Strange how MAL directly contradicts that and says ‘67. Are you perhaps watching some other series?

MAL is wrong, Keiichi and Rena is 14, Mion is 15
they're in middle school,

1) I’m taking MAL’s word on this.
2) I interpreted that other event as college.

The ages were definitely changed for the live action adaptations. Dont know where MAL, being MAL, got it's info.

look at the dates in this episode.

Mion is listed at 16-17 in one of the game ports as well.
Their ages are never consistent through ports and what not.
Only thing we know is they all are young, and Keiichi is good amount of years older than Satoko/Rika.
This sounds like a reasonable answer about their ages.

He is right you know.

MAL is the pinnacle of factual info.

Like how Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya Movie: Oath Under Snow is listed as a sequel to the 3rd series(4th season) but also a prequel of the first series(1st season),with users/fans being systematically warned by mods for asking a change, or how this series is listed as an "alternative version".

You guys....

Their age doesn't really matter because the author himself doesn't really care beyond them being young. I mean going by wiki dates, Rena would be only 1-2 years older than Satoko when she looks at least good 5-6 years older than her.

Mion/Shion are literal bombshells who looks almost 18-19 but the story wants to tell you they are still in middle school. I won't say that such a thing is impossible in RL, but it would be better if we don't think too much about their ages for our own sake.

For newbies to the series:
Pay attention to the dates shown in episode 5 compared to the first four episodes. Also, refer back to Rika's conversation with Hanyuu at the start of episode 2 that can give you more context to understand what's going on organically. If you're still a bit lost, simply put

If you're wondering about what all the discussion is about like re the doll, and Mion vs Shion etc, I'd recommend watching the original 2006 series of Higurashi, followed by the sequel Higurashi Kai, in order to fully understand the significance of certain aspects of Higurashi Gou. I won't spoil anything except that Gou is playing on familiar viewers' expectation of how we think things will go down. Hence the "deceiving" arcs.

You don't need to watch Higurashi Rei/Kira/Outbreak, or Umineko to understand anything else - just Higurashi (2006) and Higurashi Kai will be enough.

Now back to some scheduled discussion

Pretty sure it's Mion throughout this episode (because of what Rika and Rena told K1, no doubt she's trying to open up and show her girly side) though I'm thinking it is Shion at the very end

In terms of the structure of the episode I have some criticism: Episode 5 felt like a collection of scenes with really week transitions stitching them together. Some parts of Onidamashi felt this way too, but it was super noticeable here. I understand that at the start of each arc you have to lay the groundwork, but if I'm honest I think that if I was a first-time viewer with Higurashi i would have given up after this episode. Are they trying to squeeze stuff in to work towards more new content at the end? It feels too reliant on viewers having some familiarity with the series. I'm speaking as someone who hasn't watched the original anime in like. A decade lol. I have some nostalgia for the overally series but I'm not such a hige fand that I'm able to compare every little detail. I'd have to watch the episodes side-by-side with full context to decide which I liked better. Honestly it would depend on the tone they're trying to set.

The animation is way better overall than Studio Deens tho - Passione is (sigh) working well with the moe fanservice content (no surprise there, because ecchi ¬¬) but they'll have to up the creepiness and horror if I'm going to be entertained. There's only so much I can keep my interest purely because I want to know what happens in the end. I'll keep watching for now because I am curious how these arcs will play on our expectations but honestly there's going to have to be some big changs in order to keep things fresh.

Idk how the age talk started, it's pointless now, but here's from the VN very first tips:

Rena is one year younger because her birthday hasn't arrived yet. Keiichi and Mion have the same age, but Mion's birthday didn't arrive yet, So she's in a higher grade. It's not clear their age, though, at least not in this part. It doesn't matter much to me, they're teenagers, while Satoko and Rika are children yet. Their age isn't such a big deal after all.

Not much happened this episode but I love it aniway because a lot of things that were said or done forshadowed stuff, for example the way they forshadowed reina's dark side was incredible and I also liked how at the end of the episode this crowd showed up because I am 100% sure that this is something huge. They don't drop the slice of life act for a single second and yet they still bring more mysteries to the anime.

You would understand what's going on if you watched the OG. But, to avoid spoiling too much, basically, the characters are in a sort of "time loop."

So, Keiichi did die, and Rena did die, but now we're back at the start of the time loop.

Okay, so now were getting into the Gou version of the first half of my favorite arc in the original Higurashi. How will our expectations be subverted this time?

Now, some people are suggesting that we were'nt actually seeing Shion at all until the end. However, I wonder if even that was Shion. Personally, I'm vaguely wondering if,

Bruh, Higurashi predates Re:Zero by years. If anything, the concept of Return By Death was inspired by Higurashi.

Also, if we really want to go there,

Watching og would be definitely better for understanding and will improve your experience with this show, I recommend it. But it's not like without it, you won't understand, I'm watching a certain reactor on YT who understands most of it watching first time, for example. If you have a lot of time, consider also reading VN.

Coz this is reboot with major differences during said arcs that leading to (sorta) unpredictable conclusions, that's why it's more a sequel...but not quite @_@

Even experienced fans are trying to see where they go with it, but there's a strong suspicion we'll see a pretty big plot bomb at some point.

But the first arc was pretty significantly different from the OG first arc. So it's worth it to go back and watch the original. I actually just went back to rewatch it so I remembered all the plot details since it's been a little.

This isn't just a remake of the arcs of the original. This is definitively a sequel to the original.

And the arcs are already quite different. We're only less than a quarter of the way in and even people who have watched the original anime like me don't know what's going to happen next.

You should really watch the original. I know that it's an anime from the 2000s and has somewhat janky animation, but it's really amazing.

I mean, you don't technically have to watch the original anime to understand what's going on here, but it would make it easier for you to get the plot of this. And, the original anime is extremely good.

Ok, so this episode was a rezero moment? They definitely went back in time, it's more than obvious i guess. The thing is, this whole episode was the most chill ever! But that ending, oh boy! It seemed like she was controlling everyone or kinda invoked a curse?

Mion for sure is pretty cute, the whole twin sister thing xD Only Keiichi to fall for that lmao

But still, i do hope that they will explain some moreeeee, i need answeeeeeeers.

Btw i wonder if this season will be adapted like few episodes per arc of each character? Where Keiichi will try to save/help everyone?

Can't wait for more!

This episode is pretty similar to one of the episodes from the original series. Besides the comedy scenes with Keichii playing the game with the boys and the ending, not much was different. I sincerely hope this arc ends up being more compelling that the first. The prevalent narrative shortcomings and incredibly lackluster climax of Onidamashi-hen leaves the window right open for a massive improvement by contrast alone. Glad to see the animation quality steadily improving, if only ever-so slightly. Hopefully the sole reason the first several episodes appeared so cheap/rushed was due purely to COVID-19's impact on the animation staff.

I really want my mind to be blown away with this arc. But I'd also be perfectly fine with just a "good" story overall after the abysmal first 4 episodes dropped the ball so heavily. Don't disappoint me again, Ryukishi/Passione! >.<
