And seeing Violet cry as well was.. well I felt something ;_;

Crap crap crap crap crap... To say I shit myself is a humongous understatement. Although I kinda knew what would happen it was still so painful to watch. WUZZAHEK. WHY. WHYYYYY OKA-SAN NOOO

Great to see Violet back to normal (if Violet crying is normal...). God knows what will happen in the next eps. This reminded me a lot about the other motherly love episode as well. And that ending once again, damn strong. 5/5 and 10/10. Violet Evergarden has yet to go down even one score down from 10 from the first episode (although I think I gave it a 9 in the first episode and the 10 streak continued from ep 2 but still noteworthy).

Guess the rest of the season will be episodic stories. No biggie.

Please don't trip...and you trip...Sure is a lot of crying in this episode...

Really...REALLY? She wrote 40+ letters to be sent to Anne on her birthdays? How the hell did she come up with all of that? And how the hell was she able to predict exactly how Anne would grow at each age? That's some next level foresight right there...

Just to add to the surprise, in the LN, she even sends gifts every single birthday. And one of them's a car at her 16th birthday.

A car? What the hell....wait, where'd she (the mom) get the money to buy a car? She must have been pretty wealthy and must have given Violet or someone access to her secret stash or something to get Anne her gifts. But I guess it's thanks to that wealth that Anne was (seemingly) able to live a happy life as well as being able to afford to write 40+ letters. Then again...Anne looked like she was working as a maid or cleaner...Oh never mind. Those letters were great enough as a gift to her.

You know...when Anne reached her 50th birthday or so, even if it may be a bit much, I kind of would have liked to have seen Violet deliver the 50th letter to her personally. BAM! FEELS TO THE MAX!

The Magnolia family are quite a rich family. But after Anne's mother got married to Anne's father they faced a difficult financial situation. Basically, in the anime they say that Anne's father is dead but in the novel he wasn't. He lost all his money due to alcohol and gambling and didn't even go to war I think. So he had to borrow money from the Magnolias and sold a lot of valuable objects in the house.

He rarely visited Anne and her mother, and ever since Anne's mother got ill he never came except for her funeral. Anne hated him and he's the main reason why she hates "guests".

I don't know why Anne was shown cleaning...

"Ann opened a law counseling office at home after graduating. She did not earn much, but she no longer had maids, so it was about enough for her to sustain herself. She was also in the middle of a small love affair with a young entrepreneur who often came for counseling."

I'm guessing that was just part time work.

Every episode of Violet Evergarden have always made me almost teary-eyed, but this episode caught me off guard. I literally have to pause it from time to time to prevent my tears from coming down. Tsk. The only anime that made me like this so far was Clannad Afterstory, and it was also a product of KyoAni. Dammit KyoAni, you managed to soften my heart of stone not once, but twice.

That was one incredibly emotional episode. Ann's mother couldn't have left her any more wonderful parting gift. I already saw everything coming yet I couldn't hold back my tears throughout the second half of episode. I thought I had cried enough in this anime already but boy I was wrong. T_T

Violet's effort truly became timeless. I was wondering if Violet went back to being emotionless but she was actually holding everything in for the sake of Ann and her mother. And everything poured out once she completed her duty. T_T

I will be honest here. The series is now really testing my resolve of holding back from giving this anime a 10/10.

I was exactly like Violet here....omg....I was trying to hold back on my emotions during most of the episode, but when Violet broke down in tears because she had to hold back her emotions during that entire time with the girl's family, I could no longer hold back my own tears....I consider myself a manly man, but god damn, I broke down :(
Not even the likes of stuff like Anohana or Plastic Memories hit me that hard with emotions.
damn thats cray anohana hit me like a train at the ending scene and ohh man this was a great eps im so glad its keeping up pacing and getting better <3

Great twist near the end. It was obvious that the lady was going to die soon, but what bugged me till the ending was to whom did she write the letters for, and the answer was really satisfying. Violet's tears didn't feel forced either. 4/5

Yes! They've adapted Chapter 2! This one probably has the best ending out of all chapters imo. Although it was a bit predictable, I really liked the mom's massive efforts to write the numerous letters for her daughter to be seen after her death.

There were some minor differences, for example Ann didn't run away in the novel, but I think it was a good addition since it showed how much she cares for her mother.

I think they made Ann a bit more childish in the anime, but I'm happy they didn't go over the top.

Also VE's score seems to be going up again, last time I checked it was 8.39, now it's 8.41.

As the episode was ending with Ann getting letters I just started crying, but when I saw the 50 letters and Violet's crying I was balling.

Can't vote 10 out of 5.

Glad I didn't get the keyboard wet so I can type this.

I think that Violet Evergarden has made use of every episode in a formulaic way, with episode 9 being the episode where Violet moves on with life, now that she realizes that Gilbert (is likely) dead. This episode was wonderfully placed as being the next episode, since Violet now understands how deep parental love can be (due to episode 7 with the man and his daughter, and her own experience with Gilbert, understanding how hard it is for the one who’s left behind, now that she’s been developed and understands these emotions in both perspectives with if the parent is left behind, or child, as someone who knew nothing about love, to someone who knew what love was). It works very well as the episode after episode 9 also, because Violet can finally take into consideration how her feelings and the feelings of her client can come together to form something beautiful, since she now understands what those feelings they hold dear are.

Violet wouldn’t have been as considerate towards the girl if this had been placed before her development in episode 9. Violet wouldn’t have shed those tears nor felt such a burdening sense of sorrow if this had been placed before her development in episode 9. Because this was placed after, it was such a realistic way of creating subtle emotional values of Violet and her actions towards everyone, and her views of them herself.

I’m quite curious on where they plan to go on from this point of. I was hoping episodes would get stronger and stronger after her development in episode 9, and 10 definitely was a great episode and definitely was a well-placed episode, and was also logically placed. I’m not sure where the next logical place would be to explore in the story of Violet Evergarden.

Whatever it is, this episode definitely made this my anime of the season (and possibly year as a new anime, since this is the year of sequels).

I’m actually very surprised with this quality, since I imagine that most of the (episode) directors would be busy on the 2 new Hibike! Euphonium films, Free Season 3, Tsurune, and a possible new title/adaption in development behind all of that. But KyoAni and the staff who worked on this episode delivered very pleasantly well. I was also very happy with the choice to use the 2nd verse of the ending song to end the episode, since it’s more light-hearted with the instruments used in the background, and the bridge is personally my favorite part of the song.

That's what I thought. I have been critical about the earlier episodes but now the anime looks one of the best directed anime and I am not just saying for this season. It's probably one of the best directed anime to come out in recent years. All the complains of pacing issue and not working with the original contents can have some well deserved rest now. Violet's development as a character has been tremendous and it has been handled the best way possible. What we are witnessing now is sort of like an After Story.

I pointed out that the reason why episode 9 was called "Violet Evergarden" because it marked the completion of her character and a key point in the story.

I have had a bit of doubts because of Ishidate Taichi being the director as I wasn't really a big fan of him handling Kyoukai no Kanata but I have to say he just owned Winter 2018.

Anne is one of the most beautifully created child characters that truly shows how a child's mind works and how a child acts. Remember when she said her mother doesn't like bugs so she would hold back from that but in the final segments with her mom, she picks up a bug and runs towards her mom making her mom scared. It was a child being unable to contain what it wants to do!

At the same time she is intelligent enough to understand that those who visited her sick mom were truly after the mansion and not to see her mom which made her despise guests. She also realized that the time with her mom was coming to an end. And that's why she was such an obedient girl from the start, not wanting to make her mom worry. But in the end, she made her mom cry which broke her heart only for Violet to mend it.

Small things that add up to how beautifully a story can be told. One really has to pay constant attention to this anime. Every single second has a meaning in VE, that's how well crafted the episodes are.

Thought I would add another screencap from this amazing episode. Anne pulling on Violet's sleeves to make her sit so that she could kiss her was so cute!

Side note: Anne's surname is Magnolia, yet another flower's name has been used in this anime.

I really thought Sora yori or Yuru Camp will come on top because of the consistency but the level VE reached in the latter episodes has far surpassed any competition in my book. THIS IS THE ANIME OF THE SEASON for me. The year is still young but I think it will definitely be in contention for my ANIME OF THE YEAR. I still think 3-gatsu no Lion S2 is the standout ongoing anime right now but VE is not very far behind at this moment. Who knows what we have in store with the remaining four episodes.

As for KyoAni having their hands full, alongside the titles you have mentioned, they also worked on Chuunibyou Take On Me during the initial production stage of VE. Also, Hibike! Euphonium Todoketai Melody is not entirely a recap movie. There is 20 minutes worth of new content in a 100 min long movie. That's basically a new episode merged into the recap. And we have to consider the fact that Hibike is one of the most resource heavy anime to come out in recent years. So, those 20 minutes worth of new contents are probably equivalent to 3-4 normal anime episodes of a regular TV anime because the difference in details that Hibike has compared to any normal TV anime is simply extraordinary.

Another great episode! I was really afraid when I saw that Ichidate would direct the show (because of Kyoukai no Kanata) and the first episodes, except Luculia's, weren't really interesting or especially moving according to me. But since episode 6 with Leon's story, the show is getting really good. Even with the changes, I'm impressed by how they managed to convey the novel's feelings (and even better for Oscar and Ann stories).

It's just sad that because of the time they used for fillers and the Gilbert dead / not dead thing, some importants parts aren't shown. Hodgins, Gilbert, Dietfriet aren't well portrayed since their characters are more complex in the novel. And we don't get to see Benedict that much so I hope they'll adapt Silene's chapter.

I definitely want KyoAni to adapt Aiden and Silene chapters. Same for Lux although a lot of people are saying it wouldn't be fitting. It would be good to see Edward too since he's the main "antagonist" but there aren't many episode left for all of them plus the flying letters and the train hijack chapters.

This episode was an emotional rollercoaster, on that makes an entire series worth watching... In itself it was a cut above anohana as well as PLASMEMO though in ways remained on par with shigatsu wa Kimi no uso (your lie in April?)
My initial reaction to this though was that it would be further character development in terms of Violet learning more about herself, why?

That was parallel to Violet's history as a weapon -being treated as an object rather a sentient beings (look at me using big words😅😅)

But then it left that scenario and instead built up this inevitability of death and separation and Anne went further by coaxing the embers with well placed logic when she appropriately said that she knows her mom was going to leave her and all she wanted was to relish these fleeting moments.

I cried, yes I cried, the one who thought of this story is a god; built a dystopian world where people -so futuristically- can have automail (subtle nod to FMA) arms, yet remaining so primitive (not the best word, I know. But it describes the situation) that there has not been advancements made medically.

The animation blended beautifully with the story as can be seen with simple frames objectifying loneliness

P.S.
Me being me, I found the worst in this frame as well; who on earth would leave a child alone like that

This Mother-Daughter relationship was heart-breaking, that scene of Ann arguing in that situation in the Winter Garden.

I don't know how to feel about this episode. On one hand, the setup was powerful and emotional, the acting hit me right in the feels and all. On the other, however, I could see the plot twist since miles away, basically as soon as I added "lady receives guests while sitting in bed" and "ojou-sama isn't allowed to be present while lady writes her letters" together, and that did weaken the letters' emotional impact quite a bit.
Yet these hands will never hold anything.
Thus I pray, Unlimited Waifu Works!

Writing the letters for her daughter's future birthdays caught me off guard. I thought that they were meant for caring, education and other important stuff. So the moment Anne received the first letter had quite an emotional impact on me. I also liked Anne's characterization. She acted naturally childish especially when she blamed herself for her mother's illness. But in my opinion more time would have been better to build a stronger connection with Anne. You got to know her, understood her character and when you started to sympathize with her the episode was already over.
Sadly, the story itself was as cliché as the series' other one-shot episodes and didn't offer anything unpredictable. Because of that and too little time I wasn't emotionally involved until the final scenes.

I took it more as something either part time work until her business got really going nice and steady. As theres no way you maintain her house and property cleaning or working at a simple shop. - I think the other changes were more so to give emphasis to the relationship of the mother and daughter and remove a detracto (And of course the now Mother and Daughter moment as the finale); and give more emphasis to violet.

Me during the majority of this episode: Huh, it's just another side story again? I mean, I would've preferred seeing more of Violet's growth, but whatever.

Me during the last 5 minutes: nope noPE NOPE NOPE I TAKE THAT BACK FUCK HERE COME THE WATERWORKS

Seriously, this show really knows how to build on seemingly inconsequential material and make it feel meaningful at the end. Episode 9 made the time spent on side stories earlier on carry real emotional weight, and now this episode did the same thing in a self-contained fashion. KyoAni really hit this one out of the park, and I can't wait to see how it ends.

So emotional episode. A child longing for a longer time with her mother, but then guests takes away her mother's time from her, honestly can't find her annoying, more like I pitied her due to this circumstances. Can't really take the other's annoyances on the kid seriously.

Violet holding back her tears. This episode really resonated to me. Gj!. Kyoani

Glad to realize that I still have a heart, thanks to this. Definitely a favorite.
I just realized that all of my favorite characters, beside being stunningly beautiful, also happen to be exceptionally skilled murder machines. \('-')/
