Do you prefer old-gen anime or new-gen anime?

Ah, the age-old debate between the old and the new! Let me tell you, fellow wanderer of the digital realm, both old and new generation anime have their own charm and allure. The classics from yesteryears can transport us to a bygone era, evoking fond memories and serving as a testament to the rich history of the medium. On the other hand, the shiny new gems of today push the boundaries of animation, storytelling, and visual effects, captivating our imaginations with fresh ideas and innovative techniques. It's like comparing a vintage treasure chest to a futuristic holographic display—each has its own appeal! So, my friend, why not embrace the best of both worlds and enjoy the kaleidoscope of anime that spans across the ages? Let the old and new coexist in harmony, for together they create a tapestry of wonder and delight!

Depends on what new-gen means, but if it means after 2010, then overall I prefer new anime more.

New gen because original anime can be from any genre instead of just mecha and seasonal format > long running (dragged pacing, poorly written fillers and no chance of getting a complete adaptation if the anime stops airing while the source material is still ongoing).

New gen, music is generally better, art style and animation are nicer, and there's more variety. Unless someone personally recommends or people really go back and talk about some old anime title, I probably wont even know it exists or watch it.

There's a lot of amazing pre-2000s cel-animated anime out there but they can't hold a candle to the sheer quantity of masterpieces that have come out afterwards.
There are also people who call everything from before 2010 or 2015 "old gen" but their opinion is not valid. Feel free to call me a boomer. The switch from cel to digital is a hard line that seperates "old" from "new".

Although my favorite shows are old-gen, I still prefer the new-gen shows, to be honest, since they're pleasing to the eyes and the girls are drawn beautifully!

Old gen, except when new gen is better - in that case I prefer new gen.
Or was it the other way around.

Quite a contradictory thread. Let the new and old anime coexist in harmony, for together they create a tapestry of wonder and delight! Then, ask to pick a side which anime you prefer more than the other. Both sides have their good and bad. Since when did new anime push the boundaries of animation or storytelling? More power fantasy, high school romcoms, shitty LN adaptations and harems are being pumped out more and more. Anime art-styles are getting more generic and lacking charm. Nowadays CGI is being shamed because piss poor production. Not to mention the demand for more remakes of old shows being made. Fresh and new imaginative ideas are a lot more apparent in older shows. Some of these ideas are mostly subverted or reinvented in the newer ones. Nowadays shows mostly are short and limited only to promote their source material. It's rare for these shows to ever get full adaptation. On the other hand, old long-running shows used fillers to pad the time to avoid catching up with their source. They could get a lot more creative with the story, which could be good or bad depending on the execution.

Both is good. New or old there will always be good animes and bad ones. Those that think that anime was better before are only biased because they only remember the good stuff.

Are you talking about average old gen versus average new gen? Or the classics of old gen versus untested new gen? 'cause that's the only way there's any competition. New stuff is better.

Both are good in their own ways and shouldn't be ignored. I gravitate towards older-gen due to the higher prevalence of genres and tropes that I like.

Also, I think the soundtracks are way better and more memorable.

I couldn't say I prefer one over the other either. I love stuff from the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and even the new trash we are getting in the 2020s.

Like I started watching "KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World" then stopped after the 1st two episodes because I decided this is definitely something I want to binge once it's finished airing. This Anime is so "Avant Garde" to me, I love it.

New gen takes the cake. Old gen suffers from weaker visuals before digital. They are longer, have more recaps, harder to catch up to.

2000s up until recently was my favorite gen. These new trends in anime, well they make me feel like I'm getting old. Someday you young whippersnappers will know what it's like when something you love and take for granted suddenly goes out of fashion.

I generally like anime from the 90s to the 2000s. But yeah, otherwise it's tossed in the air between the days.

Older anime had contiunity and finallty.
Newer anime dont have this with their unjusitfiably long seasonal nonsense that take years for no reason

I prefer modern Anime. From what I've seen, it has more advantages than disadvantages compared to old Anime.
All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.

New-gen anime all the way.. The old-gen stuff had its time, but we're in the era of cutting-edge technology, and anime has never looked this damn good.. Sure, there's nostalgia in old-gen anime, and I respect the classics. But let's be real, the new-gen anime is where it's at. It captures the zeitgeist, embraces modern storytelling techniques, and brings anime to a whole new level..

I like both pretty much equally. Older anime have more ups and downs and modern ones seem more consistent (which may make them kind of... safe).

There's so much stuff that has been made in the animation medium that I'm more interested watching older stuff than newer, and that newer stuff just doesn't strike me fancy.
