@-Sleek- I actually don't remember what rank was required. If you say it's first I'll take it at face value, but then I have to question why there'd be a requirement for a rank that's never been achieved to pass.
That makes the development worse, not better.

@Smilomaniac for that you have rewatch ep18 because in that ep it was also mentioned why they need to take this exam and why first class mage is required for that region and it was also mentioned that there are few first class mage already so that rank has been achieved in the past.

@LG545 You're going to have to get used to people not liking what you like. I'm not disregarding your opinion because I don't like you, but because you write terrible arguments and rationalized explanations in order to try and force agreement. You're an active nuisance and I'd appreciate it if you stopped pestering me.

Another episode of peak fantasy 🙏🏾

Been waiting all week to see Übel and Wirbel showdown and it was nice, albeit short. Despite coming off ruthless and cold, Wirbel’s a pretty decent fella who’s been battle hardened. Fern lying about Ehre being dead was a nice way to diffuse the battle without any “unnecessary killing”

But I mean damn, look at the size of the hole(pause) that Fern’s basic attack magic left in the ground. Damn near should’ve killed Ehre. It’s insane how OP she is and she hasn’t even reached her potential

On the other end of the arena, Frieren vs Denken is finally set up. Can’t wait to see that next week. It’s interesting to see someone who knows about Frieren and is still willing to challenge her. Surely Denken can’t hope to compete with the mage of the hero’s party, but maybe he has a few tricks up his sleeve.

We also learnt about why so many people want to be first class mages rn. The chance to learn any spell in existence would be a very enticing opportunity for any mage. I definitely want to learn more about serie. A living grimoire that knows all of humanity’s spells is wild.

People saying these last two episodes haven’t been as good are tripping

I don't get why this arc is dragging on. The whole premise continues to feel awkwardly forced and a departure from the tone of everything previously.

I don't get the 'teenager geniuses' rather than veterans and scholars. Why we're suddenly doing 'my hero academia' with quirky spells, I have no idea. I have zero investment in any of the hastily presented characters or the suddenly revealed reward of the exam.

This drags the score of the show pretty hard.
@Smilomaniac I can tell you that in Frieren everything is explained and connected very well and with lots of details, unfortunately if there is something of this type that doesn't suit you it means that you missed some pieces

Is it just me or this episode doesn't feel as intricately made as the rest of the series? Character just spouted out dialogue for no reasons or any natural transitions like Wirbel suddenly, in the middle of the fight, just talked about his backstory to his enemy out loud. Or characters do illogical stuff like Wirbel just blindly trusted Fern for absolutely no reasons whatsoever, when he is a supposed battle-harden mage. The dialogue writing is horribly mediorce as it is filled with characters stating the obvious, talking about their backstories, or just spewing exposition when it could be shown instead.

I absolutely love this series but this episode to me felt like a massive fluke and most of the recent episodes felt like I am watching an average fantasy anime. Hopefully, the show can recover and deliver us a satisfying finale.
@2Weeb4U2be I felt the exact same way watching this. I was wondering if I somehow just hadn’t noticed it in previous episodes, but I guess it's just an issue for this episode.

@Alepercy It's possible that media fails to be adequately engaging or has pacing issues. The past couple of episodes are far from top tier quality. Unless of course you like exposition and plentiful mouth flapping scenes.

See, this is how you stretch out a fight by adding important information about the characters and an end goal (even if it's a lot of infodumping). The author and anime staff of Shangri-la Frontier could learn a thing or two.

It felt a tad weird how Wirbel fell for the old trick "you sly dog, you got me monologuing" to reveal his past and also allow Fern to close in for the jugular. But probably he's just too kind and after all his past story of allegedly killing infant soldier wasn't entirely true and that made him sort of a softie. With Frieren making their stand off in a more calm but threating scenario does fit her nature (after all even she wasn't able to defend the bird).

Wirbel carrying Scharf like a helium ballon (just like Fern carried Stark) will always be funny running gag.

This was the third episode in a row that didn't grab me. I like this show for its introspective themes and personal stakes. I really couldn't care less about the clumsily incorporated backstories of every nobody in the exam.

I'm still looking forward to the next episode, though. Seeing this story animated so beautifully is always a treat, gripes about exposition notwithstanding.

@Gavinmercer No need to be rude. I felt the same way as Weeb--some of us can't stomach this much unprompted anime dialogue. Frieren in particular was great about contextualizing all of its speech before this episode, so it came off as particularly noticeable.

you think next ep will be frieren fighting... ofc not it will be lots of talking and those 2 girls vs the earth mage. because they are stretching the hell out of the show, they'll want to end on a highnote or a cliff for S2 or novel/manga sales, like: (e22 frieren fighting old man, e23-e25 test 2 bla bla talking, e26 frieren does something cool, the end).

@-Sleek- You're totally right about the information being necessary. I just wish it was conveyed at a time that didn't break up the pace of other conversations, fights, or character moments.

Like, the deal with the privileges and the organizers--that was told to us by a character who was about to get into a serious fight against capable mages. He probably should have been more focused on the task at hand instead of giving his opponents exposition.

  • contradiction:
    • "They were perverts to love killing. I should kill you here."
    • "I've lost the qualification. I don't do unnecessary killing."
  • "If she did it with just common offence magic, she must be quite a monster."
Actually, you can't go easy on an opponent when abilities are close.

@kuroneko99 how is that a contradiction lol

wirbel said he used to see a lot of perverts who ENJOYED the act of killing, implying ubel to be one, so he should end her here. how is that a contradiction, huh ? he wasn't about to kill her out of satisfaction or anything.

also the moment he heard ehre was dead, he gave up on killing anyone, because he couldn't pass the exam anymore. that's why he said "I don't do unnecessary killing".

maybe pay attention next time, man.

Finally they introduce the character who has been in the intro since the beginning!
Seems like someone even Frieren knows about, since she actually reacted for once. Still wonder if she is friend or foe though.

Fern just using a magical gatling gun, well she has been trained by Frieren after all.

Now that Wirbels party has revealed how little they care about killing someone, its really lucky for the girls to be with Frieren.
His binding spell seems pretty strong, but I expexted more from Übel.

PS: just realized there are not 4 but 8 eps left, nice!

@eksratu you are not wrong but whenever he was getting ready for a fight denken was stopping him and when frieren said she doesn’t care about the first class title, since he is giving the exam for the 2nd or 3rd time so he just thought that frieren should know about the privileges and it’s not the first time we have seen this kind of a thing in anime where character likes to explain certain things.

Funny how we got a more calm OP for the second cour, but there is far more action now.
3:18 Sorganeil doesn't seem to be a real word?

Wirbel hesitating to kill makes him a bit more human, I like it.
8:28 daaaamn, the eye twitch. Ehre must be important to him. And yes, as I thought, Fern didn't actually kill her, phew.
Lmao Wirbel's party is amazing. I like him so much more now.
I feel like I've seen the girl from the flashback somewhere... Or maybe it's Ehre? That'd be cliche, but I like it lol. Also damn, he is much older than I thought. This is kinda nice to see.
THEY PASSED HELL YEAH
16:24 Sense is scythe or sickle. She looks like the girl from the flashback too, huh

16:30 Genau is exactly

17:52 Idk what Jilwer means, it doesn't appear to be German

20:32 Serie is "series". I've heard this name! And she was in the first OP! I expected her to have purple hair.

22:15 Idk what Bargland is either. Also from some Googling I realized that all the spells in Japanese use 義訓 (gikun) - reading of a kanji by meaning. So "Bargland" is written as 大地を操る魔法 - "ground controlling magic".

I feel like we're about to get some beautiful animation next episode. Excited for it.
@Embient Different translations I guess, in anime says Sorganeil, in manga it was Sorganeel

The battle between Ubel and Wirbel was pretty tense, where it was as much of a psychological fight as it was a physical one. Wirbel's backstory does show that he isn't as heartless as I thought he initially was, which you couldn't say the same for Ubel. In the end, the battle ended when Fern entered and had her staff aimed at point blank at his neck, making him concede defeat here.

Lady luck did decide to shine on him, though. After helping his defeated teammates, they encountered a Stille by chance and using his strong spell, he caught it. All's well that ends well, I guess. =)

Meanwhile, Frieren's team were having a tough stand-off with Denken's team. It was surprising to know that Denken isn't one who likes to kill unless it's absolutely needed. Sadly, the same couldn't be said for his teammate, Richter, as he seems to care more about winning by any means necessary, so he wants to kill off Frieren's group.

It does set-up a juicy battle for the next episode, with Richter taking on both Kamee and Lawine, leaving Denken to go against Frieren alone. This episode's pacing and dialogue heavy scenes won't be popular with everyone, especially people who're too used to faster paced series, but I'm liking that this series is taking its time to set things up. The animation quality was also noticeably strong here with the spells and physical attacks, so I can only that being more frequent in the next episode. I hope Frieren's group can win their battle, even though it's going to be a tough one at that.

Probably why stark is my favourite character, he shows the most emotion and is pretty badass sometimes
@Phantom_373 - finally someone else is bothered by this. I get the main character being a little emotionless, sinse she's literally called "freezing", but why is everyone Thomas Shelby now? Even if the author thiks it's cool, they shoud tone it down a bit. It's starting to get annoying.

@-Sleek- I don't hate dialogues and expositions. I even argue that the show has done dialogues and expositions better in some of the earlier fights. Episode 9 and 10 are examples of this. Characters do talk a lot and even straight up tell their opponent about their abilities, but it is part of the characters' personalities like the demons are arrogant, think lowly of humans when it comes to magic, so it makes sense why they would explain their power, or even toy with them instead of killing them straight away. These eps also juggled masterfully between expositional backstories and the fights without messing the pacing at all, like how ep 10 flipped between Frieren backstories with her master and the actual fights with Aurora while explaining both Frieren and Aurora's abilities, and build up hype for the final moment.

Fern absolutely dominated that fight, spam attacked, ultimate offensive magic, and ultimate liar.

Looks like Frieren knows the ultimate mage very well, possibly alluding that she's one of the few who's beaten Frieren. So any mage with first class status will get their wish/spell granted. Frieren will definitely ask for the dumbest most useless spell for her collection.

Showing us many examples of people with the capacity to kill choosing not to. Wirbel with his battle against Ubel, she has some dangerous magic that Wirbel couldn't tell the direction it was coming from. His binding magic being so powerful but having to maintain constant vision on your target. Wirbel could've killed Ubel right there but based off his past its easy to see why he would just casually kill her. He has killed many people before but then it wasn't a choice now he can choose and he chooses not to. It wouldn't be necessary to kill Ubel and Wirbel making that decision on his own was very well done. Fern defeating her opponent with her overwhelming magic power like usual. The most unassuming powerhouse mage that's Fern. Wirbel party stumbling across the bird they need was nice to see, his mercy not going unrewarded, if he had stayed and fought Ubel and Fern more then he wouldn't have found the bird. Danken party at the end of the last episode swooping in to steal Frieren party bird now here seeing more of that. Danken another person choosing not to kill even though it would be perfectly feasible. Trying to ward off his man to not kill Lawine and Kanne. Danken not being interested in the reward of any spell for becoming A first class mage is interesting, makes you think what's his higher goal than just becoming more powerful.
