Impossible to say. There'd be a number of series that never made it to VHS/LD/DVD. Thus stuff where only the masters or perhaps TV broadcasts (if the even made it that far) would be considered the rarest. There's also some really old stuff, where only the master exists.

Most likely the old shows left unlicensed.

edit: didn't look at the date of article. >_>

This is the rarest one. I'm sure that there are much more, especially during the war. Some of the rarest shows in US were from the war, and were banned too. Most likely the same concept across the ocean.

I've been trying to find the following, but I can't even find a single trace of a torrent of a RAW on the net, much less in a DVD.

Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh
Nintama Rantarou
Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru (First season)

Kind of defeats the purpose.

A good anime that is recent is, of course, not going to be as rare simply because it will be milked for everything it's worth. Rare pretty much means it's old and got very little acclaim from an audience for one reason or another. But..mostly...it'll be older than something from the 1990's. And that date is easy approaching 20 years ago.

Definition of rare:

1. coming or occurring far apart in time; unusual; uncommon
2. thinly distributed over an area; few and widely separated

Very good animes are also rare, so dont give me that definition. It's damn unusual and uncommon for them to make a nearly perfect anime such as see my top rated animes.

What i ment was, there couldn't have been any good anime ignored by the public even if it was 4343423 years ago.

That's entirely untrue. There are many past gems that are entirely ignored these days because of their age. Things like Tetsuwan Atomu (Astroboy) were loved by many when they were new, these days they're rather old and bleh. As decades pass, social standards change and looking at old media can become quite the experience. But that doesn't mean they weren't loved at the time. Hell, I watched it when I was young, and recall enjoying it. But it's not something I'd like now, I imagine.

Only 200 people here on MAL have it on their list. That's pretty rare for a show that aired internationally (was dubbed/retooled and broadcast in many countries.) and was loved by hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people in the 60s and 70s. Hell, it was even airing in to the 80s here.

So really, age is a factor. Your point is moot.

How about that supposed first anime ever made of which no one knows of any existing copies or traces at all. That's pretty rare.

This reminds me of not too far back, when I tried to find episodes of Ai Shite Night and could only find a few Italian dubbed ones on YouTube D:

Oh, and as far as actually *buying* anime goes, (shockandhorror) I think it's pretty safe to say that just about anything licensed by Geneon is now pretty rare :D

The ones I can think of are pretty old (and just cause they're old doesn't mean they're not any good :P), and I have them on VHS and haven't seen them anywhere else. I'd recommend them to about anyone:

Battle Angel Alita OVA
Eight Man
Cho Jiku Seiki or Orguss 02 OVA

These are all very good, and pretty rare.

It might be hard to imagine any new licensed anime becoming rare since the genre is much more popular than it used to be.

There are a bunch of raw episodes of this on NicoVideo, but what drives me crazy is that they don't have ep #2-4. I watched #1, and I want to see more, but I can't bring myself to skip episodes :) They have some of the Italian live-action series too, which is really hottifyingly cheezy :D I can find a LOT of rare old anime on NicoVideo, but it is all raw, of course! ^_^

Says a person with One Piece, Bleach, and the FAR WORSE second season of Shakugan no Shana rated as his top three animes? If you are going to be pretentious, at least back it up lol Anime being old does not necessitate its quality being poor at all.

I stopped on book 5 I think since the store I buy it from never had any on stock...and I never bothered to order the remaining ones.

I'm also interested in the more recent release of the second set...curious how that turned out...though I'm guessing not as well.

From what I have read...there was some really good content. The matches in that tournement she was in was really wild.

There's a torrent of Orguss season 1 online(packaged with Megazone 23, Windaria, and some documentaries by some conspiracy theorist). It took me about two months to finish downloading it, though. Also, there's no way to get all the episodes of Machine Robo: Revenge of Chronos subbed in English, unless you want to buy those Chinese bootlegs. I'd buy them, but I don't trust the sites that sell them, unfortunately.

I can get a good chunk of the original Orguss through Hollywood Video (along with numerous other ancient gems). No store has more than a handful, but between 4 or 5 that I know of . . .

Battle angel is by far the rarest of those three. It's most recent release is 2 years earlier than that of 8 Man After and 4 ahead of Orguss 02, and if you look at getting a copy, you'll see the fact reflected in the price. 8 Man After also gets a bit more common since a batch of VHS copies popped up at tRSI a few years back, along with several other Streamline Titles (all of which are exceedingly rare if they haven't been picked up by newer companies).
Two more I can add based on going price are City Hunter 3 and City Hunter '91. Just look - none on ebay right now, and a minimum of $130 for even a used copy of '91 from half.com or amazon.com (the $90 one on half.com is a bootleg). Not bad for an original price of $45 less than 5 years ago (they're also the newest ones I know of that you just can't find). Lucky me. I not only got them back when they were available, but at a 60% discount - and even wound up with a spare of City Hunter 3 to pawn off. Battle Angel is one of only a few other old DVD releases I know of that even comes close to managing that level of collectibility, and it's 4 years older.

However, the one that gets me the most is the Dirty Pair TV series. I think it was 6 or 7 years ago that ADV announced they had the license to that, and nothing was ever done. I learned much about fansubbing, licensing, and anime in general trying to get my hands on that one. In fact, the only thing I've ever seen, aside from the VHS fansubs I miraculously acquired, is a torrent with a digital version of those same fansubs. Can't even get the whole series through imports!

"rarest" would, likely, entail an anime that never left Japan. There could be other defenitions, of course.

Here's a few ideas.

Up until recently, I would've had Panda and the Magic Serpent (Hakujaden) and The Enemy's the Pirates. The former being the first anime and its distribution on VHS so rare that I never saw it until Digiview released an "ok" copy on DVD. I continue to try to track-down an origanal VHS copy to this day so I can make my own conversion. The later only started getting into databases in the last few years, is now availible on torrent, but the english dub (from the U.K. only) is extremely rare and, as far as I know, has never been put onto a digital format.

Now, for ones I think fit the term "rarest".

The Girl with the White Flag. Movie about the invasion of Okinawa. Almost no information availible on it stateside, and I've never managed to track a copy down. Insult to injury, it was made quite a while ago.

There are a lot of titles with varying degrees of rarity. Luckily the internet and import companies have helped make previously impossible-to-find titles open to us. Space Adventure Cobra TV series, as an example. Some still aren't here thugh, like Judo Boy.

However, if I were to settle on the rarest anime of all time...

I'd settle on Three Tales. First anime broadcasted on television. My sources indicate that no copies exist, and the title obscure enough that the company isn't even sure if it was in color or not. :p
