I liked the show's sport parts and I was ok with some drama, but this one had too much drama. It's like every single member had some form of family issues, which is not realistic. Sucks that the shows was canceled in such weird way

so much for my praising 8-bit for not being trash anymore. They did the Director bad with this. I hope they give a season 2 because this story NEEDS to be finished properly. I also noticed animation took a dive but it was passable. Good god I hope they greenlight a season 2 some day....

8bit don't decide it lmao it's not the studios who fund anime or anything like you think as if just one company funds everything, it's many companies on the production committee which has many from different industries. 8bit is on the committee, yes, but they are the 5th company with more funding on the project, it's not like they can and will do it alone as the other companies need to agree between them.

I didn't mean to solely blame them but they're still involved in this pretty heavily and have a history of making complete garbage until extremely recently.

So much drama - from the MAL community. I'd love a season 2 but would still be happy with this anime the way it ended. Tennis was a respite for these boys. Despite success and friendships on the court they still have to go back to their difficult home lives. In some ways it might be better to leave it as is rather than trying to tie up all the story threads.

This ending was disgusting and the match made me angry... but well I enjoyed it nontheless i think 8/10 for now

I heard that this series was originally meant to be 24 eps but got cut very late into production so they didn’t have time to rework the story... it’s a tragedy bc my only problem with this show is that it felt rushed. the first few episodes were paced really nicely and if the series was given 24 eps I think that nice pacing could’ve been consistent

A bitch 'bout to get shanked.

Uh, yeah this show is pretty messy. The shifts from happy teamwork friendship tennis time to the familial abuse and crushed dreams seems too abrupt, disjointed, and numerous. Knowing that it had its schedule messed with and that they had to make changes accordingly makes me feel better about how things turned out. Hope it gets a S2 in the future because I'm a sucker for psychological fuckery like this, I'll be honest. I'm also a sucker for happy teamwork friendship sports time anime so I'll say I thoroughly enjoyed this show. The LGBT positivity was nice too.

If I were more arrogant about my opinions on shows, I'd contribute a 7 to its score.

After 12 episodes, Stars Align comes to an end. The match was intense, with both teams willing to do whatever it takes to win. It was heartwarming to see Maki and Touma give the champions a challenge and it's clear they had fun. Unfortunately, what should have been a moment of happiness and union only leads to tragedy and pain. Touma finally learns that his mother never really loved him while Maki… well, let's just say he's taking steps on a very dark path. It would appear that the dark lord has succeeded in his quest to turn the hero to the dark side. To make things worse, we don't know if a season 2 will happen, leaving fans to settle with this tragic conclusion for the story. If you ask me, Stars Align was a great show. Sure, the family drama can get overbearing sometimes but overall, this was a serious contender for best anime of the year. Hopefully, this will earn a continuation and give the soft tennis team the happy ending they deserve.

This show started so strong.
I wasn't a fan of all the drama, it felt a little much, but if it had a satisfying ending that justified it, than I would have been happy.
This ending was a train wreck, full of loose ends and the dumbest final scene I have ever seen in my life.
I get the production was cut from 24, to 13 and finally to 12 episodes, but damn, they still could have chosen a better ending than this.
If I ever see 8bit and original anime, I know to avoid it in the future.

On a side note I noticed Funimation have this listed as 13 episodes, so it seems they too were sold a false promise too.
“I just spent the last two years thinking that you guys knew more than me about life and I just found out that you guys are just as dumb as me.” “Duh-doy.” “Yeah, duh-doy.”

Man there are so many people that give bad reviews... but if that's what they think of it I'll respect that.

Really loved the anime until the very end, but I still really want this to get the other 12 episodes after finding out it originally had 24 episodes. I won't say that the anime has "ended" already cause there's a possibility that it's gonna have a second season.

Also, I'm really happy for how Mitsue has grown. She really supported them at the end and she's taking her soft tennis drawings more seriously now, while ignoring the bad comments about them.

Man, you just gotta love how self-fullfilling the anime industry is when it comes to taking risks.
"Uh, hey, first off, we only do 12-episode seasons, even though it's usually not enough for jack shit, but hey we're afraid of not making enough profit. No, not of actually losing money, just of not making enough profit. But ok, let's make this one 24 episodes, it looks interesting enough and has enough material to work with. ... Actually, no, we know you're far too ahead with production, but let's make it 12 episodes only. ... Oh for fuck's sake, we're getting all bad reviews, can't imagine why, but see this is a perfect example of why we only allow 12 episodes, at least we can cut or losses quickly this way!"
Playing it safe is one thing, but it's practically become the only driving principle everywhere and it sucks, because it's ruining all the potentially phenomenal work some people might be able to produce.

Honestly, knowing about what happened to the production makes me too angry to even contemplate the episode itself, and I know that that's a shame and a disgrace.

On the contrary, I'm quite sure that's actually one of the points of this anime. It's a whole lot more realistic than many people (especially otaku) realise. Most of the things here are just never put on display, the person living any of it might have one best friend who knows about, and that's all. Heck, even the kids themselves might not be aware of issues, because the parents hide it from them at or up to about this age.

Sad to hear that there were suposed to be 24 episodes instead of 12.

BUT that doesn't mean the show was bad. It's just an open end.
Don't expect every show to end with everything wrapped up in a nice little package.
As a matter of fact, some of the very best shows end with an ambiguous finale.

Well this was seriously a disappointing ending...Toma and Maki didn't even get together in the end with a kiss at least, or Yu/Toma when Yu had a crush on him that was addressed earlier in the season that was for nothing apparently :/

Also what the fuck was with Maki just planning to go kill his dad in the end? and why was Shou at his apartment and a broken glass on the floor? where was Maki's mom?

This show started off interesting, and fun but it had an unsatisfying ending with so many unresolved plot lines

I know everyone is mad about the cliffhanger ending but obviously the creator did that on purpose to make people demand a second season. I hope it works because otherwise...yikes.

I'm not going to rate this show for now.

Just my theory but maybe Shou was visiting the mom or something then the dad came and Shou tried to fight him off (the broken glass on the floor), and was able to because the money was still in the table while he was there.

Edit: Just rewatched the part and saw that the envelope was ripped, so he probably got it after all. So maybe Shou and Maki's mom were there when the dad came for the money, and they got into a fight.

What the the hell happened to this show and then this ,this is the ending we get crazy such a waste that it never got the time it needed

for now Stars align is just a sports anime with a bit of a coming of age story only to gut punch you and force serious drama right in your face whenever you end up feeling even slightly good.

which would be fine if any of that was justified and earned but it isn't and the fact this is the ending we got showcases that.

damn shame i really was enjoying this up till the last couple of episodes even i feel it's a bit weird to rate this due to it pretty much being a unfinished anime in some other timeline i hope this show ended up better than what we got.

This show is one of the worst sport anime shows ever.
This show is one of the most random dramas in anime history.

As the director had enough time to change the plot, he should have focused on essentials reducing offshoots. Although it should have made the show more solid, he neglected the effort and released such a mess. It's not sincere to the audience and it's not what professionals do: it's a deed of a child who throws a tantrum. There is no project that has infinite time, money and other resources.

I am glad they didn't speed up the pacing.

Looks like they are planning to make a new season. I hope they get to make it.

I had kind of predicted Maki would try to kill his dad, but I am still trembling. This anime so easily goes from happy to dark.

Damn, I hate Touma's mum! How can she even think of separating the brothers?

The twins were so likeable!

I noticed an error at the beginning when the team cheered for Touma and Maki, and there was a shot with Arashi, even though he wasn't in the scene. lol.

Also, I am quite worried about Maki's mum.

Honestly, this series can have 100 episodes and I will still find unrealistic the fact of seeing a club only formed by kids with such shitty people as parents.

By the way, I'm aware that the director got screwed over but posting a twit about your misfortune once the series concludes instead of doing it since the beginning sounds more like an excuse to cover your ass for the eventual backlash regarding how lame the overall drama and that cliffhanger with Maki was.

Anyways, regarding the episode, the directing was quite odd. From the weird cut in the OP to those long shots of the twins looking at the sky while talking about their "domain" and the last sequence with Maki about to do something I was expecting from Toma... I don't know, it was like they tried to rush thing up but not at the same time... quite odd, honestly.

Overall, this series had a quite strong beginning with its first 3 episodes but sadly, as I stated in ep. 3, the overuse of drama regarding family issues absolutely killed the charm this show once had.

4/10 - Easily, my disappointment of the season. A real shame considering the high hopes I had but well. As they say: when a door closes, a window opens and "Beastars" has done a fantastic job at making me forget about this train-wreck of a series.

I legit am going to copy and paste the same comment that I left elsewhere about this anime and in regards to its ending:

This comment will probably tract a lot of bad comments, but here’s my controversial, unpopular opinion about this whole crap show that we are dealing with in the finale of Stars Align: Reading a lot of arguments about the ending and about the approach to judge this anime, I have especially seen people bring this up as opposition to supporters of this anime: Stars Align is just not one of the top ranking anime series in the fall 2019 lineup. Sadly, this is true. In many rankings (which I can cite if someone would like the source), it falls as number 11 or even number 15, whereas other anime like SAO, Fate, My Hero Academia, and any other continuation of previous anime series are all ranked within the top 10 anime series of these same lists. And sadly, these continuations will continue to get ranked highly (or at the very least higher than works like Stars Align that legit have nothing to work off of) regardless of the season of lineup. This is the nature of the consumers and the anime industry- it’s safe for the industry to simply continue some crap overrated series because viewer support is solid and will be there regardless of the quality of the continuation. Their support is crucial to the boost of these anime’s sales. With the growth of anime, this has been a relatively “new” issue, but the consequences are severe. Creativity, risk, deviation from consumer’s love in anime, and all factors that once made exceptional series has become devalued, and the destructive result is that other anime is left in the dust and unrecognized.

So, what I am saying is this: I don’t buy into this crap argument that people are saying that Stars Align wasn’t a good anime in the fall 2019 line-up and that in the end, it still sucked. But the greater tragedy beyond this abrupt ending is that many anime watchers will continue to give the anime low ratings even when these viewers know the director’s circumstances with the anime. They will continue to judge it mercilessly as if there was no reason to the abrupt ending. It’s like the whole equity and equality argument.

Sure, you can treat Stars Align with a brutal axe with your review just as much as you would with your reviews with other anime, but that completely disregards the truth that leads to its hard, unfair criticism: the anime and the director was screwed over and, as a result, inevitably, left incomplete.

So, fine, go ahead and judge this anime as brutally as you would with other anime, but know that you are sadly not only subscribing to the decision to cut the anime in the first place, but also proving why the anime industry is such a harsh industry that restricts the risk and creativity needed to create the possibility of good anime.

Great episode 8/10 I loved the final match and the reactions on both sides of players
I think the last part of this episode was kinda shocking and the fact that they left this last episode with our mc wanting to murder his shit head dad is very captivating I don't see that as a flaw.

The fact that this was supposed to be 24 episodes really makes sense when you look back at some of the unfinished ends of the previous episodes. Things just blowing over from one ep to the next, etc. The animation in this episode was clearly all spent on the sky & not on the people oof. I really hope one day this can be remade, with the proper 24 episodes. Also a second season would be nice. That ending was WILD. Overall I really loved this series, though. 9/10.

Damn, this was one tense cliffhanger!

I pray that the Production Committee will now fund for the 2nd Season and not leave this hanging.

Boy, that was one intense match at the start though. Itsuse Brothers proved why they're champions by pulling ahead on two crucial occasions like that but that was an awesome fight from the two nonetheless! But at the end of the day they're nowhere close to the 'true' champions, that's reality. Seeing the crowd cheering for them was a really nice addition too, always love to see that!

Cutting off the Op & ED weren't great signs to begin with but those final few moments are much more frightening than anticipated. Yikes, Maki has finally snapped now. Did his father seriously kidnap his mother? Now, that's a new low. Shit.

And, on the other hand, Touma's stepmom has given it up. I could tell something was wrong with the too-smooth conversation and sure enough it was. I wonder how Ryouma will address this to Touma, and I'm super duper curious on the possibility of Touma and Maki being stepbrothers or something of that sort. Darn it! This show really deserved the remaining cour...

Meanwhile, Mitsue seems to have made a decision to ignore the internet which is very nice to see! Seeing the team in such high spirits seems to have done a trick on her too.

Overall, this has been a fantastic show! Sure, the Drama did indeed go overboard a few times (and it supposedly to all the members from all aspects of abuse to mishandling parents is quite unrealistic too, no doubt) and we didn't really get any closure on any of the family matters yet but I feel like the groundwork for the next season has been brilliantly set up. A little doubtful given what the cliffhanger was hinting at but I'm pretty sure Maki will drop the idea somewhere along the line, right?

I really enjoyed the focus on the soft tennis developments too! 8bit have proven to be capable of consistent animation and this was no exception, the fluid movements were really nice! Some of the tactics that the teams came up with felt really realistic as well although the results of some of the matches a little questionable, quite admittedly.

I really liked the aspect of the boys finding solace and unity through soft tennis as well, they do go through some real shit back at their respective homes after all.

In the Sound Department, I've next to no qualms whatsoever. Both the Op and ED are among the finest of the year. Soundtracks were great and their intricate usage was a pleasure to have along! Voice Acting, I almost never have issue with this and likewise here.

As such, I'll give this show a solid 8/10 overall. Seeing the hate here is baffling to me but I suppose that can't be helped, this isn't exactly the easiest show to watch or recommend to others after all. I'm dearly hoping that there'll be more of this...

What really grinds my gears is all the bad ratings/scores the series is getting / going to get, from too many people who don't bother finding out the reason why it is the way it is. Almost all the issues the anime has stems from the fact we basically have half of the story - because of corporate shenanigans. Disgraceful, disgusting, shame.

Keeping my fingers crossed this goes well in Japan and the comitee gives it a shot so that the director can make a 2nd season a reality.

But getting informed that you'll get 12eps to work with instead of 24? That's some major bs. No wonder the second half felt rushed as hell, director must've been strugling.

And people giving it low scores 'cuz "lol the drama was shit, guy who wrote it was lazy etc etc. " Read why its' the way it is. This is only half of the story,it was originally planned (and still is planned hopefully) to be a 2 cour show.
