Never been one for all this environmentalist stuff.Whatever happens happens. Whether we reap Terra for all it's resources and leave it behind in desolation as we swarm out in search for more worlds to devour or fail miserably and die along with it is not my concern.

Meh, I am not much of a green thumbed/environmentalist kinda person. I think we can and should do our parts to help the environment. But it shouldn't become an obsession either.

I don't try to get others to be environmentally sound, but I feel that if you could take steps to be cause less pollution, then why not try. Simple stuff like recycling and turning off you lights when your not using them help.

I care, in the same the same way I care about taking care of my house or my work place. Everyone making a small amount of effort can make a difference.
When people talk about going further than the basics, that is when I need actual proof that my effort isn't being wasted.
When environmentalists talk about the world reaching critical mass and other unfounded assertions, I rarely see any concrete facts to back them up.

In general, I am strongly opposed to government imposed "green" initiatives. I think there is some place for regulations against mass pollution by corporations, but for the most part I think if environmentalist groups have a strong enough case for whatever they are worried about, individuals will listen and take action on their own.

protip: Read up on the topic before you make unresereached positions and judgements regarding environmentalism. If you had any understanding of the situation we're in from a scientific perspective, you'd probably make a more informed decision. And no, that does not mean enrolling in the Google Bias Affirmation University to approve of a wasteful lifestyle. The "going green craze" might be a "craze," but that doesn't mean that anything associated with its goals are as well. I feel like a large portion of this anti-green craze is motivated not just be lack of scientific understanding, but also of going against the norm purely for going against the norm (fucking hipsters) and probably most importantly because it requires lifestyle changes.
I like this.

also. The "darwinian" approach here is retarded highly flawed. It implies that somehow, animals can evolve and adapt as quickly as humans can advance and produce new technology which is absolutely absurd. It also implies that somehow, ecosystems can function like before/support its members to fit such new imbalances and changes in its populations.

Or maybe, ignore that. Let me rephrase myself completely. Nature was not made to satisfy our egos, and it can function with or without humans. So yes, global warming/climate change/environmentalism is rather pointless in the sense that nature will continue on with or without such changes fantastically well. We aren't destroying anything minus a couple species. Such changes are bound to cause extinction, possibly massive, but this leaves the opportunity for new life. The only problem is of course, that the human species will quite probably not as well.

I don't. I don't consider the land inside of any town/city 'natural' any longer.

I would rather the world was a lot more green, but I can assure you I would never get my own wish.

Something like the planet is covered in trees, nothing but trees, all trees. Barely enough room for modest cottages set in the trees. Mountains with lots of trees, and fast flowing streams going through the trees.

I have no interest in modern civilization. You can keep your big cities and factories and elaborate technology. I'd be happy never going much further than 10-50 miles in my lifetime.

The only reason I even think of the future, is my son will be stuck living in it.

I don't actively care about it. The only thing that keeps annoying me is that many people seem to be stupid to place their waste in trash cans, even when they stand right next to it. I especially don't like the uncountable cigarette stubs placed all over the world (or at least whereever I go). This really is a drug of the masses.

Here's another thought.

You might not realize it, but recycling takes energy resources to do the reclaiming. Or in other words, we create pollution often in the process of getting rid of garbage.

A lot of people eagerly putting all their plastics and tin etc in all of their respective bins, likely think they are being so responsible. Most are not aware, that a lot of municipalities do not always follow through. Often recycled garbage is just thrown out. It costs money to recycle. See above.

Then there is the problem of the true waste, that we just never think of.
For instance, we love to beat up on smokers. Damn smokers ruining our air.
But if you drove your car to work today, you just pumped all that wonderful car exhaust into the air. If you are downtown in a city, the air will NOT be magically grand just because no one is smoking in public places.
Every time I go to Toronto, it gives me a head ache. I am used to living in a small town an hour from any urban centre worth mention.

Then there is trucking, factories, and all those office buildings, just doing what they do.
Every household is a pollution generator somewhere.
The power needed to heat it, or cool it.
The sewage your family creates.
The daily trash.
All the packaging from all the products you buy.

If you actually want to say you have gone green, walk or bike to any destination within 5 miles.
Plant at least one tree a month somewhere.
Go out and actually pick up trash, for free, just because it helps.
Sweat a bit more in the summer, avoid the use of AC.
Wear a sweater, instead of raising the heat in winter.
Buy products that are local. Give less incentive to have it shipped to you.

Of course if you are over 40 like me, you might not be too worried about the world 50 years from now.
If you are under 20 though, well in 50 years, you will still be dealing with anything being done today.
Think about it.

Yeah, I do the same things I did when I was a kid which are to recycle as much as possible and to not throw trash wherever you please(be it on the sides of highways or lakes). Things that basically don't require much effort.

Admittedly, I'm pretty much apathetic to this whole "going green" movement. I don't go out of my way to live a "green" lifestyle. Indeed, call me a horrible human being or whatever, but the way I see it, it's just pure lethargy.

I wish I cared more.

I mean that though, I actually do wish I had more of a concious awareness of what I'm doing to the enviroment. As much as I'd love to go green I don't see myself ever being prepared to devote the time and effort to it. I'd like to get out of that habit but I've been brought up in a family that doesn't really care about the enviroment; we jet around the world, waste water/food/electricity.

I guess it's an option for the future when "green" becomes more acceassable.

Wait, what?

Anyways, what they said makes sense. It is extremely likely that issues like global warming will only manifest as an actual threat (like life-threatening on a massive scale) a century or two from now, despite what the environmentalists are saying. Though then again, the future can give plenty of surprises.

I think that the earth is important and that it will probably rot in the future due to our "I don't give a shit" attitude.

I mean, I wouldn't try to recycle or pick up every piece of trash I see, but I don't try to litter at all.

What I really hate is pointless voluntary littering. People who do that are just complete and total douche bags. Pointless littering is around alot. Like there are these groups at my highschool that go to McDonalds every day for lunch, then after they eat all their food they throw the bags and wrappers all over the place for a few kicks. Bastards...

2. Build Arcology cities or similar megastructures to protect yourselves from the rotting environment.
3. ???
4. Profit!

As long as we don't loose our technology and keep important stuff like the genetic makeups of plants and animals while brushing up on areas like hydroponics and such, the death of Terra is not necessarily the death of the Human species. With enough technology, materials and time, we could likely survive anywhere.

Though Living in a bleak, dystopian megastructure like the ones often depicted in fiction does not seem too appealing really.

I don't really care. For those tree hugging liberals that would kill them selves to save a tree, you're stupid. In my own opinion, if man kind is too ignorant and stupid to take care of it's enviornment and just continually harms it like we have been, then what ever happens to us due to this, we probably deserved. In reality, "saving the world" is a lie. It's saving human kind, the world wil still be there when we're gone, that's just how it is. And frankly, when we're gone, the world will probably start to natural repair itself and survive for years to come untill it's supposed to be destroyed. In the end, we're not saving the enviornment, it will be there, it will just be different, but we're saving ourselves. So, if you "go green" to save humanity, good for you, and if you go green to "save the world," all I have to say is, you're stupid. If you're offended by it, I'm sorry, but this is how I feel.
