Agree on removal of ranking system, but I would rather keep the scoring system. It is still useful when making anime recommendation to people to know what they enjoyed and what they avoid.

I do not think you can not have a scoring system without having a ranking with it as well

but people should indeed not focus on the ranking order when scoring cause that kinda would makes your score not your own anymore

Nobody takes scores seriously anymore for quite a while, long before the recent troll incidents. And I wouldn't blame the bored teenager lemmings lynchmob of taking down what was not working anyway. There are several options:

1) Throw math at it
basically what anidb.net does, which is to normalize ratings to fit the rater's own average (self-weighting), using temporary and permanent votes, having different categories of votes. Or what IMDB does, such as having more demographic groups and weight "good reviewers" higher but in an intransparent way. This is the hard way.

2) Let the children play
I'm using my own system to find out a fair rating, and that is picking friends with high affinity only. I basically have a subset of 100 MAL users I trust, and of whom I know they use full range rating. I only care for that view, not for the official rating. MAL should offer more support for individualized views on the DB, one size fits all has failed, imho. You shouldn't need to abuse the friends function to get useable views.

From the creators of "Let's make some bots to downgrade Chihayafuru 3 because it dared to face Vinland Saga" comes "Let's boost Ishuzoku Reviewers because Funimation dared to drop it". I think I'm getting used to create this kind of threads. I'll take the chance to ask @luna if there's any improvement or news about the supposed system to finish with fake accounts and mass rating trolling.

I guess the issue is that we aren't bots but simply people who think this is fun ;)
Well unfortunately you're just as malicious in the eyes of the staff

Making accounts for the sole purpose of upvoting or downvoting one or a few entries is against the terms of service regardless of whether the account happens to be created by hand or by a bot. Either way they have historically been deleted by the mods sooner or later. Now that's of course about to change but nevertheless in about two weeks time that kind of effort will be wasted anyway as any spam accounts will be discounted from the site's scoring formula henceforth

The scores are relevant, as long as they correspond to what people like and vote in consequence. It's bot spamming what is an issue here, not the tastes of the community. There was nothing to fix until a bunch of trolls felt they had to make a point and an even bigger bunch of trolls felt it was funny to fuck up things because Nux Taku ordered them so.

So yeah, this will eventually be fixed and right now it's a dumb mass trolling. I hope we don't lose something in the process like we did with the review system.

The scores are not relevant when they are community based

You know when the vote has no critics is completely pointless
Community based poles would get mediocre stuff like demon slayer as anime of the year even tho objectively speaking (ratings being meant to be objective atleast 50%) it's not even top 20

Being highly rated because the community likes it is a point, it indicates that the community likes it.

Don't use "pointless" as a buzzword here when you are talking about your own personal issues.

Not really, I always find ranking system in MAL to be ridiculous since anime is such a wide spectrum of topic and audience, some would have massive viewership and others would be limited to a certain niche, there are shows that people would avoid and would never watched and never score and there's shows that would attract some niche and getting good score even with low viewership. Putting a rankng system on these is oversimplifying the variety of genre and niche in anime medium. If there's a ranking to be put on scale it should be sales (like box-office), or simply amount of viewers that watched it, not the score that given by viewers.

Community based scores are more often than not popularity based instead of quality based (that does not mean they are useless but they are also a bit skewed cause of it)

Which is probably why people are saying they are not relevant

Of course. They are not single indicators of quality. They are aggregates and are useful as aggregates, that is, to show tendencies, popularity and what the MAL community likes or dislikes as a whole. Just because they are not relevant the way some people want them to be doesn't mean they aren't relevant.

Because the community can't score things objectively. You give your score base on your own personal taste as everybody else.
And the highest scores will always go to the animals that reach a broather public, the ones with most media, see Kimetsu no Yaiba case, It's an ok anime but not enouth to be to 20 or best of the year... The high scores are only there due the media exposure...

As I said in my other post, the users recommendation by similarity are more useful than the scores... just watch a few episodes and decide for yourself if is good or not...

but it is not like MAL only has 1 ranking order you also have Most Popular & Most Favorited
and you kinda can make your own ranking order using "Anime Search"

it is just that when one has ratings there will be a highest/lowest rated one as well
hence the you can not have one without the other

Uhm, then what I said in the post above applies as well.

Also, what's the deal with Kimetsu no Yaiba? Do you think it's the first show to blow up in popularity? I don't even think the show is good enough for its rank on MAL, but people loved it well enough for it to be there. That's all that matters in an aggregate.

Kimetsu no Yaiba is just the fresher example that came to my mind, I believe that someone famous talking about it on twitter made the show blow out of proportion... But anime that reach more people will always get a boost on this kind of aggregation site...

Hi. Me again.

I wanted to make a follow-up post here, in light of the current onslaught of Ishuzoku Reviewers—led by one individual who has seeming lost his marbles or let internet fame get to his head. Thanks to this individual's easily-influenced mob followers, Ishukozu Reviewer's score has been tampered with so badly, it makes the trolls who spammed Chihayafuru 3 look weak. I don't have words to express how such a display of thoughtlessness makes the staff feel, particularly Luna and I who were in a sheer panic when we first saw the flood of scores.

Negativity aside, I managed to find two silver linings in this whole fiasco.

Before all this happened, I received word that the development team may be done Phase 1 sooner than expected, and so we were trying to schedule an earlier release date (taking into consideration the weekend and national holidays in Japan). Silver-lining #1 is we shouldn't have to live with this long.

Second, we were so focused on combating illegitimate scores given by duplicate account creation, we didn't consider illegitimate scores given by legitimate users due to vote brigading. Don't get me wrong, we want to tamper with MAL scores as little as possible. However, when an entry receives upwards of 15,000 "10" votes in less than 24 hours and those votes can be linked to one source, there is clearly a problem... So silver lining #2 is we will try to modify what we're releasing in Phase 1 to also deal with this (and Pingu in the City, too).

Once the release date is finalized, I will make a site-wide announcement explaining as much as I can related to this issue, Chihayafuru 3, and the changes this will lead to in MAL's Top page. (As I've said before, up votes and down votes typically cancel each other out for highly-rated, highly-popular series, so don't expect massive changes in the Top 10.)

Finally, I just want to say thanks to some of the rational-thinking users who posted in this reddit thread. I know it soothed the moderator team a little to see others recognize that this senseless action only harms volunteers and users unrelated to the company this individual claims to be protesting against.

Thank you to everyone who spoke out (here or elsewhere) for your support. We will continue to try and make this situation right as speedily as possible.
I think Symphogear was also massively upvotyed out of nowhere sometimes ago, along with a couple of manga entries.

Anyway, I'm honestly shocked at how quickly this site-wide solution is coming, I thought it would be a similar case to the API, but thanks god, good job MAL team.

the age rating is correct though it is R+ - Mild Nudity (I would agree it is not really Mild though :P)

but it is not fully Nudity either and probably for other reasons besides that one it is not a Rx - Hentai

Yeah, that's why I think using Chihayafufu's case to press MAL's owners to seek a permanent solution was better than a quick fix of the score like a lot of users were asking MAL mods to do.

Here I am just sitting back with a bucket of popcorn watching this shit show unfold and find it absolutely hilarious. I myself love the show and also find Nux's videos pretty good.

Also I probably wont be voting because well forums and reviews aren't much of my thing (Stares at the 400+ anime I have downloaded at watched but never put into MAL because of my lazy ass). So please give me more of this stuff to fill my popcorn bucket with.

Plus I think that brigading/bot-reviewing isn't really that good of a thing overall (Though I do think that mass negative reviews have more of an effect then mass positive ones). Though inherently scoring systems in communities (Especially ones with smaller inside groups) can be a bit skewed because of the view points within those inside groups (A insider group pulling their influence into how good an anime should be precised would still technically counts messing with the scores. Even if it is only by a few points and not mass adding 1/10 or 10/10).

Anyway... *Gets back to popcorn eating*

I understand this is sarcastic, yet major rating systems such as imdb.com's work like that. You collect criteria for what a "good reviewer" is like: membership duration, activity in forums, contributions such as reviews and recommendations, number of rated anime, distribution of scores and so on. Based on that, different weights are assigned. In a nutshell, the more work you put into MAL, the more your opinion counts. Sounds fair.
