Can you really learn enough Japanese from Anime?

I've seen quite a few people say they can understand anime without subtitles after ~2 years of watching subbed anime. Is this true? And is it really enough to say this 100%?

I guess it depends on how much you watch, but still seems a little far fetched. Though, I guess it makes some sense due to the way anime is scripted, like overused phrases, which I've memorized.

I learned a few words from watching hundreds of animes but I doubt anyone can learn enough to watch animes without subtitle and understand most of it.

you will understand words and phrases just by associating the words with the subs

but you probably won't get very deep with grammar and less common words

No. No you can't. Especially if your older than 13. You'll pick up single words when used on their own like "nigero" - "run/escape", "gommenasai" - '"i'm sorry", etc. But it'll be next to impossible to pick up the meaning of a whole sentence just naturally like that.

It'll help practice and reinforce listening/comprehension if you're actively studying it via other means.

Watching it will definitely help you get used to listening to Japanese and you'll have an easier time pronouncing Japanese words.

This is all though, no one can absorb a language through passive means alone.

Welp, I can atleast count in Japanese xD and some basic words and sentences linger.. but to actually communicate in Japanese you'd probably have to do alot more than just learn from anime xD

Yeah I wasn't even considering writing/reading, just understanding and pronunciation.

No. I think the most you could ever achieve is knowing when the subs are wrong, but still needing them to be able to sit down and watch an anime.

Unless you watch the most generic anime in existence repeatedly, there are just way to many variables to consider.

No. Hell no.

I feel bad for the poor souls for who have to learn Kanji. If you need an organization which adds and reduces the number of characters in your "alphabet" nearly every year.. you are doing something wrong.. really... really.. really wrong... I'll keep my 26 english letters.. you can keep your 3 'alphabets' and over 2000 characters.

kanji is not an alphabet, but an logographic system, similar to egyptian hieroglyphs

and hiragana and katakana are similar to lower case and upper case latin alphabet

You'll pick up a few words, phrases, and perhaps a few verbs. Learning sentence structure and reading kanji are the hardest parts, requiring study outside of passively watching anime or listening to music. I think anime helps best with listening and pronunciation skills, and should always be paired with extensive study.

But it can help you get used to the language. Learning Japanese is easier when you watch a lot of anime.

I can vouch for this. Thanks to watching hundreds of anime, I can comprehend the gist of what’s being said in an anime (that isn’t dialogue-heavy) without reading the subtitles. However, I know absolutely nothing about Japanese grammar, characters, etc.

Yeah you can learn some stuff. But that's only if you try to pay attention. You will be able to understand but nor really speak.
After all these years I can pretty much watch any average slice of life/shoujo/kids anime (because they usually use simple language) without subtitles and understand almost everything.

Though Japanese used in anime are quite different than actual japanese. If you want to learn the actual language and writing you should take lessnns

No. All you'll be able to pick up is a bunch of words and scripted lines that nobody uses in real life, and that will only result in you getting called out for acting like the dumb & impolite gaijin that you are.

If you plan on talking to actual japanese people, then take lessons. However, if you're already taking lessons, then watching animu without subtitles or reading raw manga can be a good exercice.

I met two persons whom I would consider being able to do so.
Given, they'd probably also go and get themselves a dictionary and a "grammar book", and glance at both only once, but nevertheless, these two were both able to pick up languages ever so easily - very, very impressive. (and I am actually not bad at languages myself, but nowhere near them two.)

It also depends on what OP meant with "emough Japanese".

Duskfall said:

you learn languages differently as a child. Not the structured, "school/lessons-way" you'd typically employ as a later teenager or adult.
Personally I always missed that un-structured way of learning foreign languages as additional element in them structured learning courses.

Y'know, if you want to smartass, at least put correct information. That there is not a suitable comparison. A syllabary is not an alphabet.

Sure you can learn a few words, and sayings, but learning the language entirely? No, you cant. That's what classes, teachers, and other sources are for.

You’ve got a point, but the OP specified he was talking about anime comprehension and not IRL comprehension.

Wtf. How does naturally learning the words in a language from watching cartoons in said language make you a weeb? That term is grossly misused.

I'm currently taking Japanese classes in college and I've been watching sub for about 2 years now. The only big thing that watching sub anime has helped me with is phonetics. Besides that, it's really only a few phrases/words.

3 writing styles total, only hiragana and katakana are alphabets; kanji are characters

Hiragana is for japanese words, katakana is mainly for foreign words. There is no uppercase or lowercase in japanese (unless you count the smaller letters in glides as "lowercase", but I don't think that's really a thing)

Watching subs of anime doesn't teach you syntax.

It doesn't teach you much vocabulary.

It doesn't teach you grammar.

Will you know all the different verb conjugations from anime? No.

Will you know the -on and -kun readings of kanji? No.

Will you learn anything from watching anime subs? Honestly, without studying grammar and syntax, while increasing your vocabulary it won't.

It helps you to pick up certain words here and there, and a little bit with how sentences are structured in the language but if you want to full grasp the language you need to study outside of just watching subbed anime, obviously. But it is a good place to start, I suppose.

No,you can't learn more than several words, phrases and sentences just by watching anime.

However if you do enough research on the grammar structure and verb conjugations you might just learn enough Japanese ro actually survive in Japan.
After 1+ years of watching anime and extensive research I can carry out a conversation decently enough and can also read and.write hiragana.
But it also depends on how well you can grasp languages. I am also proficient in French and German so learning languages is easy for me..

not sure what is "enough Japanese", but don't expect anime to be of much use when learning the language. i know some people go to Japan knowing 0 Japanese and they still manage to survive by using gps and google translate (for translating single words)
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.
