Personally, I initially did not appreciate the public display of affection between my gay best friend and his (now ex) boyfriend. But as you are constantly exposed it, you eventually develop an immunity...Though I look away to avoid ruining the atmosphere

[What I've learnt from being the designated 'third wheel']

Why put yourself in that position if it makes you uncomforable?

You see my deal is that if I'm disgusted by something I try and stay away from it. That is to say, there are exceptions. Like if I witnessed a couple popping a ring for each other, or if it was an anniversary or something. But if it's just random acts of intimacy I'd probably look away, because that feeling of disgust wells up in me if I look at it.

Are there that many of those kinds of people? I often see people go "how can you not like homosexual romance?" more often than people saying "ughh get your gay stuff out of here." Although I could just be selectively remembering things.

I don't purposely place myself in this uncomfortable situations... I just happen to be there as a sort of 'safety net' for newer couples (either that or they love putting me in awkward situations)

What people say depend on many factors...

Coming from a conservative Asian family, they tend to look down upon homosexuals but as I grew up in London, even people of the same age group have diverse opinions on the matter. Some good, some bad.

But most of the time people don't really care/mind as much these days due to media exposure and changing attitudes.

I think its perfectly fine for a girl to like yuri i have a few friends that like both yaoi and yuri. To me as a guy I don't mind watching either as long as it doesn't end up too explicit. But I watch anime to be impressed by a good story-line not for the explicit side of it. And love comes in all forms not just male and female relationships. But I'm straight.

Just so you know.
In the yuri world, there is no dichotomy like yaoi/bara.

Among the yuri mangaka, you find both lesbian an bisexual women. For example Jin Takemiya says in her afterwords that she bases her stories from her own experiences. And Akiko Morishima is openly bisexual. Hell, even the first major yuri writer, Nobuko Yoshiya, was lesbian.

And by taking the only survey available keeping the sexuality of the Japanese yuri readers, the poll said:
1st demographic: heterosexual men
2nd demographic: non-heterosexual women (thus lesbian, bisexual, et cætera)
3rd demographic: heterosexual women

And globally, there were a little more women than men.

BTW:
There is gay men who happen to prefer yaoi over bara. Because the bara genre is as stereotyped than the yaoi genre.
And the majority of bara seems to be porn, with few romances.

Incidentally, the border between yaoi/bara is sometime blurred, with some mangaka doing both (because yes, there is women mangaka writing bara). And during the 80s, June (a yaoi magazine) re-published works published earlier in Barazoku (a bara magazine).
I won't speak about Keiko Takemiya, one of the first yaoi mangaka, who was an avid reader of Barazoku for having inspirations.

Well, it depends on the environment you're also in, I guess? Sometimes, I hear both of those sentences. Thankfully, I think I'm in the good part of the crowd because I more often hear the first question asked in a light way. I have a friend that is openly liking porn and stuff, she's a straight female, and she likes joking about lesbian stuff. But when she sees gay stuff, she immediately goes "ew". So it all depends.... or something.

Because they are too lazy for bothering to even check the introduction of the Wikipedia article?
Or they are too arrogant for thinking that their own little personal experience or their own reasoning is representative of anything?

Dunno.
Anyway, I stopped to expect that anyone being somewhat decently documented on the subject of yuri/yaoi/et cætera, even the "fans".

I myself only like it if the story/dialogue is really interesting, or if they are only the subtext. Personally I like strong and warm-hearting female bond/friendship, like in shoujo, magical girl or CGDCT shows, but I just don't really enjoy when it has too much physical touches like Sakura Trick, or when it has too many fanservices like Yuri Kuma Arashi, and KLK (the last one I think is also because the jokes just aren't my cup of tea).

Source : I am a woman

Yes. I like yuri / shoujo-ai, especially if it's written and/or drawn by women. Why? Diversity and representation aside, here's the reason why I love yuri:

1. I like to see relationship between two women. Google "Top 10 anime best friends" and you can guess most of them are man-man friendship. Bromance they say. No to mention in shonen or shoujo most girls are either rival to win a guy attention.
Google best anime romance and most of them are straight. Relationship between two women, whatever platonic or romantic is very few and undermined. I like friends became lovers trope.

2. Don't conform gender norm. If you look at het romance, most of them like this. Guy meet girl. Guy save the girl several times. Girl fall in love. Beside Attack on Titan, I rarely see where the girl is stronger / taller / richer / smarter than the guy. Even if the girl is strong somehow the weak male lead manage to be stronger than her at the end of series and beat her ass. I like to see girl protect another another girl please. And girl support another girl like in magical girl show.

YURI IS DA BOMB DIGGITY!! hawthawthawt SIGN ME THE FUCKITYUP.

ahem.

I don't really like to go by labels anymore on my sexuality anymore (since labels are suchh a big deal nowadays), but I do see myself having a relationship with a male or female. But that's not the case. Like others have said, you could be a straight girl and enjoy yuri. Heck, you could be a lesbian who's into yaoi. Who knows? I mean romance is cute; no matter what gender it's between in my opinion. But I like looking at girlxgirl relationships a lot compared to straight or yaoi relationships. I just find yuri fluffier and cuter...

I got lots of yuri ships I wanna keep adding 'em up.

It would be awkward unless u have known those friends close enough...why would anyone admit watching yuri especially a female friend you are chatting with...its more comfortable to chat about the opposite gender or should i say....some ppl are super duper sensitivity about this sort of stuff.....plus honestly dont want to be call bi or gay just for solely reading over a manga for entertainment or some interesting storyline that im digging in which 100% of the time it wont appear in straight manga sadly.

hihihihihihihihi

me yes me

I'm kinda gay though, so.. not quite what this thread was looking for.

but daym, I love yuri/shoujo-ai because of how gentle (at least it usually is) things play out. they aren't usually forced, and they.. well, capture femininity in a tingling lovey-way that'll give heartaches for days.

I watch this stuff, and the end/acts make me feel as if I need something similar in my life too (just not torture, I'm not quite sure how many yuri variations there could be, so still focusing on the main lovey-dovey style)

I would like to say that I couldn't read the OP in this state of the night, so.. sorry if I'm completely off-topic here.

No, I don't think those girls are into that. Shoujo Ai means being sexually attractyed (with platonic love or NOT) toward little girls. It's not two girls loving each other, but gown up liking under-aged girls. And by grown up I don't especially mean women grown up. And shounen Ai is the same for under-aged boys. Some peoples here including DataYutaka already notified MAL's moderators of that huge mistake being made, but it wasn't changed in the database. Well whatever.

No matter the stance of MAL, peoples on western boards should be really careful with those terms lol. If you say to a japanese that you're into shoujo ai, this will NOT mean what you think it does. Do not complain if they look at you with disgust...

@ImmatureCookie @EssentialTeacup
Maybe you should read what I just wrote above as well.

I think you're confusing the phrases "shoujo ai" and "shounen ai" with "lolicon" and "shotacon". "Shoujo ai" literally translates as "girl love", which doesn't really mean much. I think it's actually an abbreviated version of "shoujo no ai", which would translate as "girls' love". When speaking in English, for some reason a lot of people are uncomfortable, at least from my observations, mentioning GL (in the context of anime/manga, generally), so they phrase it in Japanese instead, but "shoujo no ai" sounds somewhat awkward when speaking primarily English.

I personally enjoy any sort of romance that doesn't conform to the more generic and overused stereotypes, cliches, and tropes. However, I also like watching anime or reading manga about strong platonic relationships. What's really annoying for me is when one character is obviously attracted to another for the entire series while they remain friends. That's just as bad as the "prince in shining armor" crap, I think. Platonic or romantic, both are good, but not half one and half the other.

Therefore, I consider that I am not 'hardcore' enough to be called an Otaku as of this moment. Though that might change again in the foreseeable future.
