That guy literally comes out of nowhere… flying, almost choking Hiroshi to death, but yeah, the first thing that friend girl Kyoko asks is, who are you? I mean girl, that doesn’t even matter. You should’ve tried to escape, with or without Hiroshi lol. Seriously, Hiroshi is one unlucky kid, if you haven’t already felt it till now. I mean, previously, he was unintentionally doing things he never wanted to do, like hurting his family and friends, but yeah, not that stuff is over, he got kidnapped by someone who’s hell-bent on killing him, just so he could get his body and become human. Nube too is one unlucky fellow lol. Having to go through all of this just days after starting with a new class is wild. Tbh, I liked this one more than the first episode, probably because it kinda gives an idea about how things will be going forward. Blood and gore is appreciated, but the fact that the animation is holding well enough during the fights is a BIG plus. Just hope we’d get episodes where these people can take it easy at school too lol. Getting an average upbringing is necessary too lol, after all:) Nothing too much on OP and ED. Pretty plain tbh.

Okay no yeah, they’re definitely changing things here… like drastically. I remember this Kyousuke guy from the few episodes I watched back then, but I swear he did not show up as early as no episode two like what the actual hell??? I guess this pretty much confirms they’re not just trying to modernize the series, but also shift the entire tone. They’re stripping out what made the original the show, mainly the comedy, and turning it into something way more serious instead. Just… great. Also, forgot to mention it last episode, but the aesthetics in this show are actually kinda ass. The overall art direction and color scripting are so bland that I’m starting to understand why the show only looks visually solid in certain scenes. But whatever, our boy Hiroshi has bigger things to deal with than just the visuals of his show because… uh, did his head just come off??? I know it wasn’t actually him, but STILL... WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. Then Kyousuke transforms into his fox form to do what he came here for: take Hiroshi’s skull and destroy the human world. Which ofc, leads to a big fight between our boy Nube and Kyousuke, where, naturally, Nube takes the dub, with a little help from Hiroshi and Kyouko. This whole episode honestly made me realize that, while it’s nowhere near a faithful adaptation, one thing’s for sure: this more serious tone they are absolutely nailing. And honestly, it kind of works better than the OG’s comedy ever did. So uh, yeah sure, why not… fuck it, let’s go. I was tired of those OG episodic adaptations anyway, so I’m all for this xD

Shintenchi Kaibyaku Shudan: Zigzag's OP is decent, though I'll need a second listen to determine if it's ever good. Hiroshi isn't out of danger yet, as Kyosuke Tamamo now takes control of him, and Nube's Demon Hand giving him a lot more trouble than initially seen, any help rendered to Nube will only be a hinder. Because Kyosuke is quite the otherworldly entity with his Illusion Jutsu that keeps Nube busy while he escapes scot-free, he needs every help he can get, like Kyoko being adept at modern technology. And the way how Kyosuke operates his spiritual rituals, like China's 7 Northern Stars, all Nube needed is to pinpoint the last of the 7 stars' location. Everything seemed like a plan for Kyosuke to conduct Humanification to become a true Youko, as he sown the seeds on Hiroshi to see his development for a new human skull, which the night that he awakens to complete the ritual, sums the perfect night for his revival. However, as much as Nube exerts all of his efforts to stop Kyosuke, even almost turning into a demon, the youko Yokai will not be the last that both teacher and the two students will see. Chilli Beans's ED is alright and decent... Nube-sensei is making moves within the school alright, though this is just a "remake" in name.

They really rearranged and changed a lot just to cram in as much action as possible at the very beginning. I expected this shift toward a more action-heavy shounen style long before the remake started airing, and it’s not a change I welcome. While Nube always had its fair share of action, it was never really the core of the series. The staff talked a lot about making a “modern” version of Nube, and they sure did. Everyone has smartphones, classes are done using tablets, and there are e-scooters on the streets. But was there really a need to modernize it in the first place? Is it because the staff think younger viewers would be turned off by anything even slightly old-fashioned? Maybe they’re not wrong, but I don’t think the modern era lends itself to horror elements as well as older settings do. Then again, if they’re turning this into a hot-blooded action anime, I guess it doesn’t matter. There’s been no fanservice so far (and I doubt there will be any in this remake), but I’m really puzzled by Ritsuko-sensei’s outfit change. Sure, her old outfit was quite revealing, but it was also iconic. It’s a real shame they felt the need to change it, and so drastically. It doesn’t even retain a semblance of the original design. I moderately enjoyed it, but it simply didn't feel like Jigoku Sensei Nube.

Addition of technology aside, changes such as letting Kyousuke make an appearance for this double premiere in order to hook a modern audience were inevitable. It's hard to see why they would do that, yet switching things up like that may backfire when there's not much left of what made the series so charming in the first place. We'll see how it goes in the next couple of episodes.

I really loved this episode. I'm very surprised they introduced Tamamo-sensei so early! (his fox? kitsune? I used to call him kitsune, it's the same after all... his kitsune form was so cute and fluffy!!!!) he was ruthless but lacked a bit of depth... I hope they do his development right. Also, it is Ritsuko-sensei the one from the ending song???

MAAAAAAAAAN This takes me back! Well only roughly 10 years ago, but first exposure to this series was when J victory Vs came out and Nube was one of the characters. Checked out all of the animes in that game, and came along this anime. The original anime is quite old (the 1990s I believe) and surprised and impressed how they modernised it with smartphones and tablets. Its defiantlydarker and bloodier than I last remember, probably cause the OG anime followed closer to the manga than this is already.

Oh man that’s a really good OP and ED, definitely a big fan of those, especially Chilli Beans’ ED, the visuals go really well with it. And I can’t deny I would have liked more of a horror focus but I am liking the action so far, the way Tamamo fought with illusions was cool and I liked the collaborative effort from Nube and his students to defeat Tamamo, but I’m guessing bro isn’t down for the count yet. But damn it was very messed up that he wanted Hiroshi’s skull to become a perfect human, I’m honestly not sure how he could be more human that he already seemed but I guess it wasn’t good enough for Tamamo lol. And hearing folks talk about there being no fanservice yet, it’s unfortunate but I guess that’s a reason to check out the original once this ends, I can already tell I’m really going to want to lol. But yeah this was a nice two episode premiere, I like what I’ve seen so far, once again I’m hoping for some more horror but I’m down to see Nube going up against some crazy ghouls too, I’m also looking forward to seeing what each student is about, as well as the beautiful babe Ritsuko Sensei, she caught my eye right away lol.

I'm shocked that Nube's body got less fucked up in this version than the original's equivalent episode. Though seeing the fake Hiroshi getting decapitated AND impaled... that goes hard. Kai, you didn't have to adapt that... but I think it's fuckin' rad that you did. Now then... how will it handle the goofier and more heartwarming stories, like Yukime and the Zashiki-warashi's introductory episodes? EDIT: Two typos that were so distracting while rereading the thread that I fixed them. "that Nube body got" became "that Nube's body got", and "the fake Hiroshi get decapitates" became "the fake Hiroshi getting decapitated".

@Stark700 It's definitely cutting down stuff, the Youko guy comes in volume 2 and wasn't a doctor, he was a student teacher, more directly clashing with Nue. And if they're bringing in later characters, they'll have to cut the series down, even if it's split into 2 cour supposedly. Izuna, the exorcist that has a specialty with kudagitsune, isn't until chapter 76, probably nearly halfway through the manga By the time we saw Youko here in the manga, we'd had at least 4 students get focus, if not 5

@IzanaSolos The original manga is pretty episodic, so it makes sense they're condensing it for the major story instead of what can feel like just side fodder and interesting in the designs and sometimes the story involved, but there's always weird ones. Like chapter 220. Iykyk

@TheColonel76 Skimming over the manga, it feels pretty different in several ways, but maybe they're trying to give more depth to Tamamo, since he feels kind of flat from his general introduction, even when he shows up again, it becomes a whole deal with a fish youkai and its eggs with a limited time situation to defeat it by sunset. Assuming they're doing 2 cour of 12-13 episodes a piece, it may be severely truncated, but the original is also able to be promoted indirectly, which was 49 episodes, this would be shorter, but quality over quantity

@Lanhikari It feels like the original had some filler, but Tamamo showing up in episode 6 would suggest they're definitely cutting the adaptation down to more essential stuff for a running storyline, versus episodic stuff that seems more common if you analyzed the whole manga (which there's not even easy access to fan scans for the entire series, let alone an official release to my knowledge)

Illusion Jutsu was pretty op, Nube had no answer to it at the start. That crystal ball is really handy, seems to help Nube out whenever he needs it. Kyouko certainly has a lot of guts to help out in these situations. That fox yokai was relly strong but that was a great win with help from the kids.

It's impressive how they can balance a (relatively) lighthearted tone with stuff like the clock tower decapitation. That caught me off guard, sheesh. These kids might be a bit too chill with hanging around demons but I can't help but respect the proactivity in giving Nube a hand. Especially Hiroshi—doubt many would stick around after almost getting their skull ripped out.

@TheColonel76 He definitely wasn't a doctor, but I guess if we're talking about a fox with 6~ tails, he can probably blend into many jobs and it lets them have his connection to Hiroshi work relative to the first chapter and what the 99 Leg Bug factors into it (which I don't think it did when he enacted the plan in the manga, not sure if he was the one to implant him with the tantrum bugs). The weird exorcist priest guy in Hiroshi's flashbacks that had him bound seems like he might be a fake exorcist we see in the first volume and he pops up again, but it might be original character or a disguise for someone else, since I think there are other kitsune, plus oni, obviously

@MahiaErebeaNegi I'm curious on episode 3, since I feel like they'd have toned down what the manga has happen to Miku near the end with the gossip demon, because that had me squicking at just how bizarrely lascivious it was, for seemingly no good reason except to sexualize a 5th grader with a sizeable bust (that only grows as she presumably goes up to 6th grade at some point)

I'm guessing they decided to pack some of the later story arcs in the first few episodes to try and hook people early
@yamiyugi101 Sadly, it means Akira is probably not gonna get his focused chapter adapted, which means Miki is probably not going to have the romantic tension I see even just skimming through the first few volumes with Akira, like Kyouko with Hiroshi. Probably gonna get ones for Makoto and Katsuya, given they're present from the start and get focus, though the pink hair and purple haired girls in the background are Noriko and Shizuka, from what I gather. And my guess is we won't see Izuna, a popular character that's actually 14, until the second season,

I did not expect this much gore from the show but regardless of that, Meisuke Nueno, you have moved me. I'm tapped in all season for sure. Also, the nerve of the fox to call Nube ugly. Has he looked in a mirror his entire existence.

Nube's hand stump was pixel censored it looked like. Was Nube not knowing how to use his smartphone well a meta joke?

While smartphones obviously haven't exists yet in the original series (Well it's 1990s after all), the sequel series frequently shown Nube using an cracked phone and he sometimes has no idea how to use internet without asking his students for help (He doesn't even know what YouTube is until the students tell him the basic info lol). |

Okay, so the anime adapted the first chapter in episode 1, but here in episode 2, it skipped chapters 2-10 and adapted chapters 11 and 12, but is very different from the manga and 1996 anime (the 1996 anime was closer to the manga when adapting these chapters). So are they skipping all the episodic chapters and only focusing on ones with plot in it? If so, then this should be much more interesting. The manga and 1996 anime were episodic shows, so the remake changing it to a show with an overarching story makes it a better show honestly.

Back to back episodes aired today.
Nube is just fearless. He didn't back down at all and fought that wolf guy like a badass. Pretty strightforward episode with action. I do expect some of his students to get more highlight soon but all eyes are on Nube right now.
