My dear goddess Ymir please erase my memories of all parts of AOT manga I have read...I want to enjoy the anime fresh.... na..nana...na...na... na....nana...na..na...nanana..na...na..... yeagerrrrrrr
If there was no one else within a 5-kilometer radius from Shimamura, and she was in a deep sleep and an all-knowing deity just happened to reassure me that she wasn’t going to wake up the next 24 hours, maybe I’d get bored after 23 hours and I might kiss her once to relieve some boredom...

So, nazi guys are up to kidnap Eren once again. Sounds like an old joke.
That Reiner's speech about islanders, it literally described AoT's characters and their "deep" development through the three previous seasons lol.

Thoughts after the rewatch.

The cinematography on display is only match by Araki in S1, the angles and camera movements they used are great, the dinner scene was the highlight for me.

Some parts of the animation need more work like the Udo scene in the pier, but otherwise I was not expecting such a good animation quality, I was really thinking they were gonna do what Wit did on S1 in Ep3 which was the first dialogue only episode of the season, and you can tell they treated it with less care than the action ones, which makes sense, you need to prioritize action

I hope this means the production will be more consistent, for this final season, and not that the season is very front loaded, I doubt the latter because we have info from animators that later eps will get special treatment as they should, But I hope there is not that one odd episode who will get shafted down the line.

As for adaptation, Seko does not disappoints, he kept and trimmed what was necessary, lets hope he can keep this pace for all 16 eps since he doesn't have much room to breath.

it's getting more and more interesting. all of the eldia's beliefs are a result of brainwashing. i kind of have a feeling that gabi won't be the one who will inherit the shielded titan.

To be completely honest, from the near end of season 3 part 2 AOT is really hitting the mark as far dialogues, character development, plot progression, and mostly managing exposition.

Its both parts Of the Manga Author getting better and better and also having the scriptwriter being someone who has worked on the series from the beginning and also even written novels taking place in the universe.

This show has become so good. The story-telling has definetly evolved and this is not only due to the improvements in the manga, but also the studio being able to follow it up perfectly. The way language is used and the way the dialogues are done is much more believable than in previous seasons - big thumbs up to all the old and new voice actors.

Now I hope the action scenes to come are also as monumental and memorable. The first episode has me set up to believe: Yes. It will be just as memorable as season 1, 7 years ago.

The way the new characters are being filled with life is also amazing. In the manga I never really came to like them but this such a nice crew and Pieck is best girl.

btw RIP Ymir. It was just a stillshot but still so sad...

Interesting animation moments in this episode during conversations between characters.

Also it's really interesting to hear Reiner's point of view in the time he spent with Eren & co. It really made me realise how far the series has come and also it explained a lot when I go back and watch some scenes.

I can tell they're making us like these characters so they can get massacred soon lol I think Eren is in town, when the guy was adjusting the emotionally scarred war veteran's band

Well, I definitely need to watch this a second time, mainly because of seeing it with a very questionable sub, but I'm sure it'll help to clear some things.
Pretty heavy infomative episode.

This one was a very character driven one, specially with Reiner's segments, but it also is visble with the presentation of the other warriors, I'm liking them all. It was interesting to see Zeke proposing to retake Paradis again, his arguments make sense but it seems that it comes more from a personal desire to revert their mistakes, also, he's got less than a year left due to Ymir's curse, the pressure over him must be enormous; I wonder if Marley's militar cupule it's gonna let him follow his plan or ther're gonna deny it. Gabi and Falco have some more focus in this episode as well, and it's becoming clear that they're two different sides of the coin, one absoulety sure of her actions, ultra confidence, cold-blooded and a bit brat-alike, and the other way more reasonable, unsure of his actions and the motives behind them and kind-hearted with some shades of mercy; it's gonna be really interesting to see how this contrast is gonna be developed. And now, more into the core of this episode, Reiner clearly shows some psychological wounds from his 5 years mission in Paradis, it's weird and definitely must be explore with more attention and deepness, but it seems like a mixture of negation, hatred and fear, though in all honesty, I couldn't stop laughing when he was telling Sasha's potato incident; it's good next week we're gonna get a flashback of him where hopefully we might get to understand this better, how he was in the inside back then and how he's in the inside actually.

In the technical aspect, direction was fine, pretty well, but I feel it got a bit weird, maybe it came more from the animation, but it felt like at times it was desperate to not stay quiet, and it seemed strange, stillness can be very elegant when used adequately, it seemed they forgot about it in some parts of this episode. And talking about the animation, it had this really weird feeling to it, it's by no means bad, but it seems a bit clanky to be good, there's clearly an effort to show naturalness with movement, but it didn't turn out pretty well; only when I entered the forum I got to understand that it was because of the rotoscoping, which shows the efforts behind this but still can't hide its mistakes, maybe there was a lack of interbetweening, which is rare as the idea with rotoscoping is to create fluidness, it's a good idea but I hope it can be used better in coming episodes; also, though it still had a resemblance with the previous seasons, this time the character designs felt a moore different, nothin big but defnitely there was a change. And finally the music, whille I think it's pretty good, I don't get a connection with all of the previous job, like it doesn't fit the sound that is already stablished, like it doesn't belong to the same story, there was that little guitar piece when Reiner and the kids were at the coast that was great but it didn't click with the air that music generally puts us on; I get it may be nitpicking and that was something obviously with the change of main composer, but with Kohta being Sawano's apprentice (am I right?) I'd hope for him to keep the familiarity in the sound while bringing something new; we'll have to see what else he's gonna show us in future episodes.

Last but not least, Historia Reiss exists, but if that wasn't the case, Pieck would be best girl. Ok, I'm exaggerating a bit, there's only one episode out, but I really liked Ms. Cart Titan, I'm expectant to see more of her.

Edit: Almost forgot it, RIP Ymir and Eren spotted, things are gonna get heated soon for sure.
Edit 2: Disclaimer: When I say stillness, I refer to the "camera" staying quiet while the characters are moving, not some still images with little to no animation as it's common in the anime industry.

voice acting in these are on point.

btw which anime will take place of attack on titan? I think The promise Neverland will be the best and suitable anime to take the place of aot.

Getting worse... Choppiest animation ever. Also they cut out Creepy Pieck scene. :( Only Reiner and Porko looks decent, sometimes Falco and Pieck. Any hope for the part 2 will be better animated?

I felt so bad for the Eldians on Marley's side after this episode. After the rewatch, the episode and the soundtrack hit even harder. How does AoT do this consistently? Episodes simply don't get old. Each episode gets better the more I watch it.

It's called rotoscopy. Aku no Hana and kizumonogatari are bad and good examples of this animation method. I think that in snk it's pretty messy, the framerate is obviously a problem.

Yeah, I see. Hopefully they will fix that for the BD's

I don't know why, but I couldn't help but smile when Reiner was talking about Sasha's potato addiction as something so "horrifying" to his family. XD

I did enjoy the world building that this episode had to offer. As for the visuals, I think MAPPA has gone a really good job so far and the same goes for most of the scenes where the characters are moving and talking with fluid animation. Having said that, there was a few scenes where that fluidity felt too choppy, which is something I hope they can fix for the Blu-Ray release soon.

It was only a still shot, but RIP Ymir, though. =(

So, Is AOT going to be the next GOT...rhyme intended...

I loved everything about the story. BUT the crapy animation, laggy movements of zeke and udo. Everything made me feel like, This is NOT the AOT I wanted.

I read some pages from the manga and was quite sure that dialogues have been cut. Scenes have been rushed.

The setting, the feel of the timeline, I have no problem with that. But why do I feel like that I'm seeing some third grade animation.

This felt like a really important episode even though not a lot happened; it showed that the Marleyans are still hostile towards the Eldians despite everything they've done for their country, how desperate the Eldians are to believe all the propaganda bullshit Marley has fed them in order to have hope and it also revealed what happened to Ymir... my heart just broke.

Also, am i right in thinking that the guy with the long hair with the PTSD soldiers Falco spoke to is Eren?

Right, but if she hadn't gone with the Titan duo, none of that would be different, and she'd get to spend her last few years with the girl she loves, instead of dying to help some brainwashed fools.

If I had to guess, Ymir knew how the Eldians from Marley felt after her experience as the cult's goddess. She knew that Reiner and Bert are not actually bad people and she felt bad for eating Marcel since she was the only one who understands how they feel ("I am returning what I borrowed back then" is what she said). After all, Ymir died with no regrets, other than the fact that she couldn't marry Historia, which couldn't have been possible either way. I don't think Ymir hates Marley for what happened, she accepted that the world they live in is fucked.
I agree that Ymir's reasoning is weird, but she was for sure an interesting character, she didn't defend either side and she only did what she wanted to.
She was also aware of the bad consequence waiting for Reiner and Bertholdt at home if they were to go back from their 5-year mission empty handed.

Yeah, despite her claim of being a selfish person with her borrowed lifespan from Marcel, she still ended up living and dying for others she cared about until the end.
I just realized that all of my favorite characters, beside being stunningly beautiful, also happen to be exceptionally skilled murder machines. \('-')/

I just dont get you ppl. All you talk about is the animation.
In my opinion majority has already read the manga so they dont worry about the plot at all, focus on animation and enjoy seeing scenes about what they already know.
BUT
I havent read manga, I dont know whats gonna happen and I just dont care about animation at all. I feel like watching the beggining of some new anime, but most of the secrets were already explored so there is no need for it. We were in the middle of the super action plot, everything was moving and now its all dead.

In the S1E1 we were thrown in the middle of bloodlusty titans, now we are watching ppl chatting around table. What are they even talking about? We know the enviroment from previous episode and if they are going to do something in the future we will see it so whats the point.

I feel like they just milk cow while they forgot this is not a cow, its a horse which is much better at running, not at giving milk.

Yeah as a manga reader i can 100% concentrate on the animation. Maybe listen and you will understand the plot. If they not cut off important scenes. Yeah, i understand Pieck's scene wasn't that important, but it's part of her personality, and she don't has that much screen time anyway...

So I thought the first episode had poor structure and the good parts were when we spent time with the characters BUT DAMN. This second episode was structured really nicely and introduced us the the world of Marley really well. It humanised our supposed villains by showing us their family life. I thought the way the show looked, looked a lot better than the first episode as there was less of the weird blur effect. I thought the scene with the PTSD suffering Eldians was really good. I hate to say how much I laughed at the BOOM. But really my only complaints are tiny tiny details but for the most part a very good episode. Makes me have hope MAPPA will be able to pull through. Side note: the suicide scene was done really really well and some of the “camera” techniques are really nice and dynamic.

Wow this is a dialogue heavy episode, so much information and no action but 100% entertaining, this shows competence of Isayama sensei writing skills. I see some rotoscope scenes throughout the episode, MAPPA is flexing so hard now they're unstoppable. Looks like Reiner is conflicted inside and might eventually betray Marley and join the others. Can't wait for the next episode.

Rotoscope not cg, that's definitely hand drawn, people can't even tell between cgi and hand drawn. Its because its rotoscope why the movement looked like that in some scenes.

Really a good episode...

This episode was more of the introduction of the characters in Marley.
And they also made an important decision of trying to capture the founding titan once again!!

by watching the preview of next episode, it will be about the past of Reiner.
