I knew immediately that Kolbe was going to steal her work, but I'm glad that she found out about it very quickly. What's still surprising is the fact that she's Nowak's daughter since is kind of ironic that she's seeking something that usually her dad kills people for. However, I'm excited for her to join the gang. She'll be thrilled with all the research and information they have already.

Badeni lost some respect by not honouring the request ngl

@Sun_Chan It's probably for the best. Potocki reported Rafal anyway to the authorities even if he believes in heliocentrism.

It's a risk they shoudn't take.

I stumbled into watching this show last week and I gotta say this is genuinely a hidden gem. As someone who loves history and historical fiction, this is amazing.

Nowak being the father of Jolenta puts him in such a hard situation. Him trying to suppress his daughter's ambitions for his personal career and both of their livelihoods while also trying to encourage her to be a scholar has to be really hard to pull off.

She got scammed hard! I bet he thinks he's doing the right thing but his ulterior motives are brutal and I hope we see some justice eventually.

BTW never heard of this Seiyuu before, When I first heard her, I thought she was Hina Yomiya (VA for Anna Yamada (Bokuyaba), and Minami (Oshi no ko)).
She sounds great.

This was a heavy episode. Felt so sorry for the girl. That smart and only 14, must be a witch indeed :).
Guy who stole her work. I wonder if he really cares for her, or he's just bullshiting deliberately. I mean, considering the era he may honestly believe what he said, without ill intent.
The girls lucky though. Even at the end, she's lucky the duo was conveniently at the right time and place as she's posting her answer. And, she's lucky those two couldn't care less about her sex (I believe).

For example, by having the daughter do both parts.
She says her line and then a short silence and she retells her dad's reply using indirect speech, then she replies to that, and so on.
It's not even an uncommon trope in anime.
Though it's generally used to just not dub that one person lol
But that would be a neat way to use the trope to hide a character's identity.
It's not like it won't be revealed later so it wouldn't even be overused.
Welp, they missed chance to do that I guess

It may have been another option to use letters as a communication tool between a father and a daughter.

Or skip the meeting all together. But the letter would be better. Now, the giant plot twist is spoiled. They did ruin it
@Baranka02 Another option would be to make Nowak sick during that time and have a hoarse and hardly recognisable voice.

In this episode, we’re introduced to a new character, Joletna, who has a talent for astronomy. However, as a woman, she’s denied the chance to pursue her passion fully. We see her struggle as she has to give up claiming her work, torn between what she truly believes and what society forces her to do much like Rafal, who also grapples with contradictions between his ideals and his actions. The cliffhanger was perfectly executed. Leaving me impatient for the next episode. This is, without a doubt, my pick for Anime of the Year.

Man, WHAT THE FUCK THIS ANIME STORY IS FUCKING CRAZY. After seeing the two originals writers of the theory, we get told in an ultimatum that this group of people will be the one explaining the theory of Earth's moving, I really expected from the first death that it's gonna be people leaving their learnings to another person and the cycle repeats. BUT THIS ISN'T ONLY IT. We get to know that Jolenta father is Nowak (duh we hear the voice) and from what we see at the end of the episode, these three may be the trio to reveal this religion-shattering discovery breakthrough and they might fight Nowak in the future, that sounds like a crazy plot twist and very epic. I also like how Jolenta was introduced in the anime, this anime don't hesitate to show thinking errors and fallacy in the medieval age, how religion can overpower someone way of thinking and not accept the truth, I think it's a great plot point to introduce a woman, that makes the iregularity and difference of the group from everyone else even more big, a woman can become a genius. I wasn't sure what way the anime was going after Rafal death, but this does seem like a very good turning point. Excited to see what they are gonna do for a whole cour and a half left, writing is fire.
I like everything, ok

Aww poor Jolenta man misogyny back in the day was fucking atrocious that shit was a cesspool filled with men who couldn’t handle a woman doing what they could do, Kolbe and his way of treating Jolenta may come off as he’s just looking out for her but nah he’s actually one of those misogynistic men, I have a feeling that the old priest is willing to listen to her but we’ll just have to wait and see for now

Badeni needs to cool it man bros a pain in the ass man but it’s I can’t be mad bc it’s Gojo’s VA playing him and all I hear is Gojo😭😭😭😭

I think the most shocking part from this whole episode is the fact that Jolenta’s father is NOWAK!! Ok we don’t know yet but come on it’s his VA that we can hear but imma still be surprised when they show him man bc wdym he’s rooting for his daughter who’s into astrology???🤨 I like to think that Nowak changed after dealing with Rafal, Rafal was really was him man🔥

Things were so much worse back then, people weren’t allowed to freely pursue research, and women were even forbidden from trying. I felt heartbroken when Jolenta started crying after realizing how unfair this world is and began to lose hope. Luckily for her, everything is about to change.

Badeni won't even give 10% of the findings to the person stated in the letter and asks Oczy to sacrifice his entire share? That egotistical prick! I don't like him anymore.

Poor Jolenta. Pushed to the side and not "allowed" to learn because she's female? And then her mentor takes her treatise and passes it off as her own "for her safety"? That plagiarist is too good at gaslighting. Geez this makes me so angry.

Interesting to find out that Jolenta is Nowak's daughter, I like how the characters that have been introduced are interconnected in some way. I also see implications with Jolenta delving into subject matter that is controversial especially considering who her father is and I wouldn't doubt for him to sacrifice her if it came to that....

Anyways, for now Jolenta gets to meet Badeni and Oczy whom I'm sure appear to be intimidating figures as they approach her but she'll find out that they're friendly.

YESSSSSSS I had an inkling Jolenta was the daughter of Nowak (Kenjirou's voice is just too iconic to not recognize). I am so intrigued on how Nowak will have to confront on whether to put the Church first or his daughter (since we know from the first act that he is deeply fond of her), assuming she begins to really look into astronomy as well. At this point, she is most definitely Rafal's age and I hope he'll be reminded of Rafal's conviction based on her own determination to pursue the truth.

And the way Kolbe is damn shitty for taking the credit for Jolenta's work but unfortunately not being entirely wrong given what we know about how women were treated during that time... Jolenta under the wrong crowd would have absolutely been cast aside purely for the fact that she was a woman and we've seen that she is not allowed to directly pursue an education in the classroom. And yet, teling someone so young yet ambitious to "Give up on that. It's the way things are" with a smile is so deeply disheartening.

So much to think about for this episode. First, I don’t think I like Badeni right now. I hope he grows into a more likable character, because saying stuff like he refuses to be a stepping stone for a future generation seems super disrespectful to everyone who has died thus far. Not to mention the fact that he won’t even honor a 10% profit request to the researcher who changed his whole life. He’s smart, but he seems kind of scummy. Second, I empathize with Jolenta’s struggle. She deserves so much more respect than she gets, and I’m guessing she will be joining our characters in proving a heliocentric model. (8.5/10)

Jolenta being at the wrong place at the right time to hear about astronomy, she's a lucky girl.

While the astronomy findings are still incomplete, Oczy wants in to finish what Rafal started from Badeni, bringing him straight to the hidden box, but leaving the 10% out because of personal reasons, which Oczy can cover that, though it will dishonour future generations. But to condemn Jolenta's request to learn the subject matter, only to be rejected, the assistant for Kolbe sure is making small improvements to understand the treatise, and that's all she's going to learn...if she didn't stood up for herself.

With Jolenta's treatise approved by Count Piast, but submitted in Kolbe's name, he's a real jerk, but because misogyny existed in the old ages, and this was the result as such, even with the Count himself questioning her if it's true, which she gave into the pressure and omitted her name out. Jolenta might be thinking of her next treatise, but it's clear that she wants her name out in some form, and a request for theoretical astronomy captures her attention. And despite her thinking that it's wrong to indulge into astronomy, meeting both Oczy and Badeni and answering their problem, certainly will turn her into the right direction.

The 3 theoretical people, combining their brain cells together, will be a force to reckon with.

Ain't no way the girl actually a daughter of Tsuda. That's the twist for sure, he's handling a karma right there. But for more importantly, dude Badein really give such a selfish condition to the innocent Oczy. Fuckin hell he's so greedy turning down Rafal wish with the profit. Idk if its gonna turn out badly, but i still wish for Otzy at least gives more argument to the face of those greedy monk. Rafal can have a one or two words against him, pretty sure....

Well aside that, still interesting what the girl can do to lift up the theory onto more publicly. Must be pretty tough considering the era was so dark that time. But she still have God's bless of luck, right? Move the earth. Move the world.

Inaccuracy in this episode. The globe axis should be vertical, not angled. The offset axis was only added after heliocentrism, because it's at an angle with the sun's orbit

Man I felt it when Kolbe with the most obvious look on his face said, "of course, I did it with my name on it".

Seriously, if at that moment Jolenta would've slapped the life out of him, that might have become THE most satisfying thing to happen, but yeah as if. She can't do that and it's wrong to expect this out of her as well, especially in those age and times. I'm just glad she met Oczy and Badeni in the end. Waiting for Nowak to find this all though...

Badeni is one with unique personality, he really doesn't care about the wishes of the ghosts.

Oczy has a good heart on him.

Jolenta's position is understandable. If she shows herself as superior to males, her life can very well be in danger by several false accusations. But even still it's not right to accuse Kolbe, after all she's the one who backed down after, when a chance arrived.

Conflicted on how I feel about Kolbe. He's not wrong at all considering the times. And he may have meant full well with pure intentions... or he may not have. And if he meant well with pure intentions, it only came across as disgusting because of our modern perspectives, and because it hurt Jolenta (also, because he went about it the wrong way, blindsiding her). To him who lived a decade+ in this world, what he did was only natural, common sense from their sociocultural perspective.

Her being conflicted, crying and gaslighting herself after her idea was stolen and had to lie about not writing her material. That felt absolutely true to reality.
Though I could see that twist from mile away, because you can't have a good religious drama without good dose of misogyny.

This is probably one of the few times where having such a distinct sounding voice actually DOESN’T help the story with regard to Nowak being her father: Everyone can immediately hear who it is, something that was probably a lot less obvious in the manga. But you can’t “substitute” a different voice since you’ve already established him. It’s a side effect of being really good at your craft, there wasn’t really a great solution. It’s just unfortunate in this case that the timbre of his voice is so unique and unmistakable that everyone’s immediately picking up on it.

Very interesting episode for the introduction of Jolenta. It really shows how difficult it was to be a woman at that time, especially an intellectual. It also makes you think about how many writings we still assume were published by men when in reality a woman may have authored them and just used a man's name to get them published.

In any case, Badeni and Oczy are now starting to work on the problem and have asked the city's intellectuals to solve it without realizing it's already been solved... and especially not by a teenage girl.

It tackles about the prejudices against women, giving them unequal footing on things even though they are capable of it. I wonder how many women were forgotten in history, and how there ideas were never heard in the world.

The show surprised me with the way it handled Kolbe. I saw the twist of him having submitted it under his name before it happened, but the more interesting part was that, he wasn't doing it out of malicious intent. He genuinely assumed Jolenta already understood that was the terms in which it was going to be submitted, and is surprised to hear she didn't. He seems like the guy who isn't actively holding overt misogyny at heart, but is passively reinforcing the patriarchal structures that exist, simply because it's the path of least resistance. Basically what even most of the "good" people in an unjust society would be like.

Author also has interesting things to say about it.

Q:——Is the scene where Jolenta is discriminated against by sex in the research institute related to reality?

A:——I think this is the most realistic description. In Volume 3, Kolbe put his name on Jolenta's paper. At first, I simply wanted to describe him as a stereotyped sexist. However, after discussing it, it seems that it certainly should be such a character if people want to describe discrimination against women nowadays. As a man, I am worried that if I write about sexism in a stereotyped way, it will become a condescending and cold preaching description that evades responsibility. Therefore, I want to express through this character that women's rights are important, but when the discrimination consciousness at the bottom of his heart is revealed, it will become a character with sexist colours. Rather than saying that the character is bad, it is better to say that because of the social structure. I think this kind of description is better this way.

Kolbe was considered a very progressive character in society at that time, or a liberal who defended women's rights, but I wanted to describe the cruelty shown by such limitations.

I myself must have unconsciously a kind of modelism (patriarchy), or a Kolbe-like side, so this image was created with my reflection and self-blame.
