I'd like to ask, in your opinion, how does watching F/Z enhance the F/SN experience for you?

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN EXPECTATION SPOILERS (BUT NOT ANY PLOT-RELATED SPOILERS)

In my case, it has a lot to do with expectations. Admittedly, if I hadn't watched Fate/Zero earlier, I probably would have been more frustrated with some of the characterization and the pacing of the show. Fate/Zero gave me the backstory to these characters, and gave me a personal attachment to them before the show even started. For example, Kiritsugu comes across to me as a more tragic, loving character after seeing his backstory rather than the larger than life, enigmatic character he would have been. Watching F/Z also gave me more patience regarding the gradual plot development of UBW. If I hadn't been impressed by F/Z before, I may not be trusting this show enough to impress me either.

This is all just from my experience though :D I would still recommend going from FSN to FZ to a new viewer, but starting with FZ definitely had some benefits. :)

That's actually interesting, considering Type-Moon fans like myself would say it's far easier to appreciate Fate/Zero after reading Fate/stay night.

I've always been a little resistant to the idea of watching F/Z first, because I imagine it gives you a different idea of Fate from what the original story intended, and that would set up disappointment when F/SN came though, like the complaints of the "high school setting" and Shirou being supposedly generic.

I'd like to ask, in your opinion, how does watching F/Z enhance the F/SN experience for you?

I watched F/Z first, and it didn't hurt my experience in the slightest. Sure some of the revelations no longer surprised me, but the anticipation in seeing the characters discover them, their reactions, and how it influences their future actions made up for most of the loss of shock factor. I also looked at the interactions between some of the characters in a different light since I knew them or their situation. Anything scenes in F/SN involving Kiritsugu, Rin, Sakura, the blond guy, Kirei, and Illya gave me more impact than it would have.

I'm not an elitist or too picky about the age of the cast or the setting as long as the characters handle themselves well and receive good development. I didn't expect something like F/Z when I went to read F/SN. I knew I had watched a prequel written by a different author, so I kept my mind open. Most people don't and that's their loss.

That being said, I still definitely recommend going through F/SN's story before F/Z's as the order intended. I rewatched F/Z after reading the F/SN VN and realized how much more I would have enjoyed F/Z if I had known certain things before hand from F/SN.

Dat budget. As animation goes, this has set one heck of an incredibly high bar for animation sequences for a television series. 7 episodes in they're showing no signs of letting it dip.

From what I have seen, it seems that the Priests are not fond of you specifically, rather than newcomers as a whole. While the fan base can definitely get....very passionate, some of your early posts in the initial episode discussions felt somewhat provocative. The reason why you feel that way isn't very indicative of how newcomers feel as a whole.

Which is why they shouldn't act like they know anything for certain and rush to a firm judgement. They have to be patient and let the story unfold. They can make guesses, they can have opinions, but they can't declare those guesses and opinions as if they were fact and dismiss the assurances/corrections of those who do know what they're talking about.

Example of the kind of mentality Fate veterans have to deal with:

Noob: "Shirou is a generic annoying MC who is very naive."
Veteran: "His personality is an important plot point and he'll develop."
Noob: "Irrelevant, still generic annoying MC who is very naive and it doesn't matter what you say."
Veteran: "Just be patient."
Noob: "THIS ANIME IS OVERRATED WITH STUPID HIGH SCHOOL KIDS AND THEIR HAREM AND NOT DARK AND MATURE LIKE FATE/ZERO."

I don't know how you could feel disappointment about the high school setting if they don't even focus on the high school itself. It just happens that the characters are in high school. Well, I would never judge the quality of something based on the type of the setting. Not to mention I don't really have preferences on settings; if it's done right I think I could watch basically anything.

Also, these kind of complaints are probably just something that haters come up to have at least one thing to base their empty critics in. ''High school setting''. So what? Well written characters, amazing atmosphere and worldbuilding (perhaps even better than F/Z in this aspect), extremely fucking beautiful visuals, amazing sound, really promising and dark story that progresses in a very nice and slow pace, which really fits to everything about the show.

Watching F/Z first gave me an idea of how this universe, the whole magic setting and how the Holy Grail War really works (is better to understand with more depth the conversations, the characters' goals and the whole point of the story). Also, is really nice to see such a great focus on magic/worldbuilding in FSN. If anything, I could be disappointed about the characters, but I can't really tell with only 7 episodes, and I feel like this will be bigger and broader than F/Z. And I can say for sure that without F/Z I wouldn't be able to understand half of FSN. Is nice to be familiar with the whole universe; it makes me relate even more to the story.

Let me give you an advice. Ignore 'em. Seriously.
I've said 10x so far and I'll repeat, I should not post in FSN thread. Same stands for others that are just as big (or bigger) fanboys of source material.
We can't accept criticism or people guessing stuff. We think it's unnatural, when in fact, we do the same on other shows discussion boards.

Thus, we should just comment on general thread with spoilers tag and duke it out there.

So yeah, ignore people telling you you're wrong. Otherwise, sooner or later, you're gonna run into spoiler that's going to ruin you an otherwise great show.

Enjoy the ride. The less you know, the better. ;)
And keep guessing, assuming and everything else. That's the point of watching something for the first time. Being wrong and then surprised.

That's good to hear. Many anime-only viewers have tried to devalue F/SN by saying it's less "dark and mature" than F/Z simply because the characters happen to be younger than those found in F/Z, and it's pretty bad. It doesn't help that some viewers might also have a negative preconception of F/SN because of Deen's rather horribly executed adaptation.

Watching F/Z first gave me an idea of how this universe, the whole magic setting and how the Holy Grail War really works (is better to understand with more depth the conversations, the characters' goals and the whole point of the story). I'll have to agree with you there.

I don't know how I'd feel coming straight into Unlimited Blade Works when it comes to understanding general world concepts. Most of us from the VN had the fate route preceding it to introduce us to the world.

But without that (or in your case Fate/zero) I think I would have trouble grasping some things first time around. Sadly with 24 minute time constraints the best we can get out of this adaptation alone is very brief looks at concepts highlighting their main points.

I guess it just comes down to this: Fate/Zero takes far more prior knowledge to understand fully than Fate Stay Night (just the UBW route), which can be followed with nothing but rudimentary ideas on the world glimpsed in it's episodes. However as in your case Fate/Zero has been a adequate replacement for the fate route considering it covers quite a bit of what you learn there.

But still Fate/Zero at it's heart and in it's execution is still a Prequel, and to achieve it's goal of such has to involve things revealed at later stages in FSN.

Ugghhh.. I don't even know anymore, It used to be so black and White. I guess watching F/Z as always is just not "Ideal". But I can hardly reprimand people for doing it, as you say you have enjoyed seeing UBW from a different perspective and I think you will enjoy seeing many Parallels to come.

Tl:dr: Pointless rambling, please carry on.

Meh. While I agree with most of what you said, Rider from Fate Zero is superior to all the current servants right now. At least in my view.

Em, it is a fact that every Servant in FSN except Assassin(lack of Nps) is superior to FZ Rider.

OMG Yes. I thought I was one of the few. I actually mentioned in my live blog of the Fate route that Lightning Swordsman felt really out of place. I would've preferred something like Clashing Souls TBH for an epic battle like that.

Yep yep. The OST is totally mind-blowing and matches perfectly with the scene.

Some people may not like it that much but it is certainly not "weak".

Oh there's nothing wrong with the OST, I just like to hear remakes XD
