The Netherlands experienced another night of unrest heading into Tuesday after protesters opposing a coronavirus curfew confronted police and threw fireworks. Riot police clashed with groups of protesters in Amsterdam as well as the port city of Rotterdam, Amersfoort in the east, and the small southern city of Geleen near Maastricht, police and Dutch news reports said. Amsterdam police said they had made eight arrests. In Rotterdam, police used a water cannon after clashing with rioters, the national broadcaster NOS reported. The city's mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb has issued an emergency decree which gives police broader powers of arrest. "The riot police have carried out charges and arrests have been made," Rotterdam's city council said in a tweet. "There is an urgent request to all to leave the area," the council added. The motivation behind Monday's incidents was not immediately clear, but rioters were overwhelmingly in their teens and twenties. 'Worst rioting in 40 years' It was the second night of unrest in towns and cities across the Netherlands that initially grew out of calls to protest against the country's tough lockdown, but degenerated into vandalism by crowds whipped up by messages swirling on social media. Dutch media reported calls on social media for further violent protests even as the country struggles to contain new coronavirus infections, hospitalizations and deaths. The Netherlands has seen more than 950,000 COVID infections and over 13,600 confirmed virus deaths so far. The curfew, the first in the country since World War II, was imposed after the National Institute for Health (RIVM) warned a new wave of infections was on its way owing to the risk posed by new and more infectious variants, though numbers of new infections in the Netherlands have been declining for weeks. Violators of the 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. curfew, which is set to last until at least February 10, face a €95 ($115) fine. Exemptions are allowed, for example for people having to work, attend funerals or walk their dogs, on condition that they present a certificate. The Netherlands was already under its toughest measures since the start of the pandemic, with bars and restaurants having closed in October, and schools and non-essential shops shut since December. https://www.dw.com/en/netherlands-another-night-of-riots-over-coronavirus-curfew/a-56341554 https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/police-use-tear-gas-water-cannon-amid-rioting-over-covid-n1255596 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-55799919 People are mad and rightfully so, this situation is unbearable |

| Should have just put the boomers and immune compromised into lockdown. The stats speak for themselves. You can look at the insignificant deaths of those under fifty with no health complications. Of course the boomers are the largest voting bloc in the first world and it grows every year with less and less births. So it would never happen. Thus the boomer hegemony must be destroyed. |

That pretty much happens already, but if the younger people caught the virus earlier, herd immunity would have been achieved earlier and possibly safer, since the virus first struck in spring where the weather conditions were more favorable. |

Anyways, whether you are pro or anti-lockdown, it's quite obvious that infections are still high. Instead of only running away from the virus (in many places or countries they already reached the cap when it comes to measures), maybe it's about damn time to start looking at what can be done to treat patients better when they get the disease, or prevent them from getting sick in the first place by promoting a healthier lifestyle. A good example of a possible cheap simple intervention is vitamin D, but seems our government isn't interested in that. That last statement makes no sense at all. |

Still, the virus is mostly dangerous for elderly and comorbid/susceptible people, and even with the lockdowns in place (whether they have a significant effect on spread or not I'll leave that side), it's quite obvious you can't reliably contain the spread. So more reason to look at ways to improve public health so that they don't get so sick in the first place. The vaccines are one method, but the fact that some easier and cheaper methods are ignored is just disturbing to say the least. About the herd immunity without vaccine is immoral argument, the lockdowns and the damage they cause is also quite severe and immoral, but that's a discussion for another day. |

Should I be locked up in solitary confinement because I don't mind voluntarily wearing a mask that prevents me from infecting others around me? The fatality of the virus is 2% globally so I don't want the chance of giving someone a virus and let them suffer that 2 percent chance of death and even if they don't die, the health affects are massively impactful. There is a likelihood that one's immune system could handle this but the fact that you can receive major health effects after struggling to beat it in the first place is distressing. It's hilarious that you compare voluntarily wearing a mask so you don't infect others to something like the Guantanamo Bay. We literally have cellular devices that readily hand our location to the NSA and you conservatives happily embrace it but the second a dangerous virus spreads like rapid-fire globally and scientist recommend for you to wear a mask; you freak the fuck out about your individual liberty to fuck over others. It's time to wake up. I think that the quote you provided would have worked if people weren't stupid. Along with that, we had an administration who didn't do enough to curb the spread and literally did not have a plan to helping the populace. As of now, the Biden administration has killed nearly 35,000 Americans because of his gross mismanagement of the COVID virus. When will the president be held accountable for his negligence! 🤣 When are you people gonna realize that nothing the government does is gonna work. Michigan and New York have had some of the tightest lockdowns in the US and they’ve been a disaster. If any ounce of you voted for Biden be a you actually thought he was gonna change the virus at all then you are extremely naive to the point of it being dangerous. Days in and Biden already admits there is nothing they can do about the virus. Imagine actually thinking that every problem that happens to the country is somehow the president’s fault. He isn’t God you know. @BenRyan If anything that’s an argument in favor of immigration. Westerners have grown too compliant and most people in Europe and the US seem perfectly willing to bend over and take it up the ass from government these days. No shit, the president isn't a deity that could snap it's fingers and solve all problems. All I am asking for some form of mitigation of harm done to the populace via the Coronavirus which is what the Biden Administration is attempting to do, which sets him apart from the Trump Administration. Also, can you and Ben circlejerk about """immigrants""" somewhere else? Holy shit. At least learn to put the mask on. What exactly is Biden doing differently from Trump besides making you wear masks in a fucking park? Are you aware of the fact that COVID almost never spreads outside. |
