If I remember correctly, that image isn't from a proper panel nor a ping pong game, it's just one of those images authors often draw on the chapter title page or volume introduction. It's just to display the quirkiness of the character. A single 225 x 350 image is hardly going to represent what the manga or anime have on offer. But of course it's going to portray ping pong in a cool way. It is cool. Why would a sports manga ever portray its content as boring or drab. The manga perfectly captures the intensity of professional ping pong, chapter 49 especially is told completely without dialogue. The game flows both brilliantly and impressively. The manga also includes relevant terminology and knowledge of the sport. Taiyo Matsumoto was commissioned to travel abroad to research, write and draw his first manga for a magazine, which was a sports manga about baseball. He has known right from his roots not to cut corners, and he doesn't with Ping Pong. As someone who used to play ping pong, you would probably love the manga. |
