Dear MAL users,
I'm curious, is there anyone among you bilingual/multilingual? What language do you think in? Do you switch languages mid-sentence? Do you have problems translating some words?

I am simultaneous bilingual - I speak Bulgarian and Russian since I was 2 years old. I studied English and German in school and now I am majoring in Chinese. Usually when I'm translating something, I use every language I know, because most of the time I forget some words and I just can't explain myself. It's really frustrating, but still, I like being bilingual ^^

I speak Norwegian, Neo-Norwegian and English. I can understand written German to some extent and I can perfectly understand both Swedish and Danish.

I always think in Norwegian, because it's the language I am most proficient at and I usually translate from Norwegian to English, both when I write and speak. While talking English and thinking in Norwegian means that I have to translate in my head as the conversation goes, so I end up using a lot of shitty filler words such as "Like and you know" to stall the conversation in order to finish my translations.

It's hard to translate sometimes, because words change meaning when translated and sometimes there are words in Norwegian that just straight-up doesn't exist in English, so I have to find ways to circumvent that by using alternative and tedious explanations of what I want to convey instead of just using the word that explains it.

Swedish is my first language, but I find myself thinking mostly in English. I'm bilingual between the two (or consider myself to be at least), and I even dare say that I'm better at English than I am at Swedish. Translating used to be a problem, now it's just when I'm tired and get some brainfart. Certain words you just don't get the translation for straight away, and it makes you (at least me) feel dumb when you finally get the translation.

If I have to prove myself academically for my proficiency in English, I took the CCAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English). I want to take the CCPE, but it's pretty pricey.

Depends on what I speak more of during the day. When I'm in China, for example, I start thinking in Mandarin after a week or so. Otherwise, I think in English.

Rarely switch mid-sentence.

And yeah, certain words or phrases are very, very hard to translate, especially ones with cultural or historical roots.

Javanese, Indonesian and English are my languages. Supposedly it's supposed to be in that order, but I find myself speaking much more fluently in Indonesian and English rather than Javanese.

In addition I learned Japanese in high school.

Learning Dutch at the moment.

I tend to think in English and sometimes in Japanese, occasionally in Indonesian.

I speak Japanese to my interpal friends.

I speak English and Spanish. We have a bilingual household, but we speak far more English than Spanish in the house anyway. I lived in his country from 18-22, so there were some things that I use in Spanish only because I had just never seen or dealt with them before learning the terms there (eg; aguacate, platano, and repello in place of avocado, plantain and... not even sure of the English).

I know tidbits of some other languages. I could once converse in French, but I can't get too much farther than the basics now, and I can only remember fragments of the other languages I've studied.

I had 1 friend who constantly flipped mid sentence between English, Spanish, and Slovak. She just could NOT keep them straight even though she spoke them all fluently. It was kind of entertaining and she wouldn't realize she was doing it unless someone would point it out.

I wish I was a polyglot but bilingual would be acceptable. I am tired of only knowing one language. I was raised in an area where there was not anyone speaking other languages than English and they did not teach other languages standard in school so I had no early exposure.

I find it fascinating that some people will think different thoughts in different languages. It would be interesting to know if that was due to what you've learned of each language or a feature of the languages themselves.

I know that English borrows a few words from French (impasse) and German (schadenfreude), so I suppose it never had equivalents. I wonder if using a phrase in place of a word counts though. A 'psychological roadblock in dialogue' and 'a derivation of joy from another's misfortune' are both English thoughts.

I barely use German so my progress is going slowly.
In my free time I think in English 90% of the time (except when I'm swearing) but when I'm with my parents or in school I think in Hungarian.
I imagine the same scenarios in two ways; in one the characters speak English, and in the other they speak Hungarian.

I'm simultaneous bilingual as well – I speak Swedish and French since birth, although I have a larger Swedish vocabulary because most of my education was taught in that language

English isn't my native tongue but I'd say my skills are relatively high even if I've only studied the language for three years (being Swedish and French really helps here)

Apart from that I know some basic Italian, understand Norwegian and Danish to a certain extent (they're extremely closely related to Swedish, kind of like Slovakian and Czech) and I am studying a few other languages as well

I usually think in Swedish but when I think about e.g. yaoi it's always in English – I don't know why, it's just some kind of reflex. And last but not least, I prefer to swear in French because Swedish swear words are way too sissy in my opinion

Yeah, the title is a bit misleading.

I can speak Russian, which is my native language, and English, to some extent. Sadly, it's hard to get practice in a monolingual society. At school I studied Spanish, but I never became fluent (I can understand some bits and pieces). During the course of my life I've learnt basics of French, German, Bulgarian. Nothing held for long without practice though. I'd like to update the German or Spanish first, I think.

I think in Russian, but huge exposure to passive English morphs some thoughts into poor imitations of English phrases.

It's quite a common misconception for people to mix up between linguistics and polyglot. Kinda makes me wonder why did my uni decided that linguistics and translation are put together as one major.

Anyway, back on the subject. I speak both Arabic and English, though I mainly think in the latter. I'm suppose to speak 3 languages but my mom never taught me Tagalog. I do switch between languages since I can't express myself that well in Arabic.
