No other anime this season has even come close to this level of quality, this anime is truly a MASTERPIECE! 💯🔥 Anyone who says otherwise should get their eyes checked tbh.

This episode once again leaves extremely conflicted. I'm not really a fan of the cast so far besides some potential maybe being there with Tokiyuki's character to grow, but Suwa's character and the comedy involved with the cast is fucking terrible and insufferable to the point of me not caring for the rest of the cast so far. The animation efforts with the comedy are definitely there and I can admire that, even if it makes everything feel a lot more insufferable and overexaggerated as a result. Even the antagonist for this episode, Godaiin was so over-the-top and corny where the animation and his overexpressiveness made me more annoyed with the actual show itself than just celebrating its animation with him particularly. But the actual episode did deal a bit with Tokiyuki's trauma a little and the fact that his brother was also screwed and betrayed, alongside his willingness to kill and take a step forward to getting revenge was really good and the actual action scenes looked absolutely sublime and some parts were even better than the high bar that the first episode set.

The series and its brutality and certain themes for Tokiyuki to overcome are cliche but have high potential here but the tonal shifts and the overall overexaggerated, comedic nature of a lot of the scenes, cast and villains seemingly are so dreadful to watch and sort of ruin the amount of fun I'm watching with the action here. It's easily the most conflicting start I've felt with a show this year, made even more conflicting since Yuusei Matsui did write one of my favorite series of all time and the comedy there I found more than tolerable and even liked in comparison to this. There is so much animation gold here and I'm glad that the second episode kept up with the quality but man, if the cast and comedy was better and had more to offer, this might be a contender for best anime of the season for me. Sadly, the faults are very, very hard to ignore with how 'in-my-face' they are so am not feeling that way so far. Epitome of love and hate so far lol.

I totally agree with this

Man, some pretty brutal scenes were shown which shows how harsh life was back then but the deception was on another level especially by the uncle (glad he's gone). While the gag comedy was a bit off-putting I suppose it is used to offset the harshness.

Yea, the comedy is only a bit worse than that ridiculous deer anime, but it destroys that overhyped series in every other way. The 2 Doga Koba anime and this have been a work of art so far, with this somehow looking the best.

I think the comedy is good. The banter between Suwa and Tokiyuki is great and everything from the uncle while grim also worked really well in a visual comedy sense. I am a huge fan of the lightheartedness intervowen with the brutal violence of feudal Japan. The beheading of Kunitoki was shocking and unexpected but sets the stage for a really interesting journey.

This show is such a mess of amazingly creative animation, grotesque over-exaggeration and occasionally off-putting art style. Not to mention the unremarkable writing and weird humor and tangents.

I get a little disturbed and annoyed at times, but I'm also constantly amazed, and I kind of respect it.

I love visuals and how it looks hand drawn. Story is also interesting. But I absolutely HATE comedic moments. I would rather have whole anime in a serious tone and comedy only where it can be done with taste. But here we have excessive shouting which is supposed to be funny. How comedy is handled in this show seriously damage my enjoyment from watching. It's like suddenly smelling poop while eating your luxurious meal.

I had similar problem with Demon Slayer. Loved first episodes which were dramatic and serious. But then they added screaming dumb and dumber which made me not even watch more seasons/movies. Just couldn't stand them and their forced unfunny comedy.

The show is finding its footing; this episode was tremendously enjoyable!

I enjoyed the developments in the story, as well as meeting new, fun characters. The plot with the evil uncle was good; I found its resolution to be very satisfying. That action scene was gorgeously animated, and it had so much character!

First of all, Coming form me this is the best show of this season only if they keep this pacing and the hold on to the animation.

secondly, I can't find a single flow in this anime, the first ep was perfect it shows how a first episode should be done to tell viewer about the world and about the people they are gonna flow through the anime the animation is so good and they make different styles of animation in just one ep whereas other anime can't even execute one style with proper animation, as per the story I have seen and heard this type of story 100 times but it's still delivers man, thats who influential it is,and as per everything else the comedy is on point the pasing is on points and the ending and opening has a solid kick to it
and most importantly I feel emotionally within 2 eps when a character is dying or being angry on characters who is betraying the kingdom and fingers crossed they don't mess up the ending or the pasing of this anime

(P.S.- why it is so criminally underrated nobody is talking about this ..)

So disappointing.

The art style and animation are amazing, the plot is fascinating, but the constant shoving unfunny comedy into serious scenes is not only jarring it's incredibly annoying and unfunny.

Sticking with it for the art and animation, but already downrated it from a 10 to a 7, as the "comedy" is horrendously bad, and so missplaced.

shotacon bait with the priest again

but the action in this episode is great

love the vibrant colors of this anime the color designer did wonder egg priority too according to his mal database page
@deg If every interaction and joke involving the priest and the MC is seen as "shotacon bait" by you guys, I think the real problem is something unresolved within you guys...

you guys are overreacting with the "comedic timing" and "tonal shift" thing. both episodes were very solid and balanced well all the elements. so far is easily a 10/10
@Kvnssin Western anime fans and the inability to deal with japanese blend of dark and comedy, name a better duo, it was the same shit with Kimetsu no Yaiba.

@Andrzej2 That's a "you" problem, both series you're talking are big popular with japanese audience, so it's pretty obvious the problem it's not with the anime or the comedy itself.

@Shinuki_n_Reborn

Because for some reason Japanese often think that characters screaming loudly is a peak comedy. I don't share this view and I have the right to voice my opinion.

Just because majority supports something it doesn't matter that it's right, are you stupid?

Still loving the art, the unusual style, and the major characters. I do have concerns about what sort of personality they're trying to portray on the shaman dude (mostly I think he's fantastic, but a couple of the jokes this episode were uncomfortable), but other than that this is a rare treat of a series so far.

Looks like the "comedy" is dragging the ratings down for this as it's now dropped below an 8.

It's a shame, as everything else about this is phenomenal, but the comedy is so unfunny and so annoying, as it constantly pops up in the most heart-wrenching segments and consequently drags you away from any emotions you might be feeling.

Consequently, every episode so far has been like watching two completely different anime - with styles of telling the story that just don't mesh at all.

In general I don't mind tonal shifts, switching from comedy one moment to a more serious tone the next or vice versa is actually something I really love about some anime. The problem with Elusive Samurai is the comedy's not all that funny. And especially for me the more cartoonish gags with modern elements in this episode such as the little priestess holding up a printed sign, the trains, etc are like a terrible record scratch that drags me right out of the story.

Fortunately I loved everything else about the episode. I was not expecting Tokiyuki to get revenge so soon. The battle was fantastic, both visually and in that the retainers couldn't just overwhelm the uncle at the start and they had to change tactics. That the priest facilitated this and saw this potential in Tokiyuki is the first time I've been interested in the character. Has he had his eye on Tokiyuki for a while and saw this bloodbath and chaos as an opportunity? He's always acting like a big goofball but he's also at times had a slight somewhat sinister feel about him I can't quite put my finger on.

Visually, it's great, but the cast so far...yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about that. Maybe I'll get used to everything "weird and quirky" as the series progresses

@Teufel I just wanna say that while stuff in the future is used as a gag, it's not just randomly put there,Yorishige see's glimpses of the future, so it is actually part of the story, it's more important later on.

Loving the series so far - the voice acting is very good and still always get a laugh a picturing Gojo's face on the priest during the episodes.

OMGGGGG I CANT WITH THE ANIMATION MAN LIKE CLOVERWORKS IS PUTTING IN FUCKING WORK WITH THIS ADAPTATION WHY IS EVERYTHING ABOUT THE ANIMATION SUCH EYE CANDY!?!? I love it man this episode gave me chills with how cold the animation was😩🔥🔥🔥

I like how Kojiro and Ayako liked Tokiyuki right off the bat and they didn’t dislike him at first I thought they’d be against serving a lord who’s lost his entire family yk

Poor Kunitoki I felt so bad for him when his uncle was beating his face in that’s why bros face was so bruised when those 2 guys were talking about his execution bro didn’t deserve that man😔

The fight with the uncle was amazing man I like how all 3 of them couldn’t take him down since they’re just kids it’s realistic that a child couldn’t be able to take down an adult that’s trained with the swords for years nice touch for me tbh

The 3d camera movements in this episode went hard man I swear there’s so much good stuff from this episode that I can’t talk about all of it without getting tired of typing haha I’ll just say this episode had a lot of good animation cuts especially the parts where the swords were clashing during the fight with the uncle Kojiro and Ayako went OFF🔥🔥🔥

I’m so glad Tokiyuki killed off his uncle that shit was so satisfying to see all for the reason that I thought this show would make Tokiyuki someone who’s too nice to kill but nahhhhh my boy is a KILLER🤣🙌🏽

Shizuku’s eyes looked so fucking pretty man she has the best eyes in this show up there with Tokiyuki😩🔥🔥
