More storytelling about Loid but this one is much more expanded on his past. They adapted the emotional tone really well imo, and the parts of his character. The shit he witnessed in a warzone like environment was rough. Even as an adult, he went through more tough times but did have some friends and comrades by his side. Some of his character behavior feels similar to Yor. But yeah, I do find this character story for Loid quite interesting.

Engrave it in your memory, arcs like this are proof that the show can actually be good when it drops the recycled jokes and decides to get serious for once. That opening scene with Lloyd’s new place and his mom inside hit damn hard. You could really feel how much it broke him, losing his parents, thinking his friends died because of him... that kind of guilt would wreck anyone. Thankfully they didn’t actually die because of him. That reunion was genuinely sweet, seeing Lloyd cry and all. Which, ofc, only meant tragedy was just around the corner. Sure enough, if it wasn’t his fault before, the other side made sure it would still hurt. The guilt may not rest on him anymore, but it’s still there, lingering. It’s a rare, human side of Lloyd we’ve barely seen until now, and seeing how all of it shaped him into the spy he is today, finally with a family he can somewhat cherish, was honestly really nice.

This is really one of those very few instances in this series where the tone remained mostly serious throughout, I mean as you see, they have a habit of jumping between segments, which pretty rarely works in their favour if you ask me. Loid’s background was pretty much what we would’ve all expected. Lost both his parents, then forced into a war and eventually became what we all know of him today. Pretty realistic take as well, I mean if we look back and check the contents of everything that used to happen back in that time period this series is based on. War really shows what a man is made of, I mean, seeing Loid, of all people, overflowing with emotions is pretty much something which we won’t ever see in this series again, I believe. All of this eventually framing his current calculative personality tells a whole lot of what he went though. I feel the author should’ve spent more time on the backstory, but then again, this pretty much covers it all too well, too. Interesting how Loid goes way back with both Franky and Sylvia, and yeah, is pretty much sharing the same kind of relation till date lol xD

“Take good care of your friends” 🥲 this episode hit right in the feels, seeing Loid’s backstory and knowing all he’s been thru and yet he’s still able to smile and be a great adoptive father to Anya is remarkable. This was hard to watch, but at the same time it made me proud of him and optimistic for what lies ahead. Loid’s dad may have been cruel, but he was right about one thing. War isn’t a game. It’s horrible and not something to be idolized and Loid unfortunately learned that the hard way. Becoming an orphan, losing his hometown, losing his friends. Everything he held dear was stolen away from him so cruelly. The look on his face when that first bomb went off is haunting because in an instant, his entire worldview got turned upside down and the innocence he was able to live with before, was erased. As if that were not bad enough, he then loses his mom who was all he had left and had to be an orphan. No wonder he’d want to enlist early and lie about his age. Very real thing btw, my grandad did that to join the army after Pearl Harbor. This episode made me appreciate Frankie even more, I didn’t think it’d be him of all people to help restore Loid’s humanity. I think this whole arc is a perfect example of how easy it is to do horrible things to other humans when you dehumanize them. Sadly we see that happening all around the world right now. Calling your political rivals “enemies of the people” or blaming marginalized(LGBT, immigrants etc) groups for your problems. It becomes easy to do cruel things to them when you don’t see them as human. History is a cycle. The way Loid reverted back to a little kid when he found out his friends had survived.. and then that elation was quickly dashed when they got killed in the Roberts campaign.. just pain man. I imagine at that point, everything just starts feeling numb and you lose your motivation to live. The intelligence department found him at the perfect time really. They didn’t say it, but it’s obvious Loid’s doing all of this to prevent kids from going thru what he did and so seeing Anya happy is all the motivation he needs to keep going. That headpat she gave him at the end was sooo sweet too. Beautiful episode

What a rough backstory Loid had, losing his friends and family to senseless violence. Even though his new family isn’t real, it’s clear that he still cherishes them because of what he went through in the past. And also, that he got involved in this spy stuff so that future generations of kids don’t go through the trauma he experienced, growing up in a war-torn world.

I liked that part in the 2nd half with the onions. X said that the world is like onions - both round and layered. With the world layered with lies. "It's impossible to unravel those lies without shedding tears" It contrasted well with the ending where Loid joyfully cooked up onions for dinner with the family. There is hope.

| Just to be clear, while there's a lot of tension between East and West Germany, they never officially use military force to attack each other. But I'm glad this anime dramatize the event though, because it's such a good episode. It's what the world need to see right now. | Ahhh I wish they delved into the war so much more, it's always good when SxF gets dark because it contrasts so well with the innocent kid stuff. We at least get further glimpses into the first West-Ost war with Becky's bodyguard And for those bringing up modern events, I would say don't be hypocrites. Most won't dare make parallels to the ongoing ethnic cleansing in Palestine, and won't dare introspect enough to think about "propaganda" in the sense of 80-years of western narrative control concerning certain WWII nations. Some get close to the truth, but almost all stop at the threshold, either too simple or too scared to name it. |

wow. just... wow. :( sadness. i generally knew Loid's childhood sucked but whew. getting the facts? ugh. hurts hard. it does make me wonder how 'exactly' he has internalized all that into who he is today? preventing war through espionage... i do worry though... how much of his dream/memories was Anya able to 'see'? also... if he does lose his 'happy family' sometime in the future... will he be able to handle it after losing his dad, then his mom, and finally his 3 buddies? also... what is up with the mangaka's NAMING gags with him? hah! Sergeant Spoofy? Loid Forger? his names all end up being some synonyms for fake, liar, fraud, etc. !!! ;> ah, if you didn't know a loid is a technique to pry open the latch of a door handle by inserting a flexible item into the door-jam and wiggling it around to push the latch into the door and open it. like the TV trick using a credit-card or some other small piece of flat plastic. it really only works on cheap and flimsy door latches/locks.

MadanielFL said: So Franky was an Ostanian soldier who deserted, that's actually cool, but I wonder how and why he still lives in Ostania now... My guess is he probably assumed the identity of a dead civilian or even a missing soldier later on when the war ended after somehow tricking his chasers into thinking he must be dead. He's great at getting info so no reason to think he wouldn't be able to find a good name to use. As for why.. maybe he thought it would be safer than Westalis as a former Ostanian soldier (if he's caught). Or maybe it was after he realized he could fulfill an informant role. |

@MadanielFL It's only natural since Westalis is based on Western Germany, on the contrary you can see Ostania's soldiers carrying AK-47's and soviet style uniforms just like soldiers of East Germany did at the time.

Damm the poor shopkeeper. The tattered banners of the festival did well to showcase that happiness can be indeed be fleeting. To lose his parents in such quick succession must had been a traumatic experience. The manner of how he and Frankie met though lol. His friends fate though was tragic. MI having recruitors within the ranks is hardly a surprise. Looking forward to seeing how his training as a spy goes.

Tossed around by war and losing your parents and friends, Loid didn't have time to think about why's he fighting. I guess meeting Franky.. a person from the other side of the war gave Loid's life a new perspective. I knew he was faking his name when he already managed to fake his age, haha. He got to meet his friends that he thought were gone but that happiness didn't last long. Loid got a chance to make the real change when he was hired by the intelligence. I really wanted to see how he was trained by his Handler but the dream ended before that could happen. I guess we would get to see in the upcoming episodes. Who would have thought that Anya getting a tonitrus would inflict so much damage to Loid mentally !? 😅😅

This episode of Spy x Family was the darkest the series ever got, but did a great job in going in depth into the effects of War, and the impact it has on people, like Loid, a victim of war. Loid really had it rough. After witnessing his town getting bombed, he gets to know his friends have probably died, and needs to run away with his mom, all this when he was only a child. In that first attack, it's also implicit that his father was killed. When he finally was getting used to all that happened, and trying to live a "normal" childhood, the town he and his mom were staying in gets bombed, and this time around his mother was also a victim (but also his grandparents), leaving Loid all alone now. It's only natural he would seek revenge by enlisting in the military (while only being a teen) and actively participate in the war, killing a lot of Ostanians in the mean time... If this wasn't enough, he gets to reunite with his childhood friends one more time, just for them to be sent to a suicide mission basically... He blamed himself not once but twice for the death of his friends, that's just cruel... When he started to cry when he rediscovered them... You could really tell he wanted that confort of still having someone to rely on, from his childhood times, but that dream is now over :( We then see Loid getting recruited to the intelligence department of the military, where he works as a spy now, and having nightmares with the training he went through. I believe they already stated that in the first season, but we also get to see that Loid is working actively to preserve peace, since he doesn't want any other kid to go through what he went. This whole backstory was dark and hard to watch, but it portrays the reality of many children that lost everything to war... By the end of the episode I just wanted to give Loid a hug :( By the end of the episode, Loid wakes up, and sees he is in "Loid"'s house (interesting he doesn't even address Loid has himself, but rather as his character), and still recovering from remembering these hard memories, Anya just pets him. This is a great contrast to what was shown throughout the episode. Until then he was all alone, unsure of what to do with his life and what was making him kill all those people, but now he has a home, a "daughter" and a "wife", his own family, where he feels safe. In the end, he was able to pull through and start a family (even if it was for the "sake of the mission"). I don't know, the last moments of the episode of just seeing Loid spending time with his family made me emotional and tear up a bit. This anime never got so dark and go in depth of such complicated and serious topics, but it knew how to do it, and this last scene showed it. I also found interesting Franky and Loid knew eachother long before Loid turned into a spy, and showed that Franky was against the war way back in time. Since the 1st season if I'm not mistaken they have been hinting for Loid's backstory to be quite tragic, and they always showed that Loid was a war orphan, but still, knowing what really happened just hits different. I was always curious to know this backstory, and the wait was worth it, they did an incredible job portraying Loid's life, that lead to him having the motivations and attitudes he has now. If I'm being honest, I wasn't expecting for this backstory reveal to be so early on in the season, especially considering how both the opening and ending are focused in this part of the story. But it sure was an amazing way to start the 3rd season. I don't know if they are going to dwelve more into this later in the season, since I haven't read the manga, but I'm expecting more of the "usual" episodes for the next couple of episodes. With Loid's backstory, I think the only backstory to be revealed really is Anya's, considering they really never gave us much info to what happened to her, and like Loid, only hinted for her to have lost both parents, and after that becoming some kind of "lab rat" for cientists to try making her a psychic, but for some reason she was later discarted by them. Let's not forget how attached she became to Loid back in episode 1, when she finally received some love and affection... So, I'm not sure if the anime will have the opportunity to get this dark again (since I don't remember Yor's backstory to be portrayed so darkly either, although it's quite tragic too), but I would definetly love it. When Spy X Family develops more its plot it really is when it becomes a 10/10 anime, not that I don't like the more slice of life episodes, but the storytelling in this anime is amazing, and the setting is incredibly unique, and they know how to tell a good story, which just adds a lot to the anime! The new opening and ending hit way harder now too. The ending showing Loid with his friends... And the opening showing child Loid and Yor just being able to have a normal childhood... To end this gigantic post, just wanted to bring back one of the last scenes, when Loid asks Anya if she befriended Damian, and she confirms it, and Loid smiles, not because of the Strix operation, like Anya thinks, but because he's happy that his daughter is being able to make friends and have a normal childhood, something that was taken from him. Edit: Needed to add this screenshot, since it shows the difference in tone from the usual Spy X Family episodes

| @MenchiK1 it was already mentioned that he had only the code name Twilight and he assumed the name Loyd when he formed a family with Yor and Anya for the Mission. Yeah, I think you maybe right about Loyd's dad making an appearance later in the series. | It's rare for an otherwise not slice of life show to get serious and tackle matters like loss, war, identity crisis among other serious topics. When they do there's a clear tone shift from the usual routine and it shows in both characters and story taking a turn for the unexpected. In this case, an unknown man is confronted with his past memories and with his will being questioned proceeded to the carreer he has today. Of course, out of context this doesn't sound like the premise for this show which is why it hit all the harder once it started and finished. Next time we'll probably get back to another mission. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. |

Anybody else feel like they did not at all give enough time to this arc? Only one and a half episodes? Really? This is such good, healthy, actually meaningful material for Spy Family, and it’s already over? There is so much that got speed-runned over! I thought the episode was going so strong until the meeting with Loid’s old friends. They literally reveal that they are still alive only to kill them off AGAIN literally two minutes later. This plot decision is fine on paper, and it does a good job of signaling a shift for Loid as a character, but why did Endo decide not to actually show the campaign? In order for us to feel Loid’s disillusionment and grief from the war we need TIME. A soldier doesn’t decide to throw away the apparent cause of a war overnight. There are whole movies that are just about this kind of awakening (All Quiet On the Western Front is one example). Hate is not unraveled that quickly! It’s a process! A journey! A transformation! This critique also extends to the end in which Loid wakes up in his apartment. Again, on paper this is exactly the right ending. Using this war arc to recontexualize why Loid is doing what he is doing is brilliant, but it has come way, way too soon. The fact that we don’t even get any information about his first efforts as a spy is unbelievable to me. And that whole seen in which Loid commits to being a spy and sees children passing by him at the end was so weak to me. It’s not a bad scene on its own, but to transition out of hate and then all the way into this renewed sense of purpose does not happen this quickly. Ultimately, I really don’t understand why the story isn’t being told to its fullest extent. What do we have to lose here? Is it because Endo is afraid too much of a war arc is too big a risk? This arc was finally pushing spy family into new, meaningful territory. After the Code White movie, a film that contributed literally nothing to the overall story, and a second season with only one major meaningful arc (the yacht arc with Yor) we needed something like this war arc. To throw this away this early is devastating for this season, and for the story overall. If Spy Family is to continue for multiple more seasons (which I assume is the plan) then real risks need to be taken. With this arc Endo has shown he is capable of taking real risks, but why won’t he commit to it? Why won’t he challenge the audience to reconsider what Spy Family is? And why won’t he dive deep enough into his characters? While I remain optimistic for Spy Family’s overall direction, I feel that they really messed this arc up. I hope that in the future Spy Family will reach a form that is truer to its overall potential.
