Honestly speaking Ecchan is pretty twisted herself and I'm a bit surprised that noone is mentioning that in here. Probably just got overshadowed by Akane and all that lewd because unless I misunderstood that yuri-scene she was also completely exploiting and manipulating Hanabi in that situation. That also felt horrible, but in contrast to the teacher felt right to me.

//edit LOL and just as I mention it someone else mentions Ecchan. Those ninja's//
What do you mean? It's not like Ecchan raped Hanabi, it was just Hanabi accepting her feelings as a friend she cares about, right?

Great episode.

Akane is a bitch using men & hurting Hanabi like that.

Woah that yuri love. Hanabi & Ecchan finding comfort, but it doesn't feel right.
Everything is getting complicated.

I mean, not really surprised for Akane, got a little bit spoiled about her
But even Ecchan is pretty much using Hanabi for her while she can.

Poor Kanai, seems like hes the only one normal (so far) in this shitstorm.

LOL the MAL crowd is more receptive to Akane's personality than other sites haha
although I root for Hanabi in most of her relationship endeavors, Akane is definitely my favorite of the scum. I have no problem with her sleeping around, but I just hope she learns to be less manipulative and hurtful about it. Though I doubt that'll happen lol

What do you mean? We got a full on yuri scene with actual lust, how can you not be happy?!
I mean is it really that bad that Ecchan is hurling herself onto Hanabi forcefully to sate her sexual desire, while Hanabi is just taking it as to care for Ecchan as well as distract herself for letting Akane get close to her Onii-chan before her. It's fine, right?

Here we see this is named "Scum's Wish" for a reason.

The teacher however is fairly unbelieveable for me as she's just portrayed as some comic-like villain rather than an actual person of her own. Maybe we're going to get some explanation for this but so far I just can't take her seriously like this...

I think that depends on what your knowledge entails about real life people and their desires. I know 2 people that totally share some traits with Akane and thinking about what desires and fetishes humans are actually able to develop, romantic exploitation is not too far off. Some people simply have the desire to mess with others, they want to feel superior and the only way the can get this kick is through what their "abilities" allow. Akane is a visually stunning woman and she plays with her feminine charm that entangles people into her trap. This is how she expressed her superiority and this is what gives her life.

For other people it's success in your job, friendship, hobby, certain "products" or a pure long lasting relationship. There are morally acceptable and morally questionable things that fulfill you in life and well Akane certainly goes into the more twisted territory. Of course the anime takes all of that and exaggerates it but this part of fiction and even more so anime. So for me she totally fits into this series whose name is totally in line with what and who she is.

I agree. I know some very beautiful women with quite a lot of these similarities, they are addicted to this behavior and need this form of "attention" and "love" from other men, just because that's the only way for them to feel like they are "worth living". Don't underestimate the brain, it can get addicted to almost anything, also getting addicted to love to feel good about themselves, and to ignore / run away from certain problems in life. This behavior is certainly qualified as being an "addiction" just like being an alcoholic or drug addict is. Very unhealthy behavior, and very hard to recognize for the person itself. Yes this woman acts like a total biatch and bad person, but mannnn am I looking forward to seeing what happened to her for her to become this personality. I expect a really interesting background story. Although it only has 12 episodes. Damnnnnn

I'm almost surprised how generally constructive the discussion has been so far :) ... honestly, I expected a sea of flames right now.

Ysad_Ziwezhan/Toadesstern: Keep in mind that this anime has the habit to first introduce a character in a surprising/shocking way, people then complain about this character being "unrealistic", and then they are fleshed out with many more details afterwards. This will be particularly true for Akane, who I consider the second most important character in the show after Hanabi.

Also, I suggest to keep a very close eye on what truly moves Akane. Is it really lust? Or is it something different? I suggest you rewatch her scenes, because ep4 handles her very well.

This is also why Hanabi is actually wrong: She is _not_ like Akane, no matter what she believes. Her "evil inner child" (which was a fantastic scene that gave me goosebumps) channeling her self-denigration says so, but think about it: For what reason did Hanabi and Akane do what they did? Are they really the same?

From afar, akane could be real :
_ a woman sleeping with men one after the other : possible.
_ a girl targeting a boy because of another girl : possible.
_ a girl bullying another girl because of jealousy : possible
_ an adult behaving like a child : possible

it's just the way the mangaka presented the whole package didn't convince me.

Is what ecchan says in that scene bad from a series-pov? No I think I've been quite clear that I didn't mind that.
Is it bad from a human pov? Most certainly. She's manipulating and abusing Hanabi's inability to act. That's an awful thing to do. But people sometimes do awful things so I'm totally okay with that from a storytelling pov

Good animation, Good OST, Great Story premises with a compelling story so far, Deep characters that evolve.

This got me hooked so fast that I, every week, am watching and listening carefully and attentive every bit of the episode without losing focus from begging to end.
This might be one of my favorite romance dramas, that I've watch so far if the anime keeps this pace until the end. Hell this is one of the better Dramas I've seen in the past few years.

Ysad_Ziwezhan: I thought that the episode was fairly clear... shows that even with a lot of inner-voice exposition, there's still enough to puzzle together.

In short: Primarily, Akane is not a slut, but a sadist. She isn't really driven by lust - she was almost disinterested when Terauchi took her again in the morning. We know that she enjoys to be desired. Having people pine over her and wanting her is making her smile. But what is _really_ getting her off is when she is taking what others desire. She orchestrated Hanabi and Narumi to meet in the music room at the same time in order to see Hanabi's hurt face. She was getting in Hanabi's face explicitly to see her jealousy and desperation. And in the end, she even taunted her to this effect:

"I'm not really sure, but my guess is that since he has no chance with the person he pines for, he's just filling the void with some accessible classmate."

Which is about the meanest and cruelest thing that anyone could say, both denigrating and taunting Hanabi at the same time.

On another forum, someone referred to Akane's inner voice quote "I can't really tell how good someone is unless someone says they are" as an admission that she is a bad judge of character. Nothing could be further away from the truth - in fact, Akane has exceptional social and observational skills. After all, she picked up Hanabi's, Mugi's and even Moca's desires with one look. No, what this quote meant in context was something different: First, she needs to hear/see that someone _really_ wants someone else, and _then_ she moves in to take him away (and destroy the one she robs in the process). When she sees a girl wanting a boy, this lights a desire in Akane to steal the boy away in order to see the desperation in the face of the girl.

Try to rewatch the key scenes from this perspective. She is no slut driven by lust, who wants to posess popular men for herself. She is a sadist, who loves taking away men from other girls, in order to see them hurt.

Spot on with Akane, as a reader of a manga her character really shines, and as dislikeable as she is, she is still my favourite character!

OT: Brialliant episode, though I think they toned down the lewd stuff in the hotel as compared to the manga, but like someone mentioned, 23 minutes flew by in mere seconds.

Excellent episode as always, with great mood and several godly moments. Really great direction here.

I really like Akane as a character, she really brings great contrast to main heroine. Well, I didn't like the ending where she licked her lips (I think that was pretty much needless to emphasize the meaning of that scene) but other that that this episode was great and it hold many truths that are normally hidden in minds of lovers in relationships, including pushy Ecchan and Akane's background..

Your obvious conclusion would be that the teacher is the worst kind of scum but in the end, everyone just wants their heart's desire whatever it is.
Everyone is simply filling their void in the best way they can.

Still, the main heroine is at least conscious of it as it's not something she would accepted just yet and her pure and noble struggle is just great sight to behold. That's just the one thing Akane is wrong with her assumptions of Hanabi's character, she's not the same as her, her motives are completely different.

Also, one has to simply love the ending moment when teacher let her know that she is desired by two men while Hanabi is loved by none, such a great contrast.

Also, another thing of note - the part when Ecchan says about wanting no matter what the feels of others are is just so true and on spot with real world. That part resonates with me strongly as I believe everyone has such desires when they're in love, no matter if they are saying that's not true. It's kinda funny thing as most people takes love as something noble while it is, in fact, no such thing.

Yes, it's a harsh truth but the desire or should I say love is just a mere selfish feeling.

People are always thinking of their own good in the first place when the love is concerned, even if that good is made of their own sacrifices for others. And even if they are giving, they are just doing that for their selfish desires, for their own fullfilment.

And this was maybe the first anime I've seen that had shown it right.

Hoooooooly shit.

That woman is a massive bitch.

It's kinda sad that that woman is behind so many of the characters' grief.

I'm also not sure I like the fact that she's such an obvious piece of shit... part of the reason I really liked this anime at the start was because I felt like it was about normal people being caught in tragic situations... when in this case it's mainly this one bitch that's just destroying everyone's love life...

Suddenly there's an obvious bad guy... so yeah... I liked the previous sense of ambiguity. No one was evil, just unfortunate... and that was fascinating to watch... but yeah... I'm tired and repeating myself. Bye.

yeah overall not a fan of her. And not because I don't like her, you're obviously not supposed to like her but she feels way to cliché evil character to be taken seriously for me.
Sad when so far for me the strong point of the series and why I loved it so far has always been that the characters are way more relatable and made you think they're actual characters (if you take the melodrama setting for granted) than most other romance shows.

Agreed. binge read the manga a while ago and man the story really goes to shit.

I absolutely love how Akane doesn't even try to give some sort of "sad" motivation or tries to excuse her actions, she is not trying to justify herself at all, she owns her shit "I'm a narcissist, probably also some kind of psychopath, I want to hurt you and I fucking will, okay?". She is my favourite character in the manga and the anime, she is the only one that never lies to herself and stays true to her nature, my second fav is Hanabi because of how she evolves and the way she thinks, the way she is fully aware of herself and what she is doing.

I loved this episode and hope they continue to do such a great job with the rest of the anime! Also, lol, those feeling bad for Kanai... Don't worry too much about him.
