CyGames's newest original anime made in-house through CyGamesPictures, directed by veteran director Oobari Masami of famed old-school mecha classics from 1983's Tokusou Kihei Dorvack and 1985's Choujuu Kishin Dancougar, to recent ones like last year's lackluster Kyoukai Senki a.k.a AMAIM spin-off.

The pilots of Lieutenants American Lewis Smith and Japanese Isami Ao meeting in Oahu, Hawaii, both piloting Titanostrider (TS) mechas and representing their various countries' agencies in the AD-RIMPAC exercise, though they got their various 3-month punishments for violating orders. The exercise goes as usual, until an unknown entity comes from space to interrupt their exercise. This becomes a realistic battle as their unknown enemy has barrier defenses that they cannot penetrate, despite their best efforts to contain its forces. Isami soon gets rescued by a mech who requests him to jump in its cockpit to control it, this really feels like the old-school 1983 classic Armored Trooper VOTOMS, with the theme songs (in this case the OP song) played at action moments.

IDK...despite the old-school mecha feeling and CyGamesPictures's rather impressive animation, the overall feel of the doesn't look all that palatable, despite the fact that NEITHER CR nor Hidive licensed this show.

EDIT: CR has finally licensed the series!

Still though, the nostalgia in me whom once watched mecha shows like the old-school Gundam, Gunbuster, and the like during the young days, wants to progress further...

WAIT, this could be actually fun, reengaging the old-school mecha feel. The Brave series has returned!

I found it weird Obari was making a millitaristic real robot show. Turns out, it was actually a Brave Series inspired super robot, and I've never been happier of having been lied to.

@Ionliosite2

Makes you wonder if this was made to market Brave series style mecha to adults and particularly Western adults, as Westerners tend to absolutely hate anime in the Brave series, due to protagonists being younger than the typical teenagers and young adults in mecha piloting them. Bang Bravern even feels like the midway point between a super robot show and real robot show for starters.

in retrospect it was a little obvious that 'bang brave bang' was doing the same alliterative thing as gaogaigar and it has 'brave' in the title twice. i didn't mind the kinda armored core thing they advertised, but i'm happy with it being the closest thing to a new braves show as you can possibly get. what's up with the subtitle situation through, is someone fansubbing this or did it just completely fall through the cracks?

Wait, so is this literally just on Japanese TV? Or has it been licensed to one of the minor Western streamers?

@sonoffire94 i've heard it's only licensed in indonesia and thailand of all places so no subs yet. it's making the throwback 90s/00s mecha experience more authentic, lmao.

Ok, so first of all, those soldiers are so hot, and Isami and Smith have such a great chemistry! Not sure about Ryoma's fate (He's one of Smith's friend) but things don't look good after the alien attack.

Believe it or not, but this anime is not the first time that try to surprise me by quickly shifting from realistic robot genre to super robot genre, I have seen this trick before in...

Ok, this started a bit like Full Metal Panic, than transformed in Aldnoah.Zero and after that made a sharp turn into the Brave franchise territory (more exactly something akin to GaoGaiGar).
Well, I had fun, that's the important part.

It's got the heart, which is a good sign, not to mention it's hilarious seeing Isami go from quiet and nervous to absolutely hammy in seconds. Situation went dire fast and really sold the invasion. That shift in feel and action, being more heavy, slow and ineffective to fast paced, quick and powerful was awesome. Isami and Bravern both seem like newbies given Bravern seems to react surprised himself. And I'm calling it, they're gonna pull a Tekkaman were Bravern's actually a defector from the enemy.

Also, really seeing the references.

Aliens Invading: Zeravire/SRW OG enemies

Bravern: Gravion/Brave hybrid

Burn Blade: Choujuuken/Dancouken/Brave Swords

Burn Blade Blaze Up: Gravion Blaze Up line plus SRX Z.O Sword.

Isami: Kyosuke/Chirico/Akihiro if they didn't have years of experience. He even has Kyosukes charge in and strike approach.

Smith: Basically Excellen + Char Clone.

It was all going good and then like 7 mins of the anime it went full gundam style. I wish it would have stayed like Mech's and they learn how fight off what happen and instead this damn gundam appears to save the day.

Honestly: not bad, just dumb.
Wanna be cool, try really hard to be cool, but simply dumb.

Left me wondering if this was written by a 4 years old Japanese boy for the US american audience. :/

If only this was beautiful (artistically or animation wise) ... but it's not even that, it's just dumb. :/
I could even be happy with a parody ... but no, its just dumb. :/

Ok. My predictions for how well something is recieved are totally off - as usual. No synopsis, "American Hero Style", Alien Thread and something serious being taken... not very serious. This is essentially The Marginal Service with a taking Gundam. So I expected something with 40% dislike and a score of 4.8 - 5.2.

Anyway - regarding the show itself, I'm not quite sold yet. It was slow, but promising until the talking Gundam showed up. Because that thing did NOT fit the dark, apocalyptic atmosphere established before.

I hope next episode will get a grip on the genre and pull this show in a good, or at least fixed direction.

Now, THAT'S a fucking tonal shift if I've ever seen one.

Felt kinda disappointed in how it shifted gears when the talking robot showed up but it hooked me back in when I realized the stupid, corny song was actually playing diegetically and it was none other than that same sentient cringebot playing it as BGM for itself. This will be an extremely dumb show, but it might be the right kind of dumb for me.

Huh, another original from CYGames. O.O
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

My favorite first episode this season, an overall perfect opening episode.
My only issue is how thick the black-lines are on the mecha but it's not a constant, only in a few shots.
Perfect.

So this is a parody of Brave, haven't seen not even one so I won't be watching it I guess.

Also, killed inside each time somebody referred to the mechas as "some Gundam" in the thread.

Japanese-U.S. exercise where they play real life AC
Suddenly unknown enemy warps into LEO and alien machines job the jet fighters like in ID4. Now the humans' gritty real robots have to use live rounds.
When the giant alien super weapon is about to fry the protagonist, DEUS EXEST MACHINA.
The titular super robot Bravern asks Isami board him (when Lewis spotted him from a distance, I thought the humans would start attacking Bravern as an alien).
Unlike the TS, Bravern has futuristic motion capture control, but before they can sortie, he has to play his own theme song loudly in the cockpit (yes, Kenichi Suzumura is the singer as well as the seiyuu!). Where the TS weapons were useless, Bravern takes down the alien fighters with his fists and sword, and he has to yell out what attack his using each time in classic super robot anime fashion. Of course the finisher must involve posing (courtesy of director Masami Obari) before the alien super weapon destructs behind him.

i'm honestly glad it actually became a real Obari Super Robot mecha show. It feels like super robot mecha especially super robot talking mecha in anime is rare nowadays to sell to an audience that likes more serious stories. Like i am glad it's not just a basic anime about some pilot who wanted to be a hero thanks to super robot mecha shows as a kid but then grew up in a realistic mecha world.

I hope though they do not go full on parody just because has an genre shift. Because i can see the potential of a fun but grounded story of a super robot mecha having to adapt and bond with people in an otherwise somewhat realistic mecha world.

It can be like those stories where someone/something is from a more futuristic time or world befriending people in another world kinda thing. Backwards isekai lololol.

@KurokamiPhantom they really need to use the military setting and origin to its full potential. To sell that they can keep up with the main heroes instead of being a forgettable backdrop. If they can make those elements mix together well, then it could be beyond just an casual subversion/parody. I really hope this show does grow into mixing these elements together to be both fun and deep.

I love mecha for the characters, but I esp love it when mecha are characters, if you mix them together, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH :DDDDDDD

Ngl I like the first half where it seemed more real robot -esque and bleak war drama better. Considering the name of the series and Obari's involvement I knew it's trailers were likely red herrings but still kind of disappointed.

I haven't gotten around to seeing the Brave franchise yet, but have seen a few older Super Robot anime so guess I'll just have to adjust my expectations of this.

I'm curious as to how well they'll intermix the bleak war setting with the general optimism found in Super Robot anime.
