This ending was underwhelming for me, the other Gundam that I have seen in a similar format to this was IBO, around ep12 there was still nothing drastic going on but by the end of ep25, it had gone to places and moved the plot forward... it is the problem with this being a split cour, we are more in the middle of something rather than a good point to end shit, with nothing truly concluding.
I hope that what we have ahead in a few days is rather Part 2 of S1, and we will get another season of 25 episodes split cour to fully flesh this setting for Gundams, I do feel with 50 episodes this new Gundam series will have proper time to develop and become memorable, just like IBO S2 was for me
If they end this at episode 25 and there is no S2 I will be a bit disappointed.
Focusing on this first part again (refuse to call it S1 and 13-24/25, S2), 12 episodes were not enough for me to develop these characters in meaningful ways, there are narrative bits they have started within these 12 episodes that I doubt a total of 25 episodes will be enough to properly address everything in typical Gundam fashion.
I love yuri but am skeptical the ship will sail by the end, and if one is watching a Gundam for romance, one is bound to end up feeling disappointed, what I want is an intriguing plot and characters with motivations that I care about to drive things forward, I see the potential here for that, but repeating myself 25 episodes in total won't be enough for me.
Talking about the battles, this was not the best one, some of the earlier episodes and the one from ep8-9 were more exciting, it is cool to see 2D mecha but the OST is also doing wonders, I loved IBO soundtrack, but this one feels more EPIC.
The reason I call this "ending" underwhelming is that it ends with nothing truly concluding, and I just don't feel Sulleta's character in these final moments, earlier in this episode, she was in a state of shock when her mother killed those mercs, and she recovered naturally, but then she goes and kills this dude with her mech just like that, considering her personality and how she felt when her mother killed those mercs, suddenly treating this enemy like it was a bug that as to be smashed, just felt wrong, out of character.
And the way the scene is presented is just brutal and ODD, the focus on the blood dripping, along with Sulleta's cool demeanor despite the carnage she just committed, just did not strike right and I do feel Mio's reaction is not wrong.
Sulleta should have shown at least some resistance or disgust to be forced to do such a thing, acting as if nothing happened, like it was bug just felt plain wrong within her character and what she had just gone through, so unless I m missing SOMETHING, this ending was ODD, and I m hoping part 2 will do something do address this scene.
BTW I freaking love the ending song, but that opening needs to be much improved on part 2, it was just a bore that didn't match, whereas the ED always had me watching it till the end, never skipping.
I gotta bitch about that dude killing his dad, it felt so forced, he was trying to reach out to his dad but by convenience the dad is NOT able to hear him and only when it is too late, felt too forced, also these guys are supposed to be pieces of trash, but get all goody at death's door?!
Let them die like the piece of shit they are, don't try to suddenly only there, pain a better picture of their lives and motivations up to now!
8.1/10 = 8
Overall I expected to like this season a bit more, the characters are still very much green and in need of more development to meet my expectations, putting my hopes on part 2 but I won't hype it too much since I get the feeling this new iteration of Gundam will only truly satisfy me with 50 episodes.

Looking forward to the next arc which should be classic Gundam.
Indeed some scenes allude to that, but then why did she react like that when her mother killed those mercs? If they are hinting for Sulleta to be like this, IMO it means she is a very unstable character, and this is something they want to develop for her character with part 2. IF SO, I look forward to that but don't include a scene earlier in this episode that clashes with the notion this show was building up for her and makes her suddenly feel the emotion and end up distraught from seeing people dying.

Had that thought from the beginning, but does anyone else feel like the Gund-bits are controlled by the souls of dead children, or something of the sort?
Seems like the next obvious reveal, since it's Gundam and all, sacrificing children being kind of the basis of everything.
Precisely my point, also that is an interesting take for the show to take, could see it happening, something needs to happen and conclude, because right now the plot lacks a choesive goal the characters are working towards, something dramatic that makes me wanna cheer for them. |
