i see a lot of people talk about good or bad anime but im wondering: what are some animes that are the definition of a fat 6/10 5/10 (and yes i know everyone has a different view of scores/numbers)

what was an incredibly middle tier anime. not good, not great. not even really memorable the slightest. you felt nothing. but not in a bad way.

just animes that are sort of there. you want talk any smack or nice things.

So how are we supposed to remember them if they aren't memorable? There are lots of them and choosing the most mid is contradictory cause they are all the same.

Sword art online is a show with slightly above average animation, slightly bellow average plot, bad characters and good music and voice acting. Averaging those out gets you mediocrity.

Sakamichi no Apollon (Kids on the Slope) comes to mind.

I loved how it was a homage to some of my favorite jazz musicians (Evans, Blakey, etc.) and the jam sessions/performances were fantastic, but everything else just flopped for me. Lots of shitty melodrama, generic characters, and an absurdly contrived happy ending. The pros and cons just canceled each other out. Can't call it good, can't call it bad. In my eyes, that's about as "mid" as it gets.

For me probably a slice of life that I couldn't relate to or that was too boring. Like, it's not bad or good. For example, Musaigen no Phantom World or Mikakunin de Shinkoukei.

Also super generic shounen, most recently Enen no Shouboutai. Predictable plot with uninteresting characters averages out with good action and design.

Dragonaut, it balances perfectly the mecha, drama, love trianle, ecchi and friendship in a perfectly mediocre way. It's the poor man's evangelion and code geass (seeing how eva and geass are respected and have a high score).

I thought Chuunibyou was a really meh series in general, didn’t really care for the animation or the delusional fantasy scenes and the drama was half baked and mediocre. Nothing really stuck with me but I can’t really call it bad.

Shirobako, is story about a studio that produce anime. Is a good show if you're into how anime studio works and mostly about the daily issues they're facing. Very mild stuff, the dialogue isn't interesting just general conversation and problem solving, some formal and the ugly meetings. Nothing cutesy, funny how the males are portrayed in realistic drawing but girls are always looking anime alike.

About the same goes to Sore ga Seiyuu! is about CV actors/actress but slight lesser boring than Shirobako.

My most dull 5/10 is probably One Punch Man, and not because I felt nothing but because it was boring as fuck.

In general my 5/10s don't stand for mediocre as much as a mixed experience of both good and bad (I'd argue the average seasonal is closer to a 3.5) . I guess I'm quite selective when it comes to watching shows that seem to have a bit of personality, and I don't watch stuff to leave them in the background without minding them at all either.
Something like Oregairu reeks to me as painfully "middle tier anime" but then again I already have the show in the negative territory.

The exception to this (and more closely to the not feeling much from OP) are short OVAs, that I mostly rate in the 4-6 range if at all because they don't have a lot of time to leave much of an impression either good or bad. But I get bored too fast lately to watch actual normal length series that don't leave me with much of an impression or seem irrelevant to me.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni
The Cat Returns
Spice and Wolf (be it blasphemy in some's eyes or not, I rated the first season a 7 and the second a 4, so on-balance, two seasons of the overall unfinished show feel very much that middling meh way to me after the fact)
Neon Genesis Evangelion - double or triple blasphemy, I know, but I have it at a 6. But compared to the others above, I have more strong feelings, both positive and negative, about this series than any other I rated in the middling range, which is saying something at least. There is a lot I like, but it's more a case of where the bad began to overshadow the good for me.

Also, another user above, one Greyleaf, mentioned Sakamichi no Apollon. I have the sense I rated this a little higher because of the unusual setting which was refreshing (60s period piece), but everything else about it was rather disappointing. I feel as if I've seen the male lead done a million times before and I'm tired of these very shy and awkward, passive and self-conscious self-insert/cypher male MCs. Also, for a completely different time period in a changing Japan 50+ years removed from the present, they didn't seem to make a concerted effort to utilize that setting in an interesting way or deviate from the school formula at all during all school scenes. You'd have to think the average school of the period would feel a little more different than if it could have been in place in a current day-set 2019 anime.

I guess I'd say:

- Another
- Brothers Conflict (I guess a 6 is abit high it would be 5/6)
- Golden Boy
- Great Teacher Onizuka
- Hybrid Child
- Kenka Banchou Otome: Girl Beats Boys
- Kono Oto Tomare! (I've only seen season 1 though)
- Ojamajo Doremi
- Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji

But the first that came in mind it was definetely:

- Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru

It still gets on my nerves because I can't see what it was trying to state tbh ...

With Hinako Note being the prime example of a mediocre, by the book, SoL.
Just good enough not to warrant a drop, but by an incredibly small margin. It's like a 5.2, at the absolute best.

Fairy Gone is an epitome of average-ness and the notion of being generic as far as the art is concerned. It has a ton of tropes, each of which it spectacularly fails to deliver properly.

Re;Zero and Attack on Titan are both series I have in the mid category. In terms of animation and sound design they are both pretty good it's the characters and plot which is barely watchable.

I think they might have been the most mid shows I've personally seen.

Technically, To Heart 1 and 2 (Both series Oriental Light and Magic products, 1999 and 2005, respectively)

- are about as "Mid" as anything can surely get.

at least TH1 benefits from above-average Animation quality; TH2 has got to be OLM at their very Nadir.

nonetheless, both are remarkably DULL Anime adaptions. it's sad to personally Admit to that,
being that TH2 gave me My Wife♥ and TH1 offered one of the most lovably Pure-Hearted Android women
to be found in all of Anime... or much of anywhere, for that matter...
