I am sure the vast majority was expecting the ending of the episode. I can't really think of anyone else she could have written the letters to, so we can say it was really expectable. but..!

The way the story was delivered was so amazing, it made me tear up. The little girl getting the letters year after year... The love her mother gave her was almost out of this world.

I especially loved when Violet got home, and she started explaining: "I had to hold back my tears the entire time I was in that mansion", and starts crying.
I'm glad Violet's character grew so much.

I'd say, one of the morals of this series is that even people whose character became really grotesque due to their upbringing, can be fixed by showing them love, caring, and attention, and them experiencing, and witnessing good, emotional things. I really want to believe that it works the same way in real life too.

Probably my favourite episode.

This is such a very emotional episode, glad that Violet can hold her tears while she was in the mansion but Mann.....I can't hold mine.....

I saw it coming, Anne's mother is dying and she will be left all alone, it got even sadder when the letters Violet wrote was for Anne in the next 50 years

I'm laughing so hard at the people calling it cheap. Completely missing the point of this episode.

It was meant to be a contrast to the old Violet. A better comparison is Oscar's story.

I really liked this episode with how it handled this topic and how well the impact of the topic was conveyed, and it definitely made me a little misty-eyed. Violet being mistaken for a doll until the end also carried a lot of meaning to me as well, as it paralleled her development from regarding herself as a tool of war into a fully fledged human being with empathy, love, and other emotions, with her arms serving as a reminder to us that she will have to carry the weight of her previous actions with her, even as she develops as a human.

I am curious as to where they will take the series from here still, and how they will end it, as the previous episode felt like a conclusion to Violet's character arc, and this episode didn't really set up a specific goal she is working towards. I am excited to find out though!

At first i didnt really know what to think of this episode, since the previous arc was so great. At first ann seemed to be obnoxious. So i didnt realy had high hopes for this one. But when the scene where she lashed out on her mom began i just couldnt help and get all emotional. And although it was kinda predictable that the letters where for ann, they deliverd it just so amazingly that i couldnt help but shed a tear, damn this anime just never fails to blow me away

Everyone here is so cheap oh my! "This is beautiful! This is so emotional! Give me A BREAK. It has been so for the last 9 episodes as well. The only worthy part of this episode was the "I was holding my tears". The rest is your usual tragic flavour to make some adolescents teary. This is going in circles, and unless they start doing actual art soon there will be no worth to it. Except for making youth cry, alright.

I really doubt you haven't seen one anime where a single character just ruins the enitre experience (Like Subaru in Re:Zero, or Yukki in Mirai Nikki), this is the case here, it isn't just annoying but there isn't enough time for me to develop some empathy to be even sad for her. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Feels bad man

I think it's more naturally realistic story because she is "annoying". I mean that make her more childish as a child right? A childish girl want her mother attention. I'm myself don't like Ann's personality, yet I know beyond there is something and if she isn't this naturally annoying, may be it's not going to be an emotional episode.

If you watch this anime, there is one rule you should remember, the formula is what people show isn't what define people. Sometimes they're lying, sometimes they just don't know how to show their emotion. And this eps show one childish girl innocently show her emotion and it's easy to guess what her feeling and be empathy. I thinkk if if you failed to develope empathy for her, maybe you just forget this formula.

And for Re:Zero, if Subaru isn't kuzu with social anxiety disorder, it's going to be no different than isekai smartphone or death march. His weak personality tried to struggle all suffering is make this story precious.

It was easy to realise Ann's mother was ill, and then I too realised that she's telling Violet to write letters for her. When I realised that, it was like I got hit by a truck. This episode was so emotional and I had to force myself to not cry lol. Maybe it's because my mother died at a young age too.. so I kinda understood what was Ann feeling. This may be one of the best episodes.

IkoiTsukishiro said:
I think that Violet Evergarden has made use of every episode in a formulaic way, with episode 9 being the episode where Violet moves on with life, now that she realizes that Gilbert (is likely) dead. This episode was wonderfully placed as being the next episode, since Violet now understands how deep parental love can be (due to episode 7 with the man and his daughter, and her own experience with Gilbert, understanding how hard it is for the one who’s left behind, now that she’s been developed and understands these emotions in both perspectives with if the parent is left behind, or child, as someone who knew nothing about love, to someone who knew what love was). It works very well as the episode after episode 9 also, because Violet can finally take into consideration how her feelings and the feelings of her client can come together to form something beautiful, since she now understands what those feelings they hold dear are.

Violet wouldn’t have been as considerate towards the girl if this had been placed before her development in episode 9. Violet wouldn’t have shed those tears nor felt such a burdening sense of sorrow if this had been placed before her development in episode 9. Because this was placed after, it was such a realistic way of creating subtle emotional values of Violet and her actions towards everyone, and her views of them herself.

I’m quite curious on where they plan to go on from this point of. I was hoping episodes would get stronger and stronger after her development in episode 9, and 10 definitely was a great episode and definitely was a well-placed episode, and was also logically placed. I’m not sure where the next logical place would be to explore in the story of Violet Evergarden.

Whatever it is, this episode definitely made this my anime of the season (and possibly year as a new anime, since this is the year of sequels).

I’m actually very surprised with this quality, since I imagine that most of the (episode) directors would be busy on the 2 new Hibike! Euphonium films, Free Season 3, Tsurune, and a possible new title/adaption in development behind all of that. But KyoAni and the staff who worked on this episode delivered very pleasantly well. I was also very happy with the choice to use the 2nd verse of the ending song to end the episode, since it’s more light-hearted with the instruments used in the background, and the bridge is personally my favorite part of the song.

That's what I thought. I have been critical about the earlier episodes but now the anime looks one of the best directed anime and I am not just saying for this season. It's probably one of the best directed anime to come out in recent years. All the complains of pacing issue and not working with the original contents can have some well deserved rest now. Violet's development as a character has been tremendous and it has been handled the best way possible. What we are witnessing now is sort of like an After Story.

I pointed out that the reason why episode 9 was called "Violet Evergarden" because it marked the completion of her character and a key point in the story.

I have had a bit of doubts because of Ishidate Taichi being the director as I wasn't really a big fan of him handling Kyoukai no Kanata but I have to say he just owned Winter 2018.

Anne is one of the most beautifully created child characters that truly shows how a child's mind works and how a child acts. Remember when she said her mother doesn't like bugs so she would hold back from that but in the final segments with her mom, she picks up a bug and runs towards her mom making her mom scared. It was a child being unable to contain what it wants to do!

At the same time she is intelligent enough to understand that those who visited her sick mom were truly after the mansion and not to see her mom which made her despise guests. She also realized that the time with her mom was coming to an end. And that's why she was such an obedient girl from the start, not wanting to make her mom worry. But in the end, she made her mom cry which broke her heart only for Violet to mend it.

Small things that add up to how beautifully a story can be told. One really has to pay constant attention to this anime. Every single second has a meaning in VE, that's how well crafted the episodes are.

Thought I would add another screencap from this amazing episode. Anne pulling on Violet's sleeves to make her sit so that she could kiss her was so cute!

Side note: Anne's surname is Magnolia, yet another flower's name has been used in this anime.

I really thought Sora yori or Yuru Camp will come on top because of the consistency but the level VE reached in the latter episodes has far surpassed any competition in my book. THIS IS THE ANIME OF THE SEASON for me. The year is still young but I think it will definitely be in contention for my ANIME OF THE YEAR. I still think 3-gatsu no Lion S2 is the standout ongoing anime right now but VE is not very far behind at this moment. Who knows what we have in store with the remaining four episodes.

As for KyoAni having their hands full, alongside the titles you have mentioned, they also worked on Chuunibyou Take On Me during the initial production stage of VE. Also, Hibike! Euphonium Todoketai Melody is not entirely a recap movie. There is 20 minutes worth of new content in a 100 min long movie. That's basically a new episode merged into the recap. And we have to consider the fact that Hibike is one of the most resource heavy anime to come out in recent years. So, those 20 minutes worth of new contents are probably equivalent to 3-4 normal anime episodes of a regular TV anime because the difference in details that Hibike has compared to any normal TV anime is simply extraordinary.

Da yo ne.. there is people who annoyed with her childish personality. I mean it's naturally realistic.

The onion ninjas are out in force again, like with last week's powerful episode. It was easy to predict where the direction of the episode was going when the mother was struggling with her illness, but the whole presentation was almost flawless.

Yes, Anne was annoying at times, but most kids are like that. Heck, I was a bit annoying myself when I was the same age as her. ^^;

Still, it was sad to see Anne breaking down crying in front of Violet as she was coming to terms of her mother's terminal illness. Then her mother's letters was read as she grew up with the timeskip, while the ending song continued into its second verse after where it usually ends during the normal ED length, and the feels went into overdrive.

I couldn't help but shed tears during the whole letter segment, but it only got more emotional when Violet broke down herself. The feels were so strong. T_T

Excellent episode once again. =)

Its emotional and got me.
But still, i doesnt hold my tear or crying, i rather happy to see the scene of Ann growing up.

BEAUTIFUL, MAGNIFICENT AND GREAT STORY!!! It just shows how a parent would care and watch for their child even when they are gone...

*Doll playing Doll is 🤣🤣🤣. As anne has said to Violet!!!

*while watching this episode i am really thinking that the letter Violet making is for their relative to take care for her once she (mother ) is dead already or its either last will of testament. But its beyond that i even didnt even come to my mind--- a letter to anne to the future!!! Upon realizing it i am so impressed and like this story. One of my favorites!!!

* i would like parents and children to watch this episode as for sure they are gonna be touch by this one (like me)!!! 🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒

You don't seem to understand my point. She might have been annoying but what really ruins the experience is that EVERY SINGLE STORY in Violet Evergarden has been Rushed, there has been only 1 episode for each story (with the exception of Violet's mental breakdown that has been the only good thing about this anime)

So this time, I stuck with her being annoying and couldn't feel any sad for her. Its not her behavior at all, but the lack of development her character has. There are very few anime out there that manages to make a great and emotional story in one episode (See Osomatsu San season 2, Ep 18. That's one of the best episodes I've seen and its completely emotional)

As for Re:Zero, Subaru redeemed himself by noticing how stupid he was. There are more things about it I would like to talk but I would be getting outside of topic.

Now, don't go telling me that "This anime isn't for me" if you are going to answer me with it. Because there is one anime that completely overshadows this anime, and it succeeds it greatly. Mahoutsukai no Yome is like the other face of the coin. It is another anime that guide's the main character through mini story arcs that are so well done and they took around 1 to 3 episodes for their stories. Violet in the other hand, only uses 1 episode for their stories (with the exception of the last 3 episodes that were great) and that's why it backfires. Let's not forget, that Violet's stories are more generic than the ones shown in Mahoutsukai no Yome.

On another less emotionaly raped note: why sis this episode even air now?? I doesnt seem to fit in with the plot and story started the last couple of weeks. It would fit more like an OVA than anything in my opinion.

How? How does just one episode make me this sad and happy at the same time? New side characters are introduced and the character development begins. After just one half of the episode I'm already holding back and towards the end, I was tasting my own tears. Literally, because I smiled right after tears flowing down :D

I can't help but give this Anime a 10/10. What would even hold me back at this point? I'm in love with basically everything about this Anime. For me, I felt like if it ended by the last episode it would already have been a great anime but to have 4 more episodes to come is just great. Very hyped for the next one:D

After the flashback episodes, of which I wasn't a big fan of, came episode 10, an absolute gem that restored my faith in the series. Of course, it was obvious from minute 1 who the letters were for, but it was such an emotional journey, and Ann was adorable, also her relationship with Violet and her childish honesty.

I broke when Violet broke, she has come such a long way from being an autistic robot to actually being a well-rounded individual capable of feeling empathy.

Probably my favorite episode so far.

At the very end I want them to go through the flashbacks of all of the people she wrote letters for and at the very end we see violet as an old lady delivering the 50th letter. As violet hands Anne the final letter, violet's sleeve and glove part just enough for Anne to notice her metal arms. A grin begins to form on Anne's face as she reaches into her pocket to hand Violet a letter labeled, "Violet Evergarden".

I don't expect this to happen but I would still love to see it.

This episode gave the impression that Anne grew up by herself. Think about it, her maid was already elderly. This makes it all the more sad.
