Many people wonder if how they use the scoring system well, or if they score too high. First, I'd just like to say that it doesn't really matter how you use the scores, everyone scores differently, and there's nothing wrong with that, but if you'd like to start thinking about your scores more, that is why I made this. Many of the grading systems, at least in the USA, I don't know about elsewhere, a 5 is bad while a 7 is average. Whereas on MAL a 5 is average and a 7 is good, for the ones wanting to change the way that they score, we need to remember this. Don't be afraid to give a anime a 6 or a 7, those aren't bad scores, an 8 and above should be series or movies that you absolutely love, and have less issues with. My rating score: 10: Masterpiece. While it might have some problems, those are so minor that they are hardly worth the mention. 9: Great/Fantastic: Great piece of anime that might have some problems or personal nitpicks that I can't ignore but still love it. 8: Very Good: Enjoyed the anime, had some more problems with it. But left me feeling satisfied in some way. 7: Good: Good, could have been better. Had some flaws; either personal issues with it or other flaws. 6: Fine: A nice little anime, enjoyed it but just didn't love it as much as I could. 5: Average: Had a lot of problems that I just couldn't ignore. But some stuff I did enjoy. Kind of meh. 4: Bad: Maybe a couple of characters I enjoyed, or some sort of character development or music or whatever I enjoyed, but the rest I didn't. 3: Very Bad: Got annoyed multiple times with the character(s) or certain scenes in the anime. 2: Horrible: Disappointed in the way that the characters, character development and/or the story happened. Might enjoy one or two things, but overall was severely disappointed. 1: Appalling: Ugh just awful. Where's the bleach? Normally for me, I drop the 4 or below, I don't feel the urge or desire to finish a 4 or below series, but some people want or need to finish a 4 or below score, and that's fine too. Think of an 8 that you have: Do you feel the same exact way as another 8 that you have? Do you enjoy it as much? If you feel like it's not quite, perhaps rate it a 7, if you don't feel it quite deserves an 8 anymore. I also am a fan of the decimal system, I am very... OCD I suppose you'd say, about the decimal system, I have the decimal system on anilist.co, and that's very helpful for me, marking it just the way I want to. Like one series might be an 8.5 and another series might be an 8.8. Or one might be an 8.0 and another series might be a 7.9, close to being an 8 but just off for some reason. If you're someone who rates your anime as soon as you're done watching it, and then later change your score, maybe wait a day or so, don't score it, and then think about how you feel about a series or movie and then score it. Again, there's no real right or wrong way to rate things, everyone rates things differently after all, but I figured that this might help people who want to get better at scoring and understanding their taste and likes better. |

this isn't a bad categorization of the MAL ranking system. Even with shows I hate (below a 5/4) I still try to finish them out so as to give a good/balanced score. I'm not giving a show I dropped a score as maybe the ending redeemed its bad initial scoring in my head and could make it better. Though I'm not about to go back and try to stomach through the initial show if thats the case and better to just leave it dropped imo than to give it a final ranking on my list. |

I don't use a certain scoring system, I score everything based on my enjoyment. If I like something I give it a high score, if I like something less, I don't give it a high score, if I really dislike something, I drop it, because there is no point on finishing it just to give it a low score, that would mean to waste my time watching something boring just to give it a score that nobody cares about. |

I mostly give a score depending on my enjoyment, but I noticed I started to give a few bad scores since I got aboard the seasonal anime train But I never gave any 1 or 2 yet, and I hope I'll never do I usually use a 7-10 rating system since I try to only watch anime I enjoy, and I don't mind giving a 10 either |

I use the good ol' german system, 1-6 scale, meaning 1 is the best thing ever and 6 being the worst. Serious answer: I gave 10 to my favs, 9 and 8 to the shows I like a lot, 7 and 6 to the so so stuff, 5 to mediocre stuff. And 4,3 and 2 to the boring bad anime. I keep 1 for that anime that will really be bad and ugly (flcl alt was close) |

I try my best to evaluate both my enjoyment from the series and how good I thought the series was and give it a number. 10 means an anime that spoke to me on an emotional level and provided me with an amount of enjoyment per minute more than anything else could, 5 means an anime I thought was pretty par for the course, and 1 means an anime so awful it's hard to even call it an anime at all. The other ratings are in between those. Since 5 is what I give to average anime my mean score is also very close to 5. |

bleh I just stopped caring bout that. I no longer rate my anime. In my case, I just felt that thinking of a score kind of took part of the enjoyment. I feel better just watching them without having to think of what the score for it is. |

I generally follow the guidlines but 6 is "forgettable but fun", 1 is "so bad it's good", and 9 is "flawed masterpiece". I'm thinking of retooling the scores on my list to add another, 4 being "I am not the target audience for this but I imagine people who are would like it", but for now 4 is just "bad". |

I go along with the MAL guidelines.. anything 7+ is something I enjoy. Some of my 8-10 is stuff I would rewatch, others fulfilled their purpose the first time. 9-10s are shows I think highly of and/or got hooked on almost right away or found the most interesting. I don't differentiate anything 6 and under too much. 5-6 are shows that didn't interest me more so than being a bad show, then 4 or under I just found either super uninteresting or bad Most of those are shows I've watched with someone else or watched out of curiosity and just didn't want to drop even though I'm kind of mad at myself for watching a show I didn't like |

I reserve 1 - 5 for characters I hate. The lower the number between 1 and 5, the more intensely I hate a single character or multiple characters. 6 is an oddball anime that has likable characters, but nothing else is consistent. 7 has likable characters and is consistent, but is full of missed opportunities. 8 has likable characters and is consistent, and fulfills almost but not all of my selfish desires, and it was made clear to me that it wasn't going to fulfill all of them. 9 is an anime that led me on and therefore I expected it to fulfill every selfish desire, but dropped the ball late in the game. 10 is an anime I expected to fulfill every selfish desire and it did. |

10 - Masterpiece. May have a few nit picks but are not too noticeable 9 - Amazingly great, but not too perfect 8 - Same as a 9, but a few more flaws 7 - Good, but far from perfect 6 - It's okay, but could've been better 5 - Meh 3-4 - Kinda bad 1-2 - What kind of crap did I just watch? |

FlowersInTheRain said: Heimur said: Using the one that MAL provided, seems silly to use another one. Agreed. I am the same. I don't get why people don't follow the standard. Because, 1. It makes no difference. Whether one only uses the high end, only the low end, considers 5 a good score, or considers 5 a bad score. In the end, one is going to be influencing the difference in ratings the same as long as they apply their score system the same way with every anime. And, most importantly, 2. Most people who follow the given system end up only using the high end for 90%+ of the anime on their list. And then give pretty arbitrary low scores to the occasional show they don't like. Someone will give every 7+ then give a 2 to something for whatever reason. If you ask me, that makes very little sense. You're basically cramming every you like in to 3-4 tiers, and then giving a random score about of 6-7 tiers that are mostly unused when you don't like something. I was like that too, but after a while I wanted my scores to have more meaning, so I spread out everything from 'it bored me' to 'life-changing best experience ever' from 3-10. Anime I consider 'bad' I only use 1-2. This fits better with my philosophy that there are very few truly 'bad' anime and most stuff people don't like it's just because those shows aren't for them. People need to be more humble and admit when it was their failure to appreciate something rather than the show failing them. So my system look like this: 10 - Groundbreaking Experience. Stuff which pushed to boundaries of what I thought I could experience from fiction/art. 9 - Complete Experience. Stuff which reached the peak of what is possible without breaking new ground for me personally in any way. For all intents and purposes this is my highest score - my 'masterpiece' tier. 8 - Almost Complete Experience. A 'flawed masterpiece'. It did everything right except for that one thing. Be it a poor ending or some other plot failing, a character that had potential but didn't quite hit the mark, or whatever it was, there was something that held it back. 7 - Exceptional. Something which stands out due to one or more elements which had the makings of a 9+ but there were too many little nagging issues or one big thing like a terrible ending. 6- Solid. There was nothing really amazing or stand-out, but the anime achieved what it set out to do well enough. 5- Alright. Enjoyable at times but mostly uninspired. I liked it as much as I like most anime. 4- Weak. Very uninspired. Rarely enjoyable. The opposite of 8s in that with these there was only one thing which kept me watching. Usually a cute girl with decent fan service, sometimes it's a case of anime which continually look like something interesting is going to happen but it never does. 3. Boring. Completely uninspired. Then 2&1 are punishment tiers for when I feel like something fundamentally fails as art. Usually a botched production on top of a completely uninspired concept or something which shouldn't even be on MAL like this: |

Mine is still based fundamentally on what MAL says each rating should be, but I've lumped common experiences I have with anime into each category for easier sorting. 10: Absolutely amazing, either I can't find fault or it's an all-time fave. 9: I'm very attached to the show (ex: if I've cosplayed from it, it's almost certainly a 9, at least) 8: A solid show, very good! 7: A show that's good, but that I'm critical of in some way. 6: A show with potential, but weighed down by its flaws. A lot of forgettable shows end up here. 5: Very mixed opinions or just plain boring. Often, "I wanted to like this show." 4: The bad outweighs the good. 3: This show doesn't need to exist or was painful to watch. 2: For shows that have... issues. Like... sketchy issues. Ex: prominent incest plots. 1: Absolutely atrocious in every way. For me, this has to include the art. |

Those fucking graphics are killing me, lmao. I love the internet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- My enjoyment is actually the biggest factor when it comes to scores: 10- Masterpiece: Basically all time favorites that had me excited about the story and art. 9- Excellent: Brilliant, I enjoyed a ton but it had something that I did not like. 8- Very Good: Can be that I enjoyed an specific aspect of the series, but it had some flaws (usually being 12 episodes hurts series for me, or not having a final per se). 7- Good: I would recommend it, but it might not be for everyone or did not met my expectations. 6- Regular: Most of the things I have watched. I kinda like it but just to a certain degree. 5- Mediocre: Same as 6 but it did not make a reaction on me, so most of my shows with a 5 are/were boring. 4- Bad: Nothing memorable besides animation, character designs or maybe an specific character. 3- Very Bad: Most of the bad anime I have seen but I enjoyed to some extent. 2- Terrible: Things that hurt or were a complete waste of time. 1- Basically Midori, Blood C and very few shows. |

BAD SCORES: 1: Fuck off. The worst of the worst. No merits whatsoever, just pure trash. 2: Horrible. Some minor redeeming factors, but overall egregious. 3: Bad. I had no enjoyment, but there might've been some aspect I liked (such as music, art, etc). 4: Mediocre. Big "meh" for me. Either highly flawed and somewhat enjoyable or a decent show that I just didn't like for whatever reason. 5: Average. Pretty self-explanatory, but this is also the score I give to shows that I respect, even if I didn't like them. GOOD SCORES: 6: Good. The pros outweighed the cons, but it's not something I'd revisit. Still recommendable. 7: Very good. Thoroughly enjoyed these from start to finish. Maybe a dull moment here or there, but a solid watch. 8: Excellent. This score (or higher) means that I consider myself a member of the fanbase. These shows are typically the peak of my personal enjoyment, and I often find myself rewatching them on a whim. 9: Phenomenal. These made me feel a wide spectrum of emotions. All-time favorites of mine, and always possessing an outstanding amount of technical merit (quality of direction, writing, audiovisual aspects, etc). 10: Transcendent. Essentially flawless in my eyes, but what pushes these works the extra mile is the fact that I learned something valuable from them that I'll likely never forget for the rest of my life. This applies to any artistic medium: anime, film, literature, manga, etc. These are the kinds of works that inspire me on both a personal and creative level. I can see myself rewatching or rereading these for years and years to come. |

Pretty much who it was intended, but I do understand why people get so frustated while tring to chose betwen close numbers I developed this method to help: Imagine a scale of 1 to 5 1 is "I Disliked it alot" 2 is "I disliked it" 3 is "I don't liked or disliked it" 4 is "I liked it" and 5 is "I liked it alot" Then after you chose a number you mutiply it by 2 and them think "betwen only the shows that I rated 2/4/6/8/10 does it feels like the better half or the lower half?" if it feels like the better half you keep the score if not you decress 1 |

In my country grades are from 2(fail) to 6(excellent) so I thought it would be much easier to score animes on MAL like that: 2-fail, 3-poor, 4-good, 5-very good, 6-excellent, so I can then have to explain to people I know and don't know why and how I rate animes from 2 to 5 on a 10 point system. But because we also have halves, like good 3.5 is equal to good 4 it got really complicated and....you get it π Yeah I'm just using the MAL scoring as you're supposed to. |
