Finally another work from Makoto Shinkai!

After a bath taste that was left from Hoshi wo ou kodomo, I feel pretty satisfy with his latest piece. The art is simply amazing, it left me breathless and made me constantly pause and re-watch from time to to time. The level of details is over the top, just look at the animation the rain make when it fall on the ground, the tree slowly swaying under the wind, the dust falling with each movement of the chalk. The sound is pretty solid but not that great, I believe it is mostly a variation of the main theme song but it does suit the mood.

Aside from all of that, the story does not amaze me. While this one is truly a strong point of Makoto Shinkai, telling a simple story but with a really interesting point of view, it doesn't left any impact in me at all. At the beginning I really felt a resemblance to his work 5 cm per second and I hoped it will be moving and emotional but it is not. The built up for the movie final climax is not enough imo, also, the climax itself is so so.

Eventhough the movie itself is good, it doesn't have any lasting effect at all, at least for me. It is something that u see, praise, enjoy, and then forget it as time goes by. 7/10, I hope that in his next work, Makoto Shinkai will improve the story aspect of his movie.

That was just so not good. The plot and characters were terrible, shallow, and messy. I disliked Hanazawa Kana as the 27-year-old Yukino; she sounded much too young. Little to no development on their relationship was shown. The only saving graces were the music and art, which even then cannot make up for the lacking storyline. I didn't come into this movie with high expectations, and I guess I was right. Makoto Shinkai needs to work on his plot ideas, pronto.

People talk a lot about the last lines about walking and come for you, but the most memorable lines to me, except the emotional confrontation near the end, are the pair of Tanka from Manyoushu (ch.11) that bookend their first meeting in the park and their last (before getting true to each other). It is a beauty that so many tanka in Manyoushu are pairs in which one is the answer to the other in feeling and mood.

The lady to the man:
なるかみの すこしとよみて さしくもり あめもふらぬか きみをとどめむ
The thunder strikes softly. Can't the sky get a bit cloudy and rain falls a little. To keep you around. (my bad translation)

And the man answers:
なるかみの すこしとよみて ふらずとも わはとどまらむ, いもしとどめば
Even if there is no thunder or rain, I shall stay here, if it is your desire to keep me around. (my bad translation again)

Much better in mood and fits the dreamily beautiful scenery than the J-Pop song at the end.

I never thought those words (tanka) would strike me where i'm not really volatile of
I have no words to convey what i thought about the garden of words
no rate needed, all i want to leave is i'm satisfied

Well, that was disappointing.

It lacked the emotional UMPH of Shinkai's other works. The characters were pretty dry. Plus, squick relationship. At least it didn't actually go anywhere.

Really nice movie, too bad it was kinda short. I loved the story , the MCs and how he stood up to those 3rd years for her. Anyway , too bad they didn't end up together , but at least it ended on a good note , unlike some of his other works.

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Wow, that animation was so beautiful; I loved these rain drop, the movement of the trees and plants, all so beautiful.

The OST and story were also great, my only complaint would probably be the length though.

I definitely would rather receive a physical snail mail letter from a person I love and look at her handwriting. I guess modern technology has made people less romantic these days? And as for your next question, yes, snail mail letters are still much more common in Japan. Despite the move to electronic communication, it is still the common practice for people and companies to send New Year Greeting Cards (the equivalent of X'mas card in the west) in physical form to be considered polite and respectful, for example.

Wow. This is my first Makoto Shinkai film, and I finally understand why everyone is so taken with the art of his other works... the visuals were breathtaking. I'm torn between giving this a 7 or an 8 though, because I think the story was a little weak. Both characters were in relateable situations (between the frustration that comes with adolescence and having a passion, and feeling lost), but they weren't explored very well.

Loved the piano soundtrack.

My take is that the story in this movie takes place from NOW, as it is currently the rainy season in Japan (around late May), precisely when the story in the movie starts and as the story progresses through summer, then fall and winter (when Takao did the year end exam which should be January), it should be 2014 by the time the story reaches the epilogue.

The scenery porn was great as usual with a Shinkai production. I did notice on the letter that Yukino wrote on the bottom in English was "...and fell in love, I asked my sweetheart..." Guess someone wasn't hiding their feelings much.

The animation and visual is AMAZING.
2nd movie from Shinkai Makoto that I've seen where the couple didn't end up together.
Sad, but I like the realism.
The romance between the student and a 27 years old teacher is off IMO.
Nevertheless, 45minutes flew by.

At first glance i thought Yukino will have a tomboyish like voice (since her character looks like it specially that she drinks alot of beer) but shocked when i heard that cute smooth voice >_>.. wouldve preferred a tomboyish one but i guess thatll mess up the part where she got bullied by the students (since it wont happen if she was tougher and tomboyish).

Either way this movie is just phenomenal, just look at that background art and the animation it was so fluent..!

Too bad though that it was only 46 minutes =_= i need more background arts as epic as the one's on the movie and animation as fluent as well!
(would have love to see them hook up too nyahaha) but they probably are afraid of people copying what happened and started courting their teacher's.

Still, this is really good and i want moar!

As expected of the makers of 5 Centimeters Per Second, this movie was stunning visually, and the story was brought out really amazing as well with the art.

The story was one touching one as well, young people struggling in a big world and tries to find the means to go forward and open up to people. Sadly such as vile rumors can have a major impact on ones life, just like Yukino. who was a high school teacher.

The character stories were pretty decent overall, and again the visuals in this show brought out something extra to it. Which was really good, the scene that takes during the stairs was amazing to watch with the visuals and brings more emotion to it.

Like many of Makoto Shinkai works, things doesn't go all that well, but not bad either. People move on and maybe, when they both are ready. They will cross path yet again.

Fantastic visuals, good story. 8/10 for me.

I liked the movie overall, but the sudden outburst near the end was a bit too cringey for me. I really enjoy the quiet, gentle atmosphere that this movie portrays (similar to 5 centimeters per second, though I enjoyed 5cm more), I just wish it had continued rather than climax with a bunch of sobbing.

Yes, beautiful art, not as gripping as I would hope. But not so bad with the spare dialogue and muted interactions up until the end. Even though we all know how it would go I still loved that placement of the shoes there by the conclusion.

You did watch the last minute? The movie continues after the credits. The sobbing part was really sweet I think. Yukino had also fallen in love Akizuki but decided to run away from her problems, her job and him. Not wanting to leave it like that however she faced him one more time to hopefully reveal how she really felt. Having had some time to think, Akizuki lashes out upon seeing her wanting her to hate him so that he could move on thinking it was impossible that she could return his feelings. Yukino starts crying cause she realises that she has been running away and throws herself at him. Then they both started crying cause although they are both really in love and had changed each other, their situations mean that they couldn't be together for some time at least but at least they were honest to each other and perhaps there could be a future together.

Personally I'm a huge fan of Shinkai's works and I really enjoyed this one. Last year I was very fortunate to meet him at a screening of Children Who Chase Lost Voices. ^^

Again he brings back his common themes of distance and love, although he describes it as "love" in the traditional Japanese sense, (lonely sadness) as in longing in Solitude.

The plot is quite simple but also sweet and endearing

Also the movie explains where his love of shoes came from so not really a foot fetish as some thought. lol You can have an interest in shoes without it being a fetish.

In the end I do think they meet again cause;
1) They said it was the happiest time in their life and they both pretty much admitted to being in love.
2) He was still thinking about her many months later
3) The letter showed they were in contact still.
4) And he does say when he matures a bit he'll go to her.
