Did you eventually go back and watch the earlier seasons, or did you just roll with it?

Happened once because I didn't realize it wasn't a first season. Watched the first season after (or maybe went to first season after a couple episodes, don't remember).

I did end up watching the 2nd season of Kiniro Mosaic before the 1st one, as it was a bootleg DVD i bought pretty early into my Anime phase, and i didn't know that it was the 2nd season.

Funny question mate, isn't that how you're supposed to watch anime?

I always skip the first season (or two), otherwise it will make absolutely no sense if you have the full context, you need to uno-reverse 'dat shit bruh

I watched episode 10 once first of a show, but that was on accident...
I played Assassin's Creed Brotherhood first in the series, that's the best I got.

That'd be really stupid to do....In most cases. I jumped into Lupin starting with the 2015 season, and never felt the need to watch the older stuff. Each season seemed to be more or less self-contained. I did a similar thing with the Baki Netflix series and I only kinda felt like I was missing out on important prior info.

I think the most justified was Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's. I had watched a lot of Duel Monsters and some of GX, only the 4kids version for both, but I absolutely didn't need either to watch 5D's. Least justified is probably Gundam Unicorn and Gundam Thunderbolt. I don't know how much prior knowledge of the main Gundam timeline I needed, but I felt like I should have had at least a little more than the basics.

Yes, I watched Aquarion Evol before the original Aquarion, it seems a lot of people did because Aquarion Evol is ranked higher in popularity than the original here on MAL.
@-Fantastical- I can tell you, you aren't really missing much if you haven't seen it. Even as a mecha fan, putting aside any connections to Evol, not really worth watching. Apparently neither is the one after Evol, but I haven't seen it, so I can't make any judgement.

Not that that you have to take my word at face value.

I feel like the only anime where you could do that are anime whose main audience is kids like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade, etc. As well as long episodic anime like Sazae-san, Detective Conan, Crayon Shin-chan, etc.

Never did such a weird thing before. The closest to this was watching Tamako Love Story, and eventually realizing there was Tamako Market before it. And then rewatching TLS right after.

@SealInFinnish Would that count? Cause I watched Fate/Apocrypha first out of the Fate series but I started it at like episode 1 like a normal person. But given Unicorn and Apocrypha are mostly self contained narratives with it starting and ending the series overarching storylines and character arcs from episode 1 to the final episode. Then those might not count...

It not like say watching season 2 of Unlimited Blade Works and watching it on from there with the prior 12 episodes and all the substantial stuff you need to know for the context of the specific character arcs and storyline being told effectively missing.

@Timeline_man DBZ is so different from Dragon Ball I don't even think it matters that much. Compared to if you started DBZ in the Buu Saga and just had no information from previous ones.

Thrice that I can remember. I heard a lot about Saint Seiya but I didn't want to watch 50+ episodes. So I watched the finale OVA's. I was able to figure out enough to enjoy myself. It ended up being 3 different multi episode OVA's over 5+ years of production. I wish the final finale hit harder, but it was enough for me to get the gist of why Saint Seiya is such a big deal.

Last year, I went in the opposite direction and watched Sailor Moon S after reading an article about the best episodes in anime of all time. I dabbled in the dub as a child, but I didn't watch enough Sailor Moon to really be a fan or remember most of the story beats. Since Sailor Moon is famous for filler, there was no way I was gonna watch two seasons beforehand plus filler. I even had two different filler guides to get me through Sailor Moon S.

Sailor Moon S has a well deserved MAL score. I wish the version I watched last year was available for me when I was watching Trigun and Outlaw Star back in the day. It was incredible, even with the three filler episodes I watched by mistake. It was much more hype than Saint Seiya, at least when it came to transformations and music, plus Eudial was a fantastic villainess. I might go back and watch some filler episodes to get more time with her.

The internet said the anime filler filled adaption was better than Sailor Moon Crystal so I did some research. Just like Sailor Moon's manga and anime, the struggles behind the scenes were very real. So much so that season 3, the parallel season to Sailor Moon S was deemed the only season worth watching. So I watched Crystal season 3 right after S and witnessed a miracle.

A straight manga adaption that was inferior to a filler fest that took creative liberties where ever it could. Admittedly, the level of the staff doing the two different anime were incomparable. Revolutionary Girl Utena changed anime forever. Golden Time did not. Sailor Moon S is poetry and harmony. Incredible music, hype transformations, funny comedy, and a heroine just as brave and crazy as any notable shonen MC. Crystal was Naruto-lite ninja music and a mopey group of sad sacks that don't even get as upset about the end of the world.

I don't know how many other anime I would blind watch a second or third season of. But if you are willing to give it a shot, I recommend three anime.
Gundam Build Divers: Re;Rise
World Trigger season 2
Radiant season 2

The first seasons of all those anime had individual high points, but the second season of two of them is all killer no filler. Re;rise is a redemption for one of the worst Gundam properties ever put to screen. As a whole it is definitely worth your time.

@Blackfire2340 DBZ takes no time to introduce the Z fighters or Goku, or why it'd be shocking that he has a kid, why no one seems to like Piccolo, or how hard it actually is to fly in this world. I reject your argument. also it's only called DBZ outside of Japan, it's all just Dragon ball

It depends on what year you watched it in. We only got the anime they showed us unless you were super about that life. You can't say you chose to watch a sequel before the OG when you didn't even know the OG existed. Newer anime fans can watch either one first.

I think both of y'all are correct. Dragon ball part 2 slowly but surely made almost everyone from part 1 into obsolete cameos that popped up to do one big thing then disappear. The Universe is the ring this time not earth and there are a lot of new characters that take up screen time. In a real sense, you miss less by never having been exposed to characters that were important story characters in the past.

On the other hand, those deep bonds and connections from part 1 define Goku from the 21st martial arts tournament to all the cameos that give up ki to kill Kid Buu with a Genki Dama. If you just focus on Krillin, his journey means so much more if you know about his past as the weakest monk.

Akira Toriyama was a genius that created a story in two parts that can be appreciated equally.

I always thought it's a pretty stand alone show, so I am one of those who only watched Evol.

Also only watched Kuroshitsuji season 2.

And watched Clannad After Story first, but then went back to watch Clannad and After Story again.

It has happened many times before in the past for me. Mainly due to availability.

Some examples are like "Violence Jack: Evil Town". Where I rented this from a local video rental store on VHS to watch back in the 90s before I actually had a chance to watch "Violence Jack: Slumking" simply due to availability.

Another example would be watching "Lupin III: Part II" before ever getting to experience "Lupin III". I just happen to have the privilege of having a father who use to record "Lupin III: Part II" on VHS back in the late 70s and early 80s when ever we were in Japan. I was able to enjoy the stuff he recorded off Japanese TV back then when my father handed down his entire VHS tape collection to me back in the late 80s.

Another example was watching "Time Stranger" the movie on DVD back in the early 2000s for the 1st time ever before getting the chance to complete the "Macron 1" Anime series from the 80s. It's due to availability and the limited access I had to VHS bootlegs in the 90s. Experiencing only a handful of episodes of this Anime series before the digital age of media.

An extremely common western example is with "Golgo 13: The Professional" movie from the 80s. Where the entire "Golgo 13" Anime series that aired in japan from the early 70s isn't even in the MAL database. I doubt there is any User on MAL who would say they experienced watching this entire Anime series that literally only ever aired on TV in Japan back in 1971.

A more modern example though would be with "The Ancient Magus' Bride" where I literally didn't even know for quite a while that "The Ancient Magus' Bride: Those Awaiting a Star" OVA even existed that actually released before the main Anime series.

Happened all the time when I was still watching on network TV.

Since then only one I can think of is Hataraku Maou Sama: I watched S2 part 2 without realizing it was part 2 (because it was labeled "2nd season" but the actual difference between the full S1 and 2 was an exclamation mark, apparently) and was really confused but just went along for the ride. Ngl it was pretty entertaining doing that. Still haven't watched part 1.

@Timeline_man @MFDOOMED

Except none of that really matters because so many of the Z fighters end up just being fodder outside of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo in DBZ. Especially after Namek. Piccolo is about the only character that you would really get more info on, but DBZ already does enough to build character backgrounds while also referencing what happened in Dragon ball.

Dragon ball is cool if you want an adventure-like story, but I wouldn't say it improves your viewing of DBZ at all. Compare this to someone watching the new Bleach TYBW, but didn't watch the 2000s anime. Or God forbid those people who skip all of pre-time skip One Piece. You would be completely lost on Soul Reapers, Quincies, Hollows, Bankai, character abilities etc. The material in the 2000s anime for Bleach is still relevant in TYBW, compared to Dragon ball where it's mainly just going deeper into the Z fighter past adventures.

This isn't to say Dragon ball is bad or anything, I'm just saying if you didn't manage to watch it before Z then you didn't really miss that much. I don't think knowing some callback characters during a Spirit Bomb would magically change your opinion of the scene.

@AnimePedestrian it counts since unicorn is technically a direct sequel that follows many plotlines (and supposed themes, some were interesting some were just the writer not understanding newtypes)

@Blackfire2340 But technically Dragon Ball IS the "1st season" of the whole Dragon Ball series (both in chronological and broadcasting terms). The universe is the same, the characters are the same, the storyline is the same, so no matter "how different" both installments may be or have been perceived by any individual watcher, if you watched DBZ before original DB, you were unequivocally watching a 2nd season before the 1st one.
