I wonder how she turns into a sarcastic stoic lady with a perverted sense of humor.
I didn't expect them to actually explain Chaika's missing memories this early (considering we have s2 coming). Aside from that, a good albeit slow episode explaining Akari's and Tooru's past.
Vivi's death flag? I doubt we'll ever see any of the main and supporting characters truly dying here but one can always hope.
It's a bit stupid to have Toru and Gillette both always end up in the same town each episode, for literally the exact same time frame..and then they do not even meet. They do not even show us that Toru avoided them or anything. I preferred it where they at least deducted possible directions like in the beginning, instead of complete non-interaction but still ending up in the same town.
Also, they showed a bit of Toru and Akari's past, but we only saw their mentor, not their parents or anything. Thats quite common in anime somehow. If there is a mysterious mentor, the parents are pretty much non-existent (even if still alive). And it looked like only Toru ever trained.
And i agree, it seem likely that Shin will sooner or later appear again, and if he's more like "oh hi there, long time no see", it will be on opposing sides.
I laughed when I saw Akari all over Toru even as a kid.
Then the back story for Hasumin and Toru's motivation to fight was interesting, but ultimately it didn't show why his elders allowed him to become a Saboteur. Oh well, I can always wait for the rest of his back story.
Chaika must have had it rough if she had to use her memories to replace magic fuel. I'm guessing she was gonna try it once or twice, but in the end forgot she had tried it before and kept doing it, thus the memory loss.

Thanks god there is someone who thinks the same as me.

In the LN it goes into more detail , both of them are actually orphans and they ended up in a orphanage where they also train childeren to become sabaoturs but they left that bit out and yes it can confuse it like that.
I've been waiting for this: some more background on Tooru & Akari, although I would've wanted even more,I'll shut up & be content with this.
Gotta love Akari. Cute as hell as a kid, pretty hot as a grown-up or at least good-looking compared to the other females in the show(red Chaika might give her a run for her money but she doesn't seem to be getting much attention) and often ready to deliver some hilarious lines. She's also almost as professional as Tooru, both in skills & attitude.
now we know how chaika lost her memories. interesting
"Urushibara Ruka. The mannerisms and voice of a woman... No... More feminine than any woman. But he's a guy. Taller than Mayuri, but so very thin... But he's a guy. Looks great in a miko outfit... But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."
That brat in the shop was an annoying little shit ... glad he didn't stick around long.
We got some flashbacks to Ikari and Toru's backstory this episode, which was nice. Also a hint as to the heroes' next goal, a leader of a mining colony who may have bought one of the Emperor's remains.
Only three episodes left ... there's no way they'll be able to come any semblance of a conclusion in the amount of time they have remaining. I really hope there's a second season, I've enjoyed this show and want more Chaika! Hopefully the Blu-Rays will sell well so we can get more of it.
Didn't like this episode that much, guess it was transition episode again. ()
Edit: aw shit, my emoticons don't work? :o
I almost never read discussions after I made my post, if you want to reply PM me or post on my profile page.
A nice and slow paced episode. I liked it. It goes to show that it doesn't have to be nothing but fight scenes to get entertainment out of it. Really looking forward to the next few episodes!

Chaika Chaika Chaika <3 How is it possible for her to be so cute :D
So Chaika can ride a vehicle with her memories but is she does that she loses one of them,i wonder what memories did she forgot to fuel the vehicle she was riding....
Finally we now know something about Tooru & Akari childhood,so Akari liked Tooru even when they were kids xD And why does Tooru master looks like a girl?ahhahah
It seems that Vivi don't know what is to be poor, because if she knew she wouldn't have reacted that way...
"There is no such thing as an Anime elitist. You watch Anime, therefore, you are trash by society's standards."
The merchant telling Toru about the remains in the next town was stupid. That would never have been said if it writer of the series could have found a more natural way to advance the plot. But he took the easiest way out.
It's nice seeing Toru and Chaika bond but I want more Toru x Akari development.
A much needed history episode! At least every episode so far keeps things moving forward in some way or another.

I hope nobody is raising any death fags here lol.
That flash back was nice.. great to see their past little.
The story is back on track.. good to see some decent progress again.
I hope there's some action soon.
a lot of people seemed to enjoy this episode but not me.. it was boring because there were no fight scenes. It's nice to know more about Toru, yeah, but it's still boring. And btw now that I think about it, it was never mentioned why Chaika talks like a robot or something. She can't complete her sentences only phrases.. I wonder why?
They got a magic equivalent for fireworks and then they have straight up fortune cookies from the real world.
Ngl using memories as a desperate source of fuel would be pretty convenient if you don't have a lot of good memories and you just want to forget stuff.
This episode is fine on its own merits, but I find it frustrating that this low-key, low-stakes story is not in contrast to any intense, high-stakes action; the last episode was pretty low-key as well and there's been very little action in general. There was nothing the series or characters needed to take a breather from.
