It makes sense if you understand basic English. "Try hard" means that it lacks subtlety. Rather than gradually establish the story or characters, it drops a load of exposition on the viewer. This may be great for people with short attention spans, but this doesn't work for everyone. And "mess" means that it is incoherent. The first episode started with some ambiguous underwater scene, followed by an otaku describing his blog, an overly flamboyant dude rambling about something, and some girl jumping and cheering with big bouncing tits. Therefore, Occultic;Nine, to me, is a try hard mess. If you like it, that's perfectly fine. I don't. |

Unlike Steins;Gate, it didn't really draw me in though. I've told myself I'll give it the three episode chance before I drop it. The boobs are irritating...I must admit. Who agrees with me? I agree. I like boobs as much as any guy, but this is too much. And more importantly, if the series turns out to be good it is going to be really difficult to recommend it to other people due to those bazongas. I'm crossing my fingers for the plot to be good. I was promised Steins;Gate 0 this year and got none :'C I need my S;G fix I'll do my best to ignore those tatas in my assessment of the series. Gotta be objective. Come on, man, you know this girl had to be bullied a lot because of her gigantic boobs. It must be why she is flapping them around so much, to dedramatize her situation, because not taking yourself too seriously stops people from bullying you. I know something about that. For different reasons, it's also a sign that the show doesn't take itself too seriously, which is a trait that is also maintained by the overall ironic tone of the episode. The shameless boobs are not the problem here. The problem is that people want to understand everything at episode 1. Not only that, but even people that want to understand by episode 3 will probably leave. Just like Robotic;Notes, which was awesome in my opinion, the show is meant to keep the real plot a mystery until very late in the series. It was only a few episodes before the end that the stakes were revealed. The main characters were mostly in the dark all along. The viewers too. You also have to understand that if people complain about the dialogue being so fast that they can't read the subtitles, it should not be something to blame the show for. Just wait for the English dub if you can't read fast. This show was made for people who speak Japanese. Also, Occultic;Nine is NOT Steins;Gate, so don't expect the same kind of story... Actually, yes, but only in a broad sense. There will be major differences. In the end, I just don't care if it's underrated. My favourite movie of 2016 so far is Swiss Army Man, and it sits at 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, about the same as O;9 here on MAL. The reason: one of the main characters is a magic dead body with propelling farts. About as absurd as giant tits. Maybe more. |

TitanAnteus said: Recommend to people? Why would you do that? This is anime. You can't even recommend Ano Hana to non-anime viewers, and all that has is Pokemon and one girl with moderate boobs. Were you really expecting an anime that's primary focus was the occult and mysteries surrounding it to target the mainstream mindset? The only reason Steins:Gate even tried was because the main idea came from an actual internet event. The only other anime that had occult ideas like Occult Academy are also non-recommendable to normal people John Titor was an actual user on an internet imageboard. Did I ever said I'd recommend it to non-anime viewers? That's irrelevant, though. I know a good bunch of people who are into occult kind of stories but are not much into anime, though they are eager to try some series. If you have a good story (possibly the case with this series) then the medium becomes irrelevant. Also, I wouldn't say occult and mystery is not mainstream. IF they use it for character development then I will be pleasantly surprised. But the genre and the story is what drew my in, and that's what I really care about, so I hope it turns out to be good. The only thing I'm really worried about is the studio in charge of it. |

Bst222 said: TitanAnteus said: Bst222 said: TitanAnteus said: Bst222 said: I was just really confused, I don't understand what the story is about at all. He's just a weeb who owns a website and gets helped by 2 girls. Who after going for an interview finds a dead person. That's all it is to me. Nice clickbait tittle though! :) Wasn't trying to make it a clickbait though XD. Yeah, our protagonist so far is a guy that runs a website that puts together information from other sites and makes it easier to read. He's interested in occult stuff so he simplifies other bloggers works on disproving widely known occult myths. The big boobed girl is some girl he met one day and their weirdness synced with each other and they've been friends since. I'm not sure if the zapper gun is real or if he's just faking pain whenever she points it at him but they are a strange pair. There's also a sideplot with a person who actually curses people using their hair as a catalyst. It looks like she might have a demon on her side, but the demon is disgusted by the smell of a rotting scalp so I'm not sure if it's even the one that commits the horrible acts she says happens when she curses someone. There's a scientist that doesn't like to dismiss the occult because while science can't prove it, they can't disprove it either. He's murdered, and the murder instrument is some strange knife? It looks like a ritual dagger and the protagonist touched it so he might have fingerprints on it implicating him in the murder or it might throw him into the world of the real occult. Who knows. The girl in school that the protagonist kinda digs can see the future. She makes predictions and she thinks that in order to move forward with her life she needs to be near the protagonist. She shows no romantic interest in him, and it's dubious whether she can actually see the future or not so far. Anyways, off the top of my head, that's what I remember happening in the episode. Thanks for explaining it to me, it gives me a more in depth look at the story so far but it still brings up so mich unanswered questions which could end up being good or it could just be the beginning of the end for this show. Anyway did you read the Ln? Nope. Though if they really did condense around an entire volume in one episode, I might do that later. Also, I didn't even mention the reporter, the scientist's son, the mysterious kid who seems to be an acquaintance of the scientist and the intrigue of the old lady that lives at the scientist's house. Keep me updated! Wait there was a reporter? Didn't see the acquaintance either nor an old lady.. I did see a pop star, a transgender and a weird girl with an umbrella don't know if they have any relevance to the story though. Ok not reporter but columnist. I can't exactly tell what her occupation was, but she seems to really believe in occult stuff. The scene where the guy says he went to meet the scientist but got greeted by an old lady? She says it might've been the ghost of his mother and honestly believes it. The acquaintance walks by the house with an air of understanding. Basically he probably knew the scientist was going to die that night. There was no pop star. The popular girl on TV is a fortune teller. The transgender's probably just a flamboyant gay dude. I don't think he's relevant yet. Seems like he's there for comedic relief and outsider insight. It feels like i've been watching something completely different.. Thanks for the extra information though. |

There is no proof for this, but i feel they cancelled the LN so they could work full time on the game and the anime. I know once that game is fully released I will be playing it and hope it explains some more context that the anime. I still have faith in the show and I understood what it was trying to do in episode one. Adapting 1 whole volume did make it go really fast, however when you only have 2 volumes of source materials would it not be better to get that out the way first then proceed with the 'original' story or if they recieved any guidance from the author follow that until the VN is made to give the true ending.. thats all they really can do for now. |

Nah, the boobs weren't the issue. They certainly didn't help the overall picture I got, but I highly doubt I could enjoy this show if it stays the way it presented itself in the frst episode. I really like first episodes that take risks and don't start on a classic going-to-school-routine or something of the kind. Some fantastic Anime out there, like Baccano or even Steins;Gate, have sort of confusing first episodes, for some this is exactly the point. However, starting the episode off with some interesting imagery and an atmospheric OP, the episode then decided to drop into an insane exposition dump from some high-pitched Yuki Kaji character at double speed. His relationhip to boob girl comes across as blatant insert-fuel. The animation and designs caught my attention quite nicely, but it didn't feel like it fit the show. Overall... I got the impression, that this show was less focused on telling a weird, quirky story more than just presenting it as such. The pacing was not the problem in itself, but the Anime didn't need to be this rushed. It had no purpose. It just tried to be another Baccano by borrowing some, but ignoring many other elements that made that first episode so great. While Baccano switched to short moments to introduce some of its massive cast of characters, this show more or less just shoves them into the audiences' faces. Their personalities didn't seem interesting either, just forcibly quirky. TL;DR I dropped it because the many creative choices displayed in the first episode didn't make much sense. |

Their personalities didn't seem interesting either, just forcibly quirky. TL;DR I dropped it because the many creative choices displayed in the first episode didn't make much sense. Well these are the kind of comments I kind of wanted to see in the episode 1 discussion. While I disagree with most of what you said, at least you have a reason. What I disagreed with: Yes, they went through a LOT of information in the first episode. They don't have much time, most likely 12 episodes so this is what we got. They tried to take the ridiculous amount of content they have and made it digestible and I'd be lying if I said I didn't understand what was going on. If you came out of the show thinking to yourself, that was hard but I get what they did, then isn't that fine? While there was a lot, it was easy to digest and follow for the most part. I understood the plot after watching it. Also, you can't say the whether or not the show being so fast paced at episode 1 has no purpose yet. For me, I think getting to the impetus of the show. The event that leads into the occult by episode1 is a sensible decision. Who knows what's in store for us in the future. Also you're telling me that Baccano's characters were NOT forcibly quirky? When you have a large cast of characters you give those characters some quirks to differentiate themselves from one another. Even still, the characters weren't as ridiculously exuberrant as some of Baccano's cast. Yes they're quirky, but they're more importantly distinct. The glasses newspaper lady only showed up for like 2 minutes but I remember her and her personality for instance. The big boobed chick I feel is the most quirky character so far, and that's just because we have no idea why she acts the way she does. GermanMGirl said: I agree!!! Ok. So can someone please explain to me this whole recommendation thing. So the clothed girl with big boobs is the main reason you can't recommend this right? This is some of the tamest fanservice, if it's even that, I've ever seen in anime. Knights of Sidonia has more cringy scenes than this. I don't get it. If this is hard to recommend it must be because of the plot, and there's nothing wrong with it other than you need to give it your attention and not suck at reading. |

I think I sorta understand where these guys are coming from. Magi did this thing with its first episode as well where Aladdin loves fondling boobs which put off a lot of viewers and the annoying part is that there's not even that much fanservice at all in the later episodes (it's pretty much non-existent in the manga by now), they only added it for comedic purposes and as a way to better remember Aladdin since it was the first episode. I have personal experience with the recommendations thing because even though the anime becomes great later on, when I recommended this to some friends they were put off by Aladdin and so they decided not to continue it, it was really nonsensical and it annoyed me since Magi is my most favorite anime. |

Lol yeah I know that Magi feel. Magi's worse though cause he literally jumps and fondles up girls. This is just visually stimulating I guess. Lol whatever, those people are prudish people anyway. There's tons of experiences I want to share with people that I CAN'T just because it has a little adult material. Like for instance, I'd love to share experiences like Junketsu No Maria with friends but they'll get stuck at the succubus character and completely miss the point of the show. I can't recommend Gantz to people because of the girl who committed suicide appearing naked in the room and almost getting raped. Anime RARELY goes for mainstream appeal, and by mainstream appeal I mean recommendable to your average viewer. Don't even try most of the time. Steins;Gate, FMA and Silver Spoon are some of the rare gems where it's possible and they have mature stories. |

I really think it's a perspective thing, tbh. I mean, the characters the NEET (Yuta) sees are over the top in everything, the girl is super eccentric (and well endowed), the guy is super feminine and his idol is the perfect depiction of innocence. All of his scenes are also very colorful. Compare that to the scene where the serious school kid is in, the attention is shifted towards minor irritations and the coloring is much "down to earth". For instance, the TV program that is airing with his dad on it, the airheaded girl was super irritating and the fact that we paid attention to the program is because he paid attention to it. And then there is the scene of the office lady, where that exact same program is simply running in the background and nobody pays a lot of attention to it. This time there is a lot more nuance on facial expressions. I really think that the big boob thing is just a perspective thing and that, once all the characters meet, she'll still have large melons (as it must have a basis in something) but i doubt they'll remain this big forever. EDIT: Forgot to add in the scene of the witch girl. I think that the woman that came to see her is actually a highschool girl but from the perspective of a girl, she could appear older. I mean, most adults would not act like that unless they truly belong in an sanitarium. And then there is the blood, the blood is the first thing you notice when Yuuta finds the body, but when the witch girl finds the scalp in her mailbox, the blood is something secondary. All of this leads me to believe that it's just a matter of perspective, but then again, it's only the first episode! |

So MC wants to expose him as a wacko. He gets to his place and he finds the prof's stuff showing him to be an occult wacko and gets really excited. He sees what he thinks is a sacrifice knife and gets super excited and plays with it. Or maybe it's just because it's dark that he doesn't notice the blood on it and thinks it's just a knife to play with? |

Lol, if huge tits offended me so much, I'd have to avoid like...95% of all anime/manga out there. While her boobs ARE bordering on grotesque, that was not the main reason for my dislike of the 1st episode. I actually found the two main characters incredibly annoying and one-dimensional. Not to mention way too loud and chipper and, well, not too fond of that either lol. The pacing was like watching Durarara on crack and I actually liked Durarara. This was a bit too much. Too many various scenes flashing one after the other with different characters that it was pretty hard to follow. For someone who has no idea about the series (manga, LN, whatever it is), it was all over the place. Now, I did say in my post that it had some interesting scenes and the ending was interesting enough for me to give this a few more episodes before I drop it if it keeps on being like this. Boobs or no. And lol, the rating is 6.66 at the time of writing this post! xDD |

In this case, I wasn't using 'confusing' as a derogatory term but as a compliment. The 'idiots' with short attention spans who only want a predictable linear plot would obviously find such an anime bad and drop it after the first episode, while any sensible person who wants a 'well crafted story' would accept the initial confusing plot as a good point. Of course, I'm not saying all confusing non-linear plot anime are good since a lot of them never reach a real conclusion or have open/vague endings which I hope O;N doesn't turn out to be. |

But Is interesting but I havent heard anyone talk about the LN itself only that they heard it skip 400+ pages, I know you must compare both mediums separtly but for the sake of discussion looks more like people that hate it havent read or heard about the LN before and cant focus on critizing the actual adaptation and story itself. Not to mention we are on the First episode. |

I'd rather watch Flip Flappers, tbh. The anime poster sold me so I included it in my PTW list, but then a gigantic oppai surprised me on the first episode, so yeah. I dropped it. That ridiculous breast was too much. Occltic; Nine isn't even hentai nor ecchi to begin with so wth? |

I'm also wondering why, sure the boobs irritated me a little but to be honest I'm quite interested by the premise of the show since it's about the occult and of course mystery is one of my favorite genres |

The girl's fully clothed all the time and she's not even the focus of the series. OuFerrat said: I'm dropping for two reasons: 1) They talk too fast but say nothing 2)The characters are disproportionate. I don't mind big boobs but they have to follow a certain proportion. At this poin it's just bad art You honestly think the art in this show's bad? Really? |

Actually I quite liked this first episode. It was intriguing enough to keep my interest, it has a quite large and varied cast of characters who don't follow standard tropes too much, the dialogue and plot are not too bad and the art is pretty nice. All in all, it is certainly different enough than most of the other showings this season. Also, it has some similarities to Steins;Gate with a group of characters participating in some obscure activity and the main cast giving each other weird nicknames. Of course, it has some problems, such as the main character being somewhat annoying and hyperactive and the pacing feeling too rushed at the moment, so it is by no means perfect or even outstanding. Nevertheless, so far the show is much better than most of the others this season has to offer. As for the boobs, I did not think they were that bad. I thought they looked quite nicely on her when she was naked in the ending sequence due to the fluid animation sequence. Then again, I'm a big breast lover so I am sort of biased ;) |

Boobs are the reason why I didn't pick up this anime. |

You can find grossly oversized boobs gross and not be an SJW btw. I'm actively anti-SJW and found them horrendous, for example. Probably going to give the show the three episode rule and see how it is then. It was the show I was looking forward to most (aside from Haikyuu), and it was a massive let down so far. |

On one hand it's good for hentai. Even though their disproportionate I'll leave it up to their artists. On the other I feel like I'm being baited by this to watch it with the tits. That's not enough of a reason for me to continue a show especially when the show just feels so awkward, amped up and annoying. Pretty much what Re Zero would've been without the suffering and several more Subaru. The music and colors seems to convey the typical hyped up high-schooners as opposed to the more melodramatic ones. I'm assuming the constant screaming and yelling were meant to be funny and channel more of that hyped up post FLCL shit we see every one in a while. Art style isn't really a bother, even the udders don't bother me, the thing that would bother me is constantly pushing them in front of everything including the plot as a means of enticing me. Like I stated elsewhere I got the same vibe with the chick from Basquash and Phantom world, last year, with Miyuki and Mai, respectably. Just feels like a cheap early episode trick some studios use more by introducing one or more of the female cast with boobs that look like the have their own field of gravity. In short big boobs aren't annoying but when you try to make your plot more relevant by shoving them in front of everything else and doing tricks at random times I can't help but feel irritated. Things like Keijo and Valkyrie Drive get passes because that's pretty much what they do. This feels more like a kid who stores packets of soy sauce in his blazer at Sunday church to piss everyone off. I probably am a tad hypocritical since I still may watch it for the big boobs but more so for GIFs etc. One more thing which remains to be confirmed they're at vol.2 now and vol.3 I heard has been cancelled. So...umm... |

They're the same retards that complain Kill la Kill is disgusting, without seeing the show's main metaphor |

I don't know where the Science comes in. There's a demon? A dead body and weird occult shit happening though. |

I mean, the show starts off with a 3 minutes long exposition/narration scene, then there's an obvious comic relief trans dude that shows up which probably only makes Japanese people laugh, and then comes the deformed character chirping about like a 2 year old... there's only so much a man can take. Wilhelmina said: Nah it's just that this site is full of idiots. Yeah because people with different opinions are obviously idiots. "Wtf boobs" Yeah, like this is the only non H anime which featured big boobs. That doesn't make it any better. |

It has supernatural stuff to and 1st ep is intruding the main duo and setting up a mass murder mystery conspiracy. It's okay. TitanAnteus said: I haven't seen any Sci-Fi. Just don't drop the show because one character has big boobs. Like... that's such a stupid reason. It's like the rest of the show doesn't matter. I mean if her character's really that bothersome to you, I guess it makes sense to drop it, but I'll have you know that Steins;Gate starts off almost the exact same minus the trans dude. Honestly, is she really that bad. She's an energetic and positive person that's a good influence on the protagonist making him get off his ass and do things. Also, it's the trans guy's restaurant, and while he may be flamboyant, none of the characters rag on him. They all generally respect him. He even tries to show them about the mysterious occult curse lady. |

What'd they do besides exist? Is it really that distracting? Also is it really enough to get triggered, drop a show and rate it a 5 or lower at episode 1? |
