara bumped into in the crowd on the street? I thought that might be the War-guy, especially since we don’t know what year he was drawn into the drift from and his real world version could already have matured a lot. Though Nagara seemed to recognize him, but he had never seen War in the drift, so I'm not sure.

i read a review that described this anime as "being about nothing" and i agree, there is a lot that happends that doesnt get explained, why did they went adrift in the first place? what the fuck was the whole thing about their principal being god? the voice that hoshi heard? why did he heard it? how come they just decided to go back and were enable to do it? what was the point of ms. aki being introduced? the fact that she was actually a student? why did she instigate the anger of the students against nagara? if she had a goal what was it? she could have been cut off from the plot and nothing would have change, the same could be said about the sou seiji episode, in fact, most of the episodes that came after most of the students left hateno island could have been cut off and the final outcome would have change little if nothing, again, this anime throws so much shit only do nothing with it, cryptic vague comments to appear cool, mysterious of profound that ended in nothing, if this thing even had a message? a theme, what was it? was it a metaphor for the the fear, anxiety and feeling of being aimless that comes with the transition from childhood to adulthood? it was about the dangers of escapism? it was about how living a fullfilling live is only possible if you follow your heart?, i ended this and i felt like i just wasted my time, i give a 5 out of 10

I thought anime-originals with this type of atmosphere were goners, Madhouse said hell no. This isn't near Texhnolyze or Lain's level, the plot is essentially about growing up and learning how to accept changes, but it's a very unique attempt.

It was pure pain seeing Nozomi who ended together w that douchebag, still ironic cause Nozomi disliked him just a few eps ago. The MC was pathetic as shit and there were so many time-wasting moments that felt like filler. Incredible work by Madhouse as much as I wasn't impacted by the story

It's been a while since I've seen such a good anime. I really enjoyed it while watching, even though I didn't understand much. Watanabe did a great job!! All the anime I've seen from him are great (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Sonny Boy).

Unlike some, I didn't find the ending sad. In a way, Nagara moved on, even though it seems like he hasn't improved in social relationships, but he accepted the world as it is and seems to be making an effort to live from now on, unlike before the drift.

The Nozomi they knew died, but part of her still exists. I hope Nagara keeps his promise and becomes friends with her again, even though she's someone else now.

Probably the weirdest anime I've ever seen. It's good that the story is forgettable, precisely because of the subjectivity it has, so each re-watch will bring a good experience.

Hah so what was this about again? Life? Ones experience? Outlook on life? Reality? Transition from middle school to highschool or from child to adult!? Future!? Whatever.. It seemed it was about many things but is also about nothing..
This show proves that having lot of symbolism and complex storyline doesnt always make it good.. It was just boring mess.. It was stylish and were some answers I wanted to know & kept me watching that we didnt get either, but thats it tbh.. WASTE OF TIME

can anyone explain what happened to the rest of the students ?
and I mean in the real world, when Mizuho & Nagara returned to it

how come in the real world we see Nozomi (died in This World) , but then we also see Asakaze (he stayed in This World ???), but Rajdhani we don't see him at all (turned to forest in This World = same as died ??? ) and where are the rest of the many other students that have been in This World, why we don't see them?

It's certainly the biggest mindfuсk of a show I've ever watched.
Devilman Crybaby meets Studio Ghibili meets Evangelion meets a coming-of-age story meets quantum physics

I did enjoy it though, such shows are a rarity these days, in the age of garbage isekais and cookie-cutter shonens.

The character interactions and the characters themselves were outstanding in this anime, and borderline perfect, however the storys progression however was a big discombobulated. I understand what it's conveying, but I feel like it's just rushing along and force feeding these themes without allowing for natural fluidity to set in-between. If it had 24 episodes it could have had time to breathe and could have explored more into the dynamics of the characters. Like for instance Hoshi ( the feminine student council dude ) was a big missed opportunity as he was introduced as a potential antagonist from the 1st episode, and got glimpses off his uncertainty of motives throughout the next 3 to 4ish episodes. Hell if I recall correctly, wasn't he the first person that talked to God, I feel like that story point was just mentioned and never was explored again. There was also showcases of interesting symbolism that wasn't never fully discovered and was just hurried along, because the anime being 12 episodes. I'm pointing these flaws out because I genuinely feel that if it was addressed accordingly, this could have been an easy 9/10 anime, hell MAYBE even a 10/10. Despite my criticisms Sonny Boy despite it's short length managed to introduce a extremely unique isekai premise that is filled with complex and realistic people and realistic ambitions. The mellowness of this anime never felt boring or dull as it was accompanied by believable and strong showcases of expression. This was done by the stellar job of the animators, the Voice actors, and the script of what was said. sousou no frieren needs to take notes from how to display a chill state of being while also not having it being extremely robotic and awkward.

Also as a side note, this was my 1,000 anime completed, and while I do have my grievances with it, I'm genuinely glad this anime has been set as a legendary benchmark. This is pure copium, but I would love a movie or even a 3 episodes OVA, that ties up the loose ends with Nagara and how he can reach a more decisive ending rather than being open ended like we saw now. Sonny boy gets a 8/10 from me, what a ride !

loved the anime, but i felt like they only scrapped the surface with some characters and worlds? like the stuff with god and the teacher, i would have liked to see more explanation or exploration about them. also, a glimpse about the other students would have been nice, since i thought hoshi would have more screen time with the main characters (but i think we get to know what happened to him and the students thanks to rajdhanni lmao?) also, the stuff about war? we got war introduced but he was killed off-screen? hmn.
pretty good anime, i loved the characters, tbh. the relationships that developed throughout the anime were nice, rajdhani 100% all the way. the soundtrack, although not very present, was amazing, the animation sometimes meh but i see that was the 'vibe' of the style, which i totally liked. the ending was lackluster and bittersweet, but that is the real world for you. go back to the real world and face the reality, now that you have changed?
loved the animation when they are leaving for the real world.
such a good journey.
8/10.
