The Loid character background story episode but an important one that highlights his past and how he became who he is today. You know, on the outside, he looks like any normal kid even with that soldier outfit on. The smile and stuff aside, this is how I did imagine what his character would be like.

Glad this episode didn't forget about Anya as well. Good to see Damian making his appearance too.

As much as I loathe the filler segments in this show, especially the school ones, a part of me kinda missed seeing the school setting. Some things never change though: Anya and Damian having their usual banter, Anya getting a bolt and all that. It’s really like nothing ever changed. Poor Lloyd though, dude fainted at the sight of that bolt on Anya’s chest lmaooo.

Speaking of poor Lloyd, And I mean it when I say “poor Lloyd.” To think all this time he was abused by his father like that, and his mom too from the sound of it. Tbf though, he doesn’t even seem like one of those typical horrible anime dads we’re used to. I mean, he gladly gave Lloyd some pocket money and even said he’d take him to the fair when he came back. To a certain extent, you can kinda see where the father is coming from. I don’t think violence is the right way to make your point, but he’s not entirely in the wrong tbh.

And the point made at the end there, the father isn’t wrong about war not being something you’d want to be a part of. I mean, all it really does is bring tragedy, so wishing for it just because you want to take part in it isn’t exactly something to be proud of.

If you take the physical abuse part out, Loid is very like his father in the study part.

As a kid, Loid used to dream about becoming a soldier and fighting in the war, but after this incident, he finally realized how ugly and painful war really is. It’s kind of heartbreaking, but it also makes sense why he decided to dedicate his life to stopping it.

Everything was shining and dumb fun you would expect from Anya, but then Lloyd's backstory striked and really hard. I can see his father wasn't a bad person, he was interested in the future of his son which was taken away from him. This series has some serious stuff (which I don't know how it managed to survive in the Shonen Jump) and I'm all in for it.

Finally the Loid backstory is being animated. The dissonance with the first half of the episode was too much though. Would work better as a standalone

I mean, Loid’s backstory is definitely some serious stuff, but it’s not something Shonen Jump would have a problem with. If anything, series like CSM, Fire Punch, and Dandadan push the limits way more lol.

Tale of two halves in this one. You have the Tonitrus Bolt segment of the episode which is one of my fave Anya x Damian moments so far. The way she gave up her handkerchief so Damian wouldn’t get in trouble and then didn’t let him take the blame when she got a bolt.. he’s gonna fall even deeper in love with her I love them sm. Ofc she did that to make Loid’s life easier and make Damian’s dad stop aiding the war effort, but still really cute lol.

The contrast between that and the Loid flashback couldn’t be more stark. Seen some people say that first half felt like filler, but I disagree. I think it flows into Loid’s backstory very well because look how Loid and Yor reacted to Anya coming up with a disciplinary pin from school compared to how Loid’s father reacts to him coming home from playing with his friends.. You needed to see how Loid is now to really understand how amazing it is he turned out that way after all the shit he went thru. Both situations are just innocent situations most kids will go thru, but totally different parental reactions.

In terms of what we saw from Loid’s backstory, I felt so uneasy watching it the whole time because I hate parents that don’t foster their child’s individuality and creativity and want to put them in a box. Obviously studying is important, but Loid was also a little ass kid. Playing with his friends is normal. I got so anxious when he lied to his dad for the money tho because if he ever finds that out.. luckily war actually broke out so maybe he won’t? The fact he had to lie to his dad to get a toy just shows the sort of toxic environment his dad created and that’s on him 🤷🏾‍♂️

Hell of a cliffhanger tho, soon as Loid was being told about the east not being all bad, they attack and presumably kill a ton of innocents. Next episode looks like it’ll be even darker.

A teacher handing out tonitrus bolts like candy? I guess every school has these types of awful teachers who take pleasure in making the lives of students hell. Sad that Anya got another bolt. Loid's mission got a little bit harder lol. But damn, he didn't need to pass out like that. Anya still has 6 lives left.

I loved the 2nd half of the episode. Never thought I'd see the backstory of Loid. But it's very interesting. His dad might've been abusive but technically he was right. Wars are foolish and a kid like Loid shouldn't have any interest in them. I didn't think he'd be the type to be into becoming a soldier as a kid. Either way, looks like Ostania didn't give him much of a choice by bringing the war to them. At that point, it might've made sense to Loid that Ostanians really are demons. I wonder how he might've changed his worldview later on to become such a successful spy. Because he clearly wouldn't be able to be one if he still believed all Ostanians were evil.

The next episode's also going to be all about Loid's flashback. I guess this whole season is going to be about that arc. That's cool.

The new ED was great. I loved the focus back on the Forger family.

I like that the typesetting of this episode was mostly the same as the previous episode. Did CR not change the software for Spy x Family? If so, good.

This flashback gave a lot of insight into loid's past, it seems like he was all normal kid. The circumstances changed him later on, but initially he had a good family, they probably knew the hearsh reality of war and hence wanted to keep Loid away from it by discouraging him. Although he took it in a negative way, but that is just how kids are somewhat dumb and rebellious and gullible. This shows that he had a simple upbringing and nothing too traumatic related to his parents which forced him to join war, until the last minute of episode tho. Can't wait to see next episode, I am fan of this pacing and that cliffhanger is a good one, reminds me of Re:Zero vibes.

Almost all lighting bolts go both up and down, alternately, usually several times.

"Mister Elegant."
A diss. but he did not get a bolt.

Young Loid. War ain't all that much fun. Neither are abusive fathers, but this one far from the worst I have seen in anime backstories.

loid is the taskmaster that keeps Anya on track lol. The mistress of discipline finally appears huh. Nice that we get to see Loid's childhood. Wars are indeed foolish but humans are dumb enough to keep starting them. Still that was a hell of a way to start that arc.

Yeah I figured those kids wouldn’t be making it to the end of the episode, but it didn’t click with me that the old building that used to be used by the army would play a role in their deaths until after it happened, of course that would be one of the first places bombed, if Loid had stuck around and didn’t feel guilty for lying to his dad, he wouldn’t be here in the present. And I’m gonna go ahead and guess Loid’s dad won’t be coming back, it’s sad that Loid’s last interaction with him was a lie but at least it was a happy moment from his PoV, and he did seem to care a lot for Loid despite hitting him the night before. Also, I was thinking this might be depicting World War 2 but East and West Germany wouldn’t be a thing yet, so I guess this is a completely fictional war instead, I’m fine with that.

This episode wasn’t all Loid backstory tho, the first half was a fun bit at the school with the introduction of a strict teacher Donna Schlag, I thought she was pretty funny but man she brought back some bad memories of strict teachers I’ve had in the past. And Anya was real one when she gave Damian her handkerchief, only the goober forgot the spare she claimed she had lol, so yeah Anya ended up with a bolt unfortunately, which gave us a funny Loid reaction, but we also saw Damian try to make things right when he realized what happened, a nice little showing of him being cool but Anya took one for the team, mad respect, but hey she gets a cake now at least lol.

And we got the ED finally, not sure where I’d place it among the previous ones but I liked it a lot, the visuals were very fitting for this episode especially.

One thing i think this series does excellent is remind us the absolute horror that being in war is. Mad respect for that. Only seeing the people of Westalis being happy in their everyday lives wreck my heart knowing what was coming for them.

This episode started with Anya trying to make Plan B a success by getting close to Damian but failing at Plan A by getting a tonitrus 😭😭
It was nice seeing young Loid but things suddenly took a turn with Loid having to witness the ugly side of war. He was too young to understand what his father meant when he wanted for his son to become a scholar than a soldier. Now I get why Loid is trying his best to maintain the peace between Westalis and Ostania. He doesn't want to witness the war once again that he wished never had happened.

Just when last season I was wondering when something like this would come, if it was going to be this season or not, we finally FINALLY get to see the Stella and Tonitrus tally that had been neglected for so long. It was a cheap excuse but it was something long overdue. The second part of the episode had to be up to the task then and tackling Loid's past was the way to go. The way he basically joined the army's spy team, his relationships and his views on war.

It's the start of a new mini arc and this time I'm actually engaged.

Really interesting to see Loid’s past for once.

I don't think that's his name. Google says that it means "going out." Odd that it was Japanese but with western letters, though.

The way his name is obscured throughout the episode, and in the manga too, makes me think that we will never learn. As he said in the very first episode, he abandoned his identity the day he became a spy. Maybe we'll learn at the very end, but not before.

I like the immediate sense of dread creeping around as soon as we cut to Loid's childhood. This will be the arc of the season. Also, Anya and Damian's little moment was unexpected. Damian has no chance against Anya. The show would thrive in a time skip scenario, then all the shipping would be a whole lot less, weird. I'm totally for Anya and Damian as a pairing, but damn they're just kids and there's only so much you can do with that. I imagine the social gatherings as a young adult would be dragging Damian around everywhere and Anya would remain a necessary "thorn" in his side, constantly stealing his affections and making him struggle with loving a commoner. Becky would still be simping after Loid of course.

That said, I wish we could have seen what the original director had in mind for the war saga... he worked on Kenshin after all, I desperately wanted him to tackle the West-Ost wars in the show.

Lmao the first half with the Tonitrus Bolts was one of the few segments I clearly remember reading from the manga, down to the handkerchief aspect. Comedic Anya and Damian moments are always fun to watch.

Loid's past....argh, I felt so anxious the entire time and the dread really hit when the missiles came crashing down. I'm gonna have to prepare myself with a handkerchief of my own for the upcoming episodes.
