Really impressive animation, however I'm not a huge fan of the story at least after episode 1. I'll stick with the series to see how it plays out. The animation for the opening was crazy btw.

This was absolutely beautiful. I had expectations for this and the episode didn't betray me. This may be a shonen romance I might actually really fall in love with. Manaka is just adorable and I can't wait to see how this plays out.

When the episode was over, I wanted more immediately. Definitely a good sign.

btw, if this is a 2 cour show, I have a feeling some serious shit is going to go down and this cute, mellowed out slice of life is going to do a 180 real quick. Just finished watching it, this has promise to be the best anime of the season.

Reminds me A LOT of how shinsekai yori got started. Despite the really cute and pleasant character interactions, I'm already seeing a lot of potential for a source of conflict between the sea-humans and the land humans. Especially since manaka almost lost her raiment, a scenario might present itself later when a sea-human might be forced to live on land.

I find myself comparing this show to "Shinsekai Yori" frequently as well for a multitude of reasons.

I feel bad for hikari
He might have a reason why he hates the people outside the sea

And the reason why he acts like a bitch... it's bec. he is jealous!! He is worried that one of the surface people might take manaka from him(but ofc he forgot that manaka is not his property)

But mehhh my vote still goes to hikari x manaka

The fact that Hikari is such a flawed character makes him so much more likeable than Tsumugu for me.

Unless he becomes a generic tsundere. :|

Oooh... this is going to end badly. Shinsekai Yori (what I saw of it anyway) all over again.

At least it's prettier, but it feels a little like they tried very hard to make it look like the way it does for the first episode. Maybe too hard, we'll see. The conflict seems a bit forced at the moment, too.

loved it.
the ost when chisaki told kaname about her love for hikari knocked me off my feet...

I sure hope there's an explanation why hikari is so protective over manaka (other than pure jealousy) or else he might get a bit annoying

Yes and no at the same time. If it was only animation yes, but when I wrote that I was also thinking about char design, background, etc. So if We include this than, no. It would sound lame if I wrote this phrase including this things.
And I said that actually because the char design reminded me of one eroge ;) (I don't remember the name of it)

I wasn't gonna check this out, 'cause I'm already watching so many other anime this season (so many good anime!). I decided to watch this after watching Yokurama's First Impression of this series, and I'm glad I did. The setting is really interesting, and the first thing that caught me while watching this was how great the scenery looks. I think this has a lot of potential :)

Also, the scenes in the water made me uncomfortable... aren't they supposed to be floating around and not just walking normally... I suppose I'll get used to it and stop thinking about how unnatural the whole thing is. In time.

Yeah, that's the only thing that bugged me, how gravity seemed to work just fine underwater without things lifting or billowing or anything, a bit odd, but I guess I could overlook it.

oh god the ending theme is fabulous
and i was expecting more "watery" soundtracks like Aria or Umi Monogatari, but i guess it's gonna be romance drama all the way down the hill....

and i love the cast. so much. lol. HanaKana, Kayanon, Ryota Ohsaka, Kaito Ishikawa (i usually dont go for the cool guy but damn he voiced the guy. i wouldnt mind Kouki Uchiyama too...). and another newbie i havnt noticed Natsuki Hanae.
also Toriumi for Uroko-sama

premise-wise, it's interesting. if we're going to go for logic, i still dont get how they're used to the land's gravity after living in water for long, but that's an aside thing.
totally didnt expect 2-cour for this one though. i'll see how it goes

So far the best anime from fall 2013, first episode in and already a love triangle (or square.) I love the premise of people living in the water and the people living on land having a natural grudge against each other, it heightens up the conflict in an unusual way. Looking forward to next week!

I'm not the only one! The underwater scenes were pretty for sure but the completely not underwater feeling of the environment irked me. The water is as clear as air, it's super bright and you can see the clouds in the sky above, there's no viscosity or buoyancy (except when it lets the director do a neat trick like suddenly swimming or jumping up to the second floor), etc.

The premise is neat, but the characters didn't really grab me all that much. Hikari was downright annoying with his short fuse, jealousy, possessiveness, and blind fits of rage. Sounds like a keeper to me! No wonder all the girls in his life like him. I'll give them more time to grow on me, though I thought this episode felt a little forced.

So awesome, seeing a unique clique of people who live down under the sea.

Characters are also pretty good, I'm not sure what to think of the speechless guy, and we have the hot headed Hikari, but Manaka and Chisaki I find are likable and Kaname seems a decent enough guy. I start to see the conflict between the people on land and at sea, with discrimination going on so I think bridging this will be one of this series' goals.

Well enough of the predictions since this is a 2-cour, I reckon there'll be plenty of time to get the characters and story going, and for something as interesting as this, I'm definitely going to hold on for the ride.

The setting is fascinating, but that's the only thing the show has to offer. Take away the setting and it feels like an incredibly generic high school romance with a dash of generic discrimination. They still have a chance to turn it around, but my hopes are not terribly high.

I loved the bright colors... and personally I don't think they're all that cliche of characters. Besides maybe Kaname, I thought all the characters had a lot of personality, and were really likable. I have a feeling that Kaname might like Chisaki... if so, those two kind of remind me of Sasayan and Natsumi from My Little Monster. And I don't care how beautiful Tsumugu thinks that fish-knee is, I'm going to be seriously bothered if Manaka has a farting fish-knee for the whole series (or even more than a few episodes). >_>

I swear I wanted to chop my leg off when he was about to feed the fish-knee.

I need to understand something though. Are the 4 of them evolved humans who can live in water or just normal humans?
Antearion said:
Okay I guess. I'll give it another two episode. I can't see myself watching this. I do want to know are they half human and fish or what?
Hikari tells you when he talks about the legend. Apparently the current humans who live in the water are the offspring of the sea god and the maiden sacrifices offered to him by the land dwellers (though he said "apparently" to this part, so it might not be true).
Also though, if you didn't catch it, humans were originally from the sea. But they eventually cast aside a "special raiment", that let them survive underwater (given to them by the sea god), so that they could live on land.

Looks beautiful. Seems like it's going to be a moody romance-oriented story. Possibly 3 unrequited loves involving 4 people. 5 if Kaname later turns out to like Chisaki.

It also reminds me of Spongebob for some reason.

Well, well, well.

That was kinda weird. I actually prefer a normal setting and storyline than this. It's just so weird to see fish everywhere. Also I'm not particularly fond of living fishes, I don't mind eating them though.

The fishes and the setting aside, the scenery was indeed beatiful. Typical P.A works I should say.

Great cast. Also that OP and ED! Ray + Nagi combo. Reminds me of Ano Natsu. Great songs~

We can clearly see the love pentagon here lol. Each character like the other and none have mutual feelings for each other.

So I guess it's gonna be a roller coster of emotions since its a two cour series.

To be honest I don't see this surpassing previous P.A works romance drama series IF the characters doesn't improve. But it is definitely too early to tell. Well, I hope we will have good character developments later on.

Who is going to be the main guy lead? The kind of douche Hikari or Tsumugu. My guess would be Tsumugu and the plot will go like this Manaka falls in love with Tsumugu, Tsumugu falls in love with Manaka. People won't allow it because their different kinds. Hikari falls in love with Manaka and gets jealous and tries to make her fall in love with him. Then he realises he will never get Manaka and starts dating Chisaki.

Nagi no Asukara looks promising but i don't think it will be the anime of the season

That Uroko guy is a dick. Quite surprised that this show would deal with such heavy themes like bullying, discrimination, overfishing, environmental destruction, and culture lost, right in the first episode...at least that's what it looks like to me. Kind of reminded me of Umi Monogatari...with a little more angst.

Love conflict from first episode! I did not expect that.
The background art is amazingly well done, although a little bit weird. The pacing is alright and the characters is quite generic for romance drama. That is said, the theme is quite unique, reminds me of Sola, a love between two worlds. Pretty much Romeo/Juliet-esque, wonder how they will work it out.

Very interesting setting. I was surprised at first why there is fish floating around in the 1st scene then it hit me that they are sea dwellers.

This. I didn't get it at first either. Judging from the visibility and physics down there, their water is apparently made out of air, which really bugs me. Shows they must have added the underwater setting mainly for the sake of "oh hey, we can have pretty fishes", without even trying to make the setting convincing or immersive at all.
