reinstall-new-OS ending make more sense rather than miracle-shit cliche, glad didn't turn that way...

I remember hearing about Giftias getting new personalities after their OS expires. Same body, new personality and OS.

Honestly, I cried when Tsukasa retrieved Isla. Felt bad for him. Having to hold back his tears all that time. I haven't teared up in quite a while. Nice of Kazuki to go console Tsukasa. Would've been a horrible move if someone wasn't there to console Tsukasa. Just when their love begins to blossom, she dies. I loved their relationship, so pure of innocence.

The bath scene was cute. Surprised Tsukasa actually bathed with her.

Best moment was the kiss. A departing gift from Isla.

The final scene seems to imply it's a new Isla. If giving old Giftias new OS and personalities is true, then the giftia at the end is an updated Isla. Wold've been nice if old Isla stayed and instead, like try to find a way to keep her old memories rather than make her like an Olivia.

10/10 in my book. So full of emotion. I wonder why I kept this show on the hold list.

As soon as they said "amusement park" I knew they would end up on the ferris wheel. Good job on the feels there!

The whole Giftia thing was just a gimmick for Isla to have a limited time. It could have been done other ways to greater emotional affect.

The "after credits" was unnecessary. It softens the emotional blow. They should have just let it end. Michiru is still best-girl with shorter hair.

6/10 (above average) It could have been better.

Bittersweet ending, the love scene on the ferris wheel was perfect and I really liked seeing a happy Isla. Tbh I expected a little more drama but both were very strong the whole time, especially Tsukasa who obvioulsy suffered the most.
On the one hand I really liked the last episode but on the other end I hoped so much for a happy end, a miracle but there wasn't any ^^

The entire time, throughout the past 3 episodes, I was contemplating whether or not I wanted Isla to be Retrieved.
1. If she is Received my OTP is ruined and I am left alone crying
2. If she isn't Received the entire Setting, no, Plot would be ruined as well as the purpose for the progress in the story.

The writers did a nice job creating an ending that viewers could accept: flashbacks, 3rd person POV from the coworkers, no regrets, and a kiss for fan service.

They say.. or I say at least.. if an anime can't make you feel for the characters, it's not a well planned anime.

This is an amazing anime XD

**Spoilers ahead**

Loved this anime. Took me awhile to finish it due to life but cried my eyes out at the end.

I'm 98% sure it was Isla at the end. That same pale, small hand is too similar!

My first reaction seeing the pale hand, I'm like "OMG It's Isla, why isn't he reacting?!" Than it made sense.

1. If he overreacted to the new Isla, she would be freaked out, just like how it was between Olivia/Andie and Eru.

2. I believe he will become partners with this new Isla and when they're comfortable with each other, he would show her the journal. I guess she could deny that it was hers but she works for a company that deletes giftia's data after so much time. So she had to somehow realize, "Hey, I could just have a new OS". It seems she wrote most of her cherished memories, either happy or sad, which is the most important ones to really remembered.

Now this is what bothered me.

I'm not into building computers majorly but have built my own PC. If we're talking about a world where these androids are practically humans, I don't understand why the memories should be lost.

With how their technology looks, I don't understand why they couldn't get a back up flash drive, CD, cloud data, etc. Yeah okay, let's say there's corruption. I think the worse thing could happen would be "Oh, was I there? I don't really remember much..."

Again, maybe I'm just looking too into it and I guess there wouldn't be a series if that was the case, lol.

I like how they stuck to the rules of this world and didn't pull out some deus ex machina. Overall I liked how it had nothing to do with school, although characters weren't 100% mature. Also Tsukasa was a nice change from typical romcom MC - although nice he knew what he wanted and actually realised his feelings and confessed. Plus we got a couple of episodes from their life as a couple. I liked this anime.

Another fairly predictable show, with a scenario that has certainly been done before. Still, I quite enjoyed the intro, sometimes watching it again and again before viewing the episode itself. All around a nice enough anime for just 12 episodes. I give this a solid 6.5/10!!!!!

Not a bad series, I especially favored the ending in that she moved on like all the other giftias. I think the few episodes leading up to the ending were nicely done and went smoothly.
7/10 for me, much better than I expected from the earlier episodes.

I hope for no S2 unless it does not follow Isla, it's like an Angel Beats thing.

lol so most of who remains to finish the series like it, I recall the early episodes and there was much more controversy. I am still disappointed in Plastic Memories, but at least it wasn't as "average" as I was expecting.

I actually originally dropped this anime after ep 2. I think enough positive posts had motivated me to pick it up again this past week. Finished it tonight, the last episode is definitely hard to watch depending on the watcher.

I think I felt as surprised as Tsukasa when I realized it would happen then and there. It ended up being the perfect place but the surprise just added onto the teary moment.

I had originally found it boring and dropped it without seeing the simple message this short anime was conveying. I interpret it as a nice and simple story which attempts to remind the watcher just how important each moment is and nothing more. I think the added relationship between Isla and Tsukasa was there to accentuate this fact even more by making the moments between them all the more valuable.

Thank god it ended as it did, anything different would have been a disservice to the premise. Tsukasa would have never let Isla get to the wandering stage after witnessing the heartbreak and dealing with a giftia in that condition.

Originally a 2/10 but after picking it back up at ep 3 I settled on a 6/10. Worth a watch if you have the time and enjoy sad endings.

Loved the pairing from the start, and a very touching ending.

Though the story had some holes in it. Oh well, good romance

nice bittersweet show! you need that some time, too. it was obvious, what would happen after the first episode, but that doesnt ruin the show or thomething like that. i simply enjoyed the development. it was good, that there wasnt some sort of triangle romance or epic drama nets or stuff like this. just the two of them with some short stories for background information and some feels and thoughts about the end of life and the goodbye to your loved ones. the music was great! the ED song is so fantastic in my ears with this series in mind. and nice and fitting future style. it was a little bit different than other future designs. maybe the show would have been better with more episodes to have a slower pacing. that would have create more calmness and more space for the little, but important things in such a life, imho. and it would have created a little bit more room for the other partners. but 13 eps are oky, too. so overall i would give slightly over 0,85, cant decide between 0,86 and 0,87 … lets say 0,865. ^^ sweet show, i will remember that show because of cute Isla in combination with the ED song wich is now part of my holy music hall of fame. ^^ thanks for this show between all this fighting and school stuff!

Isla and Tsukasa were a very cute couple in my opinion. I was hoping that everything would work out in the end somehow, but this was fine too. This episode made me cry a lot, possibly more than any other show. 9/10.

I was pretty surprised when reading the forums and reviews after finishing this show as I thought the show would be more well-liked. Sure, it may not be an edgy show with unique characters and stunning plot twists, but so what? I enjoyed it. Greatly.

So right until the end nothing was explained. Why do the androids have a fixed lifespan of 9 years? Why can't they copy their memories before reinstalling the OS? And above all, why do people buy these faulty androids knowing full well that they're going to die on them within a few years? The entire stupid premise and the faults in the androids were simply used as a gimmick and an excuse for melodrama and some cheap action.

Still, when it wasn't trying to be a sci-fi show (and failing at it), as a comedy and a romance anime, it was fairly enjoyable and even made me shed a tear towards the end. All in all, it was a 5/10 for me.

Well, I cried some manly tears for this one.

Overall I really liked the start of this show, and I thought that the first like 6 episodes were great!
Though I felt like it lost a bit of it's touch from ep 6 to 12.. Felt a bit boring, but in no way bad.

Overall, I'm giving this a 8/10, had some real tearjerker scenes in it.

Unlike most of the top reviews, I didn't find the whole premise and world design that devoid of logic, but I can see where they're coming from.

If there's one thing that I would have liked, is if they left out at least one small possibility for a happy ending, even if it didn't happen (I don't mind sad endings) it would have been less predictable than this. Basically from episode 2-3 you already knew that it was either a sad ending or a massive deus ex machina, with the later episodes hinting at a 100% inevitable sad ending. That kinda renders useless one's possible expectations at what may happen later down the road.

From very early on I was already waiting to see how they'd pull dem feelz off and while I think the execution was fine (they even kissed, that's not common), I wish it wasn't as obvious that it'd end on this note. It doesn't have to be a sick plot twist or anything, but at least something that truly makes you wonder 'what will happen next?".

All in all, this was fun, not that very feelsy (although the "I want this dream to end before the ferris wheel ride completes" or something was powerful), and very predictable albeit executed well.

I don't watch as much anime as before...

It's isla at the end. Tsusaka has no reaction because the owner gets to choose the options and he chose the third one, so he expected her to be back. Well, its a possibility because he did sign the retrieval form so I'm guessing he gets to choose an option.

Good ideas, bad execution is how I would sum this one up. The fact that machines "expire" and there is no way to retain memories is also bullshit but whatever.

This started off pretty cool, i liked the idea of them going around and retrieving machines and the dramatics that ensued from that, while i do think the can't retain memories thing is a bit stupid and totally not explained at all, it just...is....but its such a shame they didn't stick with that at all. It had massive potential, but in the end became yet another average rom-com/rom-dram.

There are so many pitfalls to reviewing this show it makes my brain hurt.

For starters, the entire science fiction premise is not to be taken as a significant plot point. This isn't a hard sci-fi story where universal laws are well established and explored within the themes of the plot. Worrying about why they have expiration dates completely misses the allegorical nature of the plot. Isla is no different from a human girl. The giftia recovery process is nothing more than a thinly veiled excuse to have the protagonists introduced to the larger themes of the series before Isla herself has to die. Trying to world build until the very end probably would have turned out horribly. I mean, the Matrix was a fantastic Sci-Fi movie but look what happened when they tried to dig deeper into that!

Even more crucial is that giftias having souls is a stated premise of the show. Isla's robotic behavior at the start is intended to be allegorical. Or maybe it's just a giant, awful pun. Either way it doesn't bear scrutiny and doesn't have to. People become withdrawn and afraid of emotional attachment for many reasons and Isla has several reasons to pick and choose. Plot-wise she was abandoned by her previous partner, but the most glaring reasons are her own inexperience due to her age and her struggle with her own imminent mortality. This is what made the series stand out from other death-tragic-romances for me; the intentional focus on the development of the person who is dying rather than solely exploring the grief of the survivors.

Tsukasa, ironically, nearly becomes a manic-pixie-dreamboy in the process, which is probably why the side characters spend so much time nearly breaking the fourth wall with their invasive and unhelpful advice. Having him called a lolicon, the various pickup-artist attempts he makes and everyone protecting Isla's feelings at the start all make sense within the context of the premise while also allowing Tsukasa to prove his sincerity to the audience.

The ending is unmistakably terrible for several utterly meaningless and trope heavy reasons. The first kiss being the last guts their entire relationship by making it completely asexual. For how deeply in love we are supposed to believe they are, to not savor a kiss - no, several deep and painful kisses - robs both Isla and Tsukasa of their final development as characters. Forget thoughts of their would-be sex scene, because the physical intimacy they were lacking would be equally represented by an honest-to-god kiss. To end Isla's life the same exact moment their lips touch is such a ham-fisted and inhumane delivery of what was supposed to be Isla's final growth into an emotionally mature person.

It also robs us of getting stabbed in the heart a second time in the hypothetical scenario where the ferris wheel ride ends without Isla dying and both characters have to deal with a completely new perspective on what they'll never get to have. Then they might have to actually deal with the fact that death is never willingly received, never pretty and best experienced surrounded by loved ones instead of ALONE IN AN EMPTY AMUSEMENT PARK.

I won't bother with numbers here, because this is a beautiful series despite its clumsy delivery, shallow side characters and weak ending. I forgive it for its painfully accurate portral of regret, depression, fear of emotional attachment and misguided delusions of a better future. Ironically this is probably a series best enjoyed by people who have honest regrets about wasted time/youth. I nearly died when Tsukasa saw how long his own shadow had become.

PS: They got so many minor details perfectly: Tsukasa's crying face was ugly because all crying faces are ugly. Hey, there's a lesbian who didn't get senselessly murdered/rejected! The giftia at the end not being Isla's body is the final nail in the coffin of the audience's naive hearts. The ambiguity was rather annoying.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who was extremely underwhelmed during this last episode. The after the episode where Tsukasa had to shoot the kid's Giftia, the show became incredibly boring and slow. I was hoping that there would be some feels and a few tears when Isla was retrieved, but I hardly felt anything.

I'm extremely disappointed with this last episode. I was on the verge of tears from episode 1's ending, but this episode hardly gave me any feels at all. Sure it was sad, but I felt cheated out of a good ending and am still pissed off. This show ruined a great story with that ending and by dragging out the second half. I give this show a 4/10 at best because of the ending alone. The episode 1 feels are the only thing that saves this show from getting a 1/10.

Just gonna leave it here

I tried to hold back my tears, but the moment when the song started to play i just balled out really hard, Isla asked Tsukasa to retrive her memories at the feris wheel so glad that they kissed at the end, shout out to the guy who gave permission to them to ride the feris wheel he's the real MVP, otherwise this bittersweet parting wouldn't happen.

This anime showed us how important your life is, you don't want to waste your time doing useless thing but instead use the time of your life to create wonderful memories and spend it with your belived ones and here i am sitting in front of my PC at 4 a.m like a complete nerd xD

The sensei who came up with this kind of story line is a "sadist" forsure, i knew that there'll be a deathflag but i kept watching anyways

So this is my theory, Tuskasa get paired with a new partner i'm assuming that's Isla with the new OS just like Olivia ( Andie ), remember when they retrived a school girl Giftia from the old lady in Kimono, who asked to change with the new OS, she said she been doing that many times. That means Tsukasa can create new memories with the new Isla, let the past be the past, just create new memories as life keep goes on. Plus terminal service recycle their Giftias to cut down low just like Olivia ( Andie ).

All that said it leaves us to decide the ending, that's why they didn't show the face of the new partner of Tsukasa at the end. I know this might be off topic but they did the same thing for the ending of Code Geass.

Overall score 10/10, would watch it again for the feels :')

I wanted her to be saved at the end, anything I didn't care how they explained it, but let it happen, but no.

This anime wasn't bad, but it was nothing special by the end. I thought the beginning was very strong and that it just became cheesy and predictable by the end. I still thought the ending had a lot of emotion and yes I did start crying, but that's because I'm a sucker for romance. I have to put the tears to the side though and give this a 6/10.

I just don't know. It was far from well-written, but I would be lying if I said I hadn't teared up at multiple points during the series before completely losing it for this last episode. I don't know why it hit me as hard as it did, and I'm talking nasty, snotty crying from a guy who rarely sheds tears for more believable and thought-out stuff.

I don't know if I would have preferred a deus ex machina or not. The pain makes it memorable, and that earns points from me.

Aside the cute moments between them, the rest was really disappointing.

-Things didn't match, for example: The others Giftias needed to be reseted on that sort of machine attached to that car they drive, just see how Isla was reseted... Wtf?
-Things happening just in sake of plot (drama) convinience.
-Didn't explain anything.
-It ended like: "I want to end it here and now and fuck explanations. I want things to be like this and period, nothing more to tell and bye" - Imagine you on a street and someone pass through you running and throw on your hands something you never saw before and that you don't know what you have to do with it, it was just like this ending.

Not the best feels. Angel Beats still beat it.

At least, they kissed.

I'm sure it's Isla at the end but different OS. I think it's useless if the new OS is completely different from Isla old OS. I think during these 9 months, Tsukasa helped Isla to train under Terminal Service. And once again build up memories from the scratch but I'm not sure about new Isla to become his gf again since her personality is completely different.

The first six episodes were good, but it kinda fell off afterwards when they dropped the world-building and went straight for the romance and the feels.

The comparison I would put this anime to is Eureka Seven. But I say Eureka Seven's romance actually served a point since the Coralian wanted to contact and understand humanity. Renton and Eureka's love served and driven the entire plot, which allow a lot of World Building.

Plastic Memories built up an entire interesting premise, androids going rogue past their expiration dates and black market retrievers. That would have been an interesting plot to see the black market retrievers expanded upon.

Instead, all of that thrown away past six, to focus on the romance. I'm too old to enjoy the romance of the main characters who struggle to hold hands after confessing and becoming a couple.

Cause I'd be fucking banging that woman. You know why? Cause we're a couple, let's fucking thrown down and get out the toys.

Instead, you kissed when you're dead, which I called like the first episode. Nice to know your show don't deviate from clichés. I can't tell if the Japanese move thia slowly in relationships or this is aimed at children and teens, therefore it's portrayed like this. Still, it's annoying to see.

I spent my night watching this anime. And all I think about is "Man, if I had time, I rather watch Eureka Seven than this shit". Cause at least the romance in Eureka Seven didn't cuck the plot and World Building as hard as this anime did.

Fuck this anime.

It was still fun to watch though, at least for the drinking game. How many romantic clichés can you spot?

Anyway.

The build-up to the retrieval was better than the retrieval itself. Amazing stuff beforehand, i really felt uneasy.

Don't tell me that this was Isla at the end? Probably not cause Tsukasa would have reacted differently to that.

I think his non-reaction was perfect. It was definitely Isla, but Tsukasa knows that reacting to the old her would be pointless and had already accepted that he would likely see her again as someone else. Tsukasa knows it's Isla, and had already accepted that it's not the same Isla, but it's in a way still Isla.

aww man I cried all the time during this episode....
it really reminded me of Chrno Crusade though...
I loved the way he adored what Isla calls her flaws :'(
lemme guess.. the new partner is the "new" Isla?
