Fruits Basket by a long shot. Though Ookami to Koushinryou is doing a great job.

As in best show that is a remake? or the show that remade the show the best?

Cause FMAB would be the former, but since I like 2003 just as much (probably even a little more), despite it being great, it doesn't really improve the show. It just makes it something completely different.

But If we are talking about the latter, it's probably jojo part 3!

I haven't seen the OVA, but from the clips, it doesn't get the style, and despite the animation being really good, I think missing that style is enough to easily put it below.

I would assume fruits basket is also way better than the original, but I haven't seen said original so it's hard to say.

@KitsuFrost I would argue it was also worse in many ways.

I think honestly calling them "versions" is almost wrong, cause they are 2 completely different stories that just start the same. The answers to the mysteries are different, the themes are different, the character arcs different, more than half the story is different.

There are important characters in 2003 that aren't in brotherhood, and important characters in brotherhood that aren't 2003. honestly, beyond the first 20 episodes, there is barely any point of comparison as far as parallels go.

@APolygons2 The Fullmetal Alchemist manga started in 2001. When the first anime was being made in 2003, the manga wasn't even halfway done yet, so the studio had to create some original content for it.

In 2009 when the manga is getting close to being finished, the same studio decided to create a much more faithful anime adaptation of it.

@Peach_Main I know that, but the interesting part of it is, 2003 was planned to be a original story from the start. It wasn't a "oh shit we ran out of content, let's start to do random shit"

Even from the very first episode of 2003, it was foreshadowing things that were specifically planned for the 2003 "version". I know brotherhood is the one that fully adapts the manga, but my point was that 2003 wasn't trying to fully adapt the manga to begin with. They had planned to make it a different story from the start.

Which is why looking at 2003 as a "failed adaptation" doesn't really make much sense, It's like calling Gankutsuou or moriarty the patriot bad adaptations of The Count of Monte Cristo and sherlock Holmes.

Probably Dragon Ball Z Kai. I watched that whole remake.
@DesuMaiden Does that really count though? It's more similar to the Star Wars special editions than a full blown remake.

OT: FMAB probably. I like the old version but the manga's story went in a better direction imo.

@APolygons2 I didn't mean to put the 2003 anime like that. I actually never have watched the 2003 anime, and the 2009 anime was recommended to me by a friend. Plus, I would not criticize an anime adaptation for not being faithful to its manga counterpart. I have watched both adaptations of Sailor Moon and both of them are enjoyable in their own ways.

@Peach_Main Damn, then I really suggest you check out 2003, its a great show.

And it is genuinely a completely different experience from the brotherhood.

Black Butler season 1 is the same, but I used a "filler-free" guide not knowing that. In hindsight, I would only recommend the season to those who intend to watch the whole thing.

I'd argue the JoJo part 3 OVAs are better than the TV series, especially the last 6 episodes (that were actually made before the first 7 ones).

Devilman Crybaby is simply a different adaptation of the manga, not really a remake of the anime. I agree with Dororo though.

I'd say Devilman Crybaby, Dororo and FMAB are the top 3 of best remakes.

But isn't the original anime adaptation also completely different from the source material tho? AFAIK the Toei adaptation was more like a "monster of the week" formula rather than a 1:1 adaptation of the source material.

Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters kinda counts. The original Yu-Gi-Oh anime while good wasn't able to make it all that far stopping at the Monster World arc of the manga. Duel Monsters, while skipping out on most of the pre-Duelist Kingdom arcs, truncates a lot of these events into an easily digestible form and keeping the focus on solely the card game that the manga had started to focus on. Episode 1 of the Duel Monsters series combines The Cards with Teeth storyline and the Death-T storyline together into a single episode that introduces the viewer to the characters well and flowing at a really solid pace for how truncated it is. For the other manga arcs pre-Duelist Kingdom that brought up important things they were sprinkled throughout creatively in scenes that made sense using either flashback or filler content that takes some of those manga stories and retells them with the card game being the method rather than the random games used in the manga. The new Japanese cast also just fit their characters much better in my opinion

If we're talking about cases in which I've seen both to be able to compare, I can only think of:

Kannon (2006)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works TV
Hellsing Ultimate
Dragonball Z Kai
The Heroic Legend of Arslan (2015)
Kino's Journey (2017)
Fruits Basket (2019)
Blade of the Immortal (2019)
Rurouni Kenshin (2023)
Spice & Wolf (2024)

I've seen other things that were remakes as well, but not the original work.

Devilman Crybaby. The old OVAs are the typical anime adaptation that is basically the same thing as the manga but worse; the remake at least added a memorable soundtrack.

Though with how underwatched the Yamato remake has been among anime viewers, I'm not too surprised it hasn't been brought up much.

Fruits Basket had a nice touch-up. Bartender, which just finished airing as Kami no Glass, also had a refreshing pace to it while being dramatically different from a tonal point of view. As it's already been mentioned several times, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an exceptional rendition of the title. Hunter X Hunter was a good reboot, though the original series is also not without its own style and charm, and the same could be said of JoJo and vintage JoJo - both the original series and the reboot have character and charm. Nothing else really comes to mind at the moment, though I'm sure I'll think of something more 20 minutes from now.
