Is more a matter of luck of picking Pokemon before it exploded (Similar to Crunchyroll funding Kemono Friends) than 4Kids merit. 2: "Ever since Pokemon went back to Nintendo, the games are being more relevant than the anime series" Geoff decides to arbitrarly ignore every single thing that happened since then and only focusing on 4Kids losing Pokemon "because it proves his point". Yes, since that time Pokemon has been losing it's steam, but so fucking does every other anime in television , i might even say cartoons in general. What REALLY happened was that around that time internet skyrocketed, as i once watched in i great video: Importing anime killed western action cartoons, and the internet killed anime in the western television. 4Kids didn't have anything to do with that, if somethinf, let that sink in your mind: You're a company hosting some of the most profitable and influential animation of the decade, and you still managa to fuck up and go bankrupt. 3: "If not by 4Kids, most of you wouldn't like anime" Do you really think that? Really? Because that is a strong claim . People seem to overrate how stuff brought up by 4Kids molded the western anime community, but i'm am certain to say that "my generation" was more influenced by things such as Naruto, Death Note, Code Geass or even Bleach than it was by 4Kids. I don't think that having watched anime as a kid resulted in me liking anime nowadays. Geoff himself said that "At the time no one knew those were anime, but people liked stuff like it". 4: "4 of 5 five more sucessfull anime films in the west como from 4Kids" Let me correct that: 4 of the five more succesful anime films in the west came from ultra-famous franchises that were also ultra-famous franchises in Japan, without 4Kids influence, were famous from being from such franchises, and only happenned to also be from 4Kids. 5: "Pokemon compilation album receiv Gold and Platinum, Guren no Yumiya did not" Probably THE WORSE argument of all, first of all: WHY ARE YOU COMPARING AN ALBUM TO A SINGLE SONG? IT IS OBVIOUS THAT ONE WILL SELL MORE THAN THE OTHER. Not only that, are you reallycomapring the reach of a song from an late night R-17+ anime that aired in Japan, with a compilation of songs of an family friendly anime that aired in a timeslot where everyone could watch it in a country with more than 2,5 time the population of Japan? Are you really? 6: "It's no coincidence that 2 of the 3 biggest card games had anime from 4Kids" Actually, it is. And i don't even think that 4Kids was responsible for the card games... Now, don't get me wrong, 4Kids wasn't completelly retarded, they did know things about marketing and that stepped up their game quite a bit. But to paint then as the ones who are directly responsible for the community? Nah I've probably butchered english while writing this thread, oh well. |

It sounds like "your generation" isn't the 90s kids / older millennials that he was referring to with that statement. As an older millennial (or perhaps young Gen-Xer?), I'd give more credit to Sailor Moon and DBZ as the mainstream gateway titles for my age group than the 4Kids library. However, those shows received "4Kids-esque" localization treatment at first, so I think MB's point still holds. Clearly, things are different for kids born after the mid-90s, with the Internet allowing quicker and easier access (legal and otherwise) to original Japanese versions and cultural information about them. So the 4Kids Treatment isn't as necessary for accessibility reasons anymore, although it does somewhat live on with Netflix's Glitter Force endeavors. |
| Haven't watch the video, but my country doesn't even have 4kids and I'm still a fan of Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh, and stuffs. I doubt 4kids contributed more than 30% (and I'm being VERY generous) of their world wide success. |

| Maybe if a more competent company had dubbed those anime it could have been even more successful. Disney licensed all of the Ghibli films and all of those turned out well and didn't need to change the animation or dialogue to get it to its targeted audience. |

Actually Geoff has watched a lot, also does some well researched videos. In that regard he does a better job than Gigguk or Joey (who even lost interest in anime) for example... The problem at hand is the whole youtuber/streamer business. In this case if you "get the point" that will make a lot of people who grew up with the 4Kids show sad or even mad - that would be bad for the money income. The business approach here is "pandering of the fans" - for example review popular shows, praise them and at least pretend to like them. In general talking about such topics and having such stances which will please the viewers, regardless what actually is going on. | 1) It's an iconic opening everyone remembers, like how everyone knows the TMNT theme song. Nobody talks about the Japanese Opening because the Japanese version has not been released in any format to western audiences. 3) So about the 3rd point, while it's true Death Note was popular, it wasn't really something non-fans would go out of their way to watch. Pokemon is different, it brought anime mainstream success and made it the hit thing for kids to be into. I know without 4kids, i never would be here. I'd have found some other hobby. Yugioh is the anime that made me like anime. 4) Franchises that would never have been popular in the US without 4kids bringing them to the west. 6) If 4kids didn't bring the anime of those games to America, how well do you think the games would sell? Probably not very well |

| Guys, this thread is five years old. I don't even remember the context of when I wrote that (Though, considering that is a response to Geoff, I was probably correct). I would probably add something I've learned over the years upon becoming my progressive: Geoff takes the American experience and tries to make it "universal" somehow. Anime/manga was already famous in Europe for years, it was even famous in Latin America for years, the USA was the only one late to the party. Either way, I don't really care anymore. |
