This episode was very sad, indeed, the rest of the show consist of 15 minutes of sadness for about 12 episodes lol.

I'll raise one point because of the well executed ending.

5.7/10 (thanks to the technical/production values)

One thing that RUINED this anime was the comedy genre, Graduation ceremonies are so sad damn it, Naoi cried after all, and a confession at a time like this it's like stabbing you 1000 times damn it, the ending was kinda good to be honest if the last scene was the after life of course, if that is true that would be great to see Otonashi not left alone in that place damn it's creepy. 8/10

I unfortunately didn't full on cry like I was expecting but I had wet eyes. The only anime to date that has made me cry buckets were Madoka Magica and Wolf Children. It was also pretty predictable that Kanade had something donated from Otanashi, although granted I didn't think it would have been his heart.

Overall though, despite being slightly disappointed with the ending this was a day well spent in marathoning it. 7/10

The feels are a real thing...
A vast portion of the story development was way too cheesy and felt forced (with the exception of the hilarious hyperkinetic-moe Yui <3): the past lifes we got to know where really sad and believable; the ending was a lot more than meets the eye; episode 10 was a huge masterpiece; the scenes were people disappeared succeded at hitting the kokoro with some kind of melancholy.

Somehow I feel the show is a bit overrated because of the cheesy stuff... but it managed to send a strong message in the really important scenes.

Can't give it less than an 8 and I'm hesitant to give it a 9 because of the "filler" (of course it is not just filler, but was a "not so good" way to develop characters)

My kokoro feels stuff...

This finale was very heartfelt and I was touched by it... But despite being arguably the saddest episode, it still didn't make me cry! Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed in that aspect, since I do love a good cathartic cry. The series as a whole didn't really live up to its potential, either. There are quite a few things I wish they would've expanded on, and other things they could've changed entirely, but even though it's not a masterpiece, I still enjoyed watching it.

I assume you're referring to the last seconds, where Kanade and Otonashi are shown, lolol. I've seen lots of misconceptions about this. They got reincarnated (somehow keeping their appearances, but we'll ignore that) and are meeting again in a new life.

After watching the last episode, I was quite confused because I had so many questions. I think more episodes would have benefitted this anime a lot! I wanted to know the backstories of all of the characters and not just a few. Most of them just vanished without any explanation. But I did come up with my own theory that explains most of my questions. I'm pretty sure some people came up with the same or a similar theory already, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

I believe that Afterlife is a place that isn't connected to time at all. However, an entity (whatever that may be) designed it for teenagers of the modern age because there was modern technology and all of them were familiar with it. We already know that the souls that come to Afterlife couldn't accept their fates and were brought there to live a normal life and find peace. But some of them need other people to find their peace, like Yui needed love and Kanade/Angel needed to thank her donor.
I don't think that the souls were brought to Afterlife in the order they died in real life. Because Afterlife isn't connected to time, Otonashi's soul was brought there after Kanade's soul, even though he died before her in real life, so her soul could find peace.
I also believe that when everyone vanished, they weren't necessarily reborn in a time period after they originally died, but could have been reborn at any point in the past, present or future. They won't remember anything and grow up in that time period, but their souls will remember, which is why they will connect to some people instantly. It also explains how Kanade and Otonashi could meet after being reborn, even though in my theory, Otonashi didn't vanish immediately after Kanade.
I believe he couldn't leave Afterlife knowing that souls like Yuri would appear there and might never find peace because they would fight it. So he took over Kanade's spot. After watching the alternate ending, I'm even more convinced that this was the case. Then one day a person that he can trust to take over his spot like he took over Kanade's helps him to finally leave and be reborn. Which is probably the guy he talks to in the alternate ending. That is why he finally vanished in the credits. He spent some time, maybe even a very long time, helping souls in Afterlife (since he was always trying to help people) before he followed the others. Afterwards, he was reborn during the same time period as Kanade. Because their souls remember but they don't, Kanade wrote a song that "just came to her head", not knowing it was written by Iwasawa in Afterlife. She is humming it and Otonashi's soul remembers the melody, which prompts him to talk to her. It is open what happens next, but I like to think that they finally got the chance to be happy together. And I also hope Yui's and Hinata's soul found each other.

I'm just wondering who the guy that turned himself into an NPC was. At first, I thought it was Otonashi, but he couldn't have turned into an NPC since we see him vanish and being reborn. He was also not a NPC when the guy explained everything to Yuri. So it can't be him. But who was it then? Was it just one random NPC guy and it doesn't matter? Or is there a prequel or something that explains it?

I still rated it 9/10. I would have rated it 10/10 if they explained more and gave us the backstories of everyone. But I really liked this anime, especially how it was sad and funny at the same time.

That is a very good theory!! It explains the most significant plot hole of the series and strengthens the overall logic. ^_^

I'm little bit disappointed about the wasted potential of this series. Technically it was a great. Animation, art, synchro, sound and comedy, everything was really good. But sadly the end was way too rushed and it felt somehow anticlimatic. Characters like T.K, Noda and the others didn't even get a conclusion which is kinda sad. Let their backrounds alone, at least they should've been part of the graduation. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth, a few more episodes could've fixed that problem. Also the last scene wit Otonashi and Kanade would've had more impact,if they've focussed more on their romantic relationship beforehand. It was sad and I almost shed a tear, yet it wasn't as sad as I imagined. Nonetheless this anime was very fun to watch and it became one of my favorites.

Okay, I admit I cried after seeing tears pouring down Naoi's face.

This anime had some likable points but I... wanted it to be so much more. It was rushed, some episodes were just plain boring. It's pretty much a typical, average anime. Nothing to write home about though the idea of rebelling against god in the beginning could have made this much more intense and interesting if executed correctly.

Ah well. I probably won't watch it again, but I was too interested because I've been recommended it a couple times. 5/10

It could be that they don't show up immediately. Or that Angel Beats world time is not linked to real world time.

I just don't get why some people criticise Angel Beats so much! I mean, sure there WERE some unanswered questions, but sorry to disappoint you people, it's not Naruto, it doesn't have 700+ episodes. Just 13. Based on that fact, I personally think that things were wrapped up pretty well. Plus, people keep complaining about how SHORT it is. Do you know how much time and effort the producers must have put into this?? And do you have any idea how much it must've COST?? The producers put their heart and soul into this, but you're STILL not satisfied! What more do you possibly want?! Oh, and it's BORING??? What part about it is "boring", hmm? It has a very original and ingenious plot! Why don't YOU try to coming up with a plot like that! Sorry if I sound rude, but I just feel kinda pissed after I read some of the comments over here. I mean, this anime taught me a lot. This is just my opinion though, and I don't mean to force it onto anyone.

Umm... I don't get it. Things wrapped up just like that? Even Naruto fillers feels somewhat sadder.

Kanade and Yuzuru almost had no romantic progression. Neither does axe wielding guy being in love with Yarippei. Things just don't go anywhere at all. I don't get it, I just don't. They setup so many characters just so that they become comedy plot device with nothing to explain for them. The anime could've just revolved around 5 people and it'd be better because they'd give more characterization to those 5 instead of spreading it out. In the end, we barely knew anything about Kanade. Even Isla from Plastic Memories have more meaningful character than Kanade because she was characterized for 12 episodes instead of just 1-2 episodes.

A lot of the story just random. The whole shadow thing, the whole God thing, the whole clone thing, everything is random. There's a good laugh and sad scenes like Yui's "what if" but that's pretty much it. Nothing else is remarkable. I'd even say Akame ga Kill have more feels and comedy than this despite being a half-assed adaptation and as a shonen anime.

This anime would've been more sad if we know more about Kanade's past. Instead we got a half-assed answer of her being saved by Yuzuru's heart... which kind of a plothole if she arrived way earlier than the guy himself. Heck, Yui's backstory and what if beats Kanade's story, which is almost none.

Ok, so I didn't really like this endig. Were I the only who waited almost the whole anime to see Kanade and Yuzuru together?
He tells her that he loves her and she says thank you and go?! like SERIOUSLY?!

BC HOW DID NO ONE NOTICED!!!:
She tells him that she got his heart, right? but she was at the afterlife world before him!
How did she took his heart and also died before him? this is fu.cked up

I don't like this end. Yuri just dissapeard and that's not a satisfying end for such a main character.
Also, most of the main characters had no ending. Everyone just went.
and what about Yuzuru? did he just left behind?
right after I ended watching the anime I went to see the Another Epligue and the end there is even terrible.

I liked the anime, not the ending. Also, this is so short. right after I started to feel something to the characters, it's over.

I hope for 2nd season if it's possible. I wanna see everyone's happy ending and I wanna see Yuzuru and Kanade together.

Seriously? This has been pointed out and explained way earlier than the current 32nd page. Hell, even in this very page, you can see explainations on the scenerio if you actually BOTHERED to look before accusing everyone of not noticing something everyone noticed.

Its like me saying, "Why didn't everyone notice they need to BREATHE IRL to live?!?!"

What is there so hard to understand?
They were worried about becoming water fleas because they had no idea what this world is and what it is for and they also had regrets about their lives, so when they figured everything out they moved on.
Yuri died because she killed herself, most likely. It's not stated, but she quickly drops the topic when Yuzuru assumes that.
Kanade died because of unspecified illness, but heart transplant from Yuzuru helped her live more, and her only regret was that she wasn't able to thank him.
Yuzuru moved on in the end, it's obvious from the credits, where he dissapears too. His reincarnation meets Kanade's reincarnation in after credits scene.
Also, no one EVER stated when they died, so there's no reason to assume that the time in afterlife works like in the real world.

What I think is that they still have their regrets taken care of but Otonash's real goal to find happiness in others. This world provides him with the opportunity to complete that one goal but with them getting reborn after they disappear; this can make him move forward, allowing him to meet Kanade again. How else would have Otonashi survived without a heart, this world is simulation like; with coding everywhere, and an afterlife like feel to the atmosphere. In this reborn world they can act on what they wished to do in the aftercode (a name for the setting in angel beats I came up with). As Japanese culture believes in the afterlife, and leading a fulfilling and positive life to get reborn; this is the story of a way to get that fulfilling life that they never got the chance to have. This makes it a cliche ending, with the characters meeting again creating a complete circle of events; giving the princess her prince when the conflict is resolved.

For me, I personally like this anime. Sure it has some pros and cons, but first lets talk about the cons;

The cons of this anime is that it left so many questions un answered. The biggest question of them all is that how did the two love birds end up in the real world? Or afterlife? I mean, i can understand kanade being alive, assuming, maybe while she was there in purgatory, her body was in surgery that time and 50/50 life and death situation. What i don't understand is that how did Yuzuru end up being alive? That's one of the many questions that's troubling me and where the hell did Yuri and the Other's go? Well i'm afraid this questions will never get answers even though i want more it feels like 13 episodes is kinda short. And of course who the F is TK? I am starting to wonder that TK is GOD himself (given the name TK or THE KING also refers to god) that would have been an awesome twist but sadly the anime ended 7 years ago so our hope is down the drain. I personally think that it would have been cool if they added 12 more episodes and 1st started the back story of kanade that would have shed some light on how she ended up there and the back story of some interesting characters like TK and that Samurai girl, sorry, forgot who she was.

Okay lets talk about the pros of this anime yes this anime does give us some bitter after tastes but we can't deny that we also love it. The fact is, what was the point of this anime. what was the lesson from all this. For me I personally learned a bunch of stuff, stuffs like how true and realistic it can be in the real world, aside from the super natural stuff. Suicides and deaths are just a fad right now. This anime talks about life on how you should live your life given the short amount of time (like Yuzuru did), it also talks about second chances and also talks about dealing with past lives and how we should move forward in the future, also talks about overcoming depression. Just like Yui, even though she did not fulfill her dreams while she was alive but she overcame it when she had a second chance, that is why Yui is my most favorite character i love her positive outlook in life. It also talks about hatred and love. When you do things out of hatred you will never get to where you want to be and it will always end in tragedy, that is why Yuri (leader of SSS) had it the hard way and find love is the only way out, love yourself and love others as well.

This anime clearly shows some heavy stuff does it? All cramped in 13 episodes. But the feels you get is real that it pierces your heart and that's what matters. That's all thanks.

Everything I want to say has been said in the first 2 or so posts. But please tell me I'm not the only one that believes the Kanada/Otonashi romance was really rushed and sudden. It was touching and all and maybe it's cause I wasn't used to anime yet but it felt like one day they were just getting to know each other and the next you're hit with a "I love you" and tears. Probably just me...

Graduation, the last episode of Angel Beats, I wonder how this is going to-

Fuck you Hinata! If you aren't going to take this seriously, I'm not!

Though for the most part, it's touching in a way. All this time they've been fighting to stay alive, but now, they finally came to gripes on how pointless it was and decided to move on.
Shame most of the side-characters disappeared off-screen with no backstory, so what could have been a great finale just turns 'good' because of all the wasted potiential.

And then, there was two..

Well, this came off as bittersweet, I guess this finale wasn't too bad after all, I mean, Jun Maeda-

Without any real explaination, they are all alive?
I just.......... huh?

This ends without any real conflict or resolution! And better yet! Explaination! So they were in a coma the entire time? What was the point of the school? Why did Naoi and Kanade have powers in the afterlife?
I WAS ASTROBASE BEFORE YOU EVEN!

Just gonna unquote those pictures here, to save some internet for later...

Yeah it had me baffeled and bamboozled, too at first. But then the issues raised up in my head.
I believe they were never in a coma, just in the very common purgatory/afterlife, which could also be a parallel universe created by a deity (it's not really clear if they meant christian god, because it had more buddhist elements). The enlgihtenment part is for me just a common trope I've seen many times before, in e.g. the sixth sense that did it a bit better, but different branch/budget.

Some big issues I heard here is why and where Kanade got all those nerd-skills. She just seems like a emotionless computer, but this could just be a depression caused by her ability to give people salvation. However it's one of the many nexplained elements.

So yeah, there's a lot to talk about, which is probably why it's popular.

If it was longer it would obviously be better, there are many unexplained plot holes, but even with 13 episodes, Angel Beats managed to deliver the almost whole thing perfectly!

I really love the character interaction and development that happens here. The whole story basically revolves around it. Even the side characters of the SSS members are interesting. However, the real deal is Yuzuru and Kanade. Their farewell made me tear up a little bit... I wish I could cry more! It also seems like Yuzuru arrived in this world later than Kanade, even though Kanade die after Yuzuru in the real world thanks to his heart... (There's a thread on that here in MAL)

In the end, Yuri never told how she died. Maybe it was really suicide all along, judging by how she reject something like having an internal struggle. Maybe she killed herself with a Baretta or desert eagle (That's the pistol she always uses here)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The name; Angel Beats! must've come from the beating heart of Yuzuri in the angel (Tenshi) which is Kande. it seems like them everybody else have been reincarnated back into the real world (And their appearances are pretty much the same!) Hopefully, they have a fulfilling life...

Okay, so off the top I give this Angel Beats an 8/10. The score could've been higher but I have sooo many problems with the story. For all the things angel beats does right, it does a lot of things wrong or could've been done better.

The soundtrack was the best thing about Angel Beats. The second best thing was the tragic storylines. Anytime a young person dies it's always going to be tragic and sad. I think the author exploited this to make the story tragic and dramatic.

The worst thing about Angel Beats was the plot. I found it very confusing in the beginning. I felt like Yurippe and the gang where fighting to get meal tickets. (if they're dead why do they need to eat?) And don't even get me started on the plot holes and things that were just left unexplained.

Really dislike that a lot of sss brigade members back stories went untold. So much is left unexplained. How did Yurippe die? Heck, we don't even know how most of them died and whats keeping them there. In the last episode, I felt like Noda wouldn't have left Yurippe, he loved her, he would've stayed to the end at the graduation ceremony with the other five.

With all that being said, I enjoyed watching angel beats. It's was funny and entertaining, especially as the show progressed. Uuuggh, I still have so many questions I want to be answered, I'm going to search the internet for answers.

Shame most of the side-characters disappeared off-screen with no backstory, so what could have been a great finale just turns 'good' because of all the wasted potiential.

And then, there was two..

<img src="http://i49.tinypic.com/1rf8lh.jpg" border="0" />

I WAS ASTROBASE BEFORE YOU EVEN![/quote the school was meant to help those kids pass on and the ending was when they reincarnate and that's what the meaning of the ending is

I liked this series, but I feel like others that the ending was a bit... odd.

Yuri and Hinata were my favorite characters. I liked Iwasawa as well but she didn't really end up doing much.

Yuri had one of the most interesting backstories to me, and she was definitely the most passionate and driven character. I honestly felt (towards the beginning of the series), that she and Otonashi would end up together. Seemed like they had chemistry, like during the rooftop "coffee" conversation. Kanade seemed a little too robotic for anyone to fall in love with, but to each their own.

Hinata was a loyal friend and provided some much needed comedy (what can I say, slapstick still gets me). I thought he and Otonashi had a great dynamic together, and I really liked his backstory.

My only critique is that it felt like the series lacked focus. There were points in the middle where it was like "So Otonashi is going behind the Battlefront's back and fraternizing with the enemy?" I felt like the main narrative changed directions a little too much.

All that said, I was still entertained, and the animation was nice. 7/10.

Enjoyable anime. Cried like a bitch, but can't say the writing was all that good through the anime. Well, it can't get really better as this condensing VN to 13 episode anime. Some scenes could have been handled better. And the last scene was just totally unnecessary. If I had to give it a score 6/10

Okay, this episode made a comeback despite the downfalls. Sure, there might be some flaws within the series yet the ending scene made me tear up. I wasn't even close to crying in the infinity war movie XD. First bunch of episodes were not really good yet the last 4 episode (10-13) were the BOMB. I am the type of guy who doesn't cry a lot yet this anime made me do so. The ending scene (After credits) for was kinda a cliffhanger since it ended with Otonashi trying to tap the shoulders of Kanade. Their relationship was a little rushed since the episodes were limited yet I can feel that the bond they had in the last couple of episodes was because of their fate. Kanade's heart was from Otonashi (I didn't know why she died though) so I guess it was fate who made them love each other. Ending was flawless for me despite some mistakes and flaws through out the series. Last scene after credit was kinda unnecessary since there's a little chance for season 2. Damn this anime's touching af. If there's still season 2, no doubt I'll watch it. Wish they answer the remaining questions in the anime. 10/10 for me

Damn, fuck ... just watching them disappear, every single one who disappeared hurt so bad deep down, conscious of it still just being an Anime, I still couldn't help but feel as though something is missing and god damn, I loved everything about this Anime despite a few plotholes and unlogical solutions to problems here and there. Fcking Yuri disappearing just like that after building so much ... ahhhh I can't, help me xD

This, is the only anime that made me cried, along with anohana and guilty crown. But this one is very best among all. It teaches you that life is short and tell you to live your life fully

I cried and I was just ready to throw my computer out the window until that after credits scene. That scene where they were all reborn and the new "Otanashi" went chasing after the new "Kanade" made it all worth it. 9/10
