That's the power of Oni in a nutshell. I guess Shiki had to learn that the hard way and in the first episode too.

This was actually a solid intro episode that didn't hide its intentions. The revelations to Shiki and his awakening changes his life dramatically. Also loved the style of the animation in this. It's how I'd imagined the look of the show would be like from the manga. Lot of potential from this first episode imo.

Lmao, like not even 5 mins into the episode and the secret which was supposed to be kept for years from the main guy is out. Normally, in a show like this they take their time with such stuff, but yeah, that ain’t happening here. This show isn’t doing something which hasn’t been seen before, in fact, this is OVERUSED at this point… “main guy is ackchyually super OP but was kept in dark about his powers and come to realize when someone close to him dies” - For an instance, here the guy has Oni blood and the old man had Momotarou blood, who of course was killed right in front of him.

Guy really transformed into something which I think I’ve seen somewhere else as well, just can’t quite put a finger. Though hey, that did the job. The action scenes are going to carry this one, but yeah, seems a bit of a mix of 2d and 3d both here. Doesn’t quite hinder the experience tbh, so nothing to fret about. Pretty basic first episode, and yeah they’ll go the school route as well from the next time… lol. OP sounds cool though, if nothing xD

Mangaka Yura Urushibara's lone series is yet another dark fantasy series to add to Summer's offerings, based on Japanese folklore.

The lazy son of the Ichinose family, Shiki, is quite the rebellious kid who got expelled out of school, much to his foster father Tsuyoshi's disdain. However, the presence of a Momotaro trying to steal Shiki away, Tsuyoshi managed to get him in time to whisk him away, and even that wasn't enough to evade capture efforts from the Momotaro Corporation's member Momoya Samidare, prompting a full-scale fight against his father, yet a former member of the corporation, Tsuyoshi Momogawara, and coincidentally Momoya's Senpai at that.

Despite putting up a good fight against Momoya, Tsuyoshi's fight to save his own son becomes the desperate move to awaken Shiki's Oni blood, which is the worst kind of enemy that Momotaros like Momoya are trained for to counter against a borne ferocious and decaying evil, which Shiki doesn't understand given his spontaneous transformation. That is the final straw in the coffin for Tsuyoshi to act as Shiki's shield, dying a valiant death that's all for his son to put up a fight against the Momotaro going forward.

The world of Oni, as Shiki's about to realize, is a world that he's going to be a big part of, living out their traditions.

The Oral Cigarette's OP sure feels the same, but yet, also different from their usual style.

A good start, really appealing.

FFS man, this has to be the most shounen thing ever. It’s like Blue Exorcist but way more forced. No like seriously, why did the corporation wait this long to kill him? Momoya knew MC had Oni blood from the start so why not get rid of him when he was a kid? And why didn’t they send more people to help? Like hello??? How do you have plot holes in your FIRST episode.

Oh and don’t even get me STARTED on this MC. This guy is already super unlikeable. The plot’s moving so fast no one even blinks at a minor having guns in Japan. This MAYBE could’ve worked if the pacing wasn’t insane and the backstory wasn’t so empty. Oh, and ofc, the MC goes berserk and unlocks his power, how original.

Overall, not impressed at all. And don’t even get me started on the ugly visuals… absolutely vomit-inducing.

So, Shiki was attacked because he has Momotaro blood, or is it "Momotaro Kikan," which is descended from oni? And these Momotaro characters possess powers, for example, manipulating black bacteria. Okay, this story's concept is interesting.

The fight between Tsuyoshi and Momoya was truly epic. Momoya's sword skills were meticulously edited, and the blood effects looked realistic. The moment Tsuyoshi was dying was also quite dramatic, really setting the atmosphere.

It's a standard shounen anime the main character witnesses a loved one's death, so they awaken a secret skill. I really like the demon design for Shiki; it looks fierce and cool. So, is Shiki's power the manipulation of blood?

Ngl this is like the most stereotypical battle shonen premiere I’ve ever seen lmao. Not really anything to take away from this other than the fact Shiki talked all that shit and was disrespectful af towards his pops “I’m glad we’re not blood related” “I wish I was adopted by a rich guy” etc just for him to sacrifice his life protecting him. Didn’t even know all the love his pops had for him.

We’ll see if this ends up doing anything particularly well, but for now, just a decent start. very shonen.

It wasn't a bad introduction. But I couldn't feel the charisma in any of the characters. It felt like they were just things happening on my screen. It reminded me Ao No Exorcist, But I needed more screen time to connect with this world. I hope it improves in the next episodes.

Sometimes it's better to not read the synopsis because of potenial spoilers, but in this case you could've figured as much. A sacrice or a person close dying in general is almost par for the course in shounen.

This one seems indeed pretty textbook. Kinda lacks soul and charm, you see shounen like this all the time getting axed. Not terrible by any means, it's just that you gotta set yourself apart from the fierce competiton in the vast sea of shounen. Uniqueness isn't necessarily required, for me it's enough if there's a mix of tropes I dig. Kaiju No.8 for instance is one that does tick many more of the right boxes.

There's still some aspects I like here such as the personality of the MC and the ending made curious. I'll see how I feel about this once the cast of characters has been established. For now it was a decent start and there's a bit of promise. It had to do a few things right if it managed to run successfully and get an anime.

I had no expectations and i'm still whelmed.

Can compare this easily with Ao no Exorcist episode 1 which did it much better. Visually leaves a lot to be desired as well (it might have stood out more in a non-stacked season without like ten better shounen airing).

Very high on the chopping block due to 2 cour, don't think this will go anywhere i like.

I think the state of being "originality" is overrated and hard to define. But I've to admit that there's not much of "originality" in this anime. Good thing I can survive on any bad anime as long as it has unlimited supply of hot guys for me.

compared to Gachiakuta that has a slow burn, this went full on racing into the shit and...I'm kinda like...wtf just happened?

Not an impressive start, kinda generic as all hell but having seen the blood power gimmick used since Deadman wonderland which is what mainly drew me to this. Let's give it the old classic rule and see what occurs.

Everything about this just screams average action shounen. Reminded me a bit of blue exorcist or any other story involving good demons and such. The episode felt somewhat incoherent and forced. Animation/visuals are okay, as usual I find the mix of normal and 3dcg off putting but as long as it isn't shit I'm fine with it. Not really that interested but we'll see.

Okay I have so many thoughts on this but one word truly describes it best: EPIC. The last time I was this excited was when I saw Naruto.

This first episode truly delivered a solid introduction not holding back on its intentions. Shikis dramatic awakening and the raw power of the Oni were perfectly executed. The animation style is exactly how I like it sleek and impactful especially during the action scenes. The fight between Tsuyoshi and Momoya was incredibly well done with fierce sword skills and intense blood effects setting a powerful atmosphere.

While it embraces its shounen roots it does so with incredible energy. Shikis Oni design looks fierce and cool and his abilities are captivating. Im super hyped for what is next with this series feels like it is gonna be a wild ride.

Definitely gonna give it a few more episodes before I decide on how i truly feel about it, but it sets up for a cool power system and story. The pacing was WILD on this and it is a very basic joe shmoe first episode. I really hope it takes its time a little more in the coming episodes and helps me connect to the characters a little bit. The CGI isn't bad but I was definitely disappointed to see all of the action in 3D. Just doesn't do it like some good 2D animation would have done it.

I have to start this by saying this first episode exceeded by far my expectations.

I went into this anime without really knowing what to expect, but I didn't have many high expectations.
But honestly, this first episode was really good.

This first episode was a good starting point for the series. It establishes well what Oni and Momotarou are, and their backstory, while giving us a clue that Shiki's father was actually part of the Momotarou, so that when he starts fighting the other Momotarou it wouldn't come as a surprise.

The setting is rather different from other shounens, but the way it gets executed ends up being similar to other anime. However, the truth is that it was well executed, so that's what matters at the end of the day. Is the story something really unique? Probably not. But so far it had a good Shounen start, and honestly, I'm all in for a good Shounen anime.

I actually liked how Shiki acted in some ways I didn't expect. Especially towards the end, when his father dies, I was expecting him to be super sorry about what happened and have that typical reaction we've seen in other anime, but no, we actually see some denial from him in admiting what just happened, and only when he realizes his father is dead that he actually starts realizing he had a lot to say. I found it interesting, because it honestly maintained the charactetization we've so far seen for him.
Yes, Shiki is yet another angsty teen that "hates" his father, but I mean, this is something quite persistent in teens, so I don't find that forced here or anything.

The revelation that Shiki actually had Oni blood was a bit "rushed", but I don't think it was bad, because we all knew that, I mean, it's literally the whole idea of the anime, and the first few minutes of the anime made that obvious, so I think it was a good choice to not waste a lot of time on that. And they later give Shiki time to have his own problem of processing all this information.

I was not expecting for Shiki to be so overpowered while being an Oni, I thought he would get saved by someone, but no, he was actually to deal with his father's companion, even if it was his first time fighting. Which just shows how powerful and dangerous Oni are.

The fact that the character voiced by noneother than Hiroshi Kamiya, appeared right at the end to "save" Shiki was a bit fortunate for him, but I guess if we think the Momotaru were able to find for some reason, that same reason must have led the Oni to look out for him too, since it seems they are going extinct.

I'm really curious to know how they are going to deal with all the Oni vs Humans philosophy, and if the old storytale is not been told correctly, or if Oni really don't have a single drop from humanity. The truth is that Shiki's father asked him to be strong, to be able to fight both Momotarou and Oni, so I guess many Oni probably won't be really good. But I'm curious. I also wanted to know why Shiki's father decided to adopt him, what led him to do that action, to see that baby and see it as a human, and not as an Oni.

Now, I must say, I was totally not expecting for the anime to have such animated fight scenes. They used quite some CGI for the fight scenes, but I must say, the CGI is actually good. You could perfectly notice when they switched from the 2D animations to the CGI ones, but since it looked good, it almost seemed like an artistic direction for the scene, rather than budget issues. And with all this, the fight scenes were actually quite good. I personally liked the moment where Shiki transforms into an Oni, and when the Momotarou looks upwards he isn't there anymore, and he just rushed to attack the Momotarou, it was really cool. So, I'm all up for them using this CGI for the fight scenes, it looked good, and made the scene feel much more alive, since we got a continous of moving frames.

Also, the OST so far has been fire, but that was to be expected knowing who is behind it.

And finally, of couse I have to talk about the opening. Like, WOW, IT'S SO GOOD! I honestly wasn't expecting less from The Oral Cigarettes, but I mean, they really exceeded themselves with this one. Not only the music is fire, I also quite liked the artstyle and animation of the opening.
So far, it has been my favorite opening of the season, and will probably end up one of my favorites of the year, if not my favorite (just want to give it some days to listen, I already listened to the full version of the song, and it's FIRE, but next week I'll know better). It's funny, because The Oral Cigarettes actually have done another anime opening recently, for Yakuza Fiancé, and that opening "Under and Over" is so different from this one "Overnight".

So overall, I was really surprised by this anime. The animation ended up being much better than what I was expecting, the setting seems really interesting (and it has a lot of potential), the story is being well executed. When a Shounen is done right, you can't go wrong, and this is a perfect case of that. I hope the anime can continue in this direction for the rest of the season, and if so, I'm sure this will end up as one of my favorites of the season, and probably of the year.
Really excited for the next episode!

Now I will go back into hearing "Overnight" by The Oral Cigarettes again, because THEY ALWAYS DELIVER (they are the sole reason I found out about this anime actually).

What sort of Blue Exorcist clone is this? Seriously, right down to the "guy who fights demons goes into hiding to raise secretly part demon son who is a delinquent and disrespectful to his adopted dad right before dad gets x'ed out and then part demon son is saved by a mysterious other guy that puts him in a supernatural academy" jesus

We'll see how the rest of the season turns out, but I'm betting this is a solid 5/4 star right here
