I came up with this question because of ever since Madoka Magica came out (or by the time the original anime ended at least) everyone and your grandma have agreed that Madoka is the Evangelion of magical girls, so i was wondering: What anime can be considered "the Evangelion of x"? the x may be a genre, demographic, concept or anything like that.
I know your PTW list is bigger than your completed list.

@Spunkert I do disagree to the point i could cut of all my hair.

Something that would not make FMA the shonen verison of EVA is the insanely childish parody and gag comedy both FMA verison has.

It's way to childish to even been compare on the same level as EVA. ofc this is just my view and why i disagree.Devilman: Crybaby
would have been a far better pick from you.

@Nillwas You misunderstood the assignment. It was not about finding the "X version of Evangelion", but finding an anime that had the same impact on its own genre as Evangelion had on mecha. The content or tone doesn't necessarily have to be similar to Evangelion at all.

>the Evangelion of X

Nothing is the Evangelion of X. Wonder why? Well, Evangelion in and of itself is a very misunderstood show. It's not a show that hates it's genre, it's actually a show that grew out of Anno's own love for the genre, believe it or not. Anno has always been a mecha fan (he actively skipped class in college just so he could watch Space Runaway Ideon as it premiered), to say nothing about his love of Ultraman and other tokusatsu. Claim whatever, but the way it altered anime was mostly through popularity rather than innovation. It had slightly more consequences shown off than is the usual for the genre, and the twist ending was what kinda "made it" for more people, but the level of innovation is not on the point of something like Mazinger Z, Getter Robo or Gundam where these shows literally created whole new subgenres. Eva doesn't have that honour of creating the supernatural horror mecha show - that one goes completely to Ideon, it's major inspiration. Note that this isn't a denial of Eva's merits as a show itself, just the claim that it was completely revolutionary. It was more of a shot to the arm for mecha because the asset bubble happened to burst at the same time.

The same applies to Madoka - it's just a mahou shoujo show that happens to be somewhat more serious in it's approach and has a twist ending. And much like Eva, it definitely wasn't a definer for the genre like Cutey Honey or Sailor Moon were. Hell, you had stuff like Princess Tutu that precede it by a full decade or more.

tl;Dr: Calling some popular serious anime "revolutionary" is plain and simply shortsighted if you don't have the full knowledge of the genre's history.

I don't actually get what exactly "the Evangelion of x" even means but anyway, the most significant case was definitely Astro Boy (1963) as it was THE Evangelion of the anime medium itself.

Gundam was the Evangelion of mecha before Evangelion became the Evangelion of Gundam and then Tomino was like "I'm making Brain Powerd and it's gonna be the Evangelionest of all Evangelia". And then he did and it was weird.

One can't mention FMA without the inevitable "the comedy sucks" post. I thought it was an /a/ thing but it seems to have spread.

It's almost as if the humor is genuinely shit and you don't have to be a part of some specific subculture to realize it. FMAB suffers from tonal incoherency and the humor contributes.

If not obvious - everybody thinks out a ridiculous comparison between incompatible series and than we compare notes.

@Nillwas Also, Brotherhood is very straight forward, optimistic and has very bi-dimensional characters imo.

Id say Hunter x Hunter is the true EVA of battle shounen, since it deconstructs the standards set by Dragon Ball.

Evangelion was never what people claim it to be, the effect it had on mecha isn't that big
That being said, digimon tamers to Pokémon and digimon is what people claim evangelion is to mecha (probably since it was influenced by eva), but sadly after it the genre became pretty stale and they stopped trying so the only place you can directly see it's effects is pokemon xy

@Zarutaku Sailor Moon is the Dragon Ball of Sentai Mahou Shoujo, Cutey Honey is the Dragon Ball of action mahou shoujo as a whole.

@Guilmon1 Eva had little to no impact on the mecha genre because the genre was already so entrenched it had little to no room for true innovation. It simply wasn't a trend starter like Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball was.
