tsuyokunaru :
about me saying "fragmented" , I was just meaning things like "read a ero guro , "read a yaoi/yuri" , etc . But since you make it clear that you want it to be open to underaged reader , I guess we'll forget all that . It's a little sad though , and from my personal point of view , I wouldn't see problem with those add since it was suggested we could chose some item to drop and modulate our reading list , for people that would be absolutely reluctante to it (and I understand that , really ) . I don't think it would be "perverting the children" to add those item ^^ , I consider every person posting on MAL to be at least mature enought to know what to not look at , (NSFW) and spoiler tags are not for nothing .
But you are the mastermind here , you decide and I'll respect and understand your decision .

I see your point when you say you don't want to make the thing complicated , but making a club is absolutely not difficult ( I made one with a Friend in the past , see my sign , it didn't really worked but hey , with your idea it would ) . On the contrary I do believe it would make things more lively and somehow more simple . People picking this reading challenge will be implicated . There is absolutely nothing to fear here , a club isn't a close thing for initiated mumbo jumbo adept or anything ^^ . Making a concerned community of reader will be the key for a memorable experience , everybody with their own pace and implication . Please think about it more ( I don't want to push you with my mumbling , it's just that your "reading challenge idea" inspire me greatly and I would like to support you in it , really )

Part of the appeal of having it in the Manga Discussion board over a club, I think, is that it gains more exposure and other members can still join up late and try to follow along. If everything is done in a club, then you're limiting it to whoever stumbles upon the club.

Just a few random fly-by thoughts for more items, since you said you still are looking for more...

Read a manga that:
- starts with the same first/last letter as your nickname
- has a title of more than X characters (30? heh)
- and/or has a title of fewer than Y characters (3? eheh)
- has a megane main character (not biased here at all)
- has a main character of gender opposite to the demographic (i.e. female lead in a male demographic)
- has been adapted to live action (there are more of these than one would think)
- has a main character that is a professional in his field (doctor, detective, embalmer, etc.)
- has a manga within the manga (or is somehow based around making manga and/or mangaka)
- does not take place in Japan, but is still within our universe
- is recommended to a manga you've read for this challenge which you scored 8 or higher
- another user has read for this challenge

I'd suggest adjusting:
- Read a manga of an anime original franchise/series
to something like "Read a manga adapted from a different source (anime/light novel/game)" to expand it a little.

Will update if anything more comes to mind.

Edit:
- Could put something like "choose a random trope (from http://tvtropes.org/) and read a manga which that trope applies to". Challengers could spam the random button a few times until they get something good, too (it wouldn't have to be the very first, since it might not be a well-known trope).

I'm trying to think of things that aren't specific genres/character traits since there an infinite number of these...

Whoa, I can't believe I didn't notice this thread until just now. Lazy me I've been reading a lot of manga recently so this looks interesting....Some suggestions that came to my mind are:

- Read a manga that is a parody
- Read a manga without dialogue
- Read a manga that has been adapted by a video game
- Read a manga that is ranked in the 10000s
- Read a manga that has an ongoing anime (for this season
- Read a manga in the MAL top 50
- Read a manga that is an alternate version of the franchise (spinoff/cross-over)
- Read a manga with only one main character
- Read a manga by your favorite author/artist
- Read a mecha manga
- Read a manga about war
- Read a manga with idols and musics as a main theme
- Read a manga about cars
- Read a manga that someone on your friends' list rated a 10
- Read a manga that you can relate to yourself

Anyways, this thread is a really interesting idea imo. I do have two questions though....

1) Will there be a sign-up thread for people who are interested?
2) Is this going to run for the remainder course of this year (2015)?

I don't necessarily mean that making a club is difficult, but it might be something that might put some people off from participating and that's not really what I'd want. If it becomes a project that I decide to continue in future years, then I might create a club, but as a test run, I'll go with the thread. I hope you'll want to participate anyway. Kineta made some pretty good points as to why.

@Kineta
Your suggestions are really good, I don't have time right now to add them to the main list, but I will when I get the chance, I'll probably end up using at least a couple. Thank you for your contribution.

@Stark700
Thank you for your suggestions, I'll add them to the main list when I get the chance. To answer your questions:
1) Yes, there will be a sign up thread once the list is compiled and it will be linked to here as well
2) Yes, this will be an ongoing process for the rest of the year

Could the "re-read a manga" and "re-read your lengthiest manga" be dropped ? I don't find the idea appealing at all , and even a little against the idea of this challenge , which is doing discoveries , no ? Just sayin'

The lengthiest one has already been dropped but I don't see the issue with re-reading as one item in general. I don't know about you but when I change and grow as a person my perspective changes as well and can often make re-reading a completely new experience. There's a lot of new things to discover by re-reading old favorites from a new perspective, trust me.

And if you still hate the idea you can just re-read some One Shot in about 5-10 minutes and be done with it. It's not really a time intensive challenge so it shouldn't be that hard to complete even if you're not too enthusiastic about it.

Naturally not every item will appeal to everyone but as long as it's not time intensive (like re-reading your longest manga) I don't see the problem. After all part of the goal is to make people try out new things. For some those are genres or authors out of their comfort zone, for you it could be giving the re-reading process a chance. As long as it's something you don't usually do it seems in line with the overall intent of the challenge, imo.
I probably regret this post by now.

Higashi_no_Kaze : yes , i see your point and I understand and agree with it . I went a little too fast saying this and I think it's because I recently re-readed my favorit manga in fact (which indeed let me new impressions , and was very rewarding ) , so the idea didn't looked appealing to me because it was something I already did...which was without thinking of other peoples , so kind of a selfish talk now that I think about it .

But , I fear that some people would want to do as you say , re-read a little One shot just to complete that objective . Like , "sigh I have to do it , so i'll do it quick" . Somehow it's kind of stupid because you could just fake the reading or whatever , and it's not a competition we want to make...but human mind are made like this that some people might just want to do a "speed run of reading" for exposing their success here just one day or two after the actual start of this challenge . You could say , it's their problem and they miss the actual goal of this...but...arf , I don't know how to say it . I would want to be certain that things like a "re-reading" will be understand and rewarding for every one , and I think the same for all the other objectives .
If some people just pick an item thinking that it will be a pain , and they read in a hurry , as if it was a work...it would kind of sadden me .

I guess we should emphasize that it have to be a funny , lively and rewarding challenge , not a competition between MAL users . Maybe Tsuyokunaru could add a little text telling that in a more clear and good way , when she will make the new "sign up thread" .

I also understand your point (and I'll make a note of it, like you request) but unfortunately that's not something we'll be able to control. Personally, I'll do it for the reading, but if someone speed-reads for the satisfaction of showing off their process, we cannot exclude them or even prove it. Same as if they're not actually reading what they said they did or whatever.

There are a couple of things in the thread that I'd like to include but still not looking super forward to and that's part of the challenge. Now, it could be possible to pick something I don't like and I wouldn't want to drop it. I'd complete it and then try to discussion in the thread why it wasn't appealing, most likely, even if it pained me during the reading process.

I was gonna reply something similar. We'll never be able to prove that anyone has ready anything he says, but since there aren't any kind of advantages involved it doesn't really matter. I don't care if others cheat at the challenge, it's not a competition.

Also the thing about 'just reading a short one shot' Dullboy can be applied to almost every challenge that doesn't specify length or type of publication. I'm sure there are one shots for every genre and content. If someone wants to do it like that (for all or some genres), why not? We can't prevent it and I also see no reason to try. One shots are also manga and can be awesome even when you only seek them out because you're too lazy to read anything long at the moment.
I probably regret this post by now.

I'm considering something like making a basic list of around 35 to 40 things and people will be able to pick items from there for their 25, but then for you guys who'd like a bit of a bigger number, maybe you can attempt to complete it a second and/or even a third time with slightly different lists every time.

I'm too lazy at the moment to read through this entire thread at the moment. So my questions are:

1) Are we all going to be reading the same manga for each category or is it up to each individual to choose something?

2) If it's up to each person to choose something, what is the point of having a discussion? Surely we can't discuss 50 different manga per category, and most likely way more than 50, since everyone could pick something different.

Edit: Should have read the OP more carefully.
tsuyokunaru said:
As you can see these are general guidelines for participants to choose what manga to read instead of having a list of specific manga, this way 2 different people can participate in the challenge and read completely different stuff and still finish their lists/participate in discussions.
But that would cause a lot of issues in terms of discussion, which is one of the main selling points of this challenge for me.

Like I said before, there will be an option if people want to attempt twice or more times, but I'll keep the basic at 25. You can double for 50 though you'll have to repeat some items in the list.

OK. I'll seriously consider that.
Edit: nah, I can't include it (actually it was hard to narrow the list down) but users can read yuri, yaoi, shonen-ai and shoujo-ai if they choose to and it fits the criteria for another item (i.e. a manga about music).

It might be possible that someone ends up reading something you like/have read before. The post will be for recommendations as well, so I think there will be space for discussion even if not all read the same manga at the same time for every item. I know there is a massive amount of manga out there, but I think there probably will be some common ground for a few participants, specially if some items call for people asking for recs or checking what others have read/are reading.

Unfortunately I compiled the list and I couldn't include any of them because I did it before you posted. I'm really sorry, but maybe I'll be able to use this for the future if we do it again? (I really liked the mystery manga idea since I'm a fan of the genre!). Either way, I hope you'll participate.
