Whoa this episode really like a bayonet piercing my chest then bursting shots right away, but let me still alive just to feel the pain all along.

This episode makes me realize that Antarctica is not the answer for shirase. It's like she said in the beginning "It was almost like a dream", everything that she did, everything that has done to her, those mails, those part times, those bullying, even 1 million yen. In her perspective it's like an imaginary thing, that describe how terrible these past 3 years, and Antarctica is like the end of september to her [ref: track 11 American Idiot].

Kimari said that she likes Antarctica, but then "But I'm not sure if I would have liked it if I were here by myself... As long as I was with you guys, I'd probably feel the same way about the Arctic." I think this is the answer, not only for Shirase.

At first I thought A Place Further Than The Universe was Antarctica, but now I think The Universe that trying to mention here is their life, the daily life that they are afraid of, daily life that they are trying to runaway from. A Place Further Than The Universe is a place you will never reach by your own hands. A Place Further Than The Universe would never have accomplished if they never been met. Kimari will always afraid to begin something and relying on Megumi for her entire life. Hinata will keep trying to hiding from her senior, Yuzuki trying hard to keep her friends and hurt her self at the same time, and Shirase living in her dream-like-life. A Place Further Than The Universe is a place far far away from they daily life before, A Place Further Than The Universe is a place where they could be together where ever it will be, The Girls Are Alright.

After watching this episode, I just re-watch all the episode from the beginning, now shirase's expression being heavier than before, damn.

Great first post sir, and that Green Day soundtrack tho...oh shit now I can't unhear it whenever I see Shirase (that would be a great setting for an AMV, just replace that soldier in the MV with Takako and we're set).

Had a feeling that when Shirase didnt cry when they first landed, it was because she was conflicted about how to feel. If she went and saw everything there was to saw, and then went to where her mom died, it would basically be bringing everything closure, which is something she didnt know how to process.

Goddamn, I cried like toddler. That shit was tremendously sad, probably the saddest anime scene I've watched in quite some time. And then just as I was getting ready to type this all out I was reading comments in the thread that pointed out the reason Takako died is because she went back for that laptop and it started getting me choked up again since I didnt put that together when watching the episode.

That scene at the end was just too real. Madhouse didnt pull a single fucking punch there. Just seeing over a thousand emails pop up knowing she never got a single one of them, and then Shirase just completely breaking down with everyone else breaking down outside her room.

Fuuuuck, that scene was honestly so brutally sad because of how emotionally real it was portrayed, I'm honestly not sure I could even watch it again if I decided to re-watch the show. I mean that shit made me fucking cry; not choked up, not misty-eyed, not a single manly tear, not even just a few seconds of water works. I bawled my fucking eyes out to the point you'd think someone just murdered my family.

It's so fucking funny that two of the most tear jerking episodes of the season showed a mother leaving messages behind and a daughter trying to reach her mother via messages.

Too bad it ain't Mother's Day yet, but this could be a good way to marathon the hell out of these anime during that time.

Wow, this one posited from 4chan:

Just a little bit of subtle storytelling:
The three girls "letting go" of the balloon, together, have had their arcs resolved. The balloon represents the emotional baggage that weighed on them before their trip to Antarctica.
Only Shirase wasn't there to let go of the balloon. They even explicitly say at this point "Shirase didn't come, did she?"

This shot of the sky, clear, blue, and empty, is later echoed in the final shot of the episode, as the sky gradually darkens (evoking Shirase's anguish) yet just in the end, as the night grows darker, the darkness reveals the myriad stars lighting it, like as many balloons.

i was fairly sure it would stop around that many emails regardless, considering my assumption was that Shirase sent an email a day since her mother's death.

-are we getting a shirase arc
-yeah just a little chilly
-never change, mari
-huh they're literally peeling onions
-🔥 🔥 🔥
-yuzuki's actually pretty adorable
-i never would have thought that a money counting thing could be that emotional
-that banner's cute
-uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
-also this is more how i envisioned/anticipated the antarctic stuff to be going
-like, this blizzard is pretty legitimately terrifying, although...
-well it's been a while since the show has dropped blatant death flags, and that late night talk with mari certainly qualifies
-sounds like shirase found it within her to finally finish that email
-also this montage is just super characteristic of the OP
-no
-oh god no
-that was so much worse than i was expecting
-i was completely convinced that every time they showed shirase's phone screen that it was the same email that she couldn't bring herself to write
-but i definitely wasn't ready for that

Alright now that I'm completely caught up to everything, I can finally post that the reason I decided to drop what I was doing before and catch up on Yorimoi was entirely because I heard that someone died. My stupid ass thought they meant one of the main cast died which is honestly something that i've been anticipating for the entire running time of the show so far, but I was promptly proven wrong in this episode. In terms of main characters dying, I am still totally convinced that it's still a possibility at this point, with Mari dropping all those death flags in that one conversation with Shirase. Although, I will say that a main character death having this late in the series seems so out of nowhere that it's probably better to just continue playing things straight, like they have with the past 3 episodes. I actually am really impressed at the impact of the last 3 episodes in and of themselves, because by now, the majority of the other anime-original shows I've seen with strong beginnings (including Flip Flappers, Princess Principal, and Samurai Flamenco) just tend to fall off a cliff in terms of quality toward the end. I'm really glad a show like this didn't fall to the same fate given how much I legitimately enjoyed it overall.

And now that I'm done metaranting about the show so far, I'll write about why two scenes in particular made this episode what it was, although by the size of this topic, there's bound to be someone who's already wrote about both of these. First things first, the one scene with Shirase counting her money was like super unexpectedly impactful, and if there's anything that I absolutely love seeing, it's when seemingly mundane things have a certain spin to them that completely changes the underlying meaning. In particular, the fact that she not only took on so many jobs to save enough money to go on the trip, but also still vividly remembered every single odd job she did was pretty powerful. Even more so once I realized that she seemed to be doing it to try to convince herself to try and go everyone else to where her mom died. That was just a lovely scene overall.

The other big scene, which I'm sure other people have commented on, was of course the one of Shirase seeing all the unsent emails pile on in. This caught me completely off-guard because I thought, for the entire show, that Shirase's just been working on a singular email for all the years after learning of her mother going missing and most likely dying. That made Shirase's little narration to her mom during the montage seem pretty sweet and melancholic, because I thought that after all this time she never could get that email finished until she went on a journey with everyone else to Antarctica. Turns out, however, she did find it within herself. Multiple times, in fact. It was only in the process of writing this that I recall in an earlier episode they mentioned Takako died 3 years prior to present day, and since Shirase sent at least 1101 emails that ended up going unread, that amounts to just around one email per day. Man, the first time around I saw the email scene it knocked me down, but now that I've realized that Shirase's been sending emails pretty much every single day since the incident, that fucking destroyed me. Especially since Shirase seemed not to resist the idea that her mom actually was dead (to me, at least).

This episode just had elements of all the good aspects of the show thus far, including lighthearted moments during the montage and moments of friendship sprinkled out throughout the episode. On top of all this, it managed to include two super powerful scenes that have been being built up to for pretty much the entirety of the show. The constant one-uppery between episodes 10-12 was just great overall, because episode 10 was just lovely on its own and each of the following episodes just managed to be even better. I'm super excited for the last episode to wrap everything up. I might have been a little apprehensive with my excitement for the show for previous episodes, but I have full trust that they can close this out in the right way.

I'm pretty sure that in the future, people will bring up this anime in any discussion of the best-written anime series ever. The writing in this series has been impeccable. Really realistic and in-depth characters, nuanced responses to emotional situations... there's so much about this show that I adore. It's crazy to think that this season has so many hits, this being one of them. There's nothing that hasn't already been said about this episode in the thread really. The only thing I can think of is "where do you go from here?", and my only thinking is that the finale will deescalate and still be emotional and impactful but not so much. You can't just be more intense from here.

It's hard to imagine a better show that could possibly come out in 2018, in my opinion.

Wow.

Did anyone else feel like in Shirase's place you would have picked up the laptop and hurled it across the room? That's what I felt like I would have done. I'm not sure why, but that was my reaction when i saw all those messages popping. Frustration at the futility, I guess. I'm glad Shirase was able to reach the more nobler plateau: closure.

Lol, don't mind me, when I come across an anime I know will be my all-time favorite, I would scour the whole anime community for infodumps and would get into the lore of it a bit too much. Also I wouldn't mind you throwing that laptop for us, coz I'd be peeling onions in a corner and in the process of experiencing a BSOD at the same time so I can't help much.

Just to make it clear, the emails didn't bounce back as the other user said. Those emails were all the emails that were showing up in Shirase's mother's inbox that remained in the server and was waiting for the connection from the intended recipient (her mother's email account) and started delivering as soon as the network connection got established.

Well, there are those who watch the anime raw even though they don't understand what's going on because they don't know Japanese, edit them after re-watching the episode in English subtitles or reading comments from other users yet STILL get it wrong.

Wow I bawled at that ending. The whole episode seemed like it was building towards something different. A sort of subversion of the tear jerking, heart on sleeve fare the series has done so well until now. Where not everything will get the big dramatic reaction you might expect it to in movies and TV. Would have been an interesting route to go in it's own right. But that last three minutes ripped my heart and fed it back to me. The journey has been well worth it what a climax. I'm sure the finale will be fantastic too. But after that 10/10 episode it doesn't even need to be.

When they found that laptop I was a mess on my couch. Then she actually starts looking through it.... it was a wrap. Took me about 5 minutes to recover.

just one more ep. but I'm pretty confident in the 10 I'll give this show once its all done.

I am emotionally destroyed
“I love heroes, but I don't want to be one. Do you even know what a hero is!? For example, you have some meat. Pirates will feast on the meat, but the hero will distribute it among the people! I want to eat the meat!” - Monkey D. Luffy

Almost inch perfect, but closer to least favorite episode, personal terms.
I feel disappointed and frustrated, why can't I enjoy this as much as everyone, why can't I feel anything? I wanna feel sad too.
Not that I can't vibe to tearjerker scenes, I liked VE EP10 a lot. But then why.
Will think about the reasons again next episode.

Back to the main plot we go. The reason why we are here.
Her mom didn't see a single one of those emails.

Now copy the drive contents while that thing still works!

Good episode but not as emotional as I thought it would be, maybe because it was stating the obvious in the end. Shirase-chan just had to accept it. I also wasn't fan of other girls forcefully pushing her to search cry just for the sake of drama but well... And somehow I felt like they manage to get there maybe way too easily.

The scene with the emails in the end was still very good though (not that notebook would be still operatable at that point but I doubt people still care about the logic now). PW of her comp set to her birthday was nice detail and the ending song went great with the mood. Shame two previous episodes were so bad.

Now I wonder how this ends, twist or not some kind of closure is still needed.
